    The problem is that they tried to make it more like the MCU whereas the other games tried a more fitting comic/anime style. So as a result everything looks so rough and crappy since some models are clearly not meant to fit the new style.
    And they got rid of the cel shading and dark outlines from umvc3 which really hurts.

      To be fair cel shading/dark outlines in the way MVC3 did it wouldn't really fit with the style Capcom went with this game. Still hate the fact that they went with a more MCU style without actually looking at the characters in the MCU and went from there instead of trying to replicate it and then transfer it to 3d.
      (also wish we got more characters from the MCU because there are plenty)

      They call me Jojo not to mention most Capcom characters definitely don't work in a realistic setting. More cartoony characters like Arthur, V Joe or Phoenix Wright would look way out of place so this choice they went with was all kinds of stupid

      Remember in MvC3 when you win a match and the screen flips like a comic book as it loads the results screen? MvCI just cuts to that stupid Red/Blue screen. Why not embrace the comic book aesthetic?

    Comparing the 2D artwork to the 3D artwork, you can tell that something got lost in translation... and I feel like it’s proportions. In every 3D model, something is askew. Either the hands are too big, the torsos are too wide/thin/short/long, the heads are too small, the legs are too thick/long, etc. If you are going for a realistic look, you have to observe the common human body proportions (at least on the humanoid characters). Otherwise, we run into an uncanny valley situation. If they were going for a stylized look, they shouldn’t have used realistic shaders. It leaves most confused...

      It should have gone for a stylized look like MVC3 or matched the concept art as closely as possible. A cell shaded style also wouldn't hurt.

      What was equally as damning was the arrogance that the producers showed when the fighting game community began complaining about the art direction immediately after the reveal trailer. Those producers just brushed it off as if it was a nonissue... "We know better than you do", was how it sounded. Maybe they thought the clamor would die down quickly as it had when SFV was revealed, but the FGC was correct when it came to MvC:I. Every time I see footage of this game, it looks like a Free-To-Play game on the App Store. *sigh* At least they sorta fixed Chun-Li's face...

      Captain America is the best example, he looks badass in the artwork, but in game his chest is too big, his neck is nonexistent, and he has bug eyes.

      In general, the human characters are the ones that really don't work with this art style.

      You can make games look as good as the concept art, or at at least decent good enough, issue is most games only use the concept art to get the designs down and default to a realistic art style.

      Fenrir/DarkAura64 I think a ton of characters should have gotten team up supers. They could have given team up supers to Iron Man and Cap, X and Zero, Gamora and Rocket (with Groot), Hawkeye and Black Widow, Thor and Hulk, they could have done Ultron and Sigma or Gamora and Strider to refrence the story mode, I think they should have done a Spider Man and Venom super that replaces Spider Man's level 3 where green goblin attacks Spider Man.

    I think you touched on the biggest issue with the visuals, "everything is too shiny". The game needs a huge lighting overhaul. There's also no shadows and no interesting lighting on any of the stages. As a result, everything looks washed out and plain. It's almost like they didn't finish setting up Unreal 4's settings before release.

      They gave the game less than half the budget of an SFV DLC season. I suppose they thought they could survive only with their hardcore install base only.*So why base the Marvel roster off the MCU, audience of which sure as shit are not all pro fighting game players?*

    That concept art would look great on the cel shaded look from recent ArcSys games. Max mentioned the in-game models are very detailed, and that precisely why they dont look good; they chose to give the models more realistic lighting and features instead of staying true to the "2D animation" feel from the art.

    There's always that possibility that there may be another version Marvel vs. Capcom infinite bigger and better then the previous.

    I actually think the push for the story mode and realistic artstyle came from Marvel, I honestly think the where trying to compete with Injustice. Basically, Marvel wanted it to be "Marvel Injustice"

    I feel like the models are ok (besides some weird looking faces) the problem is the shaders, they look cheap, like unity stock shaders, or mobile game shaders. Also the interface looks like it was made in power point.

      Yeah, the interface is very... clean. Street Fighter IV interface has a good amount of style. Even SFV used 2D portraits in the HUD and had the meter segments glow when one is filled. Almost everyone's 3D HUD portrait has the same expression and exact same angle too; goddamn JEDAH just has a vaguely determined frown on his face! A few of them at least smirk.

    Even if the presentation and characters look as anime as this, I think things would've turned out WAY better for a game that deserved way better.

      Comic book cell shade style suits these game the most because that’s the style that can add both sides without having to heavily modify character designs in order to fit it, as it’s neither too cute or exaggerated like anime, nor too overly anatomically correct and heavily detailed like realistic, comic book is truly an “anything goes” type of style, and MvC3 did showed that, don’t look at the game itself (as it’s starting to show its age), but the teaser and trailers of the game, that’s also done in the comic book style

    I think something went wrong in defining what the materials should looks like, MvC3 had that comic book look but it wasn't perfect, so they tried something different.
    Still doesn't excuse the shoulder and muscles all out of proportion.

    I noticed with the music, capcom side had remixed tracks of existing stuff some which are catchy but when i listened to them all i noticed they basically only had two parts...verse then chorus very little imagination and variation and that was it for all of them. And the Marvel side went cinematic but i found it boring. Hit sound effects sounded like punching a paper bag and for me that made the combat feel less satisfying then it should

      Gamora, Captain Marvel and Ghost Rider's themes all sounded pretty good to me but they were the only ones on the Marvel side. I don't mind giving the Marvel characters new themes but I would've preferred if they had a faster tempo and sounded more "fighting-gamey"

    *Yeah, the concept art really do look far more better in comparison, mostly with Dante.*

    Awesome video, content, commentary & thoughts as ever Max! as always really entertaining, engaging & fun to watch :). From watching all of your videos & coverage on MVCI and as a big comic book fan myself it's a real darn shame that the overall asthetic of the artwork, the character designs and the concept designs/sketches etc weren't implemented into the final game as if they were it honestly would've looked so much better! keep up the stellar work as always dude!.

    The crazy thing is they could have fixed the other characters like they did with Chun-Li and dlc Dante, setting that as one of the game’s priorities, but the game is too fucking crippled to continue it on like the other fighting games.

    Bruh, even the art had Chun-li with a shrunken head. But yeah, most of the other ones look good. Honestly, if we ever get another MvC, they should go the DBZ/Blazblue anime style, cartoon/comic style would look so much better, the 3D models just don't work. Imagine if they looked like this in game, it woulda looked amazing(even though the roster is still a dumpster fire).

    MVCI should have either stuck to the art style of 3, either that or just a had a more general stylized look. I honestly hate the psuedo realistic look that games like this and KoF went for. You have such great concept art wasted on models that don't even look nearly as good. Games IMO should always strive to have their models look as close to the concept or Promotional art as possible. Look at SNK Heroins, the promotional art looks great, but then the models look terrible. It would be better if companies adopted something akin to the Arcsys philosophy when it comes to 3D fighting games.

    what i think what happened is they were going for a modified stylized look from UMVC3 but changed during development that would explain why the models look off and some of the proportions are off

    This is what happens when you outsource modeling jobs. It's the same reason SFV's model quality is all over the place. Anyway, back to Thanos dabbing in Fortnite.

    In Marvel 3 most of the character had the style of comic books, Marvel 2 and the previous ones were sprites, but had their own unique style similar to where they originated from in terms of media. Marvel Infinite has no interesting style, because there are no shadows which make the look like shiny toys, which is bad design for a game in 2017/18.

      Players complained about MvC3's artstyle for years. You couldn't see stuff in most backgrounds which is a huge problem for a game that's as fast as MvC. That's why only 2 stages were picked.

    Obviously Marvel looks better with drawn 2D Sprites. Now watch Arc systems make a Marvel or X-Men versus game. It would be cool but bittersweet because I prefer the Capcom Style gameplay for Marvel.

      yes they did, but they also made a presentation on gdc explaining the whole process, and dragon ball fighterz seems to run on an even simpler tecninique

    Considering how great the artwork is for this game, it's surprising the the actual in-game graphics looks so wonky.
    I still have faith that Capcom can patch the game to overhaul the in-game character models, and continue with DLC It's been too long since they've done anything and they can't just give up on such a highly requested game.

    Honestly I wish they had kept with the comic book style on the in game models. Imagine Venom with that "black ink" style from MVC3. I think he looks pretty cool in MVCI but he really needed to be able to just let loose with tendrils and color.

    i feel like one of the biggest things was what max said about the lighting and everything having a harsh white outline i agree i cant stand when everything including skin looks shiny and metalic its just wierd could of used more black outlines and flat colors no glossy shit

    Let's face it. The Marvel of today is a far shade of the Marvel of even 5 years ago, let alone when Marvel vs Capcom was conceptualized two decades ago. There are things Capcom definitely could have done better, especially with their side of the roster, but Marvel has a lot to answer for in this too. To them, this was little more than another opportunity to promote their brand and it shows.

    Ultron-Sigma Omega reminds me so much of Dark/Devil Gundam. love it. I wish there was more merch too. I have the X alt figure, I need a Zero. Might be my favorite Ultron design too.

    It's because in addition to being rim-lit in a world that isn't, they also have a set of lights that ignore the world and light the characters, and vice-versa (The characters's lighting is not integrated with the world they are in. Or integrated in any way.

    One of the problems when it got around the 3D models, is how far-off their figure was from their original concept,
    I mean take a look at spider man from example, sure he has some muscles from the sketch and his original figure, but when it got to the 3D part, he is WAY too bulky, another perfect example for this is hawkeye, i mean LOOK AT HIM, from a slim agile archer to a guy who eats steroids for breakfast, it looked like Chris dragged him inside a gym and did some boulder-punching sessions, they tried to apply " realistic figures and bulked up muscle details " to all the rosters, in which the outcome was extremely bad, The comic-styled render from the past game was already great, they should have kept it and only to Enhanced it a bit further, same goes for the effects as well, rather than changing the whole detail of the game.
    it looked like in this development, marvel was only behind the art-concept and capcom was behind in the 3D rendering, only they went " Cheap mode " and making the characters.. meh..

    In the games favor, what it absolutely does right is animations. The models may look like trash, but every single frame of movement is fluid and consistent which is super important for a game as fast as this.

    Capcom really needs to quit rushing development. Namco takes their sweet ass time when it comes to Tekken and Soul Calibur and they're usually great. Capcom was barely able to save Street Fighter v but I hope MvCI less than stellar performance taught them a lesson

      I wish they stuck with the comic look of MvC3. Honestly, that was such a great art style, and it really worked to the strength of the "bright fast paced combat" visual appeal of the series. This DARK AS MY SOUL REALISM look was really stupid and I can't see how anyone thought it wouldn't alienate the fanbase considering every MvC game up until now has taken the comic book art style. I get they were trying to "reboot" the franchise, which is why this wasn't MvC4, but I feel someone dropped the ball really hard on that art direction.

      It's more limiting in camera angles, maybe, but that only affects intros, victories and supers (and I guess the kinda generic Stone Storm animations). All the animations being used for the majority of the gameplay would look better. But it does take longer.

    shading can't fix what the model highlight texture wasn't done right...so the highlight are too bright, like metal material when it's should be darker.
