And they always find the cheapest clapped out FG on marketplace for 15K and say “SEE you can still get them that cheap!” While ignoring that it’s literally the only one that’s under 20K.
Or for similar money start with an NA and put a built motor in it, the price difference is pretty similar to the cost of a built motor, and if you want lots of power you have to replace most of the factory turbo parts anyway
To be honest I have a turbo (retirement prezzy from the missus) and an NA. The turbo is stock, won’t touch it, whereas the NA daily is my toy, happy to modify it as it’s worth stuff all. Everybody has a different view or opinion, regardless it’s great seeing a community young and old keeping these Aussie icons on the road. Great video, learnt a lot and thanks.
Cost wise it makes sense to start with NA if you want bulk power. I spent similar money on my factory turbo, I bought all the stuff you bought except for things like the map sensor, fuel rail, manifolds etc. so really if you want power you're spending like $1500 more to start with an NA than it would cost to do the mods with a turbo that costs a lot more than $1500 more to buy.. The big difference though is you do have a stronger engine and trans with a turbo. if you want more than like 500kw though there is no reason to start with a turbo because you need to replace damn near every factory component at that point.
Exactly this. Almost every big HP build you see started as an NA because it’s so much cheaper than spending 20K on a car that’s going to get stripped down and rebuilt anyway.
Another option to turbo is to buy one off auctions wrecked. Cost me 7500 plus 750 to get it shipped over. Was a black xr50 turbo. The car was stolen and not a lot of damage so didn’t wreck it but if I was to could have easily made a decent amount back.
Just curious. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy a XR6T engine which would come with the a lot of the things you had to do to the NA and fit it? I am thinking about doing either what you did or doing the turbo engine conversion.

There is a 3rd option, buy an already completed NA+T. They are worth less than factory turbo cars. So you might find thats the least expensive way to do it.
ahahah great to be featured at the start. Lovely! Great video once again. also off topic a bit, but have you been hitting the gym? You're looking a bit swole dude.
I have a na xr50 that I love and want to +t it so bad. I can afford parts of the 15k ish price tag but to get some1 to install it is what's holding me back. I have very limited mechanical knowledge and would def need the assistance. How much did the install cost u in Townsville?
I have to totally disagree. A N/A turbocharged car will not sell for anywhere near a XR6T in year's to come. So to say spending 17k on transforming a N/A into a turbo is better financially then buying a xr6t is incorrect. In 10+ year's I can assure you that the xr6t will be worth at least double to what it is today. In 20 years the sky is the limit. In fact a totally stock xr6t particularly in manual, will be worth crazy money.
Great stuff as always Mr fg mods . If u add the cost of the car which is total cost of the build . Car is a massive part of the build . 😉 . U can have my XR50T for 20k .
Try paying an actual performance engine builder to build the engine with the conversion and let me know. Yes definitely cheaper if you can do everything yourself but if you can't you could easily add thousands of dollars labour cost to it.
$17,000? Absurd. Should have just bought a turbo engine for $4000 online, along with a few parts. Also, imagine paying all that cash for a ZF conversion and putting in the wrong ZF. Keep alert!
Just buy a turbo motor and a few parts? The “few parts” being literally everything needed to convert the car from NA to Turbo 😂 Is the turbo ZF not good enough for you?
@@fgmods Great that you finally have the car set up with the turbo and all, but you could have sold the NA for $10,000 then bought a turbo for $20,000, which is $7,000 less than you spent to have a non genuine turbo FG to begin with. I dislike the idea of selling an NA to get a turbo, instead of turning it into a turbo generally, as it is very cheap to turbo an N/A Falcon. But at the price you paid, it seemingly would have been a good idea. I've done this mod on 3 Falcon's so far - BF 2 to FG series 1. You buy a $400 gt3582 turbo and intercooler kit from Ebay, exhaust manifold from wreck yard or online for $600 or so, etc, etc. Set it to 6psi, Good for 250kw at the fly, safe for an NA setup with 5 gears, and even more power with the ZF NA and Turbo/V8 six speed. Exhaust setups are bought cheap too online, and everywhere, wastegates are cheap, and so on. Total cost of under $2500 with tuning each time, using the stock BTR 4 speed, 5 speed mustang gear box, and the N/A ZF. Now, you've spent $17,000 - That's absurd - and it isn't even a genuine thingo, or a whatsamajigga. That cash would have been better spent elsewhere is my whole point. Again, great that you have the car, but you seemingly ripped yourself off. For example, Holden's are ugly, but a VE SS is being sold for $12-$20,000 online, and is already quicker and stronger in stock form than the FG turbo. Had you of bought one of them for $14k and spent $3k on mods, it would absolutely fly. Should be more clever with the cash, $17,000 is an absurd amount to pay/spend to turbo these cars. Should be under $5000 absolute max in all cases, especially for the amount of power you are happy with. Of course you'd start with the strongest version of the car you could to begin with - not go through a conversion of gearboxes and so on which is just wasted cash in the end, added to the cost of turboing the FG. You could also do a backyard job, just strap the turbo on and run a safe 5psi to get about 240kw at the fly. Engine ECU will compensate, car should run fairly decent without a tune. Best to get a tune though. If you find a spare grand lying around, buy a ratty BA Falcon and try it out. If it blows up, whatever. If it doesn't, you've got a baseline! That said, keep up the good work. I enjoy your content. Peace.
A mixture of doing it myself and help from friends. You can see all the work the guys at Elite did in the turbo conversion video. Other than the stuff in the engine, it’s all quite simple and I think the average car person could do it themselves and save a lot on labour costs.
Doesn’t make much sense to include the cost of the car when I already own the car and have for many years. This is about turbocharging a car you already own. Not going out and buying a car THEN turbocharging it.
