I moved to Birmingham from Tuscaloosa 3 years ago. I saw Zach live at Avondale Brewing Company at the end of September this year, and after that I started learning to play some of his songs. At first I couldn't relate to the lyrics, but as I played sang the song, I realized that the song fits perfectly if I think of "the man I killed" as an older self, one that's afraid to take risks and pursue the things he wants. As we grow, we should realize that we're killing the dead parts of loves and making room for the new. "That boy who tried to rob me" is the younger me, the one that doesn't know what he wants. And that's what makes a great song: an ability to mean so many different things, both literal and figurative.
You have a deep and colorful soul with an amazing voice. You have an amazing gift and I hope you have a great future. May the Lord bless you and your family.
Holy shit, I never go on reddit. I was searching for advice for a new mechanical keyboard and was sent to a thread. When I hit the back button there you were. I can’t put into words how glad I am I listened to that first song. Amazing stuff man.

You Sir are an extremely amazing songwriter. There's thousands of people sitting wherever they are with whatever instrument they play who are surgically writing lyrics and complex progressions because they believe to stand out and be unique will help them get people to stop and listen and say "Ohhh I haven't heard anything like this before!" What really needs to be done is to open up your soul, dig deep and tell a story about who you are and what these experiences are like in your eyes. You don't need fancy 11b13 chords or unusual time signatures. Your words. Your PERSPECTIVE is what makes someone stand out. To write songs where you can connect with someone and they listen and they go "That's exactly it. This song speaks to me." Relatable. I'm really glad to have found you thanks to Michael Palmisano. You're incredibly talented and I wish you all the best. Cheers

LYRICS
I killed a man in Birmingham
I hit him with a tire iron
He did not move and I do not give a damn
I've been working here like a slaving mule sucking the earth a dry crew
Lookin' for a way out of it all
Cops are coming I can feel'em here
My back is crawling standing here
Wouldn't mind seein' few pigs fall
{Chorus}
So take me down to the river my blood all on the floor
Cuz' I don't know if I can carry this weight much longer anymore
Take me up the mountain on a cloud bound for the sky
Don't go praying for me cuz' tonight I'm prepared to die
I not often wonder what my tombstone would say
Would they mention any of my good or just the evil in my days
But not out there in Birmingham that boy he tried to rob me
I dint not want to but I had to show that boy the real me
[Repeat Chorus]
Ohhhh, ohhh, ohhhh, ohhh, ohhhh, ohhh, ohhhh, ohh
The dust has now settled from those boys who busted in
I am not a bad man but theres bullets in my skin
[Repeat chorus]
