      Love your thoughts as always, Clemps. I'm liberally vibrating with anticipation at learning more about the game from your deeper analyses which are doubtless on the way. Just try and not make us wait too much :D In the meanwhile, I'll be digging into the game from every conceivable angle.

      +MrInuhanyou123 That's the thing though, they wouldn't be using the Scalebound IP. This idea of turning it into Drakengard would be like how Dark Souls was basically Demon's Souls (at least, that's the idea).

    There's still hope for this industry...

    • @1shoryuken
      @1shoryuken 7 лет назад +35

      That's because Taro's games have always been plagued with technical issues. Like Drakengard 3 was complete trash with it's performance, hence why it wasn't well recieved. Having Platinum Games fix the gameplay of his eccentric JRPG design is like giving Picasso a paint brush.

      This part is true of Automata as well. It boggles my mind that some reviewers beat ending A and called it good. That's like starting the tutorial and saying you know what the whole game is going to be like.

    The thing about most robots having emotionless voices is actually addressed in the third playthrough. There's a brief segment where you control Pascal in the village, and when some of the children greet him, he remarks that their speech is getting better. I'm assuming this means that Pascal is teaching the robots how to actually emote with their voices, since they all know how to speak to begin with.
    Either way, I can't wait to see your analysis video and what you think of things. This game has still left me with some really interesting questions that I'll be mulling over for weeks.

    When I went in there I thought it was quite quaint that they formed a religion. Quite a nice way to show them becoming more human like. Course until you go down the elevator and see the hallway lit by torches, making you feel uneasy. And then you continue on, and discover this is a DEATH CULT YEAH. The ensuing dungeon is great, and the music completes it. I find myself saying BECOME AS GODS randomly. Definitely one of the most memorable places in games, along with the copied city. I was expecting more caves underground, but exiting to find an all white city left me speechless. Amazing work.
    Anyway, onto ending B. GLORY TO MANKIND.

    I've been holding off on Nier, despite buying the Black Box Edition, because I wanted to get through Zelda first. I knew if I played Nier first there'd be no way I could get into Zelda after that. I'll be starting it up this coming weekend, since it's the start of my spring break.

    • @MrNekoSuzu
      @MrNekoSuzu 7 лет назад +4

      I've been playing both simultaneously, and I have to say, they highlight each other fairly well. As far as open world games go, they're pretty different, with Zelda placing more emphasis on the freedom of exploration and Nier placing more on plot and combat. I find that it's pretty easy to jump between them, and I don't feel like I'm getting genre fatigue at all.

    I think the tone of pascal's voice may be because she lived for a very long time - and studied humanity for much longer than most other robots that you get to talk to? Nothing concrete, though.

    Long ass post incoming. (SPOILERS) credits to +ShutUpAdachi
    2B being 2E really forces you to look back and recontexualize a lot of what happened throughout the game. Specifically, much of the interaction between 2B and 9S changes when you take this into account as well as the implication that they've actually known each other for a much longer time than the game would have you think turns their relationship into something far more tragic. Just a few examples.
    -Why 2B in particular is such a stickler for the "Emotions are prohibited" rule. She wants to keep herself from getting too attached to someone she's been forced to kill repeatedly. She obviously fails in that regard.
    -Why she's so insistent about repeating that rule to 9S and keeping his curiosity in check. She doesn't want him poking his nose around information that might end up forcing her hand.
    -Why she goes from stoic indifference to being on the verge of tears at the end of the first level of the game when a person she's supposedly known for only about an hour is dying.
    -A very subtle scene when you're first in the Bunker and 2B and 9S repeat "Glory to Mankind" and 2B balls her fist. She knows that the reason they're waging this ultimately meaningless war to begin with is a complete lie, a lie that results in countless android deaths and forces her to keep killing someone very close to her.
    -And for that matter, why someone so completely professional like 2B is fine with speaking surprisingly casually with 9S. Telling him that she doesn't need to call him ma'am, accidentally calling him Nines not too long after saying she wouldn't, etc.
    -Why 2B was chosen to go with 9S for a mission that was initially primarily just recon, a question he asks himself shortly before entering the City Ruins for the first time. It's her job to keep an eye on him.
    -Her words of "It always ends like this" after she kills 9S at the end of Route A and B, a line that initially doesn't make much sense by itself when you think back in it.
    -Why she was chosen to dispatch the deserters in "YoRHa Betrayers". It's her true function.
    -Why she was prodding 9S so much about accepting the "Amnesia" quest. At first it seems like it's just 2B being jealous (and it partially might be) but he was also on the verge of discovering something that could've been fatal for him.
    And the fact that 9S apparently *knew*, even if maybe subconsciously, the entire time is opening a whole 'nother can of worms.
    That scene in the second recovery unit where 9S finds a bunch of 2B's data inside, calling them his memories, lends itself to a theory I have about how 9S has been able to keep himself from forgetting everything after each death, namely that he's been using 2B's memories rather than his own to keep himself up to date.
    And the fact that 9S really does care about and want to connect with 2B in spite of all the bottled up hate and resentment that he tries to keep in check. By using her memories, he finds himself able to sense and understand the intense turmoil she goes through every time, forcing himself to empathize with her in a way that he almost doesn't want to.
    The whole part about using 2B's memories to prevent himself from forgetting is only a theory though, so take it with a grain of salt. It's also entirely possible it's a subconscious feeling rather than something he's entirely aware of.
    And before this goes on for even longer than it has, I also want to point out that 2B's true role is the likely reason why 9S, a scanner model not designed for combat, is even capable of such in the first place, and that he's even good enough to slaughter a group of 2B models. Getting stuck with a partner who's been ordered to kill you if you learn too much makes it a good idea to reprogram yourself with serious self-defense capabilities.
    And speaking of those 2B models, why 9S was so ecstatic to murder them. He was venting. Really, really venting.
    And then there's the whole interplay of sex and violence thing YoRHa units were programmed with, which is yet another can of worms that I won't go into because this comment is crazy long as it is. Prolly a Freudian thing.
    Finally, an unrelated tip. That doorway that was barricaded, located at the top of a really, really high ladder in the city ruins? It's clear now. Has been since the start of Route C.

    So...I'm going to find the least spoiler-y way to say this, so I'm going to talk very vaguely here, but I think you might see where I'm going with it, at least if you played past a certain point in the game.
    So yeah, kinda-SPOILERS
    Ready?
    Okay.
    So at around 7:30, Clemps mentions the "Forbidden from showing emotions" bit. I can't remember anyone other than 2B ever actually talking about this. And I'm pretty sure it's just something she insists on saying to 9S specifically. If you've gotten past a certain point in the story you might have an idea why she'd insist over and over to 9S to cut back on the emotions, at least when in battle, yet no one else really having an issue with it. MAYBE the Commander, who would do so for the same reasons.
    Double Spoiler conclusion:
    Basically, I think she's just making it up.

    • @pabbroe
      @pabbroe 7 лет назад +5

      this makes a lot of sense, good thinking

    • @JackgarPrime
      @JackgarPrime 7 лет назад

      +SeBr404 Then I take it you've gotten past the point which I would've been talking about, right?
      For the record, I've gotten every ending except E and I think Y. So unless something in E seriously changes the context of certain things we know about 2B and the things that happened prior to Automata, this will continue to be my main theory here.
      There's a lot that goes unsaid in this game, but can definitely be construed from what we are told and shown. And in this case, there are some really good reasons you can see why she'd make this up, and be so insistent on repeating it, even if she also doesn't follow through a lot of the time.

    • @pabbroe
      @pabbroe 7 лет назад

      sadly only completed ending A B and a few of the non mainline ones but i could gather the way 2B and 9S relationship was going to head (also seen a few spoilers accidentally). Your thinking makes complete sense but it would be interesting to see what Taro has to say on the topic or whether he'll just retcon it in some other way.

    • @JackgarPrime

    • @user-li5cr6wv5b
      @user-li5cr6wv5b 7 лет назад +9

      I don't think she is making it up. Androids are given emotions and shaped like humans for a reason. The ban on emotions might also be there for a reason. It's something like a commandment 'Don't let your mind wonder'.
      And we all know the reason 2B is paired with 9S. She is sick and tired of doing this again and again, so my guess is - reminding him of regulations, their purpose and mission is her way to keep him from getting in trouble, in hope she will never have to do her job again.

    I'm really glad I'm not the only one bothered by the "rule" about androids showing emotion. Within the first ten minutes of the game I was wondering why the androids even have emotions and why nothing's being done by 2B's superiors to suppress them if they aren't allowed.
    Now I'm nine hours in, the rule hasn't been brought up since the opening, and I'm wondering why it was mentioned at all. From what you said, it sounds like the rule won't have any bearing on the story going forward, so I guess I'll just forget about it.

    • @MrInuhanyou123
      @MrInuhanyou123 7 лет назад +43

      spoilers
      its not really a 'rule', so much as just a reminder that they are soldiers who have to focus on the mission. 2B herself throws herself into missions for a specific reason, but Yorha itself are full on recreations of humanity in order to contrast with the fact that they are in fact not humans. This game is full on existential theory, they even poke fun at it with a character named Jean Paul(Sarte in Japanese), the father of the concept of existentialism

      I feel like the "rule" is something that was written when YorHa was created but no one in YorHa actually follows. 6O mentions during a sidequest that the Commander is only a hardass on the outside but breaks a lot of "rules" herself(doesn't clean her room or performs her routine maintenance like she should), she also let's a lot of the other androids get away with stuff, like 6O and her horoscope adventure or when 6O calls 2B upset because she got rejected(and then has a crush on 2B).
      Without saying spoilers, I feel 2B is repeating that rule for her own benefit, rather than for 9S since the commander routinely lets shit slide. I don't think its a plot hole or anything.

      Basically when you actually read into things the no emotions rule really IS just one of 2B's character quirks, like Clemps said he wanted, because no one else follows it. You actually find out like 20 minutes into the game when you go around talking to all the other androids on the bunker and all of them are showing emotion and talking about their side interests, hobbies, etc. Basically 2B is just kind of a weird asshole who's way too strict about the rules, and other people even call her out on it, so it's very much an intentional part of her character.

    Story time! Hi Clemps!
    I found your channel from your Legend of Legaia review popping up in my recommended list, and from there I found your Nier analysis. Because of your videos, I preordered Automata faster than you could say "Android booty" as soon as I found out about its existence. This was 3 weeks ago, and all that time I was itching, DYING waiting for the day I could pop into GameStop and snag a copy. I woke up early and picked up Automata right before work, and all day I could think of nothing but lubricating my controller with the tears and sweat I knew I would be shedding.
    A windstorm hit the city I'm in and wiped out power.
    I was livid all night that night; I couldn't do anything but sit in the dark looking at the case of Automata by candlelight, dying inside. The next day (my one day off last week) I decided I couldn't take it anymore and drove out to find an electric generator to power my PS4 and monitor. This proved harder than it sounded at the time, as everyone and their fathers (literally, mine did the same thing hours after me) went out and bought every generator within 20 miles.
    21 miles and 3 hours or searching for, purchasing, and setting up a small generator later it was ready. It was messy from all the rewiring I had to do, my hands reeked of the gas I accidentally spilled on them, and it was freezing fucking cold all night but, I had done it. I played the shit out of Automata, and I do not regret a single thing that happened that day. Thanks, Clemps.

Somehow, even if I have no interest in the games you speak about you still make them interesting. Thank you for adding Subtitles/Captions, too. When i heard the line "Emotions are prohibited" i immediately made the connection that 2B doesn't mean it to be taken literally but that it was rather her way of stopping 9S from his friendly chatter which she has an understandable aversion of. I was extremely reminded of the character Aika from the Anime Aria who would often say something like "Embarrassing remarks are prohibited".
    Interestingly the Operator 60 and 210 have the same kind of contrast and even the PODs do this.

    • @EinFelsbrocken
      @EinFelsbrocken 7 лет назад

      YEESS!! I thought so too, it seemed like the operators were mismatched. When 210 cries and laments that her life is over after she is rejected, 2B just closes the call and makes a dry remark (pretty funny tho), I just thought "yeah, 9S probably would be all ear". Then, in playthrough B, 9S has 6D as his operator, and daaaamn, she just acts straight up like an extremely severe mother, with 9S just "fine"-ing her all the time. It really seems that its done on purpose.

    2B doesn't care if androids show emotions, she just doesn't want to get attached to 9S *again* that's why she's being harsh to him and him only.
    All androids have personalities and emotions. Her own Operator is like a schoolgirl on hormones but 2B doesn't tell her to stop.
    I thought this was pretty obvious, since 2B(E) has a job to do regarding 9s, emotions just make things harder. Hence her quote at the end of ending A and B. (Why does it always ends like this).

    Just watched all the Drakengard and Nier Analysis videos, thoroughly entertaining! I'm really feeling like buying Nier Automata now. Though I haven't played either series yet, the impression I got from your videos is that despite gameplay flaws, Drakengard and Nier are both worthwhile and intriguing experiences. Also, that their main strengths are: unorthodox storytelling, characters, and music all creating a unique Yoko Taro game. I wonder if my impressions are similar to whatever vision you had in creating those analysis videos?

    RE: the credits schmup segment in ending E:
    There's a point a couple names after the marketing div where I stopped being able to actually penetrate all the bullets that were being shot even when I dodged basically pixel perfect. I don't think its actually possible to win alone, and I figure that it's probable they added some dummy accounts to the system to allow people to beat it that got to that segment "first," probably testers names or something.
    Now, I think Yoko absolutely wrote this as a something that was impossible to do alone, and that's influenced by a very particular reading I did of that game's message. I feel like it's absolutely true that this game explores what it *means* to be human as a central theme, even *the* central theme, as you say in the video. My reading is that the actual *thesis* of the game is that "Being human means always trying and always failing, and learning to live and accept that."
    ~A bit goes into that reading, and I'll go into that without to much specific detail, after here so if you wanna avoid that in a year old game, there you go.~
    First, there's the scene where it obviously vocally explores this, on the end scene of Ending E, the two pods talking about their embarrassment, and how they accept that thats how being sentient and alive is. that's easy, a gimme.
    Now, consider that many of the sidequests end in the self-destruction of the machine life form that you help, or otherwise the death or emotional collapse of that character. These characters, placed into a drastic setting, put their entire being into just one goal, with the machines, 9s calls them "treasures." Think about the speedy robot, that you race; the martial arts robot, that you fight; and the peace-loving robot, that you protect. Two of them end their last mission with them just fucking killing themselves, and the last robot becoming disillusioned with peace entirely. Consider also the boss that you fight in the amusement park, her backstory is that she loves Jean-P. and when he didnt return the feelings, began to augment and beautify herself with the corpses of her dead robot brethren. These robots do so out of the feelings associated with failing at their ultimate goal, failing to meet their own extreme and impossible goal.
    Consider the big twist regarding YorHA.. I wont directly say what it is, but you know what it is if you played the game, and probably if you dont because its painfully obvious. 9S discovers this because hes a high ended hacking model. It's easy for him to find out, and essentially his whole purpose for existing is overthrown and hes left to deal with the aftermath on his own values. He's not even punished for the intrusion, and it's implied to be an event which was planned for. 9S at this time figures that his values now center around 2B as a companion more than they do around protecting humanity from the machines. He's seen for himself the latent humanity within machines, and probably considers defection with 2B since the whole urgency of living has fallen away. This is when the fate of 2B manifests. Following the second destruction of his core value, his 'treasure' if you will, he mentally breaks down and vows to destroy every machine lifeform, which he had considered to be worthy of respect and possibly endowed with something like sapience.
    Take both of these sets of events and consider their overall arc. It follows this description: (1.) a human-like being has set a goal for itself that it considers more important than any other. (2.) this being fails to achieve the goal. (3.) The being either destroys itself physically or destroy its own identity in drastic a personal value reconfiguration, due to the negative feelings associated with the failure.
    This is bad. Yoko wants us to see this as a failure, a tragic and avoidable event, one where something is *missing.* The missing element is the *willingness* to move on and accept failure.
    Consider, the story of A2. She felt personally betrayed by YorHA and so defected in order to properly exact revenge on the machines by destroying HVTs and such. She comes to have that desire subverted by sparing Pascal and coming to learn about Pascals village. She eventually decides to help Pascal out, and eventually the village is destroyed by rampaging robots due to the destruction of their command net. She then proceeds to go to the tower and the climax of the game occurs with her doing her very best to destroy the tower which is a weapon that would drastically impact the status of life on earth, and represents an extremely powerful entity that is the coalescing identity of all machine lifeforms. She almost certainly dies on the tower, as it collapses.
    Consider, finally, the story of the Pods. This is simple and easy, and it's intentionally made very easy to understand. The pods share information about the androids they follow and eventually this communication and analysis leads to sapience. When they achieve their newfound sapience, they decide to try rebuilding 9S and 2B away from YorHA and possibly with their memories and such intact.
    Take both of these arcs and consider them in the same way as the first two. They follow a similar but deviant arc: (1.) a sapient being sets a goal for itself. (2.) it fails to achieve the goal. (3.) the being experiences extremely powerful emotions associated with the failure. (4. A.) the being sets a new goal for itself while maintain its previous morals and synthesizing them with the new status of events. (4. B.) the being takes the old goal, and gives it another try.
    Yoko wants us to see this, and see that it's the better of the two presented options. He wants us to think about the way that they have to overcome hardship, and that there's much more beyond simply the initial failure.
    Part of what makes this reading interesting to me is how it fits with Yoko Taro's actual life. He's, commercially, a barely mitigated failure. His games don't usually sell well, and they come out muddled and confused by poor game play and graphics. His friendship with his main producer, Yosuke Saito is perhaps the only person keeping him writing games for Squinex. All these especially drastic considering what has been called "ganbatte culture" in Japan, reinforcing an ethic that failure is extremely discouraged. Yoko continues learning and enjoying making games, and accepting the embarrassment that is associated with nominal failure, with the struggle to get more money to make games, and what have you, and so in a very real way, this story reading comes from examining Yoko Taro's own career as well as the events of the story.
    Of course, this falls on one side of a very divisive issue of whether artists ought to be considered as a component of their art, so it's *very* okay to read into differently.

    After getting the five main endings, I can safely say that Nier: Automata is pretty great and is even one of my personal favorite games. I'm just worried the normies are going to be deterred from getting to the third run, where the game's narrative gets really interesting, with 9s's imminently somewhat redundant playthrough barring entry.

    The emotionless rule... I just figured it to be some archaic rule that no one follows, except for that occasional straight and narrow character. Or it could just be a quip at how robot androids, perfect and "unhuman" as they may be, are capable of hogging up precious cloud data with their bootleg mp3's. Makes the comparison between them and robots a pinch interesting...

    Why is Accord selling weapons to the android resistance and what is she doing in this timeline? Also: What's behind the damned doors

      Maybe Accord actually comes from that time, and was brought to Drakengard 3 timelines to understand what caused all this mess ? Or I dunno, she just chillin ?

    people keep saying they have unanswered questions about the game, but wont say what those questions are.. id really like to hear them because it would give me something to look into. i felt that nier automata was pretty straight forward and easy to understand.

      Yeah pretty much everything is there. Some answers are not spoon fed to players, but are still there

      Well, there's Eve's case : the Cult of the Watchers Tattoo, the Red Eye Disease coming back in a different form... Who actually are Adam and Eve, why do they connect so much with Drakengard ?
      And what is Accord doing in this timeline ?

    I was kinda expecting Accord to appear in this game. She only gets mentioned though.

    Nice vid mate. But i kinda have to point out the part where you said the peaceful machines has a boring tone and doesnt reflect emotion. I think its well staged. Because it made you feel Pascal was more real and relatable after you meet all those tone dead machines. If all the machine talks like Pascal, she wouldn't stand out as much in the story anymore. ^^
