    R5 C by far the best camera I've owned. Image is amazing and the latest firmware update has improved it a little more. The separate cinema operating system has many pro exposure and focusing tools that make it very easy to use. Battery is really the only issue for me but a firmware update coming in June will make a 30% improvement and canon also stated the switching time between video and photo will be much quicker also.

    • @DynamicPhil84
      @DynamicPhil84  Год назад

      The new update coming next month does look impressive, but it just wasn't quite enough to justify me keeping the camera. 40 min or so of battery life is better than 30, but I need at least 1-1.5 hrs per battery for this to really be practical for my needs. It's a fantastic camera otherwise.

      @@DynamicPhil84roblem I have with these reviews is no one compares against another 8k 60p raw camera. Closest I see is Sony a7r5 or some 6k solutions. Looking to future proof my work like George Lucas did. Want to shoot wedding videos in slow mo and have full control over coloring and future proofing.

    • @DynamicPhil84
      @DynamicPhil84  Год назад +1

      @@johncox5839 I think the R5C would be great for future proofing and shooting wedding videos, as long as you are willing to rig it up. That's the main caveat here. The R5C NEEDS to be rigged in order to get the full potential out of the camera. If you want to be light and not have to deal with external batteries, mounting systems, rails, etc. then you can consider other 8K cameras like the Fuji XH2 or Sony A1, which will both shoot 8K but also have great photo features and don't need to be rigged up. However, neither of those does 8k60, they top out at 8k30, and no internal raw. So you have to ask yourself the question: do I want all the features and I'm willing to create a big, complicated rig? Or do I want a light run and gun setup that does not need to be rigged at all, but can't shoot 8k60 or lots of slow motion. Or consider investing in a powerful computer, use the latest version of DaVinci Resolve, which has 2x AI upscaling. That way, you can upscale 4k60 footage to 8k60 and still retain tons of detail. The new Resolve AI upscaler is pretty awesome and it's only going to get better.

    I've been waiting for this camera for so long as a matter of long term investment. Althought these limitations you will always have a camera that can deliver any project you want to do. In many projects the client ask me for a few pictures for social media, the quality of the video is so great that you can pick a frame and deliver it as a picture. Also the XF-AVC codec is non-demand cpu and the quality is near the same as good in most of the cases as the craw is. Also when I have to shoot long sessions I can plug the camera and record hours and hours with no overheating. The batteries....the truth is only Canon LP6H works fine! Thank you!

    • @DynamicPhil84
      @DynamicPhil84  Год назад +1

      For me the problems really came when I was filming events and I needed to quickly switch to photo mode. Having the bulky V-mount battery mounted on the camera made it really difficult when I wanted to switch over to shooting photos (just being able to put my eye to the viewfinder was hard with the battery in the way), or if I had the v-mount battery in my pocket, I kept getting the cable caught on things. There was one event in particular where I just kept having problems with where to place the battery when I'm switching back and forth between photo and video mode, and that really turned me off to the whole experience of using the camera in this sort of situation.

    Right now I think the Z8 is exactly what you wanted when you got the R5C. I have the R5C and it is with a cage and a power bank, conected with a flexible USB-C cable (Pgytech P-GM-122 0.65 m). With this I never had a issue with the cable as I wired it directly to the cage. The battery life is now about 4h, and I almost only shoot in 8k-RAW 60fps. Now because I don't shoot a lot videos, I have no issues with the filesize. The PC is fast enough for realtime playback at 8k 60 colorgraded from raw. As a hobby videographer who likes sharp videos with nice colors, the R5C is the right tool for me. If 8K-RAW 60fps was working also only with the internal battery, it would be better, and I would prefer it with a IBIS, the video OS is great and for me it is worth the price.

      I do enjoy Canon's video menu system, it is one of the better ones for sure. I ended up picking up the Fuji X-H2, which overall ticks enough of the boxes for me to be my ideal hybrid small form factor photo and video camera. The only thing it is lacking is internal raw, but I picked up the Blackmagic Video Assist to handle recording BRaw externally in 8k if I need it. Otherwise, the internal ProRes at 8k and all the amazing photo features and Fuji film simulations take care of everything else I need.

The mounting points on the bottom of the C70 are a bit odd though, the ones that thread into the baseplate of the RS3 are off-center so you have to keep that in mind. Ummm... seriously? Through my sleeve and my shirt? 😂 Yeeeah, not gonna happen. I recently picked up the Fuji XH2 and I can get around 1.5 hours of battery shooting in 8K24 internally. I recall similar battery life when I tested the Sony A1 2 years ago. So Canon really has no excuses for their poor battery life. @DynamicPhil84  Год назад +1

      Honestly, neither lol. I used to be a Sony guy, and I think the fx3 is a great camera, but I HATE that you can't control the noise reduction on it. I used to own the A7Siii which is basically the FX3 in a different body, and that was one of the main reasons I sold it, because of not being able to control the noise reduction. But the FX3 has a great body and the top handle/mic attachment make it really nice. But no internal raw, which is a similar issue with the R6. You have to use an Atomos recorder to get raw on both of these cameras, and it's ProRes Raw, which I really dislike. But if you're not worried about Raw, then either one of these would be great cameras, though I'd lean towards the R6 if you need to also take lots of photos. FX3 has very limited photo capabilities. Thanks for the compliment as well :)

    Canon have said they did not/will not put Canon Log 2 in this camera because the sensor cannot capture enough dynamic range to support that gamma.

    • @DynamicPhil84
      @DynamicPhil84  Год назад

      That's really kind of shocking actually, considering this is a full frame sensor, and the C70 which is Super35 can capture CLog 2. I find it suspicious they would say that though since you can set CLog 2 in the RAW file settings when editing in Premiere or Resolve...

    • @jordans.6769
      @jordans.6769 Год назад +3

      @@DynamicPhil84 the C70 has more dynamic range because it has a more refined sensor technology for video called dual gain output. The R5C is just a standard CMOS sensor.
      Resolve will let you interpret the raw footage in CLog2 because that’s exactly what it is - raw footage. Raw footage is captured before a gamma curve is applied to it (Standard, Bt709, CLog2/3, etc.). It makes sense that you would be able to interpret it as CLog2 in resolve or any other NLE, but you will notice that if you are filming a high dynamic range scene and do this, the shadows are VERY noisy, because the gamma (Clog2) is stretching the sensor data beyond its limits.
      It would be nice if Canon gave us the option to just use Clog2 at our discretion and deal with the noise, since it is clear that CLog3 is limiting the sensor slightly, but I understand why they don’t.

    • @DynamicPhil84
      @DynamicPhil84  Год назад +1

      @@jordans.6769 Thanks for clarifying that, you are quite informed! I've found that Resolve's built-in noise reduction does a fantastic job of cleaning up noisy shadows, as long as they aren't too noisy to begin with. It is still surprising to me that a Super35 sensor with smaller pixels can outperform a full frame sensor, but I know that it's more than just pixel size. And now that I think about it, because the R5C is 8K and the C70 tops out at 4K, the R5C's pixel size may not be that much larger than the C70's.

    • @DynamicPhil84
      @DynamicPhil84  Год назад +1

      Yes, this was my biggest problem with the R5C. Terrible battery life, even after the latest update it's not much improved. I don't believe the R5C has a shutter priority mode, that's more on the photo side of things and there is only Video or Photo mode on this camera, not multiple photo modes like the R5. If you want to use 8k60, I believe you must shoot in RAW, which will give you Canon Raw Light files to work with. In the RAW settings in Premiere or Resolve, you can choose a picture profile. I would recommend Canon Log 2 or Log 3. Log 2 will give you more dynamic range, though the R5C's sensor isn't really capable of using that much range, so shadows will be noisy with Log 2. Log 3 will give you cleaner shadows, but slightly less dynamic range over all. Hope this helps!

      @@ItsBerg You bring up some really good points and honestly, I'm starting to wonder why Canon made the R5C as they did. Having the R5 and R6 already, it would have made more sense to invest their efforts into making an 8k full frame version of the C70. In a sense, it was probably my own fault for being enticed by the allure of 8k60 internal raw.

    • @ItsBerg
      @ItsBerg Год назад +2

      @@DynamicPhil84 I think they wanted to make the best hybrid possible.. I see no issue with this design. Most hybrids use the same menu for both stills and video, but they actually threw the cinema OS in here, which gives it head and shoulders better functionality than any of their mirrorless cams.. the exposure tools, shutter angle, dual iso.. hell, on their mirrorless cams the histogram goes away when you hit record!!
      This to me, is for the video person that needs to go from rig, to gimbal, to photos all in one day. More often then not they’ll have a solid power source for anything rigged. People love the blackmagic and at first it was complaints about battery life and people learned to get that type of power out of the camera you have to rig it. I think what they should have done better was position it as so, vs call it a hybrid like they do with a7siii’s and stuff, and get peoples hopes up it lasts as long in video as it does with stills. Thing is, unlike a7siii, and most other hybrids, this is downsampling in all modes at 8k, and shoots raw internally at 8k, 6k, and 3k.
      This camera is truly a serious work of art when you consider what it truly gives you vs what we all expected, and that’s 100% canon’s fault for making it feel like its a normal hybrid. Most of their other cameras are already hybrids, they should have said this is a camera for professionals with power solutions, external monitoring, and stabilization systems. On an interview a Canon rep said no ibis because we figure professionals have gimbals and such, and that gave me an aha moment. People are disappointed because they didn’t lead with that. It still would’ve sold. The r5c is canon’s blackmagic 6k, but better. Raw shooting, cinema exposure features, dual iso, but it has a better sensor, more resolution, and you do laughingly get more battery life than the 6ks at 20 mins. Rig the r5c up with a simple vmount and it lasts an entire dayyyyy.
      I understand most people’s frustration, but I love this thing. Aside from the Panasonics, which lack good AF and some of the raw shooting, this is as good as it gets when it comes to professional tools built in.
