I really agree with the importance of losing. As someone who spam played MOBAs like League and Dota (ended up getting very high rank in league at one point), winning did not feel impactful at all to skill improvement. One thing that sucks about MOBAs as well and the huge advantage we have with RTS is that every loss is YOUR fault. There is no question marks like in MOBAs, there is no uncertainty, the only reason you lost was because of YOU. This means that improving in RTS is so much easier because its very easy to see what you specifically did wrong, whereas in team games like MOBAs or FPS it is sometimes hard to know exactly how impactful your mistakes were to the loss and how impactful your teammates mistakes were to the loss.
In RTS we are blessed with knowing that it is always 100% your own fault (unless you RNG cope)
Well said!
But...but... my oppo had much better 2nd hunt and goldmine spawn than me
If i got the same surely i would win, if only you were there to see it!!!!
And this is why I get so pissed when during the red bull tournament, that competitors would surrender as soon as their chances of wining fell below 40% . I saw it to often and it was irritating
It is a tournament and you need to conserve your conserve your energy for matches that can be won rather than waste it on matches already lost
Here it is just a casual match and he played it out just for practice and learning and for his viewers
Having the Discord is such a great idea! See you there
Great video. So much to learn. Love how you adapted, leveraging the threat of raiding in combination with the defensive prowess for greed seems really smart. Gonna try this out for sure! 🎉
Really loving these daily uploads, you are killing it! You're the best AOM youtuber/streamer and it isn't even close! You seriously make the best videos, from analysis, to mindset, to pure mechanics, your advice is super useful man, keep doing your thing!
Thanks man!
+1 for keeping aoe3 intro
Going strong let's go!
Have you ever felt that any regular human units were just useless? Like no matter what enemy you faced, there would always be a better alternative? Like for the Egyptians, their endgame feels heavily centered around their Migdol units and the barracks units never seem to see any play, at most a temporary transition period.
It depends a bit, some unique techs really make human units really viable, for example Horus spears are pretty insane
I just hate people treating this game as chess and not seeing it through to the end. Imagine watching a game but the ending gets cut...
I hear ya
I view rts games as simultaneous exhibition (basically playing on 5 chess boards at once)
And well, you win if you win on 3/5 boards
People often quit when they are losing 2/0 or 2/1 and game is far from over
So even in chess it can apply
I think so far people were just destroying Atlanteans everytime with early game rush so they haven't yet fully realized how OP their regular units are
They seem to have all the best units and all the best counter units (which can also all become heroes)
I haven't seen anyone be able to deal with Atlantean armies lategame and i expect them to be nerfed soon. At the same time their myth units need to be buffed a bit
Agreed
Playing mainly as Gaia Myself, I have to agree! In lategame the greeks might have the better raw units overall, but the atlanteans have counters to everything
I've been playing a fast heroic BO recently as Gaia (I finish age up to heroic at 6:45) and that basically gives Me access to Arcus + contarius + destroyer almost "as if" they were classical age units. It's usually so early in the game it's often not possible to put Me under enough pressure to delay My age up significantly 🤔
Age 2 atlanteans are pretty weak (to an extent) because they have few options of units, but by the time they hit heroic and especially mythic, there's a unit AND a counter unit for everything, which means it's much more raw numbers to beat late game atlanteans and less so good choices/micro (to an extent)
It's a learning experience!
Great video as usual. Really like your gameplay and explanation. Keep working on commenting while you play and you will get better. Its a skill, you just get better as you do. For example Hera or Viper in aoe2 who are top level players consistently can talk and play at a very high level. Ofcourse when it gets hectic they will focus on the game/get in zone and you wont hear them but its just more natural for them to just focus more on game and less on talking in those moments. Anyhow keep it up! Love your content.
Hey Magic, love your stuff! I was wondering, would you be able to make a guide on research/tech if it's not too arcane (by arcane I mean something you can't necessarily explain super well, but have to kind of get a feel for by playing- things that are difficult to teach or kind of "unteachable")? One of the things I find hard is knowing what upgrades are worth getting and when to get them- I feel like there are some obvious ones, like getting Plow before/as you transition to farms, or hitting Pickaxe/Handaxe when aging up, etc. but then there are some that seem a bit more arcane, like Divine Blood or Militia or Levy (Unit).
hey I was planning on doing it for the eco ups! perhaps next week we can do it, after that we can start going over the other more unique ones slowly
@@IamMagicAOM Awesome, thanks! I've played AoM (like super casually, i.e. solo bot skirmishes) since I was like 7, but as I got older and got super competitive in other genres Retold has me HYPED and I'm trying to actually learn RTS for real, and upgrades/eco-ups seem to be the hardest part for me right now haha
You mention thinking you can't be aggressive as Freyr but I'm not sure this was that aggressive? You opted for heroic rather than army. This is a case where choosing Ullr for the hillfort, dropping that in front of his forward TC, then teching for early siege could have worked pretty well.
Really love the gameplay and being vulnerable enough to share your losses for the benefit of learning!
possible! i'll need to try that next time, it just feels really tough vs cheiros since they can shoot from behind tc and then you have katapeltes alongside them, just makes for a very nasty composition
My issue with that strat is that its to expensive for so early for how unsafe it is while heroic is giving you much better ROI with more tech upgrades and as freyr you are guaranteed to have better eco than your oppo unless youre playing vs thor
And even than id go freya for aggression instead of ullr
Great games! What do you think of choosing Ullr to mix in Classical Age Huskarls vs Atlantean? Since all the Atlantean anti-infantry is pierce damage before Mythic. Is that a viable plan?
That could be good, I wonder how cheiros do vs them, I’ll need to test it out
@@IamMagicAOM iirc the huskarl are rather fast for infantry units, so maybe they'd be able to avoid a good deal of the cheiro splash damage by virtue of moving out of the way as they close in on the backline?
Do you have ranked anxiety? If yes, how do you overcone it?
I had a bit but I just overcome it by pushing myself to play
Eventually I’ll lose one and all the anxiety will dissipate and I’ll be fine
It's not the end of the world but having livestream chat in a YT vid is a bit distracting. Everytime a message pops up it naturally attracts the eye's attention
True, sorry about that let me see what I can do maybe I’ll get less intrusive alerts
@@IamMagicAOMpersonally, I don't think it is a big deal at all. Do whatever is easiest for you to upload the material. If screen recording is an easy way to get gameplay out for us to view, I don't think anyone would be complaining!
I've noticed when finding herdables out in the wild, high level players always select then click them to their TC manually instead of just pressing the TC hotkey and clicking the "rally herdables" icon. Its a minor point but the latter seems more effecient. Any particular reason?
Sometimes we do this to avoid going in a predictable way so they don’t get intercepted by your opponent
Sometimes it just feels faster to do
