  • After getting off the plane in San Diego, all males West of the Mississippi, recruits meet the first of many drill instructors.
    Notice how disciplined they already are due to the training they received in the recruiting process.

    For a now old U.S. Recon Marine vet. (0311/0321) I find this very interesting, mainly because the recruits are already answering Aye Aye Sir and moving as a semi unit and they haven't even stepped foot into boot camp yet. We weren't answering with Aye Aye sir until I think about halfway thru 1st phase, it was just Sir Yes Sir. Shows how much pre indoc/training they get now before boot camp. Back in the day all the indoc I got was my Recruiter telling me "when you get to Parris Island the shit is going to hit the fan. Just keep your mouth shut and do whatever you are told to do as fast as humanly possible and you'll be fine"...lol...prophetic last words, which were entirely useless for the carnage of Parris Island in '74, but he was right about the shit hitting the fan.

      At Fort Knox in '69 we learned early on that you don't address an Army NCO as "sir". That scene in Good Morning,Vietnam where Cronauer calls SgtMaj Dickerson "sir" was *absolutely* accurate. "Sir"?! "I work for a living,Airman". "You will address me as Sergeant Major Dickerson".
      As for BCT your best strategy for survival was don't stand out...become as invisible as you can. That is,unless you planned to make the Army your career...in which case you wanted to stand out as a "leader". I had no desire for a career.

    I recall a Marine D.I coming onto our bus , and we were Air Force 😂. He told us we weren't tough enough to enlist in the Marines, and then ordered us off the bus. We were all confused as to why he was there. We never saw him again, but I do recall our arrival at the airport. We were yelled at, and told to sit Chief style. Which essentially is back up, and your feet connected so your legs were diamond shape.
    We learned real quick that we should have all worn basic clothing with no insignia of any kind. I unfortunately was wearing gym pants, and a very relaxed shirt with Popeye on it. The three levels of D.I got more informative. The airport one was "welcoming". The Marine on base bus was "witty". The ones on bus were "informative" . We learned the phrase " Sir/Mam trainee # " , and then followed with confirmation of orders. God cursed me with a sitting look like I was grinning. This didn't work in my favor lol.

    I was on an airplane with a large group of of Air Force recruits going to boot camp. I was just a few years older than most of them but looked their age. They all exited the plane when it landed but I was staying on for my destination. The stewardess had a nervous look on her face when she saw me. I told her I wasn’t going anywhere with a stern look on my face. I smiled and let her off the hook and told her I wasn’t with those guys.

    I enlisted in 1963. I never saw a recruiter or received any formal info on what was going to happen. However, I did have several close relatives that were Marines. I actually smiled when we were on the yellow footprints (15Jan64). It was quite a while before I smiled again.
    These recruits have obviously been well indoctrinated before their initial contact at Bootcamp. SF

    There is a definite difference between what we see here and “something like this.”

    August 17, 1964 was the day I arrived at Parris Island. The sand fleas were active that night and they enjoyed crawling inside my nose and ears and dining to their hearts content. We couldn't swat them because we were at attention. The Drill Instructors kept reminding us that the sand fleas had to eat, too.

    • @johnecker
      @johnecker  3 года назад +17

    • @davidwarner3326
      @davidwarner3326 2 года назад +5

      It goes back to not all drill instructors being sergeants, as corporals were even allowed to be DI's. The easiest fix? Call everyone "Sir" or "Ma'am."
      Since the Army refers to anyone E-5 and above as "Sergeant" there aren't the same issues.

    On the late night of August 30, 1973, we were being ordered onto gray U.S. Navy busses and two uniformed sailors diddlybopped by. One casually asked us: "Are you guys Navy or Marines?" One of us responded: "Marines!" The sailors both replied, in unison, like schoolgirls: "You'll be sor-ree!"
