Some great in depth write ups about the choice, but I think such a deep lore explanation for a confused viewer might add more confusion than clear it up.
Put simply. The two choices Neo had was either A) let the machines destroy Zion, pick 23 ppl from the Matrix to start it up again, and reboot the Matrix so humanity continues on in at least some form or B) go back into the Matrix (to save Trinity) which will lead to the Matrix eventually crashing and killing every human connected to it, plus the machines will destroy Zion anyway. Neo says they’re bluffing, the machines wouldn’t let the Matrix crash and lose all their battery juice, but the Architect said they are willing to deal with it, adapt to it, if they must.
All the previous Ones picked the other door than Neo did. They choose to reboot the Matrix, even though they knew that meant the Zion they knew would be destroyed (and be repopulated with 23 new people) because as shit a choice as that is, it still ensures that humankind will at least still survive in some capacity. Previous Ones are encoded from birth to be empathetic and loving towards humanity which would’ve encouraged this choice. The Architect notes that Neo is interesting because where’s previous Ones loved humankind in a plural way (think someone like Ghandi), Neo loved in a singular way, with Trinity. So that’s why his choice was an anomaly, the first time a One has chosen that door. Because Neo is so in love with Trinity, between choosing humankind and Trinity, Neo choose Trinity. He loves her so much, he said fuck it, I only care about Trinity.
That’s why that choice is very significant. The other door was a shit situation that leads to humanity still being under control where Zion is constantly built up and destroyed over and over to keep humans in check, but it was the “practical” choice. The compromise. So Neo choosing the other door says volumes about his character and the overall theme of the movie, which the Mrs has said multiple times over the reaction which is the whole love angle. He chooses love over survival.

"As for the sequel: It flew away a bit from the original dark concept of mankind being used as the power source"
      How?
Zion being destroyed has nothing to do with humanity in the Matrix which are the ones providing power to the machine city.
IMHO though they goof the power cost of maintaining all those humans.
Given the sky was f**ked by mankind to deny power to the machines it stands to reason that its pretty cold on the surface.
Therefore any heat benefit from the humans would be needed just to keep them all alive, and probably more still - to say nothing of the constant cost of keeping them all alive in nutrition.
It's not quite as bad as Thanos's reductive idea to halve all life in the universe, but it's definitely not nearly as profound the moment you stop to actually think about the implications.

The Architect says that the Machines created a cycle of destruction and reconstruction. After some trial and error, they realized that every Matrix they create was inevitably going to crash due to human choice. They realized that it is mathematically impossible to get 100% of the humans to choose the Matrix over the Real World. As long as human choice exists, there will always be a fraction of people who reject the Matrix, no matter how much of a "perfect" Matrix the Machines make. Since they can't eliminate human choice, they anticipate the choice and turn it into a perpetual cycle, destroying Zion once its population of people who rejected the Matrix gets too big, and then prompting The One to free a handful of people from the Matrix to rebuild Zion. And since The One carries the Matrix's reboot code, he simultaneously reboots it to its latest version, preventing it from crashing and killing everyone plugged into it.
The people who are picked to rebuild Zion have no idea about the previous Zions or anything regarding this cycle. They're left in the dark about it, and are instead led to believe that The One is a messianic figure who will return someday to free all of humanity, thus creating believers like Morpheus who will follow The One with a religious fervor, aiding him in fulfilling a false prophecy and unwittingly perpetuating the cycle.
The big difference now is that Neo chose to save Trinity, while all the previous Ones chose the other door back to The Source. Neo broke the cycle, both seemingly dooming Zion to destruction and the Matrix to a cataclysmic crash, which would kill all the humans.

Trinity kissing Neo at the end of the first movie is not the reason why he came back to life in the Matrix; the keys are not keys, Persephone's kiss was not just a kiss just as the Oracle's cookies or candies are not just treats; The Oracle does not predict the future nor is she a 'benevolent' program just the same as the Architect does not want to destroy the red pills; Neo reviving Trinity by manually pumping her heart is way more than just a cpr; The near impossible choices Neo is presented with increased intensity throughout the trilogy (right from the start of the first movie with his boss "get your act together or get fired" or Smith saying "one life as a programmer and another as hacker...one of these will have to come to an end) are not free willing choices but instead he is groomed and guided on that specific path by the Oracle, just the same as she guided Morpheus on his path of finding The One. Also, Love has an important role in Neo's story but not in the "conquers all" term, more like it is used to just as stated before to guide Neo into making irrational decisions that go against the pragmatic rational best outcome based on the intended programming 'thinking' of the machines (save Morpheus or keep The One professed to end the war with the machines OR destroy the Matrix to help the human race or save Trinity for example). Merovingian says something similar himself "how similar the pattern of love is to the pattern of insanity"
And a million other misinterpreted scenes or events. If you don't pay close attention to the intrigue and are not that good of a person reader, you're getting distracted by the fighting sequences which btw, as long as they are, they balance the philosophy behind the script exceptionally well.

There is a theory that the Oracle is maintaining the illusion of choice by feeding people dreams like those of Neo.
In the first movie she gave Neo a cookie and in this movie a piece of candy, possibly items that alter Neo's code for the benefit of machines.
It's probably why Morpheus blindly believes in the prophecy and Trinity loves neo, because the Oracle made them to.
The Architect scoffs when Neo calls her Oracle, because she doesn't have such powers, she's just manipulating humans, that's her purpose and role in maintain the Matrix.
Additionally the Merovingian is probably the Oracle from the previous matrix who maintained control through Causality. He survived by choosing exile and hates the Oracle for acquiring his purpose and he takes in other exiles to gain power.

Then again, free will is an abstract concept, cuz a good and moral person is not so by pure choice. They are so through where they were born, how they were raised, what choices the had, if they had any direct mental issues that in part caused issues like sociopathy, what they have experiences in life so far, etc.
We are as much what we choose to be, as we are what our upbringing's made us. IT's why the Oracle in this says that it is less about making a choice, but understanding the choice that was made long ago.

    • @thedappermagician6905

Nah the Oracle is essentially Chat GPT who is programmed with the archetypal feminine functions for the machines. She anticipates behavior, refines it, and ensures the ability for souls/programs-i.e Minds and their lives to flourish.
Because she is coded off of these biological processes to ensure machine harmony and flourish as well as human compliance, she has her version of compassion for both species.
Her 'game' is to bet on multiplicity. She sees mutual absolute destruction for both peoples.
The Architect is the Archetypal masculine program that categorizes, orders, and constructs linear pathways of probability as opposed to the Oracle's seeming position on the side of Possibility.
'He' is essentially a meta-prediction program that crunches hard numbers to deploy simulations in order to keep the Matrix running. He does not make the Matrix a 'Place' like the Oracle, but instead, he makes it a 'Thing'.
Other ways to see their relationship is that the Architect is like Complex Systems Theory versus Oracles' Game Theory.
As for the Merovingian, from what I've gleaned from other analysis and websites and then my evaluation of them, he is generally agreed to be one of the first programs that held the position of Architect, if not the first.
He has an obsession with Cause and Effect which he pedantically dresses up as some profound concept like Karma but which is really just Boolean logic i.e True or False. A standard function of programming logic.
There is some consensus that he built Alpha and Beta builds of the Matrix as Uniformly Good, Uniformly Awful, and another with a kind of High Fantasy/Supernatural thing. Humans rejected each one because neither suited the human's mind for belief, disbelief, faith, and skepticism.
So basically the Merovingian is like a early video game developer(or even like a current one).
His conceit is that he believes all things interact in Either/Or frameworks, and while that may sound like The Architect (he's a junior program compared to that dude), he fails to grasp that things aren't linear even if they continuously bisect.
This is why he was able to be caught up by his wife so easily.
Just my long winded, late-as-heck two cents.

To Elrond in all 3 LOTR films. Back to Smith for this and Revolutions. Now to quote the Architect "You have many questions and though the process has altered your consciousness, you remain irrevocably human. Ergo some of my answers you will understand and some you will not. Concordintly while your first question is the most pressing, it is also the most irrelevant ". This translates to "I know you wanna know wtf is going on, but coming here has made you different from everyone else. But you're still human. So some answers will make sense. The rest won't. I know your biggest question, and it is completely useless" So it stands to reason that(like in other sci-fi) he's more like a machine then your average human. And only seeing the Architect accomplished that.

Ah, good catch! I think Neo/The One being part machine or I guess part program would explain a lot, but I personally like the idea that there is some element of the supernatural involved. Like, the way you put it would explain Neo zapping the sentinels, but would it really explain everything else Neo does outside the matrix in Revolutions? (I assume Mr. and Mrs. have watched it already and are uploading later, but I’ll skirt around spoilers just in case). Given how much the concept of enlightenment is such a theme in all three films, I just see it as a tiny bit more literal magic or mysticism while also strongly maintaining the gritty science fiction foundations. But, like you said, the architect doesn’t necessarily give much more info because he’s a jerk like that lol. So it could be up to interpretation

Also remember that the previous cycles complied with the programing. Meaning Neo wasn't supposed to return the Matrix, so his "evolution " may have been a side effect of like Smith being "compelled to disobey". Ik skirting spoilers is difficult since like you, I've been unplugged for a long time(btw Path Of Neo is lowkey the best Matrix game). Ik there's stuff from Animatrix, Enter The Matrix (which has cutscenes that play into both this and Revolutions), and Matrix Online that play into the overall timeline. It's a shame how weirdly it's all explained, because the implications and twists of this movie are really cool when you break them down into simple computer terms like in the first movie. So, 'The One' is like a benchmark test for each version update of the matrix. It's just that, in the Machines' infinite robotic/mathematical wisdom, they found that giving 'The One' some kind of big important dilemma before every update yielded better results. But they're so cocky and full of themselves that they don't even see the choice as any consequence, it's just a data point for their new patch in the matrix 7.0 or whatever version it is lol. In their hubris, they've not considered THE POWER OF LOOOOOOVE, which is what makes Neo so special as 'The One.' None of the other 'Ones' had the loooooove he has with Trinity, which is why he's the first to make the other choice finally break the cycle that's been going on for god only knows how long. And they also hadn't considered one of their own Agent programs getting corrupted and basically becoming a virus, threatening the existence of both humans AND the Machines. So we're seeing a vicious cycle finally breaking because of Love and just plain dumb luck lol. (although I guess it's still just Love since Trinity's kiss is what saved Neo in the first film, causing him to blow up Smith, which SOMEHOW caused him to get all corrupted and virus-y).
but... all that is explained by some random guy who uses ridiculously big words (probably on purpose to confuse The One and make them feel distressed and take the "non-extinction" door) at the TAIL END of the movie..... I love the action in this movie, but I agree it's a little excessive. They easily could've cut down on maybe one or two big fights and definitely shortened the gross orgy/rave lol. I get that they're doing their last party before almost certain death as a big "F- YOU" to the Machines, but.... ew, stop please lol. Trim all that stuff in favor of clearer and less wordy explanations of what the heck is going on.
Anyhoo, sorry for writing an essay lol. Wonderful video as always!

that gave me a new respect for the series.. i always felt like the second and third matrix movies got a bit too full of themselves. but i love your breakdown of the machines logic and how it was thwarted.. THE POWER OF LOOOOVE always seems to mess up the plans of cold, unfeeling machines. side note: i never understood the scene where Neo zaps a squid-bot in "the real world.." so what, he's like a god in the matrix and in the real world too?

    • @TimDownsAnimation
      @TimDownsAnimation 2 года назад +3

@@swish007 to be quite honest, I think that's where it really falls apart for me lmao. I still can't think of a solid answer for why his powers work IRL besides him being The Messiah. Maybe his learning the true nature of the matrix and the one from the Architect had caused him to be that much more enlightened and therefore more powerful? 'Cause remember in the first movie, he basically only gets stronger the more he's aware/conscious of the truth of the matrix.
The trilogy does everything it can to marry technology with mysticism, like the Oracle being both just a predictive algorithm and an actual psychic, or the keymaker basically just being a keygen, but also a teleporting little wizard dude. and The One may just be a benchmark, but he's also apparently an actual messiah. but.... neither of the sequels really spell that out as far as neo's IRL power, at least not in any way I can remember off the top of my head. Like I said, I like all the ideas this particular movie suddenly throws into the mix, but they're all executed so awkwardly in between a TON of over the top action with no room to really let the audience wrap their heads around it lol. but that's just my take on it

It's not exactly that the One messes everything up, it's that without the One more and more anomalies appear in the Matrix leading to its failure. The machines invented the One as a way of aggregating all of the anomalies into one person, and when that person appears they know it's time to restart Zion, eliminate the One and reboot the Matrix. The One(s) in all the prior loops ultimately helped to make the Matrix more stable, although each appearance of the One signals the end of the then-current version of the Matrix. The people in each new Zion are left with the legends of the One (thinking he's a messiah, when he is actually another system of controls over the humans, much like the messianic-legends the Missionaria Protectiva of the Bene Gesserit planted among the Fremen in Dune that Paul manipulates)...so the new Zion goes back to looking for him again. Also, since Zion starts with 23 people, and they are at 250K currently in this film, that suggests that Zion is allowed to grow for a very long time before the Matrix. It could be that each version of Zion lasts centuries before the One appears. Morpheus suggested it was around two centuries after the fall of humanity...so likely each Zion lasts that long, because Morpheus was *mistaken* about his Zion being the first one.

It's not so much that the appearance of One signals that it's time to restart Zion and reboot the Matrix, but more that the One, being an accumulation of the issues the Matrix has, acts as a software patch to make the next iteration of the Matrix more stable. Zion is the accumulation of "faulty" humans that rejected the Matrix. This is why he's able to accomplish what he does in the third movie with Smith, who has become a virus.

The idea that this movie was made for men is definitely not the case. Plently of women out there who enjoy the trilogy. The thing with The Matrix films is that you don't judge them indivdually. You look at the trilogy as a whole, as one big story being told. The first Matrix started the story of Neo being The One and the sequels of simply natural progressing of that story.
The main flaw of the movies was the fact that Neo potentially being The One and eventually becoming The One was done all within the first movie. This resulted in the sequels being less in overall plot but better in overall action. Personally I don't have a major issues with it but some people do.

  • @paulchaisson8301

The lore of these films is so densely packed that there are multiple ways to read things and still come across new theories 20 years later.
So something like 1% of people will rise up to oppose the system - even if they don't know what it is. These are the anomalies that rose up and crashed the first Paradise Matrix.
Rather than let them act individually, The One was created to found Zion and the resistance - and most importantly - gather all of those anomalies together so the machines can deal with them at once.
Or, to phrase it like I just heard on another video literally hours ago: Zion is the recycle bin on your computer, and needs to be emptied every now and again.

The idea there have been multiple and his predecessors choose the different option from Neo hearkens back to Morpheus saying "He freed the first of us." Referring to the man "born in the machine" That person was the previous "The One" which keeps repeating.
The idea is that he (The architect) can't create a "perfect" matrix so a bug is designed to always appear and they just have a process for it. Kind of like how no process is 100% accurate so you design something to detect and deal with the defects.
I feel its a bit after the fact and wasn't the initial intention. I think the original movie was designed as a one off but then, due to popularity, they tried to retroactively fit this all in. Zion seemed like a much smaller idea in the previous movie and "near the earth's core" didn't really carry over into this movie (and the following).
It was the 6th? incarnation, so we take 500 years and divide by 6 that's about 80+ years for each cycle. That's interesting since there could technically be the "original" people who were woken (as directed by the architect) still alive at the time of the fall.
It also introduces the idea of an existing location that the newly awoken people are taken to or find but its fully built and potentially shows evidence of being destroyed. How would the new people not know that the prior cycle didn't exist...I mean do the machines scrub the place of all documents?
This and the next movie just seem to lose a lot of internal consistency that the first movie did pretty well with.

    • @TearDownGenesis
      @TearDownGenesis 2 года назад

Plus a total of 23 people expanding to the number shown in the *rgy scene is a bit of a stretch. 80 years is 1 maybe 2 generations in time (assuming people start in their prime at year 0). I'm not great at this calculation but (assuming growth rate of 1% each year, which is current world population growth rate) that would be a 100% increase over 80 years (assuming people at the *rgy were at least 19-20 years old). So less than 100 people still. Also assume that the initial group wouldn't be there (since they'd be 100 at that time. as well as the first generation being 60s. That means that you'd have an *rgy of maybe 60 people.
They can wake others up but they'd have to do that at a crazy high rate and perhaps thats the main source but that seems a bit aggressive. If they do 10 people per year I suppose that would be 800 people. Then remove the age aspect so only the people in the last 20 years would likely be attending. That's 200 people, plus the 60 natural born. Of course the prior people could have had kids and that would expand the total natural born population a bit.
Basically the people of Zion would need to be freeing people at an insane rate. It also seems like most of the population of Zion, outside of the ship crew, are natural born (lack of plugs) so an extremely aggressive recruitment rate would be unlikely.
It also wouldn't be very logical since the location is extremely restrictive in how many people can live there so freeing people "just because" wouldn't be wise since it would lead to an overpopulation issue.

I get the "Why doesn't Neo fly away?" question, but it's a bigger deal than that. Ever since he first became the One, Neo's been basically ruling the place. The Matrix is his territory, though he's careful not to push it. You saw how easily he dealt with even 3 upgraded Agents.
Running from Smith means admitting Neo can't just beat him, and returns the redpills to pre-One conditions inside the Matrix; being prey. In addition, I suspect the sharp uptick in extractions mentioned probably has something to do with Neo's relative freedom inside the program, so running means surrendering that, too. I would imagine Neo feels some sense of responsibility towards the people he might be able to save if he wasn't prevented, so he fights.
