I first heard Jeff Beck when I was 15 years old and insane in 1965 and he has never, ever ceased to amaze me in his innovations. Speaking across generations in a way no-one in history has, or I daresay could, since he has yet to stop! He has a great synergy with Vinnie Colaiuta who is perhaps one of the few people who can match his innovation.
Interesting to listen to JB now and hear all the players that came after him and are so influenced by his sound. One of a kind. Also, I like Jeff because it's not always just the Jeff Beck show. The other instruments play a vital role in his compositions. Great stuff.
love Jeff and Vinnie on this. VC, perfect drummer for this tune. very MVO and FZ in form and feel. just love seeing this fine performance again. cheers!
Oh man that was just too cool!!! That takes me back to the day. Ok, so now I need to get my "Blow by blow " cd to play in the car today. Thanx for posting!!!
I've seen J Mac several times but my favorite was late 80's at a tiny venue in Ft Worth called Caravan Of Dreams. Maybe 150-200 people at the most. Jonas Helborg was on bass and Trilok Gurtu on percussion and anything else that could make a sound. We were about 15-20 ft from the stage. I distinctly remember their version of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat." It was awesome. Went backstage for a while, drank some Heini's, talked, autographs etc. Great memories of a great show!! {B>)
Charles Mingus' original 'Porkpie' was elegant, deeply emotional and beautiful on it's own. But to hear Beck's yearning, melancholic version brought it forward in proper spirit.
@cranie4 He ran to the amp to get a plecturm / pick to start, but then drops it later. He goes back to the amp at 3:38 for another plectrum for the ending. On Jeff's amps are usually:- A towel Plectrums Glass slides A cup of Tea Talcum powder
A reporter once asked Miles Davis if he had one person he would have like to play with who would it be? The answer:JIMI HENDRIX on Machine Gun.Satch one of the greatest technician, musicianship:so so. Clapton good licks ,good sound but in the second half of the top ten.Eddy...took it where Hendrix left it ,massive sound (in those days) different technic, speed, creativity. All of this within a std rock and roll structure.Beck 's got all of the above plus musicianship,a musician's musician.
Watching this i felt like ok this is gonna be smooth the Vinnie goes super Saiyan and my eyes roll back in my head and my spine slides out my ass from excitement.
I really personally think that Jeff Beck should be no.1 i used to not believe in lists but he really is just the greatest cos everyone sounds the same but he truely sounds way above everyone hes of the greats whos taken influence from hendrix but didnt abuse it where he sounds like him like alot of hendrix jr's *ahem* john mayer *ahem* Stevie ray vaughn *ahem* as well as being influenced by jazz and fusion like the mahavishnu orhcestra. Hes just in a class by himself and no one comes close.
I still have my Blow By Blow album I bought nearly 40 yrs ago. Well, I have the cover and sleeve but the vinyl is so thin it's nearly gone:>) I got to where I could play all the guiter riffs and bass lines and some of the drums (no keys at the time) but this song was the hardest to learn on guitar. I saw Jeff in '75 with John Maclaughlin encore with this song, going faster+faster when Beck finally threw in the towel and said "ladies and gentleman, the master of guitar MR John Maclaughlin".
For those who think this is all just a note-heavy, self-indulgent wank, and who haven't taken a music appreciation course: Look up "text painting." Simply put, it's "the musical technique of writing music which reflects the literal meaning of a song." (See Wikipedia, "Word Painting") This tune is absolutely a musical reflection of the title. It's not about showing off technique; it's technique being used to serve the spirit of the music.
yo if this played in the elevator i would ride that thing all day this guy is amazing and if anyone else say different lets see you get up there and do this
Of course, it might seem like I've contradicted myself a bit; the definition of "text painting" implies that the music is being written to match a literary form, but the term CAN be used in the reverse process and not lose all meaning. In any case, I would guess that when the mucial idea came to him, the title suggested itself.
good one.... Of course he was the typical instrumental musician and joined some band that had a vocalist,,,,,,,, and then he got famous enough he didn't have to have a vocalist in the band..The best thing about Jeff is he hires females to drive his audience crazy because they think they are better than his female bassist? LOL
@cestnoir: In case it helps your enjoyment, please know that '70's Fusion & Prog rock played around with compositional forms trying to test the boundaries of what "works together and compliments" (not that it always worked out). This song is compositionally tame compared to contemporary stuff like RTF/Medieval Overture, Jan Hammer/Magical Dog, most cuts by Yes. -- many themes, heavy gear shifting. Also, maybe check the Blow-by-blow original?
a bit fast in the beginning, it just shows that Jeff never tries to play things exactly like the record. In that way he is jazz. I have loved this guys playing since I heard a 45 that had on the flip side I'M Not Talking. It will be a sad day when he puts down the guitar. Thanks Jeff for the many exciting albums/cassettes/CD's and I guess digital stuff too.
Never could get his licks exactly down how I'd like. But I did see John MacLaughlin open up for Weather Report late 70s at Masonic in Detroit...smaller venue / awesome show. Both he & Beck are guitar gods imho.
and Beck is still coller then any of them. and can also draw an audience. I spent around 5000 houres practicing my guitar, and I'm still young. with that much time I could have finished any game twice. your fighting a lost cause. guitar is some thing you devote your life to. guitar hero is a game. your better of reading a book.
Everybody repeats themselves. Listeners have zero tolerance for zero-repetition players. Beck is one of the few who really stand out as original, and continues to improve and further develop an already phenominal style. Perhaps it's your listening ability that's worn out; not Becks riffs. I for one, will keep enjoying the "same old" brilliant phrasing, and rich tones that he produces like only he can.
Its only logical that a plastic toy with 5 buttons and one strummer would be easyer to use the a heavy wooden instrument with 132 "buttons" and 6 strummers who can, unlike the toy, produce wrong notes and interact with each other in every posible way. It would take between a day to a month to complete Guitar hero
Imagine that! A show wich is just about Guitar-battles with all the great Guitarists in it! We would have duels like Jeff Beck vs. Jimmy Page That would be rly cool
@chrisheyes66 In other videos (look for What Mama Said with Jennifer Batten) you can see Jeff using a metal slide. Then again, that was 1999, this was 2006. :)
ギター・インストの魅力のみでこんなにも長い間トップを走り続けるなんて、彼以外には考えられないですね。言葉よりも雄弁に語るギターの音色が素晴らしすぎます。
I love it how alot of his songs don't have words. Instead he uses his guitar as his voice. It's truely music genius at work.
Vinny Calaiuta is so amazing. Spot on tempo with some of the sickest fills I've ever heard!!
Damn R.I.P - still one of the best concerts i ever saw
Same here. It was a bucket list item for me, and sadly he passed 3 months later. 😢

No words now. I can't speak. It is so perfect in every way
Interesting to listen to JB now and hear all the players that came after him and are so influenced by his sound. One of a kind. Also, I like Jeff because it's not always just the Jeff Beck show. The other instruments play a vital role in his compositions. Great stuff.
アップして頂いて、有難うございます♪ Jeff Beck,Great!っていうしかないですね。
It's been said that when it comes to guitar,"there's the rest of us,and then there's Jeff Beck" This proves that....
Vinnie is a BEAST
love Jeff and Vinnie on this.

2:52 aaaahhhhh love me some Keyboard fusion. Such a bliss
Oh my god, THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG!!!!
Beck is brilliant, but credit his band members that give him the platform to pull off his genius
saw him live his playing is insane
These people are super talented at their instruments. This song was a beast on Guitar hero 5.

The best guitar tones of the world
jeez he's aged so well, better than most musicians you see today who were around back in the 60s
he is the best!

Duuude, what the frig? Top HAT.
Watching this i felt like ok this is gonna be smooth the Vinnie goes super Saiyan and my eyes roll back in my head and my spine slides out my ass from excitement.
this is awesome video taping
誰が名付けたか世界三大ギタリストのJEFF BECK
もう名前からしてカッコいい!
damn i love how Colaiuta can do anything and still keep a nice rhythm...
Always brilliant - Jeff Beck
I really personally think that Jeff Beck should be no.1 i used to not believe in lists but he really is just the greatest cos everyone sounds the same but he truely sounds way above everyone hes of the greats whos taken influence from hendrix but didnt abuse it where he sounds like him like alot of hendrix jr's *ahem* john mayer *ahem* Stevie ray vaughn *ahem* as well as being influenced by jazz and fusion like the mahavishnu orhcestra. and blues. Don't forget the blues
Well my brains officially been scattered!
Insane.
he's fortunate he didn't get too well known...still alive I hope
good one.... Yeah, got it. Fortunate he wasn't with Buddy Holly and SRV on their last flights. Isn't the "comment" section wonderful?
Jeff is ON THE CLOCK! Punched in, taking care of business!!!
Oh my godness, the keyboarder also has brilliant skills :D
This song is something you can dance to in a speedo

Such a goofy, fun song. Great listen imo.
lol, love playing this song on gh5 X)
☆COOL☆
@sheartrigger8 Haha! No doubt! When I saw him a couple of months ago, the place was going nuts!
WHOOOOOO!!!!!
I think its fair to say that some things in Beck style are things that Vai or Yngwie would have a hard time accomplishig though
and Beck is still coller then any of them. and can also draw an audience.
I spent around 5000 houres practicing my guitar, and I'm still young.
with that much time I could have finished any game twice.
your fighting a lost cause.
guitar is some thing you devote your life to.
guitar hero is a game. your better of reading a book.
i agree. the music is chaotic to show he is ''scatterbrained.''
its really not random at all
Everybody repeats themselves. Listeners have zero tolerance for zero-repetition players. Perhaps it's your listening ability that's worn out; not Becks riffs. I for one, will keep enjoying the "same old" brilliant phrasing, and rich tones that he produces like only he can.
@cestnoir that is the point of the song if you dident notice its called scatterbrain
Jeff Beck came to my city a few weeks ago. Tickets were way too expensive and sold out quickly D=
Its funny how worked up people get about peoples opinions.
Damn people and their wrong opinions
Great song
there are so many great guitarists that there is no way to rank them
wow! :)
Imagine that! A show wich is just about Guitar-battles with all the great Guitarists in it! We would have duels like Jeff Beck vs. Jimmy Page
That would be rly cool
Drums are f*ing sick 0.0
@chrisheyes66 In other videos (look for What Mama Said with Jennifer Batten) you can see Jeff using a metal slide. Then again, that was 1999, this was 2006. :)
wowowowowow!!! :)
you cant argue with fact
Admiral Adama on drums !
Dude. Read desc. He's Vinnie Colaiuta. And he is damn amazing.
That drummer fucking kicks ass!!!!!!
