The sex pistols claimed they would destroy popular music ....... I hope they are happy now when anyone can get famous and talent and ability mean nothing
Quite a compliment from Noel Gallagher, who is not a bad songwriter, singer and musician himself. It's quite obvious that most of Oasis's early stuff had a Pistols influence, in addition to the Beatles (the latter of which only seemed to be mentioned by the music press). Even more respectful from Gallagher, given that Lydon slagged off Oasis back in the early 2000's.
First time I heard "Cigarettes and alcohol" I loved it. I loved it partly because it certainly had that Pistols swagger and the vocals had the snottiness and arrogance of John Rotten.
I don't know why Glen Matlock is written out of the story. He wrote and played as the only capable musician, and there's this story that 3-chords played badly Steve Jones played lead AND bass and only he and Cook were "musicians"? Riiight! Thank Chris Spedding too. ;?))
Glen is credited for writing songs. But I do not think he was involved in the recording process (at least not for the actual studio album) and oddly enough Sid’s bass on Bodies is “buried” somewhere in the song... so he even has more work recording on that album than Glen lol...
He he.. I was 9 years old singing 'I'm a lazy sod' at the top of the stairs, with my Mother at the bottom waving the wooden spoon saying 'what did you say'.. great stuff.
Punk toughened everything up again when it was all getting very safe and tired. Acid House did a similar thing in 1987/8 when pop music was cringingly tedious. These days perhaps the problem is that anyone can put a tune streaming services, and there's so much music that's there's no real mutuality or fashion anymore that can be upset by bands like the Sex Pistols?
Chris Thomas gives it away: the Sex Pistols "sound" (what we heard on the album) was Jones on bass playing the same base chords of the riff octaves lower. The sound engineer in another vid said Jones played like clockwork, on time and never missed a chord, have him on the bass and voila, perfect synchronicity of bass and lead harmonics, "thats where the power comes from.

Surprised to see Rollins celebrating the Pistols as he was never all that complimentary about them previously, referred to them as hairdressers or something. He and some other punks like John Doe for example considered The Damned more important. Someone will have to explain that one to me. The Damned made a great first album but from there it gets spotty. Some good things here and there but I could never get totally get into them and I've tried.
I don’t know which specific quotes you’re referring to, but it’s possible they (esp. John Doe) were referring to the relative importance of the bands *in the development of the LA punk scene*. There were a bunch of oddballs making noises before, but The Damned shows at The Whisky in 1977 had a galvanizing effect on L.A. punk not unlike the effect the famous Pistols show had in Manchester. I’d be shocked if either Doe or Rollins actually meant that The Damned were better or more important in the larger scheme of things. By the way, you can get an idea of the effect of those Damned shows in the Germs/Darby Crash biopic What We Do Is Secret, which includes what is by all accounts a pretty accurate depiction of The Damned’s impact.
People talk about Nevermind, Definitely Maybe etc as generation defining records, but they both fall into the bargain bucket when you compare it to NMTB. The greatest debut album by any band ever.
@@seanmcglynn3638 John Lydon was in the Sex Pistols and PIL... Lou Reed went solo, so that doesn't really count... Joy Division became New Order... I'd agree with you on that one.
I dont think that John hated the Beatles either, really. He just liked to say he hated things that you werent supposed to hate. Old stuff. Like his "I hate Pink Floyd" t-shirt. When in reality he actually liked Pink Floyd. Quite a lot as well.
I've got an original bollocks album bought from the shop in Nottingham, where it was removed from the window after a policeman deemed it an offensive word. Oh no it isn't!
John's looking a little worse for ware - hope his health is OK. This feels like its only part of a bigger documentary - certainly the influence was wider... why isn't Mani or Ian Brown on here? And Liam who still cites the Pistols as his number one musical influence (Lennon was more personal on him).

terry miller I’m aware of what they did and why they were making that music but it’s not my favourite music anymore, I digged the pistols when I was a teen and bought NMTB but my interest was peaked more by bands like Genesis, floyd, supertramp, the very bands they were crusading against for being commercially successful etc, then Lydon became what he supposedly hated when PIL gained success and he was living the good life in LA, he called bands like the stones irrelevant for doing exactly what he ended up doing. Their music was of its time and is forgettable to me now, but I still listen to a lot of progressive rock which has stood the test of time.
There are important bands that are seminal, and then there are bands that directly force a change onto society itself. I don't think anyone can dispute that the Sex Pistols were the latter.

I can recall that I was 18 when I first heard the entire record almost 20 years after its first release and I couldn't believe my ears because it sounded better and more relevant than anything else at the time (and ever since). It's unreal that it was performed by a former juvenile thief who even nicked his gear, a spotty unhealthy looking Irish dude and an electrician from a brew factory.
David Geffen - his first published artist was Mike Oldfield. He and David have since parted ways, but the legacy remains. Geffen has become an advocate for harsh police state laws enacted in the U.K. and U.S. Geffen will be remembered when citizens overthrow, and will be given a just punishment.

Middlesborough Rock Garden, October-ish 1977 under the name Acne Rabble. Don't remember it much, it was a stopping off point after a Boro match. There were me and a couple of mates that got separated and we ended up at the Rock Garden. We were about 15 sitting in The Acklam with our flares and football scarves tied round our wrists an fairly long hair, all these punks came in, we hung about to see what was going on. From that day on I was hooked.

Like him or loathe him NG always hits the nail on the head concerning most music.
John Lennon as "etc"? Oh, man..
Should have bought it back in the day...but I did buy PIL 1 and 2.....and still have them.
Gallagher is right - youth culture had died in the mid-70s and the Pistols got it totally right in just one album - transformative moment
He he.. I was 9 years old singing 'I'm a lazy sod' at the top of the stairs, with my Mother at the bottom waving the wooden spoon saying 'what did you say'.. great stuff.
The most important band ever. Fck the Beatles or stones that band literally changed absolutely everything.
They just don’t make albums like that anymore...solid complete to the point not a dead spot and NEVER an apology.
Different music, Tubular Bells One album
Punk toughened everything up again when it was all getting very safe and tired. Acid House did a similar thing in 1987/8 when pop music was cringingly tedious. These days perhaps the problem is that anyone can put a tune streaming services, and there's so much music that's there's no real mutuality or fashion anymore that can be upset by bands like the Sex Pistols?
Im upset by your coments
Chris Thomas gives it away: the Sex Pistols "sound" (what we heard on the album) was Jones on bass playing the same base chords of the riff octaves lower. The sound engineer in another vid said Jones played like clockwork, on time and never missed a chord, have him on the bass and voila, perfect synchronicity of bass and lead harmonics, "thats where the power comes from.

My favorite punk band: The Sex Pistols.
Mark your favorite band Abba
Pretty Vacant is up there with Whole Lotta Love. That is a riff and a half

I’m impressed, I’m not sure how this comment was so overlooked.
John's looking a little worse for ware - hope his health is OK. This feels like its only part of a bigger documentary - certainly the influence was wider... why isn't Mani or Ian Brown on here? And Liam who still cites the Pistols as his number one musical influence (Lennon was more personal on him).

Captain Sunday you don’t dig the Pistols?
Marcdoubleu22LFC you don’t dig the pistols?
terry miller I’m aware of what they did and why they were making that music but it’s not my favourite music anymore, I digged the pistols when I was a teen and bought NMTB but my interest was peaked more by bands like Genesis, floyd, supertramp, the very bands they were crusading against for being commercially successful etc, then Lydon became what he supposedly hated when PIL gained success and he was living the good life in LA, he called bands like the stones irrelevant for doing exactly what he ended up doing. Their music was of its time and is forgettable to me now, but I still listen to a lot of progressive rock which has stood the test of time.
There are important bands that are seminal, and then there are bands that directly force a change onto society itself. I don't think anyone can dispute that the Sex Pistols were the latter.
Did Richard Branson just say that The Sex Pistols "brought us people like Genesis and The Rolling Stones?"
