    NieR: Automata is an incredibly philosophical and artistic game. Here, I share my thoughts having played the game a second time... 3 years later. This video is as spoiler free as I could make it. I hope you enjoy my new style of video creation. *Don't FORGET to tune in (hopefully on Saturday, 4/25) for my new show that I hinted at last year. It's going to be... different and fun.*
    Special thanks to anyone who has supported me on Patreon this last year, as I was able to upgrade my camera and buy new audio equipment (used in this video) for the channel with the donations. Thanks again!

      Surprising that you mentioned the game is a CYCLE. Since an automaton ( in software engineering for the base logic of Artificial Intelligence) is a constant cycle/loop. Which is what all these machines and androids are boiled down to, essentially they are Just state loops and automatons.
      I love how you said when you reach the end you expect something but no it just loops back and it's futile. Kinda made me think, When an AI gets to the final state in a state machine (if it has a conscious) maybe it thinks it's at the end of it and will break free and be independent and discover more to life. But then it just loops back through each state.
      I hope that makes u see also how deep the game is ✌️

    Nier: Automata is one of my favorite games ever. a beautiful world filled with beautiful music and silky smooth combat. but that's not all, the game challenges you not just ethically, but philosophically. you start questioning why you do the things you do, and provokes emotion with every cutscene, not to mention the 4th wall breaks. I might be ignorant but I can't think of another game to blend all those factors into one game.

    What's problematic is that the rest of mainstream media didn't really evolve with SOMA, Ex Machina and Nier Automata. These gems are so far ahead even new shows or games that are still going 'RoBoTs HavE FeElIngS ToO'.
    The entire point of these games aren't really about robots more than they are about giving a new perspective on the importance of particularly memories and how they shape a person. It's still about the human experience, not just some 'RoOoOBoOoTs aRe CoOl ToO'
    In like 10 years maybe we are gonna get a mainstream series that tackles consciousness as though you weren't a fucking child like these pieces did. But normally i hate this subject in media because these bad bois already tackled it so well and most other stuff is just so insufferably worse.

      My point is just that SOMA, Nier and Ex Machina are some of the few if not only pieces of work that deal with their themes without assuming that you're a child like most pieces of media we see today. Most media pieces today about these sort of themes are kinda just sending out the message that robots are super cool and maybe humans should just die out already, when the point of these three pieces were never to really comment about robots, but to explore the human condition through a robot story. They are outstanding Pokémon games - Whilst I love Automata, think that it’s story and presentation is a step above all, HGSS are arguably the peak of Pokémon that has most likely touched the hearts of every child with a Nintendo DS. Effort and soul shines through that game, the emotions it subtly evokes within you as younger kid going along this journey and becoming a Pokémon Master is what hooks so many people to the series even more as they get older. No, it’s not as deep as NieR, nor does it tell a story half as good, but it does something different to NieR and it excels at it, too.

      Make sure to not skip the sidequests, they're good,
      collect weapons, pods, pod mods, joke endings, switch up your playstyle by changing and merging your chips to upgrade them so you become more powerful so buy the chip space extension from the lady in the Resistance camp as soon as you're able to.
      Oh,
      And don't stop after the first ending(ending A),
      After you play through the game a second time as 9S (mostly the same as A but with new game mechanics but you keep your lvl and stuff) (ending B), you unlock a third character and the second half of the story starts from there. That's right, the second half of the game and the story is locked behind the first 2 playthroughs and there are people who stop after they're at ending A, despite the game even saying "Congrats on beating 1/4 of the story, new game+ unlocked" and they miss out on the middle and ending of this beautiful game which breaks my heart.
      Good luck soldier, stick through the end...

    The passion behind this game is unmatched in my opinion. You can tell how much love and devotion went into every single inch of this game by how it pushes boundaries and how beautiful it is. Everything between the music, the story, the themes and the ending E makes this game a masterpiece. One I will likely never forget. This game is one that has a real power to resonate, one that can actually move people to look inward on themselves to ask how compassionate of a person they are and if they are willing to prove it. Game of a generation, for sure.

    My favorite game of all time. The only point I would push back on is that things do actually change quite a bit each playthrough. The second, while replaying many of the sections of the 1st, has new sections as well as well as adding to the narrative in the parts that do repeat through the unique ability of 9s, hacking. Playing through as him is also a major difference. The 3rd playthrough is completely unique and takes place after the 1st and 2nd. The first NieR's multiple playthroughs actually function much closer to how you described.

  • @DrAlexandrius
    @DrAlexandrius 4 года назад +2

    My biggest problem with video games being labeled as art is that most games require a compromise of their artistic attributes in order to make the game user friendly and accessible to more people, (or people in general, regardless of the number) a game's ultimate goal is to make money for the company, there might or might not be passion involved but that doesn't change the true purpose of the game's development. Video games posses art in themselves but only in certain segments, and most of the time that art suffers because of the game's ultimate goal, models are simplified, textures are compressed and mechanics are dumbed down. I believe Hideo is right when he says that video games are more of a museum than an art piece, but that being said when you break down the game most of the time you get mediocre art pieces at best. Things in video games are not made for the sake of being made, they are made for the sake of appealing to someone else other than the game's developer, therefore the game's overall appearance and design is dictated not by the creator but by someone who will eventually consume that product. Another thing that bothers me with games being labeled as art is that all games are made as a sort of a playground that allows the players to be creative in some way, therefore i would much rather be inclined to label them as a new media canvas of some sorts than a standalone art piece. I haven't played NieR, but by your video's analysis it seems like a game that creates a setting, asks the questions, and then answers them. Also i don't believe that art has to be many-worded to be deep and therefore good, really simple and seemingly irrelevant things and motifs can drive someone to deep contemplation concerning something such as life or death or free will, just having something be thoroughly set up and based around a seemingly deep subject doesn't equate to it being deep and/or good.
    I understand your point, that the game does well, trough it's presentation and mechanics, to convey a certain message that it's trying to convey to the player, i don't believe that that makes it art, however i would say it's a good use of the medium and as such a good idea and narrative conveying piece, if that makes sense.

    • @ArawnOfAnnwn
      @ArawnOfAnnwn 4 года назад

      The vast majority of the paintings, sculptures and music in existence was also created to make money - artists are still human beings with human needs and wants, after all. They were not made simply "for the sake of being made". Some of that is still considered great art. A commercial incentive does not preclude passion or artistic vision.

    • @DrAlexandrius
      @DrAlexandrius 4 года назад

      @@ArawnOfAnnwn Yes i agree with you on that part, but today's concept of art isn't the same as the one before the enlightenment period, which basically gave birth to the contemporary meaning of art, and not only that, but it also gave birth to museums and galleries, where art pieces are exhibited on their own, without external context. I do not consider NieR art only by today's standards, from which point my original comment was made. Even great masters of old didn't consider themselves artists most of the time. What I'm trying to say is that when written down, the essence and meaning of art isn't the same as it used to be when those great sculptures and paintings were made, in that regard if NieR was made in that time it would by all means be considered art by those standards. The art of that time was never meant to be exhibited in a gallery or a museum, as you said it was made to serve a purpose, but at you look at most art that was made after the great revolution (and most during), you can see that the general concept has greatly changed. In essence, art has become a work of an individual, and and extension of oneself.

    Playing through this game and completing it's main endings not only was a roller coaster of emotions, but an experience that changed my way of perceiving life. Through most of the campaign I felt full of sorrow and despair, and just like the game characters I felt (and feel) trapped, crushed by the unbearable suffering of existence. But when going through ending E, and getting taunted to give up I truly felt like I couldn't keep going, not just in the game, but in the real life, I've held that feeling of wanting to disappear for quite a while. Without spoiling ending E, when the game finally presents it's proposition of how to continue existing in a meaningless world, I couldn't hold my tears back.
    It truly has changed me and has helped me to get on my feet and keep going.

    I cannot explain how profoundly I love this game, other than saying it's probably the best I've ever played. The games with the "greatest impact" on have been Pokemon BW/BW2, Halo Reach/4, Kid Icarus Uprising, and Titanfall. Most of them were either the firsts I played, the ones I spent the most time with, or the oens that stood out to me the most, so I completely understand that many might find them lackluster sources of impact. But that should not discredit the fact that NieR: Automata so easily blew me out of the water and became my favorite game of all time.
    This game even got me interested in reading philosphy, so I can develop a greater appreciation for it. I'm also hoping to find somewhere to read about all of the NieR lore.

    In relation to the sidequests being the weakest area of the game I disagree to an extent. While the quests themselves are fairly mundane and dull, the detail and world building that they add is absolutely phenomenal. I like to think of it as the world building and conversations are the reward the game is giving you for the mundane fetch quests that you're asked to do.
    Also to clarify a common misconception. There is no YoRHa cycle, this is the first incarnation of them and it is not going to be rebuilt. The YoRHa project achieved its objective. The reason people think its a cycle is due to the game stating that the combat data collected will be utilised to create more advanced combat models. These models are not YoRHa model androids.

    Your little pointer is now surrounded by others that represent other players that deleted their saves so you could do this & each time you get hit you see a little message saying (random gamertag here)'s data has been lost.
    It just manages to hit at your very core & that's thru gameplay in some bullet hell mini game, not a cutscene like Final Fantasy X.

    This game made me cry.... 2nd one after Aerith died of FF7, but not because of death, because of the story as a whole.

    This is probably going to get lost among the sea of comments, but I recently just got the game and therefore new to the series as well as the community, and I have to say, I'm really in love with the game so far! Everything from the world, the characters, the soundtrack, and the story are nothing but beautiful, imaginative, and unique. To be honest, I've never seen a video game as remarkable and amazing as this one. And I'm really glad that despite the game being fairly old and underrated, that there are people who still play and appreciate it. Thank you so much for revisiting this game, I truly love it and is one of my favorites :)

      They're remastering it on mobile and pc. Nier replicant something something numbers. The info is mostly on Japanese so look through the comments on people who understand what is going on the video.

    This is literally my favorite game of this console generation.
    I haven't gotten so invested into any other game throughout this whole gen, I genuinely believe Yoko Taro has established himself as a genius in the gaming industry with the Nier and Drakengard franchises.
    Hopefully we see a new installment in the "DrakenNier" universe soon, because Yoko's proven that he's one of the few writer/directors left that know what they're doing.

    The main things that I care about in games are fun gameplay, smooth pacing, interesting main and side content, an impactful story, as well as good music. NieR:Automata is one of the very few games that excels in all of these areas. I hope more people play this game because it is one of the most mechanically creative games of all time, and is a true work of art.

    When I started playing this game, I got completely hooked and had a hard time putting down the controller. I ended up forcing myself to take a break because my PS4 Pro was getting too hot. After 50+ hours of gameplay and achieving all the main endings, I can confidently say this is one of the best games of the generation.
