- We got to talk! This is my review of the final production version of the DPVR E4 VR headset! A couple of months ago I looked at a preproduction unit that was clearly not ready. The final unit and accompanying software absolutely surprised me, in a positive way. You are looking at a 120hz, 4k display, a big FOV and DisplayPort quality visuals! Not all is great though. Find out everything you need to know in this DPVR E4 review!

We didn't see this coming! Might this be a cheaper alternative to the high-end PCVR headsets for you? Are you gonna give it a shot?
Any plans bringing it to Amazon Germany or any other German seller?
Hi Sebastian, did You noticed any problem with overheating the headset, like Disco-VR?
How bright is the image? Pico 4 has 60nits some reviewers said. It's rather dark. How bright does this one get? btw, did you test FOV?
70mm IPD here, I use the Quest2 on the wide setting. The DPVR E4 does not work for me, everything just feels way off, especially in the distance. It's a shame because other than that, I agree with Seb's review, everything seems to works quite nicely. The software, although poorly translated, seems to be more a lot more stable and reliable than PiTool or WMR. Tracking and controllers feel identical to Quest. I forgot how awesome 120hz tethered looks, but unfortunately I would not recommend this headset unless you use a Quest2 on the middle setting. I had the same problem with the Rift S. Also worth mentioning, the cable is much shorter than I expected. I would recommend a Reverb G2 V2 instead of this headset, unless you need 120hz instead of 90, or if you're like me and the Reverb G2 just *wouldn't work* without explanation, all too often.
Well, then I'm buying this headset :)
we absolutely need more of these pcvr dedicated units where pcvr players are only paying for features they need.
you are fully right, sir!
Could you do some kind of comparison to the reverb g2 in msfs or rising sim? Seeing that is a PC vr headset and not a stand alone. Thanks, also not sure if you said there was an audio jack on the headset ?
@MRTV , Thanks for your review . I would expect this headset to have the same functions and specs as the PSVR2 as it's what PCVR needs right now at this price range.
Great video! How about tracking playing Beat Saber and peripherals like Vive Trackers?
Great review! This is tempting. How would you say it compares to the Quest PRO? My only issue with my HP G2 is the small sweet spot, and only 90Hz refresh. Otherwise, the G2 is a great headset.
Thank you Herr Sebastian, will you be doing a "no standalone PCVR" special video or article on your website to list all the pcvr only headsets you have reviewed so far? I want to get a proper headset with displayport and i don't even know where to start
It is anticipated tracking that causes drift when still. You move microscopically so it will try to stay ahead of the movement. Pending the refresh rate it may move a lot or barely at all. Even my Vive controllers do it when I hold them without input.
there is a position tracking like moving around the room? great review
PCVR with no lag is definitely the way to go, especially if you're a frequent SteamVR player. The G2 and Q2 are both great options, but this lightweight device seems like a great choice for an upgrade. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Hope this takes off. We need more mid range priced SteamVR headsets. The only other one that I can think of is the HP Reverb.
Also, I love that headstrap. I have a Vive Cosmos Elite which has the same kind of headstrap. The flip up function is so nice.
This and the Valve knuckles would be perfect!
You should try to get a look at the Dimenco SR Pro, 32' 8k lightfield 3D oled monitor
Bin gespannt, wie die DPVR E4 im Vergleich zu einer Pico Neo 3 Link abschneidet!
Can the cable connected to the headset be removed incase of damage or need of replacement?
Im thinking of buying one, i have a pico 4, but for my simracing setup i like to use something connected to the pc. My ipd is around 64,5mm so it seems i would be the perfect fit for this vr headset.
Thanks for this video, I’m really interested in this headset for sim racing. I prefer wired headphones to wireless, did you try with wired headphones and what was the sound and if any latency like? Thank you.
Hi, I didn't even try wired headphones because my wireless ones are so good...
Can this be used INSTEAD of a monitor? Or do you always need a monitor to start steam VR games etc. Would be so cool to have a work/playdesk with a hidden work/gamestation
Thanks for the review. Was wondering if this has a usb c port for using my wireless usb c headphones ? I see it has 3.5mm jack but did not see any mention of this. Was just wondering.
You can put the wifi dongle into your PC!
Again a player in the club very good!
Do i need a 4k monitor or my full HD is fine? also are all cables required in the package?
if anyone can help pls help, I have this vr just got it today, I'm setting it up and everything was perfect till i got to the room tracking it, its not working, it says to change orientation and ive walked around moved and even lay down I don't know what to do
Oooh displayport!
Hmm..reminds me of the Dell Visor headset I had back in the day. That flip up hinge broke after a few months and so did the replacement.
Thanks for this, very interesting product
If it got pancake lens and OLED panel, then it will be attractive to me. Otherwise, the visual difference between Q2, G2 and this one is not big enough to ask people to upgrade.
Nobody's going to use OLED panels anymore.
I always loved your content Sebastian... I just wish there was more stuff to play with all these headsets :(
Lately I feel there is more hardware than available games. I hope that PSVR2 will eventually bring developers back to VR (and eventually to PC as well), as Meta's recent layoffs are concerning.
Sorry for this random and off-topic rant.
Great Video as usual!
Thank you! Yes, no question we need more games!
Where do you get that black head stand on your right? Looking for something like that for my VR headsets. Thanks.
Too late already ordered the pimax crystal 🔮
No worries. Crystal will come in 2024 :D Plenty of time to cancel :D
@@chadef555 2024? Well i still hope so
How's the Blacks? is it Oled or LCD?
What kind of hardware do you need to run this thing properly? Would a 3070 be powerful enough? Or would I have to run it in 90... I am kind of interested in this one.. maybe when the price drops a little.
yhea i have a rtx 3070 and its enough for vr all game run well
Depending on the game. Most of the time it's powerful enough to run my G2 at stable 90, but no supersampling.
any news when this is coming to Amazon UK? Looks like the perfect stop gap before my next PC VR headset. Loved the Pico 3, but couldn't get one without dead pixels (seriously, I went through NINE lol).
It is a couple of weeks away from Amazon.co.uk
@@ji3200 I have a pico 4 as well, and many others lol
@@SimVRRacing i guess you like DPVR because of displayport
I get this unit is only PCVR, but is it only SteamVR or can it due other OpenVR based games (e.g. DCS standalone)?
Does this headset work with OpenXR toolkit?
Can this use IF light to use VR in the Dark? The tracking seems to need a lot of light and it's already to hot in my room here to have the lights on full blast. I did have an IF light for my Oculus which worked amazing, but I tossed it after getting a Pimax and the HTV trackers. I had that Oculus some 3 years, it got stuck on Passview mode and I could never get it to work right. About 3 months ago I bought a Pimax as its replacement. The Pimax no longer works either so I got the DPVR instead a few weeks ago. I'm really happy with how the DPVR works, but I'm gong to melt in here with all the lights on. I'm asking here because in all my searches for IF lights, only the Oculus shows up for what to use it with so I'm wondering if DPVR uses something else for its tracking.
is the tracking same as good as Oculus Rift CV1? I find CV1 tracking more real time than Quest 2 Inside out tracking
Great to see they improved it! Might be a good option for many.
Agreed.
Hello! Will it work with Mac OS?
have you encountered the HP Reverb G2's displays going black, only to resume picture again?
Could be your cable and how well it is seated.
If this had and OLED, clear lenses and good built-in audio system. I would feel inclined to upgrade from the G2. However, these days headsets in the consumer space mostly just seem like sidegrades with different benefits and drawbacks. I like some of the benefits with DPVR, like the light weight, refresh rate, SteamVR compatibility (no WMR). But I also dislike things like the dongle in the back, poor speakers, and the lack of real IPD adjustment.... These days you can't get hold of a Reverb G2 in Sweden, so it's good that there are actually new consumer-friendly PCVR headsets reaching the market.
The holy grail for VR is some sort of high FOV OLED HDR Display with Pancake lenses that don't block most light, plus wireless and face/eye tracking. So far I haven't seen ANY company manage those things, at least in an affordable way. Could take another 100 years with the way things are going. lol
@@theriddick It's such a shame that VR is chugging along without gaining any real momentum outside enthusiast communities.
Personally I think Meta did a disservice to the medium, as they offered standalone VR headsets way too early, killing off any real hype momentum for the masses. games often had poor graphics, poor physics, limited immersion. I really don't think that's what VR needed to keep the hype going for. VR became a fun toy for the average consumer that now lives in a drawer untouched.
As a VR enthusiast myself, it hurts my soul that normies still have the perception that VR is just "gimmick waiting to die"... Anyone who have played HL: Alyx or similar experiences know that it is the future of immersive gaming. I just hope it doesn't die out and the tech becomes better and cheaper over time.
@@PixelShade Nar Meta was fine releasing what they did. The issue with FB or Meta was they bought up tech companies and staff which starved the open market and did anti-competitive practices. Basically making it so they were only ones able to compete at that level. We do have PICO but they are bytedance and well, that is getting shut down around the western world for data being sent to CCP.
@@theriddick yeah. I mean, I have many beefs with Meta regarding how they have handled their VR investment. I mean, I don't mind their hardware per se, but to normal people I think the wireless Snapdragon XR experience have kind of limit the possible hype for the casual market. Instead of it being "the next thing" it just became a "fun thing for a while".
The only way for VR to become widespread is to have an open standard where companies work together. Enclosed ecosystems and predatory business practices will just result in fragmented user bases without real purchasing power in the eyes of investors.
@@PixelShade If they spent the money investing in new hardware tech instead of metaverse, it would have been good for everyone. Metaverse is Zucks dream of controlling the future where everyone is in it all the time. However the tech is MILES away from that, and people are slowly catching onto why it isn't a good thing.
Thanks, seem good for simmers. A threw the lenses vs g2 and pico 4 ?
Good idea!
Thanks so much. You were blown away by the visuals of Kayak VR on PSVR2. How does that game compare on this? Also PSVR2 loses tracking when the cameras can't see the controllers ( understandably ) , but this continues tracking. How is that possible?
This will also lose tracking if the cameras don't see the controllers! But it's all about the position of the cameras. Kayak looks great here too. It's very comparable if you have a good PC. Just colors are not as good as Psvr2 but you don't get Mura!
@@mixedrealityTV Thanks. I only found your channel because of PSVR2 and I'm so glad that happened. I'm happy to say I'm now a subscriber :)
@@geordiebrit1461 cooool, thanks!
Great review! Thank you for what you do Sébastien! (?sp?)
Still waiting to see if Pico release a Link version of the 4 or just skip to 5.
I was bummed too because it had no DP, but i bought it and i will say one thing, even if it did have the DP i would not use it, its so clean wireless
Ipd 59 here, shall i come over and test it for you ? ;)
It really looks like my old lenovo explorer
How much is it?
I don’t think you covered colors and contrast? Your opinion wired Dpvr or wired quest 2?
Dp is always better then usbc compressed
Would you say the overall experience is comparable to a displayport version of the Quest 2? (aside from the IPD and audio issues)
Yep.
@@mixedrealityTV Oh yeah, another question, if you can answer it, do the controllers have capacitive sensors like the quest 2s? The reverb g2 doesn't and thats my worry with this headset too
@samcandles no it doesn't, he goes over that in the video
@@2ttrashwagon582 Thanks, i figured that out almost a year ago and its why i never bought the headset but thanks
It’s a good offer, hp g2 is nice but this has better fov and is 120 fps. So some small trade offs between the headsets, but this can mean the world to specific types of players
Can you notice a big difference at all between 90 and 120 fps? Though the increased fov is nice for sure.
@@BotanicalOdyssey only when I’m getting shot in Pavlov hahah. But yes, tracking objects like in eleven table tennis is noticeable
In racing games you notice also.
would have been day 1 purchase if it was pancake lenses and had ipd (even if low resolution pancake at 75hz. like the htc flow)
its SteamVR, does that include linux?
The resolution per eye is the same as quest2. 1832x1920❕
Me and my 74IPD can't see how this is a better headset than a Quest2 except maybe for the DP's uncompressed image.
Thanks for the review. It's like an old school Headset with increased specs. I kinda like it and will keep an eye on it, even though I am waiting for what Beyond & Deckard is like.
Yes! Beyond will appear on the channel soon!
HI,what about glasses and the space in side? Thanks
Yes, you can wear glasses inside!
Have you been having issues with heat while using this?
No.
Hey is it's mic better than the HP reverb G2?
Hmm, I would not say so. The G2 mic is fine! You just need to lower the gain!
I would love to see something like that only with a bit better screen and Lighthouse-Tracking
BigScreen Beyond might be a good option
@@VREmirate yes, this device could be an option
@@VREmirate Not for £500 is ain't. Beyond is £1,000 without controllers, or base-stations. This E4 is around £500, and this is the sweet spot for price.
Price is a little too much considering the Pico Neo 3 Link can pretty do DP PCVR while also being standalone. I guess the only major difference is the slightly higher FOV?
FOV, 120 Hz Mode, binocular Overlap, comfort.
If you hate to deal with charging then this is the real deal
Great video, however with it not being ideal fir VRC or neos this headset would be a pass for me
My ipd is 61.5. You think this is close enough for me?
This should work.
This looks like my kind of headset. It looks very good. Shame I cant buy it from Amazon Uk. The import fees and delivery prices often kill it if you buy it from abroad. Could be a Pico 4 rival. I always like to see a removal cable in products. Can it be replaced? The controllers look Quest 2 ish. They were the best sized controllers imo
It should be coming to the UK as well!
@@mixedrealityTV Great stuff! Sony are missing an opportunity with PC users if you ask me. I really like the look of this headset a lot.
@@mixedrealityTV Can I ask you does this do AR? Does web VR work in this ? I assume so. Thanks.
Did they use the mold of the Lenovo Explorer?!?! They are exactly the same!
Haha, they look very similar indeed!
With eye tracking this headset would be perfect.
The price and quality puts it near G2. Maybe they are counting on no more G2s being manufactured and shops running out of stock, after which this would be the second best option? I'll be waiting for a clear upgrade from G2 (i.e. resolution & lenses).
Really? Are you sure G2 is end of life?
@@b.s.7693 There have been many rumors that HP is planning to exit the VR market. I'm not sure if the rumors have yet been confirmed.
@@EskoLuontola yes, the rumors I heard too
This blows tf out of Hp… period
Did you go over god rays??? Maybe I missed that part.
Ooops, I must do a written review. I did not talk about it here. It does have God rays. Not as bad as Index, but yeah, there are god rays, probably compareable to Quest 2. Thanks for your comment.
@@mixedrealityTV I think you missed the part with controller rumbling ? Is the rumbling better than on the G2 controllers ?
@@x32i77 yes. Can any controller rumble be worse than G2?
All I want is the PSVR2 spec for PCVR.
Since it is Steam VR tethered headset can the controllers be swapped out for Valve Index Controllers?
If you have Lighthouse Basestations I think that would be possible, but it wouldnt be able to just use Index Controllers
@@crispycrusader1 I have a Vive Pro 2 rig that is stilling thier collecting dust mostly, but yea i am in the valve / vive eco system already. The comfort factor and price alone make it sound like a sweet deal. (not to mention not having to worry about the headset dying)
You would need the OVR Space Calibrator to align the coordinate space of the headset and lighthouses. I don't know how often it needs recalibration (if it can preserve the calibration between sessions).
@@MrVoltz That's a good question. For the Quest 2 I had to recalibrate it almost each time, but with the G2 it was only a one time thing.
Don't forget that you need two specific SteamVR/Vive trackers dongles for the controllers on top of the lighthouses, otherwise they wont pair !
pancake lenses?
What’s it like while wearing specs ?
It works really well. I wore my glasses in it without any problem.
Looks like it's 3-4 years behind.
if it had a better microphone and fingertracking on the controllers i would have instantly bought it. its a shame that every single headset coming out has drawbacks that are actual dealbreakers. i got so excited for a minute man.
Frenelle Lenses - No Physical IPD ? May as well buy a Quest 2 and I'm not doing that.
can you wear glasses in this headset?
looks likes oculos rift s but in white
Its like an updated WMR headset, but G2 is already out there with a higher resolution than this. But it also showed, that WMR was right from the start. Inside out tracking wired PCVR.
Even though people kept complaining about WMR headsets, they were just ahead of their time.
I really don't see the point of this headset? You're right about the G2 having a considerably higher resolution and it beats it in everything except the slightly higher FOV and refresh rate all for a lot less given the frequent sales and used market right now.
@@BotanicalOdyssey Yes, its hard to say what their target audience is. It seems to be a good overall headset, but lacks anything special. DPVR has been making headsets for a really long time, so guess they have a market. My first headset was their DeePoon E2 model, and that was like the absolute beginning of VR. Then it was just the cheapest way to get a VR headset from second hand markets.
@@Nobody-Nowhere I'm looking at the Deepon E2's specs and it actually looks pretty amazing for the time!? This brand has totally flown under my radar!
WMR headset has only one problem and it's tracking. I got tired of fighting my G2 and sold it, because it wouldn't track even HMD position. Visible light tracking - what moron invented this.
MRTV is usually pretty good on the opinions but this one was the exception. Purchased one based on this recommendation and I really regret that and am hopeful DPVR will let me return for full refund. Issues: Halo causes headache (Use PSVR2 without issue) Nose gets smashed by the hard plastic under silicon light blocker. (do have a larger nose but nothing crazy) Hub is very bulky and ruins immersion. SteamVR reports error and applications never launch. Image had significant blur. FOV is really no better than Quest 2 with the exception of the height. Sticking with Quest 2 and the link for PCVR as it is a better experience even with the compression.
Hi Ron, sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience! It is so strange though, it sounds like your unit might be broken? I have no issue starting any game on Steam and also the other things you brought up don't quite fit for my experience, with the exception to the ones that I also mentioned. What's your IPD, probably that just don't fit?
This looked like a good Rift S successor! Too bad the capacitive touch on the controllers was left out. As a social VR player, that's kind of a deal breaker. I may change my mind if those controllers are released and hopefully still sold in a bundle with the headset.
You missed the part where it gets really hot at 120Hz.
I just want a new PCVR headset that doesn't need any extra layer of software on top of SteamVR, hopefully the Bigscreen.
I think that for Simracing it may be ideal and without spending so much money... I think I'll buy them to try, 4k120hz, great sweet spot, they weigh little and comfortable, well they fit me, since I have 64 IPD...
@@JoseFcoBN did you try it?
@@darrenberkey7017 Extra layers of software is still extra faff though. Also it's something extra that could be responsible for more bugs, making troubleshooting more tricky, etc. I miss plug'n'play SteamVR from my Vive Pro days.
No ipd adjustment makes this headset basically a no go for me
I’m 99% sure they are made in the same factory as the quest 2
Ehh, no ipd, fresnel lenses. No resolution upgrade.
I don't see it doing well for those reasons.
This needed Pancake Lenses & Real Adjustable IPD Digital only Gives me Major Headaches & Eye Strain & lazy eye. If It had them I would have Got it. I'm Just gonna Save up for the Varjo instead.
Personally I've never been a fan of halo straps. Since they air on your hair i feel like the headset slides around too much
whats the company?
Chinese one. Called DePoon. They already brought some VR headsets, so no newcomers.
Surely it’s just a Quest 2, but costing more just due to the lack of compression due to it not using USB C?? I don’t understand the appeal, can someone please tell me what I’m missing?
You can't beat display port quality and latency on PC, that's the appeal.
They don't make money selling your data like Meta does, so they need to charge more for the hardware to make an actual profit.
lack of compression is the appeal
@@ReavoEnd There's also only half the hardware involved compared to standalone headsets, so it should be a fair bit cheaper, not 550,-
When you start VR in Vive, you tend to be critical about tracking quality. My wife's Quest 2 works but is no match in the tracking department.
G2 goes on sale for 300 dollars thou i feel it just better deal
When? Its $599 right now
@@ji3200 like 1 week ago u missed it it sold out in a day
@@GabrielMccredi its ok. Ill get a brand new pico 4 for $339. Wireless gaming is better
I was feeling super great about this headset until i heard it uses the same panel as the quest 2. RIP colors.
I prefer pico 4
I'm sad that this headset doesn't have captive touch and fulll adjustable IPD. It could have been a Reverb G2 killer with those features. But it lacks the audio of the G2 and the controllers likely would play similar. These controllers would be a no go for me for VRChat and doing expressions. :( The mic also doesn't sound good at all.
the thing is, companies like Mata could build PCVR headsets way cheaper than standalone HMDs. Within 250€ it would be totally possible - if they would have want that ;-)
Yea I wanted that instead of shity stuff like having to charge headset often
If you want an awesome audio solution, get the Soundcore VR P10 wireless earbuds. They sound great, they're affordable, are easy to set up, and have *zero* detectable lag. I've had a pair for over a year that I use exclusively for VR and I'll never go back to built-in VR audio ever again.
So it's a rift s with 120hz 😮
Yes.
Sony take notes
550 price point and no fov eye tracking or ipd adjustment or finger tracking or double displays and build quality look very cheep this should cost at most 199 or 250
I saw it in VR Arcades, VR simulators etc It felt like any other Steam headset, $549 is too much imho
What would be a good price?
450 would be great!
Yes $450 would be a better price & much more competitive
If this was 300 dollars id get it...😅
