I’m pretty sure my high school chemistry teacher had one of these, which fits because he was pretty quirky. Sadly, he got cancer, but to make more money, he bought the car wash he used to work at, and went I to a partnership with one of his old students

My parents had one for eight years. They got a 2002 certified pre-owned in 2004. Very unreliable car. It broke down on us constantly and the transmission had to be rebuilt at less then ten years old. There is a reason that these are not on the road anymore. Half of the features broke after time. The previous owners kept the tent and cooler so we did not get to enjoy it in the woods.

This video makes me sad for the poor Aztek designers! They put so much thought and so many cool little features in this car, and people hated them for it. I think it's also got kind of a cute, light 80s futurist vibe too, with that angular rear section.

I bought an Aztek because Bryan Cranston. I asked him actually one time and he actually loved the Aztek, which I was surprised to hear. He was at a convention I visited since there was a Breaking Bad booth.
Thank Bryan Cranston for recommending me to get the blue 2003 Aztek that got me through high school.

I actually never thought of the Aztek as ugly, peculiar probably. Doug showed us all it's features, I and most everyone didn't know about. I want one now. I could go camping, vacationing without anything else but my car. Greta!
I was just thinking that. I wish they'd released this in Europe, I'd totally get a used one. It's even better than the early Honda CR-Vs picnic table. The cup holders on the tailgate/bench is just such a cute touch, and the cooler/centre console is just brillant. Even if you skip on the tent option, it's still a really clever design, ugly or not. I love it!

The biggest problem with the Aztek, look wise, was that the wheels looked too small for the body. It would have looked, not pretty, but a lot better with slightly bigger wheels.
The wheels are fine, not every car needs 23" rims to destroy comfort and ride quality like they seem to nowadays

I have an Aztek. The woman who owned it before me decided to put bigger tires on. Very problematic as they rubbed the wheel wells when turning a corner I'll never understand what goes on in the head of other people. Looks over performance? Not with my car.

I'm A former Aztek owner (Mine was totaled when a tree flee on it during a storm} Here are a few other quirks.
On the cars with the rear stereo controls, the key could be removed from the ignition in the accessory position.
an option heads up display was available that projected speedometer readings on the windshield.
The cars supplied with the cloth upholstery used a material that was resistant to water damage
The cars instruments included an electronic compass. Calibrating the compass required driving the car in a tight circle 3 to f times in a calibration mode.
Many of the mechanical parts were interchangeable with Montana minivans

Because the Montana uses most of the same components. Even the Engine block and the entire setup under the hood
Yup you are correct. The aztek and rendezvous were basically built on the gm lumina apv/Montana platform. That's the reason why people thought they looked sporty but then when they drove it they drove like a minivan, instead of a proper unibody crossover

A car whose central console becomes an efficient cooler for your drinks, a spatious car that comes with a bench, an air bed and A FREAKING TENT (a tente with its own carrying case) gets only a 4? After you spent 2/3 thirds of the video speaking about its unique features? Really?
As ugly and unreliable as the Aztek is, in the Features category it deserved a solid 20 out of 10.

I'm not sure why people think it 'having a tent' *As an option* is so great or something. You can buy SUV / truck tents for any make and model of vehicle basically. You can also get roof top ones.

I was in my late 20's when the Aztek came out and I always loved how it looked.
Maybe because it's different, but it had a functionality to it that worked with the aesthetics.

My wife had a 2001 Aztek in college. Problems included:
- The gas gauge didn't work and would fluctuate wildly between E and F constantly.
- The sunroof leaked when it rained and would drip water into one of the front cupholders.
- The radio would only blast static at a very loud volume unless it had recently rained, in which case the rainwater would soak deep into the car's electrical system and cause the radio to work properly.
- The engine would overheat when the car idled too long in traffic.
- The entire front dashboard came unglued and was slowly bending upward in the Texas heat.
- All 4 windows broke eventually and began falling down.
- The rear hatch wouldn't stay open so my wife carried around tennis balls to stuff into the gap and hold the roof open. She also had a cut-off rake handle that served this purpose as well.
But this car is cool and full of quirks and features ,a maserati is shit though.

And it's hauled my kids (you know what kids do the inside of a car..) firewood, plywood, bikes, metal.. I just can't find fault with the body or interior. Well, one of the ten speakers in its Pioneer stereo has given up the ghost, so I guess I could get mad about that..
The Aztec and Honda Element were way ahead of their time. If they were made today, they'd sell like hot cakes.

In a very basic way, the Aztek is pretty cool. GM really put some thought into it, and considering the time frame that this came from (and the condition most Pontiacs were in at the time), it's nice to see some real effort being put into a vehicle. It's a shame the thing came out ugly as sin and underpowered. Stick the 3.9 in there, smooth the body out and you'd have a really quirky SUV.

I remember when the Aztek came out. G.M. was ridiculed and skewered over this car. I thought at the time , if Toyota had come out with this, they would have probably been praised over it's uniqueness and versatility.

The only reason I put the aztek down all those years ago was because it is the visual aesthetic equivalent of fecal matter. The tent, cooler, etc. are cool ideas. Maybe Jeep should put those in their models since they're off-road models, so it'd make sense.

I just bought a 2001 for 1500 83k miles. Radiator cracked how do I change it it doesn't look too easy

The problem with the Aztek is that it was just way too ahead of its time. It might have been insanely ugly by early 2000’s standards, but for cars, trucks, and SUVs today it actually doesn’t look bad. Weird for sure, but not something you wouldn’t expect to see on today’s roads with its angles and lights. This doesn’t just go for the Aztek either, plenty of Pontiac cars in general were just so far ahead of the curve and predicted the future pretty accurately for the most part. The Pontiac Solstice is now regarded as an all time classic sports car alongside the likes of the Nissan 350Z and Mazda RX-8 of its era, the Fiero has an unmistakably 1980’s retro design, and many of the muscle cars like the Trans Am’s and GTO’s are looked back at fondly as some of the best in that category. Even concept cars like the the Rageous looks like something you’d see that would’ve been made in the early 2010’s, and it was made back in the 1997! Now I wouldn’t say that the Aztek looks as “modern” as that and the Solstice, but it certainly had some good ideas going for it. Had it not been as blocky and maybe smoothed out just a little bit with the top grills and lights being smaller, I’d say it has good appeal. Tbh, even the normal version doesnt seem too bad for me... Just needs to be smoothed out and modernized a little, and get a good powertrain. I guess a PHEV version of those could be nice, with like 200 combined HP...

I lived in an Aztek for 2 years while I saved up enough money to buy my first house. Saved a ton of money during those years and the car paid for itself several times over when considering what I would have spent on rent (I lived in the bay area, California). Actually, I mostly lived in the office building where I worked and just slept in the Aztek at night. If you're not a big person, it's surprisingly comfortable.

I always liked how they looked, but honestly the Aztek is probably one of the go to vehicles for someone that wants to live in their car.

The irony of the Aztek is that it's design was about 15 years too early.
It looked like a bizarre spaceship car in the 90's, but honestly, it looks about on par with most crossovers from the last 5 years.
Not necessarily even saying it looks good, but if this thing came out today no one would look twice.
Makes one wonder what happened to a lot of people who wouldn't look twice and design like that has become regular :(

I’ve always liked the Aztek but now I love it!! I’m one of the few weird people that doesn’t think it’s ugly. This thing had its own personality in breaking bad might as well have been its own character

I’m rewatching Breaking Bad, and wanted to watch this review again. GM brought back the Hummer, they should bring back the Aztek, I think it could be a cool rival to Subaru.

It would be interesting see if it has any cool features, how their radar guns clock people, how well they perform, and if they could keep up with some of the exotic, high performing vehicles you usually test drive, in a high speed chase.

Dubai supercars are only used for PR as far as Im aware, not really for chases. Some countries use BMWs from my understanding but nothing over the top.
Police cars are getting slower and slower. The fastest police car in recent times is the 1994-1996 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1. It could go 0-60 in about 7 seconds, and had a top speed of about 150 mph. And considering it was a 2 ton 4-door sedan, that's pretty damn good. It was so good, some departments still use them even today, more than 20 years later! I'd like to see him review one of those.

I almost put down money on one of these - I thought it was so cool. It was the fastest thing I ever test drove. The car's only sin I could see was a big plastic bar across the lower rear window which could hide a motorcycle behind you. What I loved about it was that it wasn't that big, but could hold nearly anything that any SUV could hold. I still think that they're neat as heck.

I have a 2001 and it looks practically the same as the newer ones. I can assure you it makes me happy to look at it. At first it was the ugliest thing ever but iver time I think it looks supper nice. I think it's just me enjoying it more as I drive it.

I think people that like adventure and don't want to pay for an rv or a flashy wrangler will really appreciate this unique vehicle. One thing I'd like to point out that was not brought up in the video is how awesome it is to have plastic wheel wells and side skirts that won't rust!! To me it's an added plus.
