After 6 years of human anatomy and always needing to look up the cervical level of attachment for the scalenes, this is the first time I have ever heard 36,27,46 and I have not forgotten since watching so hopefully this time it sticks! (Plus I made it the combination for my PT school locker:-) Thanks Kinesiology Kris!

Thanks. I just had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome and my arm is doing great. However I’ve still got the old neck pain that has gone along with. The tos and now I have pain that I’m trying to be able to say exactly where it is. The anterior and middle scalenes were removed along with the first rib. I’m having pretty near constant pain in the back of my neck but not where it’s always been in the part that I would really call my neck but in whatever exactly it is where my neck is meeting my truck I’d like to know like what number disc that is and I’m wondering if the missing scalenes are involved with this pain? So I’m wondering What would be the opposing muscle for the scalene’s can you tell me that? Anyway thanks for the great video. I am at Cota and I just went for 12 sessions of physical therapy where Or make much of an effort.

Okay, so I'm little confused. In a video in your playlist ("Scalene Muscles" by MedicineBoys) it says that the action of the Anterior scalenes is spinal rotation to the same side (as well as elevating the first rib). But in this video you say that the Anterior scalene doesn't rotate, but flexes the spine (on the saggital plane). Possibly it's a little of both?

You have every right to be a little confused. My answer would be possibly a little of both, I STRONGLY recommend following your text given to you for your course of study, as with the actions, the origins and insertion also very in different text and online sources. I followed the text I studied in collage, however some sources cite Rotation of the neck, others cite Lateral Flex. of the neck, and some cites Forward Flex.. to be honest, I think the doctors are confused ;-)

why is the origin moving to the insertion for flexion of the head using the anterior scalene? I thought insertion moves to origin...
