I'm a marine who graduated awhile ago, just found this video by chance. I was thinking "man, the games we used to play." Then, I wasn't paying attention and looked away to eat some pizza, when the drill instructor yelled "EYEBALLS!'' I instinctively looked back at the screen and almost yelled "snap sir" (that's what I was taught). Apparently the PTSD of bootcamp never leaves you.

This is how I ran my fourth grade classroom, first day! Well, maybe a little gentler, but I spent the first month teaching procedures before tackling any substantial academic material.
This is the part where some of the recruits still think the way the DIs talk is funny or cool but that ends pretty quickly once you get off the bus the first night lol
I went through Marine Corps boot camp in 1982 at MCRD Parris Island, SC. I still remember all four of my DI's. I was honored to have served 20-years (1982-2002) as a U.S. Marine. And yes you are right, this is just a little tad bit of what they will receive in boot camp. ---- Semper Fidelis (Curt)
None of the instructors in all of the branches gives up on recruits, However we were not treated as family until we graduated Basic Military Training!!!!! All of the instructors are trained well and do an honorable job in changing us from boys and girls, to men and women!!!! Please do not assume basic will be easy, it will shock you the minute you are ordered off the bus to the footprints on the concrete, hot, cold, rain, storm doesn't matter!!!

It will always change to just a little less as the weapons of war become more intense, I was told in 1974 by my drill instructors that we had it easy and our instructors were returning from Vietnam in 1974, so it will always continue to be less aggressive, in my series 150s, a drill instructor who's name I clearly remember, he was a little crazy We thought, he was demoted to corporal for having a young recruit hold a bottle of clorox while open without the top cover on it, he held it up on his open mouth and told that if he swallowed, his fate would be his own decision, I believe the recruit was in pltn 159, 1st btlln, P.I. S.C. 1974.
I am so thankful for the DIs that turn our boys and girls into the brave that keep us free! My son graduated in Jan 2020 some of the mom's got upset about the Dis being so aggressive. I just don't understand that line of thinking know your kid is volunteering to fight for what is right and helping them be all they can be. God bless the DI
MOMS are ruining the purpose of the Marine Corps. We were severely punished after a kid’s dad wrote a letter to the Senior and asked him to “cool it”. We got ITd so bad…. Dude fell real bad on his face repeatedly in the middle of the night and then requested to be transferred to another platoon. I think he graduated but I never saw him again.
I never understood why people get so butthurt and bent out of shape about the yelling. You have joined the military. It is stressful. Very stressful. There is a possibility you will at some point be sent in harms way. Which is also stressful on you and your family. If you can't deal with a few months or weeks depending on your branch of people yelling at you and getting you prepared for what may come, you have no business in the military.
Most of these people care about you but in order to teach you they almost like brainwash you in a way it's kinda neat but it's no shame to think for yourselves sometimes either dont believe everything they tell you to believe.
During my 25 years in the USN I served with USMC personnel while at joint commands, in Iraq as well as Afghanistan and embassy duty, they are a good bunch of folks but sometimes really difficult to get them out of that group mindset.

Im retired. I was a Naval Aircrewman. The only time i ever had Navy instructors was in boot camp. Let your recruits know we are all one team. Stop the separation. Do you know how annoying it was to come across those Marines that just couldn’t understand why Navy people are training in the same class. Its always a weird situation to come across that. I served 20 years and im retired with wings of gold and i guess im just feeling a little nostalgic. But hey. Teach them recruits we are all one team. A little banter and friendly competition is fine. But I remember in 98 when a E-2 marine PFC just couldnt handle and attacked a Navy E-3 while we were doing barracks clean up. He couldnt handle being put with a sailor to clean the barracks and pick up cigarettes in NAS Jacksonville “c” series barracks. He lost his mind. They fought and it didn’t do good for either of them. They both went to restriction even when the Marine apologized for starting it and was just so disappointed to be put with a squid for barracks clean up. One team one fight lets be friends.
We don’t care about that. You read it wrong. What we don’t like, is that other branches typically don’t give the same effort that we do, but desire equal respect. I’ll give an example. We did a joint operation with the Army in Afghanistan. We had to build two bridges. The Army would build a permanent bridge on location while we provided security, then the Marines would build a temp bridge at another location while he Army provided security. Army began their work, we had machine gunners in vehicles CONSTANTLY surveying the landscape while they worked, we had active foot patrols walking the area, the ENTIRE time! It took them 9 hours to finish. We drove to the next location and it was their turn to provide security for us. Their turret gunners were SLEEPING in the trucks, no foot patrols, etc. It got so bad, our platoon commander told them to “just go. We’ll cut our staff in half and perform our OWN security!” THAT’s what we get upset about! Of course, we already think we’re the best branch. But, incidents like this only further reinforce that feeling. When I was lower in ranks, I too, had to police call with a few sailors. They’d be half-assing the job and they’d keep making us start over again. Just do the job. That’s all we ask!
Not knowing what to expect, until you got to MCRD and meeting the DIs for the first time is part of the whole shock. These kids already know what to expect.
I was born on Parris Island. PLT 276 we had Elliots Beach. Then ITR at Camp Geiger then off to Camp Pendleton for Jungle warfare training. Ten WESPAC. I came back to Parris Island asa WSI ( water Safety Instructor ) I taught Drown proofing to Marine recruits. Till I chose to become a Scuzzy Civilian
Grad Nov 1983. This is EXACTLY why Marine leadership is flawless. Under 10", attention was laser focused on ever syllable. They must first perfect the skill to listen. You must follow before you can lead. There was NO room for misinterpretation. They don't get to "think". This is why Marines are so lethal. oorah. I can still go into that mode in a crisis.
I missed all this preparation. My preparation was a last meal at Denny’s and then the smell of jet fuel at San Diego airport, followed by a short bus ride with my head in between my knees lol The rest was a fkn blur .
