Two guys in their early twenties, a hitchiking Dutch student and a Swedish police officer with a broken police car meet each other on a Swedish country road. On their way to the gas station, their suspicious understanding gradually changes.
Jag är Polisen tells a subtly stylized story about the short-lived gathering of two unacquainted loners. An ambivalent narrative about openness and empathy versus the equal condemnation of behavior that we can not immediately place.
The film is written and directed by Marco van Bergen, who became world renown with his gay themed short films WATER VATTNET and WASTELANDS.

This film is riveting because so much is not spoken. The student sees the vulnerability of the young 'policeman' and he rises to the occasion with maturity and consideration. Swedish and Dutch communicating in a language which belongs to neither and they do bond. So many short films are made with artistry that is praiseworthy.

A wonderful tale about closeness and connection, in a world of suspicion and mistrust. And the best part: "you were smoking weed" subtly constructs the bridge!
Subtitles are necessary. Both boys are fine actors, but all blond young man is beautiful beyond description. The full meaning of the story completely escaped me.
Hi! Text limits the essence of what is happening. I’ve decided not to subtitle the Swedish parts as the hitchhiker does not understand that language and he has to understand the situations by watching what is happening: the guy teasing him, not being able to pay… instead of listening to the situations you and he watch the situation. It’s a way of filmmaking we are unfortunately not used to a lot anymore today, with Marvel and such being big players. I invite you to watch the film again, and see if you can decipher the meaning from what happens on screen. I think you can!

The film, for me, is an ambivalent telling about openness and empathy opposed to the immediate judgement of behaviour that we don’t immediately understand. Without talking to each other much, both boys connect with, and help each other because they do not immediately jump to conclusions about each other. It’s about looking closer, seeing what’s under the hood (as made visible at the ending of the film) and understanding how to help each other.

I don't know if I got it right, but it seems to me like the "policeman" is just a nice-townie-guy with some "mental issues". Every small town has one of them, whom makes no harm so people just let them be. That's what I infere at least, judging from other people's interaction with him: (1) The old lady's nice behavior; (2) The real policeman's observant but neutral behavior; and (3) The young man's not-so-nice behavior.
I might be absolutely wrong, but I don't see the "gay thing" that some of you are pointing out in the comments. I see something even bigger and transversal, such as: to get rid of prejudgements; the importance of company and understanding; kindness to one another.
I might be right or wrong. However, I had a great time watching it. Awesome work!

Very good short film! Two men who don't know each other's native language use English to communicate. I am Italian, but it sounded as if they both spoke with American accents. Very nicely done indeed!

Excellent short. The Volvo driver looked too small / slightly built to be a police officer, which was the first clue.
It's the dude from "Water" an LGBT short. He's cute. (Subtitles were a joke. They didn't even come on when they didn't speak English)

You clearly need more life experience if you cannot understand what is happening in this film even if you turn off the sound.
Mr van Bergen certainly has an eye for attractive young blond males. This little film features two with a third appearing briefly as eye candy though I can't work out why he was aggressive towards the young cop then stopped when more senior police enter. The story itself doesn't amount to much; it's more in the telling of it that keeps one attention. The most impressive aspect of this short film for me was the orchestral score which suited the action perfectly.

As for the movie, you have to watch it closely to get the clue what's going on. Well, it seems, as long as you don't cause much trouble, even if you're different people will always look you in the good side. Sweden is indeed one of the best places to live to.
The Volvo 240 was the real star of the show.

Best guess: the young swede is not a cop, has stolen the police car and is on the run (someone known to him appears in the shop, they recognize each other, but what they say here is unknown). The hiker obviously knows more about cars, begins to realize that the "policeman" is a fake on the run, but goes along just for the sake of getting a ride. Still, the words would have made this much clearer. I hope that is close enough; please let me know.
Hi Joe, Thanks for taking the time! Young Swede indeed is not a cop. He's a police enthusiast. That's why he's wearing an old uniform and old police car (contrasted to the real police standing outside the gas station in their modern uniforms and with their modern car). The lady in the shop is nice to him as she knows him and his 'hobby', but the boy with the helmet teases him with it. The hiker picks up these signals and grows sorry for him (buying the fluids) and kind of grows fond of him. Hope this helps!

It’s a good film, though possibly misclassified as gay. However, it doesn’t need to be gay. It’s good as it is. @marcovanbergen does a great job of capturing that landscape and the quiet interactions between characters. There’s definitely a subtle attraction but it doesn’t go any farther- these characters already have other things going on in their lives. It’s good because it raises questions and doesn’t give all of the answers. I do wish you would consider subtitles when English is not spoken; I would have liked to know what the store clerk was saying. Her part is important, too. Keep making films!

I will consider adding closed captions for the Swedish parts; but the ‘goal’ of not adding them was to hopefully convey their emotions beyond the spoken language: try to challenge the viewer to read their expressions rather than the spoken sentences.
I made another film “South of Heaven” after this one and I’m currently writing two scripts, so I’m trying to keep busy next to my day job :)

Sweet film: a wanna-be policeman who gets caught in his faking it by the hitchhiker who rescues him from an embarrassing situation at the gas station and stays with him to get the kid’s car running. Then the hitchhiker continues to be sympathetic by complimenting the kid on his Volvo and the two young men ride off together toward Gothenburg.

I don't understand this story. Is the cop actually just some kid who either stole a decommissioned police car or is pretending to be a police officer? Why did he have to hide his identity around real cops, especially since the Volvo breakdown wasn't his fault?

I do not think so the whole scenario is matching the real life. I mean the abnormal behavior of police officer who got a problem with his car. Second thing, it is not a shame when have gay face or have experienced gay behavior before many years. It is not true, gay will give you hard time in order to get help from him or get some information. Usually , gay hate gay not support , because each one of them like to trap the other not to rescue him. I like the skin look of the student who walk long distance , it was really very attractive. Thanks, wishing to have many gays from cold snowy countries.

@@MarcovanBergen didn't totally get the plot of the film but it's properly relatable , beating on a redblock soon overheats and don't get me started on running costs 😅, nice to see it made sense with what they were doing rather then typically oh no it broke down insert poking and it magically works again.
