While visiting Mayne Island, I deliver the longest landscape photography tutorial you've seen in ages! Covering composition, focus stacking, and even revisiting the same location twice, this photography tutorial shows you my entire thought process when composing a shot.
Not only do we have arguing seagulls that clearly have relationship issues but we have sea otters (the cats of the ocean) and a wonderful night in the truck camper of destiny.
In all honesty, I've been struggling with a recent losing streak. After a multitude of failed shoots I've decided to stop trying so hard and have fun with my landscape photography instead. That's not as easy as it sounds.
Will the sunset deliver the goods or will we have to stick around for sunrise? Will Amanda get to see her whales or will I continue to be the largest leviathan she's ever clapped eyes on?

As some one who spent many years alone in wild mountains with a camera and a backpack and then found a wonderful partner to share my love for photography with, I am so happy for you and Amanda.

That shot with the moon looks gorgeous
At least Canada drives on the right side of the road. Heaton has to drive on the left side. In New Mexico we drive on what's left of the road.

I saw heaps of whales on the ferry to Alaska, plus some epic epic light. Those landscapes you pass with no roads for miles are something special.
You're video's are so fun to watch and always have ideas and tips. I always struggle with compositions but man you've hot a gift for it! You Said that there were no epic shots for a while now but he that second shot with the moon in it is absutely briljant! Grt guido

Yeah Gavin enjoy what you get to witness while you are photographing landscapes. You could have to go into hospital laboratories everyday like I have to and only get out on the weekends. Btw most laboratories are windowless 😕.

Yes, enjoy the journey! Gorgeous sunrise shots but I also loved the first rock images despite the light. The way you worked at getting the composition made me appreciate them even more. This really made me long for the borders to open up since I am nearby in Washington State and love BC. Fun production!

What a nice treat to explore Mayne Is, Gavin! You have so many neat places to photograph near where you live. I like the image from the first day, gray clouds, smooth water, great rock foreground. But the real payoff was the next morning. What a beautiful mauve sky and you found a good composition. And the image with the shooting right into the sun was great too. I really liked the little jam/jelly house. What a great idea. wish we had some around here. I am so glad you pointed out the importance of having fun with photography. We all could use the reminder.

I stayed in Vienna for most of last year and they have Gladiola fields with the same 'honesty' system as your Jam Stalls. The prices weren't any cheaper than the shops though so from what I saw people just gave what they felt they could afford. That's what I did too. I doubt the grower was disappointed!
As I just ordered your book, I really, really hope a signed copy gets sent by mistake! $35 for shipping is cray, cray as you young people say! Having watched all your videos, buying a limited edition book is the least I can do! Cheers!

Nice to know that I am not the only one who uses the level indicator in the camera and then often has to 'tweak' the rotation in photo editing so that the image is visually level.
Love it, perfect - giggles in all the right places. And not sure why you don't like sunstar shots, Gavin - the way the sun kissed the rocks was fabulous. Best part - Chasing Awe does fit in my bag - can't wait to get my copy.

I liked the seagull bit about the keys. Reminds me of when I went to Norfolk England photographing waves. One big wave came in and I ran backwards not realising I had dropped aa car key out of my pocket. Luckily we had the spare key with us. It cost us £150 for a replacement.

I visited mayne years ago, before any serious photography ability was even considered (!), beautiful place. I can recommend kayaking around it. It's small enough to do pretty easily.
Also if I recall there are crazy tides between some of the small islands creating some cool whirlpools which could be interesting, awesome part of the world with so much to explore 👍

You should feature a bag designed to hold Chasing Awe as well as gear. A lot of the rocks look like skulls, and the sea gulls sound like clarence!
