I remember helping my grandmother pick out "gifts for my cousins" on a Walmart trip while this line was out. We found 2 of the three Railracer bots, but not the third, so I said to get Megatron instead. That Christmas (or maybe my Birthday, I can't remember ALL the details) I open up ALL THREE of the Railracer bots. I helped my grandmother pick out my own presents & she managed to get the three robots I really wanted at the time. Also, Hasbro should consider Railracer for HasLab, at the very least, they'd know EXACTLY how many need to be made. Yes I want new RiD 2000/2001 figures. Maybe third parties could give them a shot at somepoint instead of G1 over & over again.
I remember when 9/11 happened, all of us were watching the news report in school. Though I couldn't see well, cuz I was at the back, I thought we were watching a regular building caught on fire. Then days later I found out that the twin towers were under attack....
@@robertdelgadocapetillo8684 isn't that how everyone felt at the time? Everyone just wanted to think it was something else, something normal. It wasn't until we couldn't deny it. Hell people tried to do the same when peorl harbor was still happening
This era of Transformers was my introduction to the brand. One of my earliest Transformers related memories is that scene of Scourge transforming for the first time in the show. It left a mark on my then 5 year old mind.
Yeah and got screwed by the disaster. Much like a lot of entertainment back then... movies, comics, tv, even video games were all fucked over by those high flying assholes.
TJ allowed me to buy his autobot brothers off him a few years ago. Ever since then I never stopped. I later bought prime and magnus. Both are in my top 20 figures in my collection. Galvatron is also up there for me. Good God that figure is a piece of incredible engineering.
I was 9 years old when RID hit, and I was obsessed ! Looking back now, my mother must have bought damn near every figure for me. Great series, and great video !
real talk RID 2001 is one of my absolute favorite series of transformers, always has been. It truly needs new updates to the figures, like omega prime, rail racer, gigatron, etc.
Growing up in the early 2000’s, I ended up being caught up in the end of RID and Armada. I’ve never seen the cartoon fully, but I love the RID toy line. It gives me nostalgia whenever I see any of the figures from this era as they were amount my very first transformers figures I ever owned. Still have my spychangers to this day.
This was my introduction to TF as a whole. It may not be the best or even my favorite show, but it'll always have the top spot in my heart for fondness, as well as designs, the aesthetics of every character are quite awesome to me.
Most of the combiners (i.e. not Ruination) feel like they were ideas that whoever was working on the Brave toylines at Takara passed to the Transformers team after GaoGaiGar didn't get a sequel. Kind of brings some things full circle considering how Exkaiser felt like it was a refinement of ideas from Victory
I was prime target market when this show came out (4/5) and remember being infatuated with the spychangers and flipchangers(towline and skidz ) I still have the originals that I had as a kid! Just know this when they add in those spychangers into whatever line I’m going to be very happy
The Trainbots sold badly because they presumably had such a limited release. They weren't in New Zealand at all even though I wanted them and I don't know how hard they were to find in the parts of the world that didn't skip them.
I love RID - when they came out, I was actually able to buy them with my own money from my first job. Still have all of them. Now, if I can just find a complete build team for a decent price
In theory, this could've been interesting: an AU where the predacons are the original "evil" faction and the decepticons are the sub-group. Could've also been seen as a "reverse" of beast machines, since it was vehiculars vs beasts but switched around.
My theory was that the RID 2001 Spychangers sold so well and were popular enough with the kids that it gave Hasbro the idea to feature smaller Transformers heavily in the next series. So that’s probably where Minicons came from.
When I watched rid on RUclips it became one of my favorite TF cartoons alongside G1,Beast wars, prime, rescue bots the original, victory, cyberverse, animated, armada, and beast wars neon and it’s sequel.
I just watched this series last year and I’ve been hunting toys here and there from time to time and man, they just have something about them that’s fun. Even the Predacon repaints.
I remember this line fondly, for those who grew up with G1, beast wars & machine left us wondering at that time if we would ever return to cars. It was the first hit of nostalgia which Hasbro been making killing especially as of late.
Love this toy line. Managed to hunt down all three bullet trains back then. Still have them, Rail Racer is my favorite Transformer toy in my collection.
Considering that in the show, we had 11 baddies; 5 Predacons and 6 Decepticons while we had about 23 Autobots. Evil was really out ranked by good by numbers so it was best that RID toyline made additional Decepticons and Predacons (Bruticus and Cryotek).
Im 24; Transformers rid was one of my oldest transformers lines that i got into (learned more about the show though youtube years ago). Had spy changers op (yellow) and prowl( no longer have them) as well as scourge (though i didn't get him until comic con back in the mid 2010's, still have him though missing his discs for the disc launcher) didnt get any of the others. I do hope that some of these figures get a modern recreation( aside from scourge who is already in the velocitron line) in legacy.
I went DEEP on this line. I saw Carrobots figures in Toyfare, and this was right before importing was common. So when RiD came out, I devoured it. Even BM repaints. Only thing I never got was Fort Max and Galvatron. I drowned in Spychangers, and marveled at Scourge as I never had Laser Prime. Everything worked for me.
RID 2001 deserves a lot more attention, its the line that brought back the Decepticons and Autobots and allowed the idea of moving on from the Beast Era, RID 2001 also is still one of the best toylines that comes about. Ngl I would basically love if Hasbro and Takara redid basically everyone from RID, even the US fill-ins like Sideways and Axor. Also yeah, Transtech is something I want to see be returned too
Been wanting you to do something like this. The RID toys--specifically Omega Prime, Rail Racer and Landfill were truly special and bang-for-your buck legends
RID Megatron/Galvatron still holds the title of having the most modes of any one figure some 20 years later and it's a awesome figure, the combining of OP and Magnus was pretty cool, in terms of series stories it's kind of similar to G1 season 2, problem of the week thou I would say that the most embarrassing defeat for the cons in any series was defeat by a normal stream train, a object with no real life and just the love and passion of those who put it back on the rails! RID may not be the best series but it has some memorable characters for their personalities, such as Sideburn obsession with red sports cars, Skybite and his antics, thou I rather loved his singing at the time and still do because it's funny which is why he was a great character and did break out of RID along with Scourge's paint job! Armada tried to do serious and wasn't to bad but really none of its cast truly broke the shackles of the show unlike Skybite who managed to jump into IDW comics, if anything of the four anime Transformers that got dubbed properly, personally I love RID the most as it's not a super serious show and was rather laid back!!
I remember this toy line fondly, I had Prowl, Spy Changer X Brawn, the Falcon guy, Wars, Hot Shot, Scourge the blue car you showed on here, and even the Universe repaint of Prowl
I know I'm among the few that feel this way, bur I LOVED Rail Racer as a kid. Landfil was alot of fun, even though a lot of people hated Grimlock. I'd love to see new versions of both by a 3rd party company even though we know it won't happen. RID was what started it all for me. I had seem bits of beast machines, but never got into it. Then RID came along and I was hooked. It helped create a forever lasting bond between me, my little bother, and our "brother" who was a huge TFs fan that graduated with me dad in 89.
the spy changers from this time were the first ever transformer toys i ever had. the dream toy for me from this time was the train combiner for me, as i loved trains to an unhealthy obsession back in the day
-"Fire Prime" is one of my favorite Primes. I like how he has two different armored modes. He's also compatible with the Mini-Cons due to the molding points being the same shape as the "dead" connector points on Armada and Energon figures. I had wanted to get the Fire Convoy figure when I saw it in an anime store that sadly isn't around anymore but it was too expensive, so when I heard we were getting a less expensive US release I was so happy and thankfully not disappointed. -Ultra God Magnus on the other hand doesn't like to stand and the combined mode doesn't quite impress me the way I want. He also has Mini-Con compatibility. -Sideburn is my favorite character, so it was a shame it was one of the worst of the figures. Meanwhile Prowl is my favorite mold of the brothers and I own multiple versions of him. -Considering "GoBots" is already a toyline (respelled and reused for other Transformers themed lines over the year) I can see why Spychangers caught on as a name. It's also a really cool name. -Railracer is one of my favorite Combiners. The Build Team has a nice gimmick but while I like it there isn't much beyond that. I actually got a knock-off of Ruination just to get the right colors...not that I would have bought it otherwise. It stands out among the RIDs for the wrong reasons. At least Scourge kind of fits in. -As someone who really didn't like TM2 Cybershark I didn't even bother getting a Sky-Bite. Dark Scream was base on one of my favorite TM2's Nightglider, so it's the only one I bought. -The show is also interesting for being one of the shows affected by the September 11 attack. The first episode of Car Robots had Gigatron introducing himself by smashing his way through the World Trade Center, which obviously wasn't going to fly. Some episodes never aired because it had tall buildings being damaged, including one where Sky-Byte opts to save a space needle restaurant, Robots In Disguise would have their show name reused for another toyline, which may be what today's fans think of when they hear the name if not the IDW comic series that wasn't related to this series. It's too bad because there were some great figures and I really like the show in both dubs. Sadly we'll probably never see either get an official release on home video or streaming because of rights issues.
I remember looking at a catalog and seeing RID Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus and losing my shit. After Beast Wars, Transformers is doing cars again was SUCH a big deal!
Yeah this line is amazing I have a complete in box collection and from past I remember people taking these back to toysrus because kids couldn't transform them......this was the first series where the toys were pretty complicated that's why after we get Armada where they got easy to transform until the movie line........great series though.....and yes this series only had 13 figures new 3 trains 3 auto brothers 2 Omega Prime 1 Megatron 4 construction
Sideburn from what I understand/remember/heard was designed by a guy who was a designer for another popular Japanese robot IP, forget which one but Gundam or something similar, and sideburn was his first transformer toy he ever designed. And I have no idea if he ever did any other transfer toy. And that's why sideburn kind of stands out amongst the other RID toys. At least that's what I remember hearing tho that could all be some fake rumor or one of those telephone game stories or someone.
I remember I wanted Optimus Prime, but because I was a very small toddler with a weak grasp of my native tongue (let alone english) but I ended up getting the red bot of the build team.
My first transformer was RID Prowl. I later got Megatron for Christmas and it was one of the most awesome transformers I had ever seen. A twin headed dragon transformer? Oh 6 year old Vinny was overjoyed
I never really watched the show. But the toys were great. The autobot brothers were really cool. Great articulation, cool transformations, great robot modes.
Man RID was my first gen. After all these year's of transforming beasts and car's. I'm surprised they never succeeded in combing the two. Like a fire truck rhino robot.
RID 2001 is like the awkward middle child. Squished between the ressurection of the franchise brought on by Beast Wars / Machines, and the golden age made by the Unicron Trilogy, overshadowed by both in different ways.
RID got me into toy collecting. Yeah as a kid I had my G1 and TMNT. As a teen I just gave all my toys away because I'm to grown-up for toys (even though I still wanted my toys). Giving my toys away was a dumb move. I was only four figures away from having every TMNT figure! and i just gave them away! STUPID, STUPID, STUPID! Long story short, I stumbled onto a Toyfare magazine. And in that magazine was an article about the new Transformers toy line. They showed off Optimus Prime and X-Brawn. And that's when I came to the conclusion that I didn't care if I was an adult, I'm buying toys! And as many as I can! And I didn't care if anyone thought if I was a weird nerd! I love toys!
The RiD era was, without a shadow of a doubt, the point were Transformers Decos peaked, NOTHING has ever come close. I will forever dream of a full line of Transmetal 2s with Sky-Byte levels of love and care.
I got into Transformers with Beast Wars, so I definitely remember this line. So many toys from it that I love, and I found it endearing to see Autobot and Decepticon logos on the regular. I'm still bummed that Maximal and Predacon logos mostly disappeared, but I do think both RID 1.0 and Armada really helped to save the franchise from the blunders of Beast Machines. Now, don't get me wrong, there's good toys from Beast Machines, and if you look at Beast Machines as a stand-alone series, it's not bad. The blunder with Beast Machines was subversion of expectations, I.E.(As another pointed out to me in a previous video), "We're changing this because we want to and don't care how it'll upset people. They WILL like it." Given that Maximals and Predacons still aren't central to the line because of this, counter to Raaksha's claims, we can see subverting expectations in that way did not work. It also didn't help that Beast Machines took Beast Wars' scale issue and upped the ante with it. You thought Animated was bad with scale? Beast Machines practically threw out scale entirely, especially not helped with how inaccurate most of the toys were to what was onscreen. Rattrap should NOT be big enough to pick up a Tank Drone with one hand. More accurate Cheetor should not be so massive he can stomp Megatron flat. Nightscream should not tower over Optimus Primal or Thrust. Black Arachnia should have eight proper legs as a spider, not two hanging off her beast mode abdomen. Reasonably sized Cheetor is thin, but not skeletal looking. Silverbolt should look like a condor, not a gryphon. (Which I don't get, alien planet with an organic pre-cybertronian history, and mythical animals are not allowed?) Also, while not a foreseen consequence at the time, so many of the toys are made with translucent plastic. Good luck finding a complete collection that's not suffering Translucent Plastic Syndrome... Oiy, but yeah, if they had avoiding screwing around with the personalities of the characters, like making Optimus into a fanatic in the first season along with Rattrap becoming a true coward and practically an insult to handicapped people for example, we could have gotten Transtech... Moral of the story, don't frag-up the beloved characters in a franchise unless you want to kill said franchise.
There were some really cool designs from that series, which I'd love to see some updates/MP versions of. The Train Brothers, the multi combo Autobot Construction vehicles team, the multiple robot mode/fire truck Oprimus that could combine with Ultra Magnus to form Omega Prime. ... but the design that I'd REALLY love to see upgraded is the 6 mode/10 mode Megatron/Galvatron toy. Most of those modes looked awesome. The land vehicle mode was basically a platform with wheels, but with modern engineering, it could be vastly improved upon.
considering Siege Ultra Magnus's vehicle looks like his RID counterpart and Velocitron Speedia 500 having Scourge, I think we could maybe see a new version of Fire Convoy.
I've actually become a fan of the Beast Machines show over the years, but I agree, there seem to be a lot of missteps even when we separate external factors from the show, like how revising the character models meant the first wave of Beast Machines toys only kind-of looked like their onscreen counterparts. Also missed opportunities, where I am like "You have X and Y in the show, why didn't you just include Z? Of course, I'm not TJ, so I doubt anyone wants to hear my thoughts on it... but I'm gonna share them anyway. Feel free to stop reading if it bothers ya. ;) *Yes, I **_will_** be going full fanboy for large sections of this. XP* 1) Season 2 has more time and budget; maybe some events from it become part of a Season 3. 2) Related to #1, more Strika and Obsidian! 3) Also related to#1, Megatron's new body at the end is *not* based on Optimal Optimus, but Fortress Maximus. 3) Better Maximal designs or general aesthetic. *Not* changing the overall art style, just them. XP 4) Rattrap's Beast Mode is actually his primary mode: his alt mode is now a dragster based on his Transmetal form's third mode. 5) Vehicon drones can combine with their respective Vehicon general (see Energon Combiners). 6) No Botanica, but yes to a triffid or other plant-based Transformer. Yeah, many of these require some explaining, so for the morbidly curious, I will: For as long and drawn out as Beast Machines can be, Season 2 actually felt rushed. My understanding is that, IRL, there were budget and/or time issues, and I believe Beast Wars also suffered from those. It would be great if a few more of the toy-only characters had made it into the show, but even apart from that, a little more time to flesh out *all* the characters was needed. In hindsight, I wonder if it wasn't so much that the show was too slow, but that it had pacing issues in general that made it feel like it was slow when there wasn't major plot progression, *but also* that it was moving too fast when there was. I don't remember if it was right away, but I know at some point I became a big fan of Strika and Obsidian. Both as individuals, and as a couple! Unfortunately, we weren't given enough time with them. My third point seems like it comes out of nowhere, and it does *unless you know the RiD2001 toyline.* There is a toy in that line known as Megatron Megabolt. It was apparently a canceled Beast Machines toy, as the alternate mode very much looks like the floating Megatron head/ship from Beast Machines Season 2, but with tank treads and spiderlegs (yeah, both). There were two repaints also available: Megabolt in 2003 and Megatron (Megahead) in 2005. As for Fortress Maximus, I didn't just mention him because he shows up in RiD2001; *you can take the Megatron Megabolt toy and use it as an alternate head for Fortress Maximus!* It isn't an accident, either; while you do have to pop off the spider-legs, the toys hands are shaped _just right_ to slot into some gaps around a transformation joint near Fort Max's "neck", and the tank treads are just the right size to sit in the gap from the Headmaster. It is still possible the toy was designed with this in mind but there was no plans for Fort Max in the show... but think of how epic it would have been for a giant Optimus Primal to square off against Megatron riding atop a recreated Fort Max body! They could have even repurposed Diagnostic Drone as a personality for the Headmaster bits of Fort Max... Oh, and we also got an oversize Optimus Primal in RiD2001's toyline. Another clear holdover from Beast Machines, but it was a great toy and sized just right to square off against Fort Max. :D I got used to the art style of Beast Machines, and now I even kind of like it... but the Maximals are still mostly ugly as sin. I am *not* saying to avoid the technoorganic look; I am saying to polish it a lot more, especially in robot mode. Rattrap warrants extra attention; I'm not exactly sure why they wanted his bot mode to have wheels, but years later I realized that Beast Mode Rattrap can do just about everything in his rat-based alternate mode that a normal Cybertronian could. I can't remember if he could jack-into computers in Beast Mode or not, but I also never liked how that was just something Rattrap could do. It feels like artificially slapping a "power" onto him to offset all the other stuff he didn't get. We see him even building weapons and tools in his Beast Mode, ones he (and sometimes the other Maximals) can use in Beast Mode. So... why not let him really represent rebalancing the techno and the organic by making his Beast Mode actually his *primary* mode? As a natural extension of realizing this, and building more of his own gadgets (and a few weapons), he now naturally becomes powerful because he can fight like a Beast or a Bot while in Beast Mode. Then, to preserve the wheel-motif, let his alternate mode be a vehicle mode. A more vehicle-like version of his Transmetal form's third mode. Oh, and if Rattrap just building a "gun" feels wrong for Beast Machines... how about he develops rat-like drone versions of himself and those are what turn into his tools (and maybe one into a gun?). Yeah, yeah, *I'm in total fanboy mode,* so if it sounds stupid, it probably is. XD Having the Vehicons double as Combiners is *literally* another fanboy moment; I once wrote a fanfic trying to add more to the Unicron Trilogy setting. Things like adding Stunticons to Velocitron. I wanted to restrict myself to existing mode _a la_ FunPub's offerings, and it occurred to me the Combiner characters from Transformers: Energon had a decent Vehicon vibe to them. Which got me thinking "Wait, why *wouldn't* Megatron have added such a feature to his drones? Imagine the Maximals doing their normal thing, swatting drones left and right. Frustrating even the Vehicon generals. Now imagine Jetstorm flying in formation with his drones only to combine into "Jetstorm Maximus". Even after the Maximals get their bearings and smash up the Combiner's arm and leg... suddenly two more drones fly in to replace the damaged ones, and Jetstorm Maximus is ready to roll again! Oh, c'mon, we're almost done by now. I may be in the minority for not liking Botanica, but I believe the show gave me good reason to. I confess, at first I just thought having plant-based Transformers was silly, but I eventually came around to it. I still don't care much for Botanica. Given how the character was written (including a pacifist streak), having her quickly master the art of transforming *and* then have loads of powers (including offensive ones) *plus* she was the only one who understood that not all forms of light are the same when it comes to raising plants... yeah, I believe she's at least a little bit of a Mary Sue. It isn't that she has any one of these traits, but that she has so many of them. There's one more that might seem silly, but remember when the show aired: Botanica sounded an awful lot like a television "psychic" who went by the name of Miss Cleo. Okay, you made it through this mess. Good job, and may Primus have mercy on your Spark.
@@KamisamanoOtaku I’m surprised that you didn’t have anything to say about Silverbolt or Nightscream’s character. Other than that, good ideas all around.
@@jackofallclaws6672 ...someone actually read that mess? Thanks! XD I'm not sure if I assumed the more general changes to the Maximals had Nightscream and Silverbolt covered, or if they were just spared because I was hyper-fixated on the best (more time for Strika and Obsidian), the worst (Botanica), and the super fanboy moments (Vehicon combiners). While it should have been that first one, it was probably more the latter two. XD My more general things I wanted to fix included enough (or at least more) time and budget for the show, as well as a better Maximal aesthetic, which _should_ have really helped those two as much, if not more, than the rest of the Maximals. Okay, so part of me might want Silverbolt to never be saved, because I
@@KamisamanoOtaku I can kinda understand what you’re saying. It just stuck me as odd that they were excluded, since their treatment was also something that made people not like the show too.
@@jackofallclaws6672 Yeah, I think I get what you're saying too. Overall, I loved the stories behind the first three Vehicon generals, and the revelation of their original identities. I just hated how Silverbolt got shafted in terms of his new beast mode (and maybe even bot mode). I mean, his Jetstorm shtick was so much fun!
G1 cassettes were the original multipack TFs. They always came two to a card (except Buzzsaw...who was also packaged with another toy, namely Soundwave).
I did indeed love the RiD2001 toyline. I used to have a solid collection of it, but IRL needs meant I had to sell it off. I still have the show on DVD, however, and actually think it is good. *Very good,* when you consider it was basically a quick dub of a Japanese show for what was intended as a filler toy series. The DVDs are Region 2, so I haven't been able to watch them recently (could play them on my old computer, but not my current). Still, I wasn't exactly a kid when I first saw it (I would have been 18 or 19 when it first aired), and I rewatched it at least once in its entirety when I first got the DVDs... 15 years ago? I rewatched some episodes a lot more. Not just because I enjoyed them, but I began viewing the series with my nephews. *To me, RiD2001 is basically G1 for 2001.* I mean that in both the good and the bad sense. It is a product of its time and budget and, again, that's both a good and a bad thing. It wasn't high quality animation, but I don't know if I caught any mistakes before they were later pointed out to me. I enjoyed the voice actors and the scripts they were performing. It was far, far from perfect, but I still think it was good. I'd need to rewatch all the series to know for certain (and see some for the first time), but I'd rank RiD2001 as my second favorite Transformers animated series, right behind Transformers: Animated. For anyone wondering what I've seen, that would be all of American G1, Scramble City, Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory!, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, RiD2001, Animated, Prime, Beast Hunters, RiD2015 (except its final season), and Cyberverse. Oh, and bits and pieces of the Unicron Trilogy.
Ultra Magnus was my first big Xmas transformer present, then in January I got Optimus for my birthday. I couldn’t believe it, loved them. I saved up my pocket money for Skybyte but I don’t think he ever came to the UK as I never saw him on the shelves.
I have a weird connection to this series, I was born in 1995, so 6 years old at the time of this show, I have a twin bro and older bro, and our parents got us the Autobros, me Prowl (I love cops), older bro Sideburn (Older but fitting as us twins were more mature and acted like the older bros, he was less mature much like Sideburn), and twin bro X-brawn (The more rational of us 3). It wasn't until years later that I'd actually watch the show, oh and we also got a couple of the Spychanger packs, later for Armada it was mostly smaller figures and Minicons our parents got for us, so we had the Omnicons and Terrorcons from Energon. Around the time of 2007 was when me and my twin bro started looking more into Transformers throughout the years, we got G1 on dvd and the movie, and watched the older tv shows and started checking out TF Wiki when we had free time on the computers at school, to save time we'd even print off whole TF Wiki articles. We still have the small bucket full of them, oh the memories.
This was my first exposure to the brand. I didn’t care about robots, I didn’t care about sharks, but for some reason eight-year-old me had to have that robot shark man I saw on that Kmart toy shelf. And the rest is history.
'01 RID was the absolute top of transformers quality for me. the toys were scaled nicely for the trucks and cars, you got the predacons to be the beasts of the 90's, the rubber on the tires was amazing, even if it went bad after a good 8 years. The ultra magnus was bar none the best car carrier that functioned ever. the combination of Omega Prime is something I would LOVE to see remastered. Re-releases were great to see, even if considered lazy (looking at you, MP-10 recolors). This optimus prime beats out cybertron optimus for me, for how much you get in one package for play value, and it actually looks like a fire fighter in the 'battle mode' headsculpt. Lots to be desired, but so, SO much innovation that paved the way for the unicron trilogy engineering. Thanks for the video on my favorite toyline series so far.
I’ve always been fascinated by this line but never really got any toys from it. I had a couple spychangers but that’s about it. I finally got Optimus Prime last month. Incredible toy. Bought the brothers and the constructions as well. I’m gonna be getting the rest of the line at some point.
I just wish Hasbro would get this series out on DVD because having to rely on streaming services or the internet just to re-watch the series is a huge pain for somebody who hates streaming services.
RID needs a complete series release. Ultra Magnus and Galvatron from this arc need an update. Skybite would be a great Legacy update just for getting a more posable shark mold. Not more than Polar Claw but I digress.
I was a very young teenager by the time RID came out, so seeing the cartoon become more kid-friendly after Beast Machines irritated me at the time. Yet somehow Armada won me over. I don't understand my own childhood logic now, but I appreciate RID 1.0 a lot more in hindsight. Even back then I had to admit the toys were great even if I didn't like the show.
There are technically 2 4 component combiners that predate Build King. If you count Hi-Test and Throttle as separate components from Darkwing and Dreadwind, Dreadwing then counts as a 4 man team. And then there is Big Rescue Force. the European exclusive repaints of 4 of the 6 parts of Liokaiser, who can sorta still combine.
I have watched this whole series recently with my 10 yr. old son, half on DVD and the rest on you tube. He loved it and found it sort of funny too. I loved Beast Wars but am not a fan of Beast Machines (and I tried really hard, too, even putting myself through the pain of re- watching it).
Besides the g1 movie this was my introduction to autobots and deceoticons and i really enjoyed it not as much as beast wars but still, after the depressing beast machines series this was a breath of fresh air that got me back into transformers, which was short lived as armada's terrable cg turned me off that series and it wasen't until animated and the live action movies that i got back into transformers.
I was disapointed with the Tranformers movie Rise of the Beasts. Not once did Optimus Primal say, "Thats just Prime". That was his saying like Prime's "Transform and Roll out". Though Primal's can be used in a lot more situations, good or bad. I use it often and its awesome when someone gets it.
RID needs more love.
It was my favorite transformers anime besides armada.
Disney owns it sadly
That's why I will get a Legacy Scourge and RID Scourge figure
It really does.
It gets love, it’s just that era came and went and the fans just grew up and started adulting, same with UT
We absolutely need reissues of the RID line
me and my yellowed and cracked Prowl agree lol
Yeah I still have a Mega Octane and other Commandos but I need an Earthspark Repaint for these Commandos
Rid 2001 needs a lot of New love in life
I remember helping my grandmother pick out "gifts for my cousins" on a Walmart trip while this line was out.
Hard to believe the dub premiered 3 days before 9/11.
and the first episode starts with megatron attacking new york city
and one luckily got remade

I loved RiD as a kid, and it's still probably my favorite incarnation of Transformers.
RID 2001 is kinda the black sheep of the franchise.
@@GladDestronger oh ho ho ho~! That would be beast machines.
@@GladDestronger In a sense, it is, because the third episode aired on September 11, 2001
A year later and look what we’re getting!
Biggest thing I remember from Transformers RID 2001
"Who's the baddest Shark around, who's the Baddest shark in town. Skybyte that's me"
I was 9 years old when RID hit, and I was obsessed ! Looking back now, my mother must have bought damn near every figure for me. Great series, and great video !
I'm pretty sure you watched the third episode of RID when 9/11 happened
@@LiamDyC?

real talk RID 2001 is one of my absolute favorite series of transformers, always has been. It truly needs new updates to the figures, like omega prime, rail racer, gigatron, etc.
When I was a kid, my brother had “Rail Racer” he was one of my favorites! ❤
As a fellow kiwi i wanted these and landfill.. sadly wasnt to be
I love RID - when they came out, I was actually able to buy them with my own money from my first job.
A few months back I bought some old RID figures in great to MISB and have been really happy with the purchase! I have fond memories of RID!
RID was my first real exposure to Transformers, and I will forever love the show and its characters
I love this show, Sky byte is for me one of the top 5 predacons in history
🎵 Who's the coolest shark around, who's the coolest shark in town... 🎵
RID 2001 was my childhood and I will forever love it because of that it's why Optimus to me is always a fire truck and Megatron a dragon
Don't forget the main star character sky byte.
Also yeah, Transtech is something I want to see be returned too
Love the Car Robots line. This was the line that I started seriously collecting Transformers.
I love the Optimus and Ultra Magnus beef about leadership of Matrix in RID
I remember this toy line fondly, I had Prowl, Spy Changer X Brawn, the Falcon guy, Wars, Hot Shot, Scourge the blue car you showed on here, and even the Universe repaint of Prowl
RID was the one introducing me to Transformers as a whole. Enough said.
My grandfather bought me RID Optimus and Ultra Magnus as a kid and my god were those toys awesome X33
Some episodes never aired because it had tall buildings being damaged, including one where Sky-Byte opts to save a space needle restaurant,
Robots In Disguise would have their show name reused for another toyline, which may be what today's fans think of when they hear the name if not the IDW comic series that wasn't related to this series.
Yeah this line is amazing I have a complete in box collection and from past I remember people taking these back to toysrus because kids couldn't transform them......this was the first series where the toys were pretty complicated that's why after we get Armada where they got easy to transform until the movie line........great series though.....and yes this series only had 13 figures new
3 trains
3 auto brothers
2 Omega Prime
1 Megatron
4 construction
Sideburn from what I understand/remember/heard was designed by a guy who was a designer for another popular Japanese robot IP, forget which one but Gundam or something similar, and sideburn was his first transformer toy he ever designed. And I have no idea if he ever did any other transfer toy. And that's why sideburn kind of stands out amongst the other RID toys. At least that's what I remember hearing tho that could all be some fake rumor or one of those telephone game stories or someone.
Rewatching this now, I was caught off-guard by the normal intro lol
I Love This Transformers Show!
One of my favorite TF shows, really glad your talking about it
I had both Optimus and ultra magnus when they came out cause they could combine and loved the idea
This was the last Transformers show I watched as a kid, I didn’t return to watching the Transformers until Animated launched
Probably my favorite lines, that could do no wrong in my eyes. Fun show, great toys and set the stage for many future toylines.
Rail racer is still one of my biggest grails right now
Man RID was my first gen.
VERY fond memories of RID 2001...then theres Sideburn.....goddang Sideburn...His Asymmetry makes my eyes burn.
The Car Robots/R.i.D. '01 cartoon was okay, but what really shined were the toys themselves.
Love my Utlramagnus and Fire Convoy..
considering Siege Ultra Magnus's vehicle looks like his RID counterpart and Velocitron Speedia 500 having Scourge, I think we could maybe see a new version of Fire Convoy.
a Trans-Tech episode would be REALLY cool. I also kinda wanna see a Let's Fix for Beast Machines.
XP*
1) Season 2 has more time and budget; maybe some events from it become part of a Season 3.
2) Related to #1, more Strika and Obsidian!
3) Also related to#1, Megatron's new body at the end is *not* based on Optimal Optimus, but Fortress Maximus.
3) Better Maximal designs or general aesthetic. *Not* changing the overall art style, just them. XP
4) Rattrap's Beast Mode is actually his primary mode: his alt mode is now a dragster based on his Transmetal form's third mode.
5) Vehicon drones can combine with their respective Vehicon general (see Energon Combiners).
6) No Botanica, but yes to a triffid or other plant-based Transformer.
Yeah, many of these require some explaining, so for the morbidly curious, I will:
For as long and drawn out as Beast Machines can be, Season 2 actually felt rushed.
I got used to the art style of Beast Machines, and now I even kind of like it... but the Maximals are still mostly ugly as sin. XD
Having the Vehicons double as Combiners is *literally* another fanboy moment; I once wrote a fanfic trying to add more to the Unicron Trilogy setting.
Thanks! XD
I'm not sure if I assumed the more general changes to the Maximals had Nightscream and Silverbolt covered, or if they were just spared because I was hyper-fixated on the best (more time for Strika and Obsidian), the worst (Botanica), and the super fanboy moments (Vehicon combiners).
Great vid TJ. I liked RiD, Neil Kaplan did a good job as Optimus.
Still my favorite Opitmus Prime design, the one I got as a kid is in ruin so I got the Japanese reissue.
Robots in Disguise
An underrated series
Show it love, Hasbro
I love RID. Please Hasbro give it more love! So many unique and new characters were exciting to see as a kid. Sky Byte best boy
Ultra Magnus was my first big Xmas transformer present, then in January I got Optimus for my birthday. I couldn’t believe it, loved them. I saved up my pocket money for Skybyte but I don’t think he ever came to the UK as I never saw him on the shelves.
I still have my Landfill set! The last one I got was Grimlock, Wedge, Heavy Load and Hightower were the first ones I got.
For what I'm assuming is gonna be legacy year 3, we NEED a new Optimus Prime, Megatron, Skybyte and the autobot brothers
This was my first exposure to the brand. I didn’t care about robots, I didn’t care about sharks, but for some reason eight-year-old me had to have that robot shark man I saw on that Kmart toy shelf. And the rest is history.
Spychangers... At present, we call them Core Class, and between that, it's Scout/Legends Class (after Cybertron's Legends of Cybertron).
I got all the combating as a kid, but I couldn't get brawl, the tank, until my family took a vacation to Florida
I found him at a Walmart there
I just wish Hasbro would get this series out on DVD because having to rely on streaming services or the internet just to re-watch the series is a huge pain for somebody who hates streaming services.
RID needs a complete series release. Ultra Magnus and Galvatron from this arc need an update. Skybite would be a great Legacy update just for getting a more posable shark mold. Not more than Polar Claw but I digress.
omega prime was the one toy I wanted the most from this series
I’ve got the legacy scourge and I think it’s badass. I love the new colours for it while still respecting the original
RID 2001 the first time we get prime as a fire engine
one was so bad it had to be rebuilt
My first ever Grimlock came from this line, was so confused whenever he showed up as a dinosaur afterwards.
Crosswise from 2001 RID was the first transformer I ever owned, I still have him :' )
I had rid devastator and scourge.
The Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus toy are my favorite Transformers ever I love this series
Best transformers toy line ever done.
Transtech still needs to be made. The cartoon & Toys. Complete the G1 Beast Wars story line. Only one Transtech toy came out in the RID Toy line.
6:10 I believe this is based on a Brave concept.
This is not possible! Been messing with these toys all day (maintainance of storage containers).
Keep up the awesome work!
@TJOmega fun fact the studio who did Car Robots also did YuGiOh Duel Monsters
I actually saw 4 of 6 of the rail bots other day at my local toy shop the aerial bots too
I was disapointed with the Tranformers movie Rise of the Beasts. Not once did Optimus Primal say, "Thats just Prime". That was his saying like Prime's "Transform and Roll out". Though Primal's can be used in a lot more situations, good or bad. I use it often and its awesome when someone gets it.
