Richard Hammond has historically not been the biggest fan of golf through the years, so we've put him and the DriveTribe M5 Touring up against the biggest golf RUclipsr in the world, Rick Shiels. Choosing the old Aintree F1 track as the battleground, can our 500+hp V10 estate car beat some golf bats and a small white ball? Trust us, this is a good one...

I feel this was a missed opportunity to use a Golf R or GTI so it would be Golf V Golf.
Needed James May in there for that.

A female friend of mine was going to buy a Golf R because it ticked all the boxes she needed. Unfortunately, those boxes were all about practicality and nothing to do with performance, so when myself and other friends managed to pick our jaws back off the floor, and explain to her how incredibly fast the Golf R is, it came as a complete surprise to her. Even more unfortunately, Russia invaded the Ukraine and fuel prices went through the roof, so our friend changed her mind. It's a real pity because we'd been looking forward to a ride in that Gold R.

This is probably one of my favorite car vs random thing challenges "Top Gear" has ever done
Love how Hammond keeps reminding himself not to crash! I can almost imagine a tiny Mindy on his shoulder, telling him not to.
Two of my favorite pastimes, and two of my favorite channels, coming together to entertain me. This is truly glorious.
Still remember on top gear when he said 'Oh no, I'm gonna catch golf from you two'. To the grand tour when he tells May and Clarkson hes been taking lessons lol

Randomly I decided to work out how much power the ball "has", it works out as about 55hp.
Golf ball mass = 0.04593 Kg (max), V = 340 kph, contact time with club is around 5 ms. Using E=0.5mv^2 and P=E/t gave about 55hp. Obviously it's very rough with a whole load of assumptions but I thought it was interesting and there might be 1 other person as sad as me who'd find this interesting. (Edited a typo)

Looks about right, except for the velocity. Rick Shiels has about 161mph ball speed which is 259km/h.
@@Haval1998 fair point, that brings it down to 32hp, I based the speed on a basic google search which gave me a figure of slightly above the world record :) D'oh! (I know nothing about golf!)
@@tom314 But still with 32hp, the power to weight ratio is off the chart in comparison to any hypercars.
@@Eren-da-Jaeger yep, with a power to weight ratio of about 700,000bhp per ton, but only for 0.005s then it's got the same power to weight ratio as a caravan :)
This very much had the vibe of one of Hammond's old "car vs. something silly" challenges. Nice.

He’s gone on record of the grand tour, to admit that he’s picked up golf despite his previous qualms with it.
Yet he admitted to taking Lessons.
