The only other Mario Party games to use elements from the main games are the N64 ones (especially MP1) using a lot of SM64-style sounds, graphics and concepts.

Mario Party 9 was the first game that brought me to the Mario series, all the way back in 2016. Despite never being able to play it, it still has a special place in my heart. As I just said, I never played it, so *take my "opinions" with a grain of salt*. It really seems like the car is the only thing holding it back. Literally everything else is top tier, as you said. That music gives me goosebumps. Minigames seem so fun and I'm so mad at NDCube for not bringing almost any of them back. And even then, car, despite not being able to be recieved so greatly, was a nice shake-up after 9 games (including DS) of pretty much the same core gameplay. NDCube just wanted to try something new. The only problem with that is that it wasn't well recieved... and they ignored everything and brought it back in MP10, which unlike 9 has almost no good things to compensate (soulless OST, no presentation at all, amiibo party mode that was basically just a square board and required expensive amiibo's to play, very little other extra modes, the only decent things are minigames and maybe bowser party although i don't have a lot of experience with it aside from, well, watching it on RUclips). So yeah, basically they wanted to try something new, and put their heart into it. The main mode being badly recieved overshadowed every other top tier aspect of the game. Except maybe Island Tour and perhaps Jamboree (we'll see for this one tho), they haven't put that much effort and heart in any MP game after that imo. I really like monologues, if you couldn't tell.
Funny. Because of Mario Party Jamboree, I took a look at the last Mario Parties (which I haven't played since DS). It's refreshing that someone is saying something positive about Mario Party 9. Nonetheless, I'm glad we're getting a classic Mario Party haha
Yes! I love this game! It’s amazing! The music, the character roster, the boards, everything!!! I’m glad people are starting to realize how good it is as of late! (And people who already loved it voicing *their* opinions too.)
I usually don’t comment on RUclips videos, but it’s super rare that I see someone giving Mario Party 9 a chance so i really appreciate it! It’s also my favorite entry and the one I grew up with as well. I feel like the era people grew up with definitely influences their Mario Party preferences, but it’s still important to give others a chance. 9 isn’t trying to be like it’s predecessors, it was something new and different that was needed after 8 very repetitive entries. The car was a very interesting mechanic and I always had opportunities to play through the minigames. I do think the car was best as a one-time thing though, which is why I have an easier time understanding the backlash on 10. 😅 But yeah, 9 was really creative for its time and it’s a Mario Party, after all! There’s no way to have a bad time with a Mario Party game unless you’re looking for something to ruin it. This was a great video, thank you for seeing the good this game has to offer! :)
Also you’re right about the visuals, they’re amazing! The minigames are also the most fun to this day. There are so many neat things about this game that just NEED more attention! 9 does a lot of things right but they get drowned out in the hate for the things that could be better.
*sniff* its peak... even though I do pretty much agree that the car can be a bit ehh alot of the Minigames and other bits of content in 9 make it quite great in my eyes. Good stuff
I was 10 when this game released, so I do have nostalgia for it & liked it as a kid. However I do think it unfortunately removed any form of players being able to show off their own unique strategies because of the linear board mechanics & that kind of destroys it for me. As a separate game mode I would love it. I still think that this game had a ton of love, charme & attention to detail put into it tho & it makes me sad that people overlook that aspect of the game, because it‘s unfair. I did prefer DS & 8 as a kid but 9 had way better minigames than 8!
As someone who looks back fondly on 8, 9 10, and star rush, I think that Mario party 9 is great. The boss fights each board has is definitely one of my favorite part of the game.
This game came out when I was 4 or 5, another family member got it for me and it was what introduced me to the mario franchise and I was obsessed with everything about it . Well sort of because mario kart wii was the first mario game I ever played. Everything about this game is so amazing, the minigames are fantastic apart from the luck based ones and the boards are so fun and the music is so fun as well. I still play it to this day and it holds a special place in my heart. Also the last thing I wanna say is that this game made me have an obsession with Birdo and I've loved her 2012, she's such a funny character and she makes me so happy whenever I play as her. Thank you for making this video and it's nice to see somebody else making a video about them loving this game because this game doesn't deserve the criticism that it got because at least Nintendo tried something different with this game instead of it being the same concept where you move around the board and collect stars.
9:17 DK’s Banana Ruins is mistakenly named DK’s Jungle Parkway, don’t know if it was intentional Also, finally someone defending this game, I wouldn’t call it my favorite, but it’s solid
I grew up playing this one so it’s my favorite. Nowadays just being objective I still think it’s good, I think the mini games are good and I really like the boss fights, the soundtrack is great and the care makes it easy for less experienced players so it’s more accessible when people want to play it with me
I think the best part in this game is that the mini-stars make the minigames matter more, since your victory will boil down to what you get in the minigames.
I really like Mario Party 9 for its visuals and minigames. Plus, the soundtrack is amazing too! My personal favorite one being "A Starlit Sky" (the constellations theme).
I feel the same way about this game. I feel like Mario party 9 is a completely underrated gem and is over shafted by 10 because of the Bowser mode. If I have to be honest I feel like this game is up there for the best boards in the series. In this game to me easily has the best mini games. Can I get people who do not like the car, but strategy is not completely thrown out the window, cuz sometimes you do need to make a critical choice between your dice blocks, add really think about your chances because there's no items to manipulate what you want, except for the slow block, and that itself is rare. Plus this game also gave a bosses in the series a huge glow up, honestly an s tier game. And I also have a really big nostalgia for this game because this was my fifth game in the series I played.
Bro I honestly liked Mario party 9 for 4 years but in 2016 when I started playing more of the older Mario party games at friends houses I kind of grew to hate Mario party 9 because of the car mechanic / mini Stars and some of the mini games being bland but somehow still like 10 because of the Bowser party, amiibo party and improved minigames I did grow up with 8 and DS though I can respect your opinion on 9 I think it's an ok game it has some okay / good mini games but in 2018 I gave away my copy of mario party 9 to my cousin since I was happy that Super Mario party was going back to the original roots and I was about to sell my copy of Mario party 9 for money but my cousin said how bad can it be and said just give it to me so I can try it for myself and take it out of your hands and so I did that's one of the biggest mistakes in my life since Mario party 9 can go for 40 to 60 dollars nowadays in the second hand market it's so funny and ironic that I used to agree with the classic Mario party fans for atleast a good 5 years since they also hated Mario party 9 back in the day.
As someone who grew up with this game, I completely agree! I remember whenever my family had guests over, my cousins/friends/siblings and I would always play this game! Also, not to be that guy, but 16:29, the only 2v2 minigame is Shell Soccer, which is also my favorite minigame of all time.
Im so happy to see more MP9 love! dare i'd say i enjoyed this game more than MP8 the bosses the minigames the different modes are all very cool goomba bowling is especially my favorite overall this game does not deserve this much hate but I do understand why the car mechanic sucks
Me: Thank you (MP9) for being one of my favorite childhood memories. MP9: I'm the most controversial game in the franchise, but i appreciate being an underrated gem!
Mario Party 9 is pretty much the perfect mario party in every aspect except board gameplay. Amazing minigames and top tier side modes, boss minigames, reverse minigames, being able to play with just 2 or 3 people, etc.
great video! Mario Party 9 enjoyment seems to be a growing sentiment among fans so it’s really cool seeing your perspective as somebody who really likes it, even if it’s not my favorite hahah
To me the music is the best part of the entire game, easily my favourite soundtrack in the series. Aesthetically it’s also gorgeous, the UI is well designed and looks nice, captain events are pretty fun, the story mode with cute little cutscenes is rad, and the minigame and mode selection is one of the better in the series history. The biggest problems are the fact the boards theming could be a bit better and the fact that the car just doesn’t match the original Mario Party format. Still though, it gets way too much hate cause the stuff it does well it does really really well.
Y'know, I'm not a huge fan of Mario Party 9, but I still think it's better than Mario Party 10, Island Tour, and Advance. Also you made some good points
Yo another MP9 enjoyer! 9 is also my favorite game in the series and literally all the things you mentioned in the video are the one of my reasons why I love this game so much! While it's nice to see the series getting back to it's roots, I still really love this game with it's boards (Magma Mine is like my favorite board in the series), minigames (Boss Battles are my favorite type of minigames) and side modes! Really great video, keep up the great work!
No seriously, I was playing Mario Part 9 just yesterday with friends the other day, and it was the most fun I've had playing a Mario party game in a long time. I Also played Star Rush not so long ago, and that might also be one of my favorites. Even after playing most of the classic games before I played 9, Mario Party 9 is still my favorite in the series.
I’m Glad that You gave Mario Party 9 credit than everyone says because along with that, Mario Kart 7, and New Super Mario Bros. U, I appreciate Cars 1 and 3, Planes 2, Monsters University, Treasure Planet, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Bolt, Meet the Robinsons, Peter Pan 2, Shrek Forever After, Rise of the Guardians, The Great Mouse Detective, The Rescuers Down Under, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Chamber of Secrets, Deathly Hallows Part 1, and On Stranger Tides.
I want to start off by saying I do like Mario Party 9 and I respect your opinion, but I do got some disagreeing to do here. The biggest sticking point for me is saying the game would have done way worse if it was like the older games, when I think the opposite would be more likely to be true. 8 was, for its time, the best selling home console entry in the franchise, second only to DS overall. The traditional formula had finally hit it bigger thanks to a bigger install base/a more casual focused ecosystem with the DS and Wii. So a more traditional 9, in my opinion, would likely have done better at least for sales. Super Mario Party is proof that opinions can change at the drop of a hat- loved at first, but despised over time. So there’s no way of knowing if a hypothetical 9 would have been received better. Otherwise, I can very much respect your stance on the single player, but as I reflect on Mario Party, what I play it for is a fun virtual board game, not a good adventure game. It’s basically the equivalent of getting ready to play Monopoly, but your group throws you into Dungeons and Dragons. And I do appreciate this game’s presentation, but I will say, looking back, it is one of the first signs of the stagnation of the franchise’s identity. So I do have to judge it accordingly. It has some very pretty visuals and great atmosphere, but played too safe in the Mario-verse’s bubble. But going back to the top, I do think this game is fun in its own right. It has solid minigames, the new mechanics are interesting, it has some fun side modes, it looks nice… it’s a really solid entry overall. I would probably put it closer to an 8, myself, but I think it is an overlooked and under appreciated gem for the series. But if you want my take on the best underrated Mario Party, that’s Star Rush. I loved that game, with all the cool modes it had.
That is actually insane. You played TWO songs from my Channel. MAD RESPECT. Uhhh...yeah if I am being honest, 9 had the most consistent good minigames and they are very fun. Ain't even nostalgia, I just had a lot of fun landing on Bowser Spaces and ruining my friends relationship. Jamboree hype!!
Did you play Mario Party Advance & The Top 100? I haven’t played them but it everyone says these games suck, I literally haven’t seen ANYONE defend them.
@@CaptainRillaboomArmenia lowkey I forgot those games existed when making that comment but I say top 100 was a test for superstars (which superstars did 1 million times better) and advance was just bad in general
Yeah, I’ve always had a soft spot for this one (although it’s definitely my nostalgia for watching minigame compilations talking). I get why people don’t like the cart system and I can definitely understand why people prefer the older games, but dammit! This one tried something new and I can’t help but respect it for that! Plus the minigames are still solid as heck and still hold up to this day
I always liked MP9 though I definitely see why a lot of others don't; the car approach just isn't for everyone. Ya get bonus points on this video for being a fellow Birdo player but lose them for not mentioning the stuff in the extra mode (unless I just zoned out during that and didn't realize); the one minigame in there where you've gotta stack the orbs and get at least 6 of the same color to clear them away was pretty fun from what I remember of it. Can never remember what it's called though for some reason
Finally the Mario Party 9 nation rising up. I honestly will defend Mario Party 9 because it has some of the series’s best side content, the best minigame selection, and also Boo’s Haunted Castle is hilarious to deliberately make your friend’s day ever worse. Also a lot of people don’t know this but NDCube actually consists of a bunch of former Hudson Soft members, so while the name was changed, they still had the same general developers who made Mario Party
Mario Party 9 doesn't deserve the hate it gets, but while the minigames are solid, I think Island Tour nailed the boss fights better **cough** bowser's ballistic blowout
MP9 is great and fun imo. The biggest flaw is relying on DK's board to unlock/buy everything in the game. There's no reason to grind on the other boards. Mario Party 6 has the same issue where you just play Solo Mode over and over to fill the star bank.
I haven't played many Mario Party games, (literally only 3 lol) but Mario Party DS is easily the best one for me. Yeah, I'm a little biased since it was my childhood Mario Party, but the boards are great, the minigames were great, the single player story mode was cool and exciting, and it was just a damn good time. I wish they would either remake it or at least bring back some boards from that game, idk why they've only touched the first 3 when there's so many games in the franchise.
Mario Party 9 was also my favo Mario Party. But i never played the board game cuz i diddn't cared about that as a kid lol. i always played the minnigames and i really enjoyed playing them as a kid
I didn’t hear anything on perspective mode. But other than that great review I too grew up with this game and watched a bunch of mini game compilations of the game
Imma be honest, I never understood the hate of the cars. Sure it's not the best game mechanic but I enjoyed it and think it was an interesting way to change it up! I agree this game isn't as bad as many people might say, not bad at all!
I mostly like the MInigame Mode in Mario Party 9 because it has such fun games such as Garden Battle, Choice Challenge and High Rollers. But Party and Solo Mode are even more luck-based than the Party Mode in all the older Mario Parties is.
To be fair, it's technically my favorite, but only because it's the only one I played, and even then, I feel like I'd rather try some of the others at some point. Or maybe it's just because I got sick of replaying MP9 so many times. I dunno, I honestly kinda abandoned it when it comes to replaying Wii games. I do remember enjoying the minigames the most, moreso than the boards themselves. That's probably why I spent more time playing the Garden mode with my sister, and some of the others too. In fact, the 1V3 minigames and most of the Bowser Jr. minigames were some of my favorites. Most of the boss minigames were really fun too, besides some - Bowser Jr.'s boss minigame is nothing but a luck-based romp, I never liked that one in terms of mechanics... which sucks, because in terms of concept and graphics, it looks quite cool, but that whole arena is sadly merely for show. You had this one, 8 and Island Tour? Yeah, no wonder you'd enjoy this one the most. Tho I heard 8 is underrated as well. I dunno, folks usually say "at least it's not 10". ...ok, I didn't even know about the rankings for Solo Mode. Uh, damn, that sure is an interesting challenge. Probably unintentional, but hey, it's a point regardless 😅 also it's kinda funny to talk about story progression in Mario Party 9, cus... there's not much of one? Within each board, I mean. There's setpieces and events, the whole thing feels like an adventure and a road trip... just not one with actual story. In that way, it's exactly like the levels of a 2D Mario game, for better and for worse. It would be interesting if each board had some sort of mini story, with a problem caused by Bowser or the area's boss that we need to solve, maybe even have that directly impact the gameplay, that would be cool.
For me personally, Mario Party 8 had better boards and standard Mario Party board rules, while Mario Party 9 had a better minigame selection with better motion controls. As someone who looks back fondly on 8, 9 10, and star rush, I think that Mario party 9 is great. The boss fights each board has is definitely one of my favorite part of the game.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO LOVES MARIO PARTY 9
9:17 DK’s Banana Ruins is mistakenly named DK’s Jungle Parkway, don’t know if it was intentional
Also, finally someone defending this game, I wouldn’t call it my favorite, but it’s solid
My favorite thing in my childhood is always watching Mario party 9 all MINIGAMES videos on RUclips Master difficulty
As someone who grew up with this game, I completely agree! I remember whenever my family had guests over, my cousins/friends/siblings and I would always play this game!
Also, not to be that guy, but 16:29, the only 2v2 minigame is Shell Soccer, which is also my favorite minigame of all time.
Im so happy to see more MP9 love! dare i'd say i enjoyed this game more than MP8
the bosses the minigames the different modes are all very cool goomba bowling is especially my favorite
overall this game does not deserve this much hate but I do understand why the car mechanic sucks
He didnt talk about my baby, the goomba bowling extras minigame 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Yes! This game is so well crafted and full of personality. So much more fun than the soulless feeling games
I can’t believe a lot of people say 9 is worse than 10 9 is way better than 10
great video!
Its far from being my favorite but I like it so much, especially the minigames, those were all-around bangers, even the luck based ones imo. 🔥
Mini games are funnnn
Mario Party 9 and 10 are underrated and over-hatted in my opinion.
i love mario party 9,it was my childhood game,im still playing it and having fun
god i remember watching those mario party 9 minigame videos as a child
playing this w the boys back in the day was goated
If they ever return the car gimmick, I think it should be used as a side mode
Island tour in my opinion it's also good but Bowser's tower underlings are so scary
In my opinion there isn’t a bad mario party (yes including 10 cause I love that game tbh)
@CaptainRillaboomArmenia I kinda like MP Top 100 but I will say, I only played for the mini games cuz the board was genuinely awful
Mario Party 9 has always been my favorite (it's definitely entirely because of nostalgia)
Only if this video was 1 week later he will have realized that this game is a little worst than jamboree
Lets do this one day
I grew up with 9 and 8. They are both great, and in my opinion, 9 has some of the best minigames in all the series
20:51-21:14 MatPat: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!
9 is my second fav, behind Super imo, but tysm for highlighting it! The car mechanic is pretty good imo and the minigames are excellent.
Mario party 9 was my first mario party so... yea, i love it too
Mario Party 9 doesn't deserve the hate it gets, but while the minigames are solid, I think Island Tour nailed the boss fights better **cough** bowser's ballistic blowout
MP9 is great and fun imo. The biggest flaw is relying on DK's board to unlock/buy everything in the game. There's no reason to grind on the other boards.
Mario Party 6 has the same issue where you just play Solo Mode over and over to fill the star bank.
I enjoy Mario Party 9.
Bro came back
I wonder what you think about Mario Party 10 then. The way way more hated entry in the Mario Party car games
I'd love to make a review on Mario Party 10 as well! I think it could provide a nice contrast to this one...
Mario Party 9 is a good Mario Party, and I'm tired of pretending that it's not. The internet can't hivemind me into hating this one. :^)
I'm also playing today MP9, exclusively Solo Mode because i want to get all endings hahahaha
Hottake: I think Island Tour is one of the best Mario Party games out there, imo.
It's my most nostalgic Mario Party, that's for sure!
@@AlbertBoris I can see that.
It sure is underrated 😄
Great take, inlove mario party 9, it was my first one, still my favorite.
A man with good taste
Perspective Mode is the last thing I talk about in the video, shortly before the "Conclusion" segment!
@@AlbertBoris oh. I guess i missed it😅
Imma be honest, I never understood the hate of the cars.
But Party and Solo Mode are even more luck-based than the Party Mode in all the older Mario Parties is.
finally a fellow mp9 fan! i wouldn’t call this my favorite, but i did enjoy this game!
EVERY MARIO PARTY 9 FAN GANG UP TO SUPPORT THIS GAME LETS MAKE #MARIOPARTY9 REAL
There is one 2vs2 minigame and it’s shell soccer
Great video. Im litlitterly watching during lunch period at my high school lol
Call it nostalgia bias but honestly mario party 9 is my favourite videogame of all time
you forgot to talk about the tetras game in mario party 9. but other than that I totally agree with all of your statements.
Thanks for making the video, I thought I was the only person that thought mario party 9 was good.
