The one thing I think a lot of people don't appreciate is how GM used the Pontiac logo to help you guide the cooler into the tracks between the front seats.
REI! Hilarious. We have a friend who is a licensed massage therapist. He had an Aztek for quite some time, and it was perfect for toting his table around. As I recall, he felt it was quite reliable. The Buick Rendezvous was built on the same platform, yet looked so different. I really appreciate what you do.
At the 99 chicago auto show i was at the prototype aztec display and was conversing with an engineer and studio designer when i was asked what i would change i told them to move the small park lamps off the hood and put bigger parklamps right above the headlamps ! They ended up doing it and i got a framed picture of the update and a thank you from GM ! I still have it to this day !
This was very bad sugestion. Those bigger park lamps what makes it all quarky. Nowdays its ok, but at launch it did not helped. If they would stay with a concept it would had more chanses to stay alive. Oh well, still a cool car 😂
Always thought these looked like an "outdoorsy" version of the Chevy Equinox. Later Pontiac had the Torrent which was basically an exact copy of the Equinox.
It was heavily under appreciated; if they had come out with full colour body pladding the first year, it probably wouldn’t have got so much hate. The 2003 to 2005 models with full colouring looked lot better overall!
I would have seriously considered getting one of these used if the 3800 had been an option. I’m guessing that wasn’t really a possibility since it doesn’t look like a 90 degree V6 would even fit in that cramped engine bay.
nah, it was based on the weird styling. also, people probably just went with the Montana instead. Those were probably still on the lots too. I'm telling you these trucks were very polarizing when they were introduced and most people weren't into them.
STUNNING vehicle, so practical, with innovative features! A "minivan" with real back doors, one of the first compact FWD SUVs. It may not look purty, but it looks rugged. Cool things like HUGE cargo space, thoughtful details like a center console that also can be removed and be used as a cooler. And all buttons designed to be usable with winter gloves on. Nice. A tailgate designed for sitting, with "butt cups" in the tailgate, and radio controls back there for when you're enjoying a bonfire or tailgating before a game. So practical. SO many great features. If only Pontiac had styled it a BIT more cleanly, like its corporate twin, the Buick Rendezvous, it would have been a much bigger success! People buy and use these as mini campers for a reason. Lots of outlets, room, features, dependability and aftermarket options GALORE! (Like the Honda Element.) GREAT travel and "lifestyle" vehicle, GM just bothced the styling... slightly. The Concept was great. Looks great in gray or black that helps the body cladding "blend in " (until they finally painted it the same color as the rest of the body in its last years, but it was too late.). There HAS been a more recent vehicle with a removeable console/cooler... sorry the name isn't coming to me but it was reviewed in the last 6 months or so.
Element was a much better execution of a youth lifestyle vehicle. And I doubt Honda took any inspiration from the Aztec especially seeing as development for the Element started back in 1998 as a concept known as the Model X
The late 90’s and early 2000’s version of the “Family Truckster” from National Lampoons Family Vacation, LoL! You think it’s ugly until You Drive it!!!!
This is one of those vehicles that I made fun of when it came out and did not understand it, but would totally buy and proudly drive today. Love the green color too!
Important note: The Aztek came with the lower body cladding in grey (like this example) only in 2001. The cladding was updated five months later to match the body color.
Take me back to when the Aztek and Juke were the ugliest cars on the road, nowadays it seems like every manufacturer (sans Mazda?) is trying to one-up them
the cars we look back on as "failures" were actually alot cooler at the time they came out then people think, the aztec was HUGE when it came out they gave a couple away on survivor same with the avalanche, and the pt cruiser had a waiting list almost a year long to get one
Besides the polarizing styling, the Aztek wound up the odd one out in Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealers. Once you got past its' controversial looks, it was as big and almost as pricey as the Rendezvous or the Montana minivan, only seated 5 but drove like a minivan. Next to it was the Vibe which cost 10 grand less, drove better than the sedan it was based on ("We Build Excitement" vs Toyota's mushpot sedan suspension) and got a solid 35 mpg, the GMC Envoy which was a familiar BOF pickup-based SUV, and the aforementioned Rendezvous and Montana which seated 7.
I miss my aztek, mine was yellow with decent mods. It made it until 380k miles with regular maintenance and preventative care. I had adjustable air ride suspension and they look nicer when lowered.
Thanks Zack. About 20 yrs ago there was a yellow Aztek i would see a few times a week. At that time, I thought it looked so weird and ugly. Nowadays it's grown on me and I find it quirky.
The Aztek may not be pretty but credit where it’s due, it set out to be a car for the active lifestyle person, and having taken rides to the redwood forest many times for hikes in one, it worked good at that. Also you could get an inflator in the back for air mattresses and balls
I had the Rendezvous, mine made it to 200k miles before I sold it and honestly it ran great but DONT EVER spill Versatrak fluid on yourself because you'll smell it for months. The smell is impossible to get out
I think it looks cool! I remember having the Hot Wheels car. I believe it was the orange colored one. I think it would be fun to have, but I would want to use it to get outdoors. I wouldn’t want to baby it. I’d want AWD. Seems like it would be sweet for car camping.
I like that green, certainly attention-getting. GM was too early for the off-road-appearance crossover trend. If it weren't for the nose and the Kammback, this would have been a good seller like the Buick Rendezvous was. These are practical and not terrible by GM standards.
It came out at the wrong time, if GM released this vehicle now as a 2024-2025, maybe a 2026, with a turbo or hybrid powertrain with all the outdoorsmen, active lifestyle features, it would sell very well.
The Aztex is only a bold look to people who had and have never seen some of the stuff the European car companies were turning out, especially the French.
My 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT1 had a 3.4 Ram air was pretty good quick engine. Bought it with a 101,000 miles. Had it for 10 years. Water pump went out. I ran it hot and it crack the head gasket. $1000 later it was back on the road. I finally gave it to my dad. And he drove it for another 4 years before it was sold for $500 Just saying not sure why 3.4 aren’t mentioned much they were pretty decent.
It’s another styling foo-pah. Just putting a normal painted hood above the existing grille, instead of that thing with scoops, aerofoils and orange blinkers either side, improves the frontal appearance instantly. However ahead of current trends the Aztec was, if it wasn’t so ugly more people would have bought it.
It was ahead of its time with what it was going for. Definitely if released today it would've faired better in the perception department. As for looks, I don't think it's the worst looking thing ever. There are certainly worse looking cars being sold today.
The duel-zone climate control is the same as her U-Body cousin the Oldsmobile Silhouette. Everything under the skin is the same as like a Chevy Venture. This makes mechanical parts super available to find. Her LA1 engine is also common to the Pontiac Grand Am and Olds Alero. Guess the Aztek - as the GMC Envoy XUV - is pretty revealing of the reasons General Motors went downhill. Instead of focusing on build quality and efficiency, they chose to bring creative and revolutionary products. Too bad people only wanted improvement and evolution within what their were already driving. 20 years later, The Camry is still the best-selling vehicle in the USA.

I never understood why people hated this car so much. I mean, yeah, it’s not pretty (I personally think it looks kind of interesting), but most modern BMWs are way worse IMO. Besides, as Zach said if it came out today it would be considered cool.
Rendezvous' big upgrade was a 3rd-row seat. To this day crossovers in the largest 2-row size are outsold by the 3-rows and the 2-rows a size smaller. That's why Ford cut the Edge, Nissan's planning to drop the Murano and Toyota rebrands theirs every few years.
Back in 2001, the Aztek was ugly, but it's actually aged very well, but today, it's not really that bad as many vehicles look similar. This vehicle was just too far ahead of it's time.

Cybertruck, yeah of course.
Probably more reliable too 😂
Way to lower the bar all the way
What's the difference between a Cybertruck and a dumpster? Dumpsters come in some good colors.
If this doesn't come with a little baggie of blue stuff I don't want it.
Pontiac Aztek has the cooler, Honda CRV has the picnic table. Now we just need to find a car with a built in oven and we can go camping
The early pontiac fieros were kinda famous for being 1 time ovens
Rivian R1T has an optionable grill
