11 Marines, one corpsman, and a soldier paid the ultimate sacrifice today in Afghanistan. 8/26/21. Fair winds and following seas brothers. Semper Fidelis. Really needed to come and hear this song tonight.
It never should have happened. Hats off to our heros. They knew what they were signing up for, but they should be sleeping in their beds tonight, and not the ground they were fighting for. The choice of one dictated the fate of 13, unnecessarily. God bless our troops.
On September 7, 2021, I lost my best friend and fiance to PTSD(suicide). He was a PROUD MARINE that served 2 tours giving his service & sacrifice for our country. He treated me like a queen and he was my king. I took care of everything for him. Everything was perfect. He just couldn't fight the war within anymore. We went everywhere together (even out of state because he was now a Union Millwright) This day I went to alone, returned home and he was drunk. Nothing unusual that's how he coped with the war within. I started doing dishes, he kissed me and told me how much he loved me and I told him back. He went outside to do yard work and I got a bad feeling...I went outside screaming for him....ADAM!? ADAM!? I noticed the door to our garage was open. I ran there and found him hanging. Now, he's sleeping in his dress blues. Thank you Zach Bryan for once again helping me in my grief. God Speed, brother.
"Chosen Few" ...Charlie Company 2-12 INF ..So many casualties in my unit I couldn't wear all my bracelets at once brother.. Ft Carson Colorado ..we ended the surge in Iraq ..Ramadi, Fallujah, Baghdad (Sunni Triangle), Kumar Province Afghan. I've done my time and thankfully survived with injury but I'm well alive. This song hits home for me and mine brother thanks
Coming from someone who found a bomb in the sand the wrong way, and was able to walk away from it, this ht hard.....I am forever grateful that I got to come home....and saddened for those who didn't come home....keep telling stories the way you do brother. I'm on my last tour (I hope) and your music is a staple in my daily life. I have used your music to get me through a lot over the last little bit. Don't change your style; keep telling stories; stay genuine. RLTW
Thank you for your service sir. My brother is in the Marines and I couldn't imagine life without him. I hope you're doing ok. Thank you again. Maybe you finding that mine saved anothers life.
Thank you for your service sir. i aint even american but i want to thank you for bleeding for ur country. me being from europe my family have seen alot of war back in the days from both sides and i just wish it could all end everywhere.
First Marine I ever lost was after she found out she was pregnant. I was the first one she told and I hold that conversation deep in my heart. Was the first time I ever had to put my blues on to say goodbye to a hell of a Marine and hoped it would be my last. The second Marine I lost was just 5 days before heading home. I know it hits every buddy hard but damn if it isn't a stab in the heart when you're in charge. I can't help but think what I could have done differently or why did I end up getting home when they didn't. Semper fi killers we'll feast again one day.
I listened to this song before I went to boot camp and felt something, a sort of patriotism, but Jesus what I feel now is a gut wrenching sickness. I can’t imaging losing the brothers that I have met and serve with. I thank the lord for every one of the few good men that served before me
Soldiers, Marines, sailors, and airmen live in peace in heaven man. Them boys are a lot a better off then those left behind. God bless their souls, and their willingness to fight and die for those unable to.
American Antler Hunter sorry for your loss. I experienced this as well. Coming back wasn’t easy when you knew there are others not coming back with you that you left with.

I was there Thursday night at Ford Field, too. Some kind of magic of a show, right? Jason Isbell and Zach Bryan are both pure class acts. We are privileged to bear witness to these guys, I tell ya.
Lost a great friend in September. Bunch of drunk sailors killed him. He was 23. All he wanted in life is to serve his country and make his momma proud. We met and bootcamp and served for 2 years before it happened. It’s fucked me up for life. Watching my best friend fall 10 stories to his death with no way to help him. This song seems so perfect. Thank you Zach you have helped me through more times than you can even imagine.
I like Jason, he's amazing. I gotta tell you brother, you nailed this one. I felt it more when listening to you sing it. I lost it at 30 seconds and cried the whole song. Thank you for this.
Zach, i lost my best friend , a retired senior nco recently. This song takes it straight to the heart, especially coming from you on this version. Forever grateful, warrant officer szabo
I know Isbell wrote this about a guy from his high school so it’s somewhat personal but Zach being a serviceman adds to the vulnerable honesty that this song is about. I’m a huge JB fan but I’d be overjoyed if Zach ever got to record and cut this song, especially if it was a simple cut like this.
I’m a huge Isbell fan and I’m not gonna lie I like this version better. I think the rawness of this recording suits the song perfectly. Keep it up man you’re gonna do great things
Al Smith I too am a huge Isbell fan. I’m not ready to say this is better than the original, just glad to see Jason’s songs being introduced to a whole new audience so they can experience the greatest songwriting of this generation.
Might not be the smartest idea, brother. Military ain't like it used to be. And we ain't exactly been fighting on the side of the good guys for a long time. If there was even such a thing.
Damn I can’t stop listening to this song it brings back memories of losing so many great friends all five of my great friends made the greatest sacrifice what I wouldn’t give to talk to them again until Valhalla boys I’ll be there in time
Never ever did I think I would like another version better than Jason's. I am huge huge ISBELL fan but I gotta say...I like this better. I love the emotion in your voice. Very raw very real . Good job

Thank you for your service and also the dedication to your music. Both are helping people in ways you’ll never know. Keep up the excellent work. Much love from the Pacific Northwest.
It pisses me off that I can only hit the thumbs up button one time for this song. This is absolutely amazing and words cannot express what this means to someone who has earned his dress blues. Thank you sir for covering this song and doing such an amazing job. The purity and the way that we as listeners can tell that you mean every word that you sing and that it comes from the heart speaks volumes. Thank you.
Just when I thought your songwriting sounded similar to Jason Isbell, I discover your amazing cover of "Dress Blues"! I definitely think you and Jason should get together, I think it would be amazing.
Wow, I am not in service but I thank God for the sacrifice you incredible men and women make for our freedom! Song brought me to tears imagining what it must be like.

I was just listening and then it hit me what this is about. I still miss you John and Randy, best friends always, but you were always brothers first. Semper Amicis, Semper Fratres, Semper Fidelis.
A long time ago I saw his song “heading south” and I knew this guy was destined to become someone and I know he will be this is only the beginning of a very promising career. Take care man I loved the cover.
Ive been listening for a little over a year now and your voice still gives me goosebumps every time i hear it best singer of this century if i had to name one
He changed the arrangement and omitted some lines. Seems some here think it’s because he didn’t really know the song, but you may notice that he left out some of the most personal lines that Isbell wrote directly to his friend. Maybe Zach just didn’t want to sing those lyrics out of respect to the writer.
I’m a 20 year old marine, infantryman. Been in for a year now, now that the war is dying off, I feel a bit of guilt not being able to serve before with those men that gave all, cause I was underage. I will always, always respect those who gave all.. because all give some, but only some, give all. This song truly touched me.
Don't let that guilt eat you up brother, take it from a 40+ yr old ex grunt that got out in 98 right before all the shit went down, that false guilt will ruin your life , it has mine, be proud you had balls enough to wear that EGA and that's all you can do.
I know its been a while since these post were initially posted. Hope this message finds you well. Take the positive out of what you felt. That is what makes Marines special. I got the opportunity to fight, and then my following deployments were non combat. That feeling will never leave you, and that is a good thing. It means you truly are a Marine. I did 10 years and was medically retired. The struggle is always there and what I miss the most is that regardless of who you are, Marines never leave a Marine behind. Be proud brother, theres always a battle to fight even if there is not a war. Our nation needs Marines more than ever. And there is a the largest generation who fought the longest war in history all searching for something right now. I lost more Marines to their own hands now than we did on our Afghan deployment. Be proud, talk about it, and put one boot in front of the next and repeat. I have so much to be grateful for yet when I close my eyes I still am a Lcpl, waiting to step on patrol, running my fingers through the hot moondust. I have lived with survivors guilt and it has nearly taken me a few times. I take from that a lesson to never back down, never hesitate to do the next right thing, and maintain the willingness to risk it all for another human. Semper Fidelis Marine.
I was with 2/3 and we relieved 1/3 there was a marine from 1/3 that was killed during transition a week before they were sent home. We ended up becoming combat ineffective within 3 months and 2/4 came to back us up. We lost 23 marines 2/4 lost 12 and there was females that were in the lioness program to help us out at checkpoints searching females and the 5th female in the Iraq war was killed clp Jennifer Parcel. Anyways this song hits hard I’m a huge fan of this guy awesome job he’s going somewhere!
Rest In Peace Charlie Ida, We'll hold the line brother. Thank you for everything you taught me brother. Marine, Deputy, Father, Brother, Son, Mentor, HERO.
I've been a huge fan of Jason Isbell for a few years now, and I absolutely love this song. You did an amazing job covering it! I got goosebumps from the sheer emotion of it.
What can you see from your window? I can't see anythin' from mine Flags on the side of the highway And scripture on grocery store signs Maybe eighteen was too early Maybe thirty or forty is too Did you get your chance to make peace with the man Before He sent down his angels for you? Mamas and grand mamas love you 'Cause that's all they know how to do You never planned on the bombs in the sand Or sleepin' in your dress blues Your wife said this all would be funny When you got back home in a week Turn twenty two and we'd celebrate you In a bar or a tent by the creek Your baby would just about be here And your very last tour would be up But you won't be back, they're all dressin' in black Drinkin' sweet tea in Styrofoam cups Mamas and grand mamas love you Cause that's all they know how to do. You never planned on the bombs in the sand Or sleepin' in your dress blues The high school gymnasium's ready Full of flowers and old Legionnaires Nobody showed up to protest Just sniffle and stare There's red, white and blue in the rafters And there's silent old men from the Corps What did they say when they shipped you away To fight somebody's Hollywood war? Nobody here could forget you You showed us what we had to lose You never planned on the bombs in the sand Or sleepin' in your dress blues You never planned on the bombs in the sand Or sleepin' in your dress blues
Rip to the ones that lost there lives . Your not forget. Thank you for your service. That's a very week saying. For what you missed out on. And your family lost.
Most people won’t remember cause the national news didn’t cover it but It but it was Pensacola December 6th 2019 I was brand new fresh out of boot and a Saudi officer radicalized killed three sailors in a bloody shooting this song helped me through it I felt guilty for surviving I felt guilty for hiding I felt guilty for not giving my own life in the end there was nothing I could do I was defenseless there was nothing I could do to change the outcome but this song helped me those dark days when chaps said to just keep my head up God bless you Zach brother I’ve been in San Diego for awhile now I’ve got tickets to see ya on Veterans Day 2022 with my brothers that scream your songs from the smoke pit I hope you perform this cover take care

This kid doesnt miss. Been a long time since we've had a song writer so talented.
This is an insanely beautiful version of this song
Can't control the tears running down my face when I listen to this
I’m mostly impressed that he could sing that whole song without breaking down in tears.
I've been a huge fan of Jason Isbell for a few years now, and I absolutely love this song. You did an amazing job covering it! I got goosebumps from the sheer emotion of it.
Sitting by a fire picking and singing thank you for keeping what real music is about alive!!
Damn this song hits way too hard. RIP SGT. Keith Kline. Sleep well brother.
One of my absolute favorites brother
Beautiful and somber. Thank all our service men and women for the sacrifices they made/make!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Would love to hear Zach cover Isbell's Cover Me Up
My favorite Isabell song covered by Zach. Amazing
What can you see from your window?
I can't see anythin' from mine
Flags on the side of the highway
And scripture on grocery store signs
Maybe eighteen was too early
Maybe thirty or forty is too
Did you get your chance to make peace with the man
Before He sent down his angels for you?
Mamas and grand mamas love you
'Cause that's all they know how to do
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues
Your wife said this all would be funny
When you got back home in a week
Turn twenty two and we'd celebrate you
In a bar or a tent by the creek
Your baby would just about be here
And your very last tour would be up
But you won't be back, they're all dressin' in black
Drinkin' sweet tea in Styrofoam cups
Mamas and grand mamas love you
Cause that's all they know how to do.
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues
The high school gymnasium's ready
Full of flowers and old Legionnaires
Nobody showed up to protest
Just sniffle and stare
There's red, white and blue in the rafters
And there's silent old men from the Corps
What did they say when they shipped you away
To fight somebody's Hollywood war?
Nobody here could forget you
You showed us what we had to lose
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues
You never planned on the bombs in the sand
Or sleepin' in your dress blues
