pulled the cylinder head off my stock tester motor today, got the 8hp mounted, waitin for lamiks last bit of wiring to show up. got the maxxecu in, n53 head on, just about to clock my turbo and get started on fabbing my intercooler plumbing ,downpipe and screamer pipes. Ive got a buddy coming with a good camera, were going to clean my shop and start recording all of the progress.Youve inspired me to document it since everyone has been asking to see it. Im developing a new oil filter housing entirely that will fix all of those little leaks around that area. bolts to the head where the oil filter housing goes, has an fitting to radiator and 2 an fittings for remote oil filter. I went through 3 diff coolant hoses trying to get one that didnt leak, im pretty sure its a big batch of bad ones going around.
Not a crummy video at all. I love to go through the troubles along with you. This is extremely interesting as it was all so unexpected when you announced it just a short time ago. That system must be or will be very big bucks I expect but it might be the cream of the Peaches n cream for the type of car build you've been aiming at. Efficiency and smooth power as well as big power I think will be the results with this whole set up! I guess we'll see in a few days. I've been ordering and gathering parts for my 17T turbo install and suddenly I got a notice of my order being refunded. (Ebay). They claimed I had requested the cancellation which I of course hadn't so I wrote them telling them to be honest about these things so others don't go through the hassles the same way I now had to. (I found out they were out of LHD turbski's and that was the real reason why). So I took words you'd said from a long past video when you are talking about the failing 17T's of another persons car (I think that was the vid) where you said (Paraphrased) "it seems like the 11 blade 17t turbos have caused more troubles with blowing etc than the 6x6 blade 17t's I think they are all made by viv or something like that, I'm not sure but anyway just go for it and get em". So I bought the 17t's with the 6x6 blades now and they are on their way. No I'll never blame you if they blow up on the way out of the garage etc LOL. Besides the ones I had ordered had a strange band around the joining of the manifolds to the turbos area. Maybe those are the newer types copying the "Flow Max+" but I don't know and now that's not my problem anymore. I have realized that many of the "Brand" parts they sell on Ebay or AliExpress are so often insanely priced and they don't even promise anything more in the warranty as well as you say in this video they can be made or copied with less accuracy than the China type stuff often. Hokey crap Monkeys I've Written a novel here! SORRY! LOVE it ALL! GO GO GO!
Elring gaskets have been letting me down recently, I did my OFH and cooler gaskets January 2021, held fine until temperatures reached a few below negative celsius in January 2022, this time I bought OEM gaskets which were quite noticeably a bit different and also made in Japan, i think im going to stick to OEM for gaskets from now on.
Bruh I just did my ofhg like 2 months ago and they are starting to leak smh, same company elring, next time I do my port injection ima install oem gaskets
Not sure if you already knew this but don't forget to prime the engines oil after replacing the oil filter housing gasket. I have seen a few n20s and n55s rod bearings fail after not priming and replacing the gasket. n54s seem to be better about it but just to be on the safe side.
Honest to goodness video! I appreciate you showing the grind of what really goes into a custom build! I'm running a Tial Q BOV on my 135i. Dialing in the correct spring can be a little tricky. I ended up buying the whole kit with all the different springs (except green). For sure the Tial Q is more on the subdued end of the noise spectrum (which I personally prefer), but well designed and built to last. However, living in California means I need to temporarily swap in my factory DVs ever 2 years for SMOG inspection. 😒
Isn't modifying cars such a buzz. There is always something that doesn't fit correctly or leaks. The only leak I had on my built engine was the only China part on the engine, the larger oil cooler where the aluminum block for the hoses attaches to the thermostat housing on the OFH. Andrew, you should invest in a M3 steering shaft which is much smaller in diameter and would give you extra clearance. It is a straight forward change over with the standard shaft.
Could always run 1/8in npt to 1/4in or 5/16” barb 90degree fittings for the gate as it will allow for more clearance with the wastegate line and less prone to leaking with thread sealing tape or permatex thread sealer
Oh man this had me in stitches! I had allot of these same leaks(Except the ofh) when I was doing my turbos a few years back! Top radiator hose etc. So damn annoying! Takes a hours or days away from you! BMW Coolant systems are literally the worst!
Well done Andrew...As always, entertaining content. Some OE, I hope you have enough clearance for your screamer pipes. I'm not sure if the Tial vs Turbosmart diameter are the same. Secondly, it is advised to use AN fittings with steel braided hoses for the wastegates. It's a mother#$^% to replace hoses when the motors been running. The plastic vacuum lines even with heat protection fail frequently. It will result in overboost issues which be difficult to diagnose. Keep on doing what you, we appreciate it!
Turbosmart! I think they sound just a bit better, and I've never had an issue with my bov. I have had an elright ofhg and vcg fail, it isnt worth it to me anymore to save 20$ when you have to do the job again.
The radiator end tanks (plastic) would leak for a while if the system had been empty for some time, but if i filled the system in the evening, then let it sit over night it would seal itself. Same thing every time it was empty for a while, and never leaked more than the first few hours after being filled :P
Hah, well that kind of aligns with what this was doing and did in the past. Wonder if the o-rings swell up or something when in contact with coolant?? God knows, mysteries of BMWs.
look forward to your videos every day! I'm slightly sad whenever there's a day without a new video lol. but keep up the good work, I enjoy all the content, even ones like this where it's more diagnosing and troubleshooting than parts being installed. that way we get to see all the good and bad, ins and outs, smooth to migraine inducing lol. I've come to terms that's just how these projects and upgrades go on the n54 😂
@@ZeroTo60Tube indeed indeed lol. but just from my personal experience working on my e93 335i. from water pump, serpentine belt, etc etc. I just expect a curveball of some sorts while modding/repairing it 😂
I would wrap the wastegate dump more so then the water pump hose man. The heat wrap does a better job at keeping the heat in then protecting from radiant heat.
I'd go with the TurboSmart BOV... I favour them a little above the Tial(although the Tial is absolutely a nice one!) But with all custom builds, there will always be setbacks or unexpected issues. As long as you stay in there, you'll be just fine! Can't wait to hear that turbo spool(btw, I also have a Pulsar turbo)
You can get a 45 or 90 degree elbow for those wastegate nipples. Best way I found for the coolant hose relocation is to use the driver side hose from the 1M, the one that runs along the rail and into the radiator. Guess it would be passenger side for you. It has a fitting that will accept the 335d tank in the new location; OEM fit. You just then have to swap the y- elbow for the single 90 you cut off the factory hose near the thermostat.
So much great content lately!!! I used elring for both gaskets on my oil filter housing. They’re fine in the summer, but when it’s cold outside they leak oil for about 2-3 seconds on cold start then seal up. Strange. Anyway it could be me being rubbish or maybe elring gaskets aren’t that great. Just thought I’d mention it in case you OFHG leak was due to suspect elring gaskets? Probably not but just to let you know my experience.
That makes sense. I bet when it all heats up and expands it seals which is why i haven't noticed the coolant leaks. Mind you there was an oil leak evident. Hmmmmm, BMWs just like consuming gaskets it seems
