You finally answered my frame rate question for this new body. As an R5 user frame rates have always been problematic especially not being able to access 48fps. You’re literally the r5 go to on RUclips. 🥂
A Followup to my previous comment regarding s&f … when shooting in 4K and using S&F are those frame rates up to 60p the down sampled 8K?
AWESOME VIDEO! Thank you for posting it! I am thinking of buying a R5-C but I had two questions.
- Are all the photo functions the same as the RC? In particular does the R5-C shoot the same amount of frame in “HSS” as the R5?
- Does the R5-C have any type of autofocus when filming 4K 120?

I bought an r5c but sold it. Decided to keep my R5 and wait till the next one. I quickly realized that the R5c will make me want to use my camera LESS not more. 35 minute battery life, ugly bulky fan make it hard to hold the left side, no aperture control, no 3 custom modes, tiny cinema menu, no video clips in photo mode, cant reach the screen for touch AF with my right thumb anymore because it too far back, worst unreliable AF, custom buttons cannot be assigned to needed features. My R5 is a tool and a toy! I play with it all the time. The R5c is just a work tool. I realized i don't want a $4500 tool. I realized i'm not a cinematographer.... im a run and gun hybrid shooter. You can not run and gun with a external v-mount and charger brick plugged in to your camera. lol. Switching overheating anxiety for battery dying & AF anxiety is the R5c.
at least you can control battery dying anxiety, you never know when overheating will bite you.
I've been using both, and each one definitely has its strengths and weaknesses, but I think if you are looking for the best quick "Run & Gun" hybrid option, the R5 is probably the best choice for you. Have a great day!

@@cruachfilms facts. It’s something about the big booty on the back of the R5c and needing external battery power that made it no longer a compact run and gun camera for me.
@@DeafDirector yes. Trying the R5c made me realize that I want to remain run and gun and not be rigging out cameras.
IBIS Statement! Everytime i bring my gimbal on shoots with my R5 I end up not using it becuase my R5 IBIS is so good and im lazy. You're going to miss it when its gone and you need heavy gimbal again. "I'm just saying."

My biggest shock with the R5C is that when I ordered it in March Canon told me it would take around 6 months for delivery (even though I live in Japan). Strangely enough when I ordered an apple mac studio in March in Japan it arrived within 3 weeks. Has anyone else had such a long wait with the R5C? Anyway glad to have your video content Bryan to get to know the camera.
The supply chain issues have been insane. I ordered a RED Komodo in December and still have no clue when I’m supposed to get it. It appears the R5c is in supply and shipping now, so hopefully you’ll get it soon. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

Can u shoot 4k 120 in crop mode? Its something I wish the r5 did.

R5 has more like 11 stops and the R5c has more like 11.5 stops in real life becuase of xfavc. Both are underwhelming compare to sony, panasonic, nikon, red, etc. But i do like that Wide DR the R5c has. Can shoot without using log for events.
Who's shooting raw in super 16? I'm also curious whos bringing an R5c on a multi cam shoot with other cinema cameras to use timecode?
@@presise1620 My figures came from a (german) interview between the german photo gear dealer Foto Koch and a Canon engineer. Canon does not officially state the dynamic range of the R5 and the R5C, but the figures that I stated above (14 stops of dynamic range in the R5C opposed to 13 in the R5) are an official statement from an actual Canon engineer in an interview. I can provide the link for reference, if you understand german.

The battery drains almost identical to the R5 in Photo mode. You only have the battery drain issues in Video mode. Have a great day!
Just got the R5C and excited to use it having been using the R5 up to now. The first thing I noticed though is how loud the fan is. Concerned that's not going to be good for interviews in silent settings. Also curious to see how it performs with handheld non-tripod and walking shots vs the R5. I love to be mobile and don't always have time to set up a gimbal or tripod and have found I'm able to shoot interviews handheld without a tripod on the R5 which I love. Walking shots do have that wobble on the R5 of course.
Does the raven eye video transmiter works with the r5c?
The RavenEye will work on the R5C. Just send the video signal out the HDMI to the RavenEye. Have a great day!

That is an interesting issue. By design all 4K video on the R5c is downsampled 8K, therefore you can ONLY shoot in 4KHQ equivalent from the R5C.On paper it should match perfectly. I'm not sure, but I'm wondering if there is something in your HDMI export options on the camera that is affecting this. Good luck and have a great day!
You can set the R5C, so that it has drug AF in Videomode just not in every mode. In 120fps there was preset the shoot with the Center AF point, you have also to deactivate this, for a workingng AF with tutchscreen in 120fps, but the AF in 120fps is much worse than in normal mode. Then my biggest shock was, that it has 2.9K RAW HQ 120fps but only in super 16. The 4K 120fps in FF is soft (to soft for me), and 120 fps in super35 would be the solution for sharp 120fps with a good quality, but Canon gives us only 2k 120fps in super35 and this is a cripple hammer, if Canon will enable super35 120fps in 4k we would have a nice 120fps but we can only select 2k🤨. Battery life is mi biggest positive shock as I always use the PowerBank and I never had hours like I have now😁

The menu isn't challenging, just different. Just be prepared to spend some time going through it and getting used to it and you'll end up really liking it. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
The menu is better in some ways. OMG the WB feature, ISO display, False color and Wide DR is mind blowing coming from the R5. Why can i have that in my R5? At least the WB button.... damn
R5C is arguably the best hybrid camera currently available on the market IF you can get past the poor battery life in video mode. I much prefer the footage I get w/o the IBIS (but w/ stabilized lens) to the wobbly/unnatural footage w/ an R5 or R3, and cinecam features like false color w/o needing to use a field monitor are very useful/welcome -- and you get one of the best still cameras available in the same package. I hate to pile on, but the battery life is an issue for me (much more so than overheating w/ the R5), so it seems Canon fixed one issue and created another (bigger) issue w/ the R5C -- at least for me. If rigging out the camera or using in a studio environment, etc., then not an issue. For anybody considering the camera, note that battery life is similar to R5 (or better since no IBIS) in stills mode, but that while in video mode, the camera is sucking power pretty much the same whether recording or not. Sadly, for my style of shooting, the camera just didn't work out because of battery life, and I didn't even get a chance to try it out in alpine (cold) environments where I typically shoot -- so all downhill from there (pun intended : -))
The Battery is an issue you have to deal with on this camera, no doubt. The footage is amazing, but without an external source, you have to deal with a whole lot of batteries. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

Thanks for the informative videos. Will the R5C be the better choice for filming surfing from the water and the beach? Salty Surf Housings makes a great housing for both the R5 and R5C. I’m leaning towards the R5C.
Both cameras will get you great Video, but my biggest concern in your situation would be the battery life restraints of the R5C. If you could find a way to supply external power in the housing, then I think you’ll be fine. But if you have to rely on internal batteries in the ocean, I would go with a Canon R5

The aperture dial wasn't a shock to me because on Sony cameras you use the top dial to change the aperture.. same as it is on the R5C

i currently have had a Canon 80D for a long time and have been depsertley researching for months on different full frame cameras for both high quality photography along with stunningly crisp Video for a number of scenarios. I have been buying alot of Sigma Lenses that are EF mount which sucks because the cameras that are obviously better are ones like the Sony A7siii, Sony A7R V, Canon R5 (What I am most leaning towards) which all have different mounts that I would buy adapters to fit my current lenses. I have been debating for so long but deserve an upgrade in quality from what I currently use. Any recomendations on any cameras I did not mention or any I did mention! Do you think the R5 or R5c would be perfect for me? I would really appreciate any suggestions from people who have used many different cameras and would like to help me buy the perfect one!
There are a lot of great cameras out there, but based on what you said, it sounds like the Canon R5 might be your best choice. It's a fantastic photo camera that can also be set up to get really great video, and the best part for you is that Canon makes incredible EF to RF adapters so you could still easily use all the glass you have purchased. I still personally prefer using my EF lenses on the R5. Good luck and have a great day!

Don't you find the fan casing rather fragile in terms of build quality? I feel like if I ever dropped it, it would shatter. Feels like cheap plastic. In addition, there is no weather sealing on this camera. If not for those things, I think I'd grab one right away. What's your take?

Been looking to get the R5 for over a year now. I do mostly video but also photography. On the video side I already own a bmpcc4k so looking for either the R5 or r5c as a b cam / gimbal cam or for jobs where I need to travel light and bring a camera that can do it all. In Europe the price difference between the R5 and r5c is quite substantial. Is it really worth paying the premium (about €700 price difference) to get the r5c and lose things like IBIS, better autofocus and decent battery life?
Yes, the difference is worth it. IBIS is mostly useful for stills. I video, you may have wobble, that ruins your footage. But overall, the R5C is world changing compared to the R5. You also for example get an extra stop of dynamic range, better codecs, 8k60 (R5 is only 8k30), all modes oversampled from 8k (in R5 only 4k HQ), the multifunction hotshoe and 4ch internal audio recording and support for the Canon 0.71 speedbooster. All things the R5 does not have.
If you are video first then get the R5 C unless you film wildlife, vehicles, or fast action. The R5 C autofocus is actually superior at filming people in typical situations. Object tracking might be a tossup.

I just did a shoot with the FX3, and it is an amazing camera, but for me, the lack of an EVF, less intuitive Menu System, and overall Sony body ergonomics, leads me to choose the R5C. They are really both amazing cameras, but I personally prefer the R5C. Have a great day!

Moving away from Sony (A7SIII and A7IV) due to our company changing all the gear to EF/RF mount cameras. From this one I'd need for it to excel both in video and photos, and high frame rates are a must. We have 100% potent gear for regular 4k stuff. Really struggling on deciding whether I should try to tolerate the downsides of the R5 (mainly overheating on the interested modes) or the R5C (lack of IBIS, bulkier body, increased price).
i've has both. If you want to be a cinematographer get the R5c. If you have an M1 mac and a hybrid shooter get an R5. The bulkiness of the R5c and terrible battery life will blow your mind coming from sony.

@@themediocreguitargod467 I got my R5 Heatsink modified so it gets longer run times but it still overheats. I use 4k60 a lot. If you’re shooting a long form event like a wedding, sports, fashion show 4k60 will overheat after being at the event for 2+ hours even if you turn camera off periodically. If that is what you shoot get an R5c. But bring triple the amount of batteries and be ready for more out of focus shots. Plus have a gimbal ready.
IMHO the R5C is not bulky at all. I got it for 4 weeks now, been using it for events (video), motorsports (video) and some street photography. It is so insanely convenient to shoot with the R5C.. I was blown away how versatile it is. I am absolutely glad there is no IBIS because I use a gimbal for video at all times unless I want the shakiness feel to the videos it works awesome in a cage with a handle. I also feel like the way the screen is a little more far away from the body makes it way more convenient to use. Battery life on the other hand is absolutely horrible. I‘ve been able to shoot a whole day (charging 2 batteries when they're empty, going back and forth between 2 sets) with 4 batteries. But that problem is easily solved with V-mount batteries which will give you more power than you need. Just make sure to never leave your camera at idle in video mode... it drains super quick even when not doing anything. Photo mode on the other hand will last very long.. can't complain about it at all. I was shooting a whole day of a Rally event and still had battery left. IMHO get the R5C over the R5... it's ABSOLUTELY worth it. Especially at that small of a price difference it is a no brainer.

I think Canon was really not able to properly fit the cinema OS onto R5C yet. I hope firmware updates will fix it :)

yeah it's definitely half baked for now.
It's funny bc I never even bothered to check the wifi issue.. I just assumed that wifi wouldn't work in cinema mode, and turns out I was right. I still love my R5C and greatly prefer it over the R5.. but it's clear to me that the cinema mode is still in beta. Handles all the core functionality extremely well.. but anything outside of that is kinda hit or miss.
