this video was taped during the Queens Silver jubilee where they performed it on the river outside of the Queens celebration of her coronation where they got dragged off their boat by the police and arrested/ attacked also probably one of their biggest moments in their career
i was 16 then loved the song hated the monarchy.....like all my mates too hated monachy and loveded the sex pistols ...and i still do hate the monarchy
This song and the incident in the ferry on the Thames, where they played live on full noise as they floated past the jubilee celebrations, helped to make their career and did not hurt it in anyway. The manager, Malcolm McLaren, wanted them to be controversial and to be banned and cancelled, his strategy worked and the 'Never Mind The Bollocks' album rocketed to the top of the charts, despite having a radio ban.
In 76 when this song came out (and the mid 70's when they had their existence) the UK was experiencing massive unemployment(especially the youth felt hopeless) and there was massive trash strikes where you would have mountains of rubbish everywhere. Been a Sex Pistols fan for ages , the footage here was taken from 1980-The Great Rock n Roll Swindle(which as a previous commenter mentioned also included the jubilee boat performance) however as i haven't seen the movie in years i cant remember what the burning letters yoy asked about represented.
E2R…Elizabeth Regina, the second. Regina is Latin for Queen. This song was so exciting at the time. My parents hated them, so…😉 Edit…it still excites the fuck out of me
I was 10 and totally unaware of this song at the time. Came to love it during my teenage years. Nearly half a century later? His words were curiously prescient. There is, indeed, no future in England's dreaming. Brexit anyone?
This song pretty much made their career. The Sex Pistols are absolute icons. I love seeing ‘Anarchy in the UK’ sprayed on walls (quite a lot at the moment!).
This song got to No1 in the British Charts with God save the Queen.Think about that. The Sex Pistols were the Alpha and Omega of Punk Rock..Nobody came close.
This song hit everything right on the nail in 1976-77 when it came out. Also, shame on u if u didnt hear the Sex Pistols before now😄 This was basically the mood in Europe at the time or came out.
Absolutely. it was a statement about how the Queen was being exploited mercilessly for tourist revenue and Bread and Circuses type distraction during a time of economic and social upheaval.
True. When they sing "They made you a Moron" & "No future for you", they're not talking about rhe Queen, they're talking about the youth of England. Things were bleak in the UK in those days.
Banned on TV. Banned on the radio. Banned from playing live (venues, on discovering it was the Pistols that would be playing, would close down the gig). Conservative protests directed at them everywhere they went (Johnny Rotten, the singer, was even attacked and slashed with a razor). Despite all this they became the biggest band in the UK. And their musical influence can still be felt today.
The song was banned from TV and radio in the UK .Also banned from major record stores. Actually got to No 1 in the UK chart but was kept off the top by the powers that be who manipulated record sales that week and it was put at Number 2. Singer and drummer were attacked in the street after this was released on Virgin Records . A&M records were to originally release it but sacked the band and destroyed all but nine of the original pressings which were given to A&M employees when one of their offices closed. These nine copies are worth around 20.000 each now .
You gotta see The Filth and the Fury. It's a wonderful documentary about the Pistols that covers their rise and fall and gives a great rundown of the culture and atmosphere of England at the time.
E 11 R, Elizabeth Regina the second, the queens reginal name. By the way loads of Brits can’t stand the royal family, the pistols just tapped into this in spectacular fashion.
Hi my friend. Stumbled upon this video. The song came out in 1977 DURING the queen's silver jubilee celebrations. All the fireworks are from that, mixed into the video. Including the 'E II R' letters on fire. It means ' Elizabeth Regina the 2nd'. This Elizabeth was the second Queen named Elizabeth, in England's history. Ye, fukkkking love this song to this day. I was 12 years old when it came out, and never heard it at the time because it was banned from radio and television. Although when it came out, it did get a short article on our national news programme. Yes Paul Cook the drummer got beaten up because of this song, and Johnny Rotten the singer had a bottle smashed into the side of his head and a stilletoe blade jammed into his knee. He struggled himself to hospital after the attack, and he says the first thing the nurses did was call the police. Who turned up and arrested him, on suspicion of causing affray. No it did not harm their career.
It's not celebrating "no future", it's highlighting that at the time young people didn't have much opportunities because the UK was in a right state economically and socially.
4:11 - It's E II R (E 2 R)... or Elizabeth 2nd Regina - 'Regina is Latin for 'Queen' E II R is commonly printed on things in UK which are public services, like Post Office mail boxes, Police badges on helmets, etc... If the tradition is carried on we'll probably soon be seeing C III R on public services (Charles 3rd Rex)
This was "prevented" from getting to number 1 in the UK chart by the authorities. It was outeslling Rod stewart by 2:1 yet surprisingly stalled at no2. Cant have this getting top spot smack bang in the middle of the queens silver jubilee. shame, its a fantastic anthem and in my mind WAS top of the chart
This is a welcome change to yt'ers jumping on the clicks 'n' likes bandwagon even if it was a happy accident. I had nothing against Liz as a person but I'd rather the rest would go away especially Harry's gold digger
What you have to remember there are a lot of people in the U.K. about 45% of the population who.are not monarchists. I was 16 in 1977,we have this right and privilege nonsense that still persists.
I started listening to punk in 78, so the Sex Pistols sound old school to me. Tame compared to some stuff I was into...like the Clash's "Washington Bullets"...or the Dead Kennedys' satirical song "Kill the Poor"...or Poly Styrene and X Ray Spex singing "Oh bondage up yours!" That kind of punk is still happening today, it just gets no press because (you guessed it) the message is a little too pointed. For contemporary punk, check out Fucked Up, and Crystal Axis, to name just two great bands. BTW, I'd love to see you do a reaction video on Crystal Axis, my favorite of recent punk bands...hard to find their music, but a quick RUclips search turned up a remixed version of "Black AF." (Or maybe they have songs on Soundcloud or Bandcamp?)
THE GREAT ROCK AND ROLL SWINDLE. I was a punk rocker we were REBELING AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT AND THE system the GOVERNMENT was taking everything away..

Anyone who supports royalty in any way shape or form is saying that they and their children are 2nd class humans and less deserving of health, wealth and happiness. That said she was a devoted wife and cousin to her husband.

EIIR is the royal cypher which appears on official government buildings, documents and property. It stands for Elizabeth Regina 2nd
This song is literally a punk rock anthem

Lead singer Johnny Rotten (john Lydon) paid tribute to the queen when she died (he has mellowed somewhat) 😂 E R II means Elizabeth Regina the 2nd.
I know, all punks look alike :^) That's actually the manager getting dragged off.
This song was number one on the British charts but the space was left blank. It wasn't acknowledged by the music industry or the press
As Johnny Rotten once said
'Next question.....??!'
E.R II refers to Elizbeth II Regina, Latin for Queen Elizabeth II
