- Jasper here. I've been seeing mentions regarding FOMO, or the fear of missing out, often throughout the Splatoon community. This video discusses FOMO in Splatoon 3 and what can been done about it. Also, I usually upload on Fridays or Saturdays but Pokemon Scarlet/Violet is coming out on Friday so I uploaded this video a little early.

An unlikely idea I had is this:
When the new season starts your old catalogue is replaced with the new one, and if you finish that one, it gives you back the previous catalogue from where you left off.
This can go on for an indefinite amount of time, and they could even rerun the old catalogues after the game’s support ends.
That is a really cool idea!
I really hope they do indefinitely rerun the catalogs and maybe even splatfests and big runs after updates end. With such high snail prices for star upgrades, getting only one per level like in 2 just won't be enough

I think it'd be best to make out-of-season catalogues available as an additional option for the Shell Out Machine that doesn't get the First Play of the Day discount.

Part of me agrees that having some unlocks down to chance rather than effort kinda stinks, but I think the danger in implementing any sort of catch up mechanic is that it no longer feels rewarding to get something cool or to max the catalogue if you can just do it at your leisure. One person's fomo is another person's excitement at a truly exclusive reward

That's my thoughts too, and I also want to golden banner (over 300 hrs no golden banner sad dayz).
Japanese website already confirmed that seasonal catalogues rotate at the same season. If you miss Drizzle Season 2022, you can still get it again on Drizzle Season 2023. Which Drizzle Season you'll get to unlock by 2023 nobody knows yet
really? That’s sounds good in paper, but kinda sucks you’ll have to wait roughly a year in order to get them again. Which website did you find this info on?
Honestly I think the catalog is fine as is and having some exclusives is pretty cool. I've completed the catalog 3 times and that's with me taking long breaks in between. My issue is with the gacha seed since having it predetermined results in players having no chance at all to obtain the Seasonal Banner or Title even if you decided to pour a ton of hours into the game.
I was expecting to disagree because I like a healthy amount of fomo and exclusive items. Having previous things be in simple mystery boxes is such a good idea though. That would be amazing imo, great solution.
The worst thing is that you don't have a chance sometimes to get the rare rewars from the machine, there's a seed and it just imposible to get them in time. I need 346 rolls to get the rare title of this season

Maybe a good idea would be to let you choose a previous catalogue you haven't completed every time you finish the seasonal one, but you'd have to play it from the start of the catolouge
I think a good way could also be to occasionally have some of the Drizzle Catalogue rewards to be able to be bought in Hotlantis, like maybe have one or two available at a time that can’t be bought again, kind of similar to how only one locker color at a time will pop up and after it’s bought it won’t show up again for example
I’ve heard you will be able to order the catalog gear after the season is over by finding someone with said gear and getting Murch to get it for you. I’m sure they will bring back the old seasons once the game gets its final major update similar to Splat 2 and how old monthly exclusives in salmon run came back into rotation.
I feel like the best way for the shell-out machine is to have the .3 and .1 percent chance seasonal titles and banners be around for the whole game and you just get 1 of the available seasonal titles and banners from the current and previous seasons
Honest to god: After getting the Dab icon and sat through splatfest, I just got such terrible burn out that I actively took the game out, put it in its cover and then locked it up. The game was wrecking my attention span to the point I couldn't find time to do other things.
I wasn't able to afford the game until mid October and then had to take a two week trip somewhere else because of a family issue - my catalog is barely level 40 and I just want the dab 😩
Funny you mention community days - both Dratini Classic and Teddiursa were during the aforementioned trip - didn 't get a shiny on Teddy day and already had a few shiny Dragonite 😩😩😩
Depending on how much time you have, you could get 10 catalog levels a day for the weekends (40 total), and you can probably get the other 20 levels slowly over the weekday

I've felt so burnt out with trying to keep up with getting catalog levels before it expires that I had to take a month off from playing and only just got back into getting levels again during this recent splatfest.
The only problem with this is that it sucks for those grinders and people who got the dab(etc..) just to be bought in a shell out machine
The most problematic issue is the seasonal banner and title from the shell out machine. Just based on the seed for every account on sendou, they can be a few hundred to thousands away. Even a 200 pull is equal to 15mil coins. That's not okay.
EXACTLY! I think I might be lucky to at least get the titile within the next 5 pulls, but the banner? I won’t get it for another 400+ rolls! 💀
And like you said, others have said that they are literally thousands of pulls away from getting the seasonal stuff. There are ways to earn money faster but it takes awhile to truly get enough to get the money needed for these pulls. I just really hope this stuff is still obtainable in the future
0:36 - Exactly my case. I got my copy and the Online subscription relatively late, and right now I'm grinding to try and get to level 100. Right now I'm at level 59, with today's goal being 61. I'm trying to up 7 levels a day right now (it's being hard, because of time, my win rates, and the fear of failing during a match). A friend of mine has tried helping me sometimes, but I'm scared to ask their help too much.
I'm still running just because I want the dab emote, and me trying not to limit my friends options when we want to go all with the same emote in splatfests, or just when we're playing together.
DRG’s solution to FOMO is just to making it impossible to miss out, season cosmetics just get moved to the other cosmetic obtainment methods.
I'm worried about the shell out machine, I'm very unlucky and haven't had luck getting gold and silver.
I think the better solution rather than affecting the shell out machines odds is that your additional catalogs have a chance of giving you the unattainable stuff. And it would absolutely ease fomo because you'd never miss out, you'd always have the opportunity. If you put in the time.
If you could just purchase these things, I feel like they wouldn't be as cool. Getting the dab isn't that hard for example, people have done it in 2 days and you have 3 months. If you just give it to anyone, it looses it's coolness factor. (which already doesn't even feel as cool at this point because I find most people have the dab). Exclusivity adds to the coolness to things.
I mean yeah, I think its stupid if the shell-out banners and titles were to disappear, but it should be fair game for the rest to not be available. If you play once a day for the 7500 bonus, and a bit during the splatfest, you'll be there in no time
If they miss out that sucks but it really doesn’t seem like that bad of a problem just a personal thing for those kinds of ppl
Most multiplayer games themselves are FOMO's, but I think having previous season rewards as shell-out prizes or mystery box prizes with even lower odds to get (rarer) would be fine enough at the very least.
They should implement a pity system on the Shell-out machine like in Genshin with their character banners. There’s no reason for it to be unreasonable to borderline impossible to get the seasonal banner and title.
Splatfests themselves are the definition of FOMO
Here’s two ideas to stop FOMO for Splatoon 3 I came up with:
1. If you finish the current season and still have a previous season unfinished, instead of receiving mystery boxes, you keep going with the previous catalogue.
2. Getting both super bonuses in a day of Salmon Run will give random Salmon Run gear.
I really hope Nintendo implements these.
Maybe there will be a way to buy them? Like a category in melodys shop where you can buy past emotes and titles for increased prices? Maybe they could add table turf cards and other stuff too?
I got the game later than others, I waited for the price drop and got it for $40. Yeah I missed some stuff, but I like the way it is. I like that people who play a lot get more stuff.
i like to believe that you can continue the catalog of a previous season once you finish the current one. maybe you could get seasonal title and banner from the lucky boxes of the (current) 2nd catalog

From wht i heard, u are able to get the catalog stuff after it ends, but it would be in shops (could be wrong, but then again seems fair since as u said, not everyone is able to play or are late)

My theory is, there is a catalog section in the status menu right now, but when you press a on it nothing happens. My theory is that once the new catalog comes out you will then have multiple catalogs to choose from. You can only have one at a time though. That's at least what I hope will happen because I really don't wanna grind to level 100 again for the next catalog
what i think they should do is have the catalog be different everytime but either after that catalog goes out of season or after all updates, they are available in the Shell-Out Machines, or Harmony or something else and for the gold banner and super duper lucky lucky duck they are available in the shell out during that season (the gold banner and sdlld are available every drizzle season)
Having previous season's rewards be available in the gatcha reminds me of the division 2 (at launch, I don't know how things may or may not have changed since wony released) where they'd have events where you could unlock cool cosmetics but once the event ends, they'd get thrown into the lootbox pool making it still possible but not as easy to get everything. There was still one fomo thing where you got an exclusive reward from getting everything from the event before it ends and that's the sole issue in what was otherwise a surprisingly fair lootbox system.
Ultimately it worked because the event was a way to get the new items faster and more consistently which gave a point to partaking it in while players too late for it weren't left out for the most part. And having the previous season rewards in the gatcha accomplishes the same effect. Grinding the catalogue is worth it but you're not out of luck if you don't have the time for it.
I have a full time job and other games I want to play. I want the dab emote but I simply don’t have the time to grind out the game constantly. I’ve made it a daily routine to at least get the daily win bonus, the issue is on days where I simply don’t feel like playing Splatoon 3 it can get frustrating fast.
All I need is one win, then I’ll have a bad game or two, since I don’t really want to play the game at the current moment I’ll get frustrated, said emotion will then make me play worse, the cycle continues.
I’ve actively shouted at the TV while playing Splatoon 3 in frustration, even thrown my controller at the couch a couple of times. Never once did I do this playing Splatoon 2, the catalog is making me a more toxic player.
I’m not a competitive video game player, I play splatoon purely casually. I enjoy this game the most when I’m relaxed, in the mood and playing with friends. The catalog and FOMO is making me force myself to play the game everyday for at least one win, which goes against how I play video games in general.
Currently I’m level 91 so I might just barely be able to squeak out the emote, I’m not sure I can take another catalog tho. It’s too mentally taxing. Any more might just make me snap and never want to play the game again, I seriously love this game but maybe I won’t anymore. Who knows.
My luck with the shell-out machine is so bad it's not even funny.

I talked about this in my review of the game, well in a small part. I really dislike it when games have FOMO. It turns me off from playing the game.
Having less people with the dab emote is just natural selection. Nature is healing
Better then Splatoon2 atm, as they kept adding new things to unlock.. I felt forced to keep coming back too often!
I hope that the banners and titles stay at least. I haven’t gotten that lucky duck one either.
Or once you finish the current catalog of this season you could ask Harmony one of the previous catalog that you didn't get/finish or a catalog that give you mystery boxes every 10 level
I think there will be a capsule decorated with stickers or something that can be earned from grizzco and/or the shell-out machine
And these special capsule give out previous season's catalouge rewards, with a one percent chance of giving the seasonal banner and title from previous seasons.
If this were a freemium game each time you spend money the odds would go up to encourage spending.
Would have been nice if that was the case here. Even if it goes up by 0.01% each time you roll, after 90 it would be at 1% which is a lot more reasonable
I really don't think they'll just say "fuck you you don't get this shit anymore cuz you're late". what I think might happen is that, if a new player gets the game on the chill season, they'll get the first season's catalog first, and once they get everything in it, instead of receiving another one with boxes every 10 levels, they get the chill season catalog instead, catching up with everyone else that's already on it.
either way, if they don't do anything, they'll have to expect the community to get pissed off about it
I grinded the game a lot at release and got the catalog to 100 in about a week or two. After that I got burnt out very quickly. Locking stuff away from players who got the game late, like as a christmas present for example, isn't something I like at all. I also don't have the gold card or lucky duck title, and I highly doubt I'll be able to in time. Guess i just have to live with that... hope they make the stuff available permanently at some point. Everyone should be able to get stuff like the studio headphones, fake contacts, dab, and triple decker shades
They should just do what Halo: Infinite does and allow you to choose from any of the existing catalogues at any time and have your progress count towards whichever one you've chosen to be currently active. It completely eliminates the FOMO aspect by allowing you to work towards previous rewards or get the new ones instead if you so choose.
Tbh i think for me its enough time the only thing im very afraid of is summer season bc if i miss around a month out i prob have to play multiple rounds a day

They give you a huge amount of time, also anyone who cares enough to get all the items most definitely will be able to.
I am also think that they should just lower the odds significantly on the machine like being a 0.05% chance or something, extremely rare but it’s there type of things
I think the catalogue items not being available for a while is perfectly fine. I’m not a very active player and have completed the catalogue three times over. The banner on the other side is very unfair. I’ve done the seedcheck thing and won’t get the banner for another 3000 capsules.
When some dedicated player gets every normal banner and title they can get from the machine, would they then have a higher chance to get better stuff, or would they just start getting coins instead of banner/title? Unlikely, but it would be nice.
I mostly just want to be able to get a banner that changes the title color that isn't one of the single-color banners

I hate the season rewards, splatoon 2 was so special idk why they had to do this. I love splatoon but like to play other games so I'm forced to play even on days I don't want to.
How about selling old catalogue exclusives (emotes, banners, titles....) at Hotlantis?
I'm hopeing they don't pull a doom eternal where it has seasons like this with cosmetic items, but they will come back 1 last time and if you miss the last chance event, you buy it with real cash.
It's not actually incredibly unlucky to not receive the banner with hundreds of hours of gameplay! .1% is a 1 in 1000 chance which means on average it will take 1000 rolls to acquire it. That would be 30,000,000 cash. If you subtract 90 * 25,000 for the daily discount the amount goes down to 27.5 million cash. (We didn't even get the full 90 this season because the season started later into September). In my case I earned 120 conch shells from the two splatfests so you can subtract another 3.6 million from the total, bringing it down to 22.9 million cash to reach the average amount of pulls necessary.
I don't know about everyone else but I have about 450 hours on splatoon 3 so far, not counting the time I spent playing a friend's account because they were too busy to max out their catalog, and I got nowhere near 23 million cash. Most of the cash went to other purchases as well, since there's gear to buy and upgrade and it's not exactly cheap.
On top of that that's only to reach the average amount. Meaning if you manage this nearly impossible feat you'll still only get the banner if you're lucky or average. The potential to be unlucky and need 1200, 1500, 2000, or even more rolls to get the rare banner exists.
Simply put, if you are feeling FOMO for the banners, do not. It is designed so that you will miss out on most of the seasonal banners. It is an exceedingly rare event compared to the amount of attempts you get to make toward it. Even if you got lucky on this first banner I suggest you steel yourself for potential disappoint over the next few seasons as your luck is very unlikely to continue.
I have over 400 hrs in Splat3, got up to S+ rank and all that, ground out splatfests decently hard, still don't have the banner or title, it's ridiculous that it's not guaranteed after you complete 2 catalogs or something IMO. There needs to be a mechanism to guarantee it if you get unlucky, it's crazy there isn't.
Also the mystery boxes on the second catalog and on are awful, I wish they had better stuff for only coming along every 10 levels.
I have 180+ hours and played a ton of Splatfest for conch shells. My seed doesn't favor the seasonal title/banner. Sad, but at least they're not something I might use.

Legit every other game has a battlepass, this one has a much simpler version that’s even easier to grind, so if they miss out, then they miss out.

The whole point, is that, these items, are seasonal. Besides it’s very easy to get most of the stuff other than the seasonal banner just by playing the game. The seasonal banner is supposed to be rare and exclusive. If it wasn’t rare then people wouldn’t care as much. That’s literally the point lmao

Literally stressing bc I wanna get the dab emote cuz it's funny as hell but I'm currently at catlvl 75 and I don't think I'm gonna make it with only 11-10 days left. Like that's only 2-3 levels a day but life comes first. So yhea I really wish it'd give people the option to finish up the progress we've already made, especially when we're over halfway finished with it
I think you’ll be able to make it. You get 7500 catalog xp for your first win each day which is almost 1 level. Playing Anarchy gives more catalog xp than turf war so I suggest you play that. Good luck!

I've completed 4 catalogues. I play half an hour 4 days a week. Just like Fortnite battle pass, you gotta put the work into it in my opinion.

I'm fine with Catalogs because they are free and not time gated by weeklies (yes they still timegated by play time thou).
But honestly I feel this, I'm starting to hate F2P games in general, they all turn out to be a total chore to play and everyone just has to have a worse version of Fornites battle pass.
Im tired of battle passes and f2p games because they always end up sucking the fun out of the game for me. Here's hoping that you will be able to rerun catalogs at some point.

It's irritating, I've had no luck, and lack money in game at times.
This is why i quit all battle pass games, at least the xp in splatoon is okay compared to other free to play games

I run 5 main weapons fully kitted out, if could be a similar case or he just likes a lot of them lol. And sometimes just for funsies ill run a random weapon for the heck of it just to see if I'm good at it or not.

honestly this isn’t that big a problem, the shits only cosmetic and effects zero gameplay
I did the daily 5k pull every day and got about 40 conches both splatfest plus misc 30k rolls so in total I had a little below 200 rolls...
At 0.1% chance that means I had an 18% (32% for the title) chance to get it putting a lot into it... which is way to low for putting so much into it over the whole season.
It will be a real shame if they are just gone with such low luck to get them.
I think people wrongfully live with the idea that they should obtain absolutely everything. It is very much ok for some stuff to remain locked behind seasons and pure luck. Where's the happiness in getting that super rare title/ banner, if everyone will get it.
Eh, I disagree. FOMO is kinda the point of the catalog and it isn’t super impactful.
FOMO are something only weak minded individuals have. None tangible things should not control an individual such as FOMO as that tells that individual priorities are not correct. Plus we all know after two years of updates Nintendo will have everything available for players to require later.
I generally don't fear missing out on stuff, but it still annoys me when a game basically tells me I need to go out of my way to grind for something. If I wasn't already so into splatoon 3 that I can spend all day playing it, I would've saw the dab being level 98, share a few profanity filled comments about battle passes then move on with my life like it's already a lost cause.

The problem you're trying to solve is a result of our culture of entitlement, as well as the "built in fomo" which is actually just good game design. It's not an issue. Every game is like that. Every developer does what they can to get people to play, which often means exclusivity.
The dab emote is a reward for being an early adopted.
The people who play the game more deserve exclusivity/clout.
I mean I guess, but not everyone is an adult who plays these games and can't get their parents to buy for them until the holidays, not everyone has free income to spend $60 on a video game, some people also have lives outside of playing video games, I think there should be a balance. Some exclusivity for players who put the time in but also for newbies to have a chance, my hope is that the catalogues return later down the lifespan of the game to give the players who missed out in the beginning a chance. I think when you pay for a game, you are pretty entitled to what the game has to offer.
Fomo systems are inherently toxic towards their playerbase as they effectively punish people who either can't play the game either enough or at all for any reason.

Being able to earn something is not punishing those who don't have it, especially when we are talking about video games, and especially when it's about cosmetic items that have 0 effect on gameplay. The pro players who put in the time deserve something cooler than me because I definitely don't play the game as much as them lol.
