  • This best-selling choral anthem, by Daniel Gawthrop, has captured the heart and soul of many singers and audiences since it was first published in 1991. The text, by Jane Griner, can be interpreted in various ways, but it has most often been sung at memorial services or for terminally ill patients facing death. It speaks of the great comfort and healing that singing can bring to the dying, suffering or grieving soul. "My soul finds primal eloquence, and wraps me in song... If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby... If you would mourn me and bring me to God, sing me a requiem, sing me to Heaven."
    Born 1949 in Fort Wayne, IN, Daniel Gawthrop is an American composer, primarily of choral music, but also of organ and orchestral music. In addition, he has also been a broadcaster, clinician, adjudicator, organist, conductor, teacher and writer.
    Here are the lyrics:
    In my heart's sequestered chambers
    lie truths stripped of poet's gloss.
    Words alone are vain and vacant
    and my heart is mute.
    In response to aching silence
    memory summons half-heard voices
    and my soul finds primal eloquence
    and wraps me in song,
    wraps me in song.
    If you would comfort me;
    sing me a lullaby.
    If you would win my heart;
    sing me a love song.
    If you would mourn me
    and bring me to God;
    sing me a requiem,
    sing me to heaven.
    Touch in me all love and passion,
    pain and pleasure.
    Touch in me (touch in me)
    grief and comfort,
    love and passion,
    pain and pleasure.
    Sing me a lullaby,
    a love song,
    a requiem.
    Love me, comfort me,
    bring me to God.
    Sing me a love song,
    sing me to heaven.
    This was at the Chicago Chamber Choir's 3rd and final concert of our spring season, entitled "Burst out Singing", at Court Street United Methodist Church, Rockford, IL, Sunday April 14, 2013. Our two previous performances had been in Chicago and Evanston. Conductor, Timm Adams.

    Sang this in my HS choir. It never fails to move me, be singing it surrounded by other people is an other-worldy experience.

    As a former member of CCC, I always thought this was one of our best. We generated such emotion that it bounced of the audience and back onto us. I dug deep into the singer next to me for energy ( you understand , right?) So I could evoke all I could. There were members of the group in tears after singing this. Of all my musical endeavors, this is without parallel the best. Hoo-aah!

    I graduated 2016 but me, and my my high school choir absolutely nailed this song come competition time. Was some of the most fun and challenging work I’ve had in years, but it’s now definitely a throwback

    As a choral educator I spend countless hours on RUclips listening to choirs and have never felt the need to comment on a video till now. I would say this is near perfection but couldn’t think of anything that could make it better.
    This IS perfection. What an incredible group/performance! You fed my soul!

    My choir did this song for a friend of our choir and director... the friend just lost his youngest son to suicide and his wife recently had a severe stroke. Our director asked us to sing this in memory of him. We were all in tears and we all still think of him. An amazing song.

    Sang this in 2005 my sophomore year on top of the highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains. It still saves my heart to hear it. Beautifully done. Bravo. And cheers to every person who sings this still today. May you feel every bit of the peace it brings. ~Holly Murray

    The first time I sang this in my choir, I had just been to the funeral and burial of a friend. I haven't been able to sing it without crying, since. Still working on it . . . And it might become my request for my own funeral.

    I was just asked to sing this piece as part of a choir at a funeral. I seriously don't know how I'm going to get through it as it is so, so emotional, but so beautiful.

    My concert choir sang this. We sang it in a church for our final (yay acoustics) and it just happened that the former governor's late wife was in the church awaiting her memorial service. He was with her
    He came out and begged us to stay and sing it for the service.

      Sohailah Stout if you were any pickier you would have been more picky about their vowels not being tall and their diction being out of place sometimes, but i will admit they have good pitch

" And look to the hills from whence my strength. Cometh" yes my new friends, look to the Lord our God, and raise your hands,,,,HE AND ONLY HE,hold the answers to our lives and the comforting messages that we will all be together again. Now I ask that you bow your heads, and send God the Father his son Jesus Christ and the holy Spirit, thanks that you awoke to find onther day on gloryl to praise Him. There is something about this piece that evokes ✨✨✨ throughout it. It's remarkable in that way. I have loved it since singing it 24-25 years ago. I am now looking to volunteer with a hospice choir and hope to be able to sing this again. ✨💖🙏🏻💖✨

    when i was 12, the middle school and high school choirs of the group i sing with (and i've been singing with them for almost 10 years now!!) traveled to the UK. i don't remember everything about the trip, just that i had an amazing time and the core memories created through the touring experience solidified that music is what i'm meant to be doing with my life. one specific thing i do remember though is that the high school choir did this piece, and every single time i heard it in the audience i teared up, in a mix of catharsis and admiration for the older choir. my grandmother had passed just a couple months before the trip, and every time i heard it in the beautiful old cathedrals of london i felt a warmth and peace as if she was there. needless to say i love this piece, i'm running an a capella club at my school next year and came across an arrangement of this which immediately sparked me to search up a recording. beautiful job :)

    I was in a choir in high school that did this song when we sang at a holiday season memorial service at a funeral home. This service was for people who had lost loved ones and wanted comfort in the holidays. This is still to this day one of my favorite songs I’ve ever sung. It was so beautiful, and this choir did an amazing job with it by the way. One of the most gorgeous and peaceful choir songs I’ve ever heard
