Having seen INXS multiple times, and having been fortunate enough to meet Michael Hutchence a couple of times in person, I can say that no one held an audience in the palm of their hand quite like he did. Amazing!
Not quite in Michael's league but another front man that oozed charisma with an amazing stage presence was Marc Hunter from Dragon - who also tragically passed way too young.

Great analysis, Michael Hutchence doesn't always seem to get recognised for his talent, but he was so talented and nuanced without showing off. Just the perfect amount of show to make the songs epic.

Yep,it was a brilliant day out. All the bands before & then INXS slayed it. I'm an Aussie who was 25 then & lucky enough to be living there at the time...from '90-'93. Wembley and the crowd vibe just blew me away. The best concert I have ever been to. 🤘🤘
This tour was the next evolution of INXS, still got a copy of this LIVE BABY LIVE show on VHS and watched it untold times. "Just Keep Walking" is still my favourite from 1980. It was just so different, that raw sound and switches ... 43 years on, it'll never sound old.
The band said in an interview that everything just clicked at this show. The right moment, right audience. Magic. You can see and hear how the band played off of the audience and vice versa.
It was at the end of a world tour, they were always sounded better live , saw them twice that year this summer xs concert had loads of great bands supporting that day❤ it

Maybe idolizing their lost bandmate, but I watched an interview with the surviving members. They said Hutchence never missed a note. Saw them in concert many times. They just had it, and Michael Hutchence was just magnetic. He left us far too soon. They were brilliant and amazing live.

The record company couldn’t work INXS out. The bands music just didn’t fit into any regular musical genre at all, because their music was so different. So the record companies made a new Genre just for. INXS. It’s called …Dance Rock

I met Kirk and Michael individually as they were walking around in the stadium. Great memories best Australian band of the 80-90s at the time.
Michael Hutchence is my forever rock god. The early days in Sydney pubs were the best. He reached down to me and pulled me up to kiss me ! OMG I will never forget those lips or those hands in my long blonde hair. I’m blessed ❤
Hutchence could put a little growl into the first word of a new verse. It's subtle, not overwhelming . Musicians can hear it. It makes them suddenly perk up. Their eyes widen, a head nod, a surprised look. They know.

Most of the Oz bandsof the 60s & 70s came out of live music venues - the big pub venues. (INXS came - mostly - out of the beach pub scene). So in that envirnmenty you always needed a great lead, to get up over the pub noise and to hold the attention of the crowd. The Oz pub scene was a hugley competitive environment from which so many earlier Oz bands and voices spawned; it was musical Dawinism. Oz bands weren't manufactured by some Stock Aitken & Waterman music factory, they had to thrive to survive. So after the sad death of Michael, the members tried a few things, before settling back into the music business. INXS' Melbourne -born saxophonist Kirk Pengilly married Australian ex-world surfing champion Layne Beachley and they set up house in the northern Sydney beachside of Manly.
I remember someone in the band saying that they never had to change the song key to suite Michael. Whatever the song & whatever the key he'd just sing it.

Late 1982. Inxs live at the Chevron in Melbourne. A night club that could only hold a few hundred but it was packed to the rafters. Great night. Back then they were rock/new age and went more rock when they released "Don't Change."

I cant believe you consider the lyrics to be so trivial. They aren't complicated its simplistic yet joyous in the manner in which you described his singing. You overlook he is also singing with bravado and fearlessness, singing with power and in doing so giving power. He is wishing wonderful sentiments to someone specifically while sharing it to anyone who is listening. Theres not a much more powerful gift you can give someone. He's being generous freely giving his love and wanting to lift everyone up in a most beautiful and powerful way in the manner of the strength of his voice way. He speaks of human frailty as well as the strength of the human soul. You really need to study lyrics more especially in your position. Know something about these people you critic and their philosophies. It will add an entirely new dimension to what you receive. This coming from a son whose mother reacheved her masters in music and was a classically trained singer and pianist. My grandfather sang and played piano in a jazz ragtime band on a Mississippi riverboat between St Louis and New Orleans during the 20s as well.

I cant believe you consider the lyrics to be so trivial. They aren't complicated its simplistic yet joyous in the manner in which you described his singing. You overlook he is also singing with bravado and fearlessness, singing with power and in doing so giving power. He is wishing wonderful sentiments to someone specifically while sharing it to anyone who is listening. Theres not a much more powerful gift you can give someone. He's being generous freely giving his love and wanting to lift everyone up in a most beautiful and powerful way in the manner of the strength of his voice way. He speaks of human frailty as well as the strength of the human soul. You really need to study lyrics more especially in your position. Know something about these people you critic and their philosophies. It will add an entirely new dimension to what you receive. This coming from a son whose mother reacheved her masters in music and was a classically trained singer and pianist. My grandfather sang and played piano in a jazz ragtime band on a Mississippi riverboat between St Louis and New Orleans during the 20s as well.
