Mike was quiet for a month, then casually dropped a feature-length film... I can't begin to imagine the work that went into this. Thank you guys for sharing this epic story!
Proud to say that your videos are some of the few that I tend to watch before going to bed or on a weekend trip with friends. Also proud to say that I will be losing 2 hours and nearly 6 minutes of sleep tonight.
For smallish brookies ("brookie sliders") I like to very lightly saute them and then pick them up in my fingers and gently kiss the meat off the skeleton. Really cuts down on the number of bones to chase down and spit out!
I catch a lot of trout but cannot get myself to like the taste of them. We love fried walleye, crappie, and catfish. Trout are just too "fishy" tasting for my liking.
I really really like the fact that you are helping break the stigma that all fly fishermen must release all fish caught, sometimes it's okay to keep a couple for eating, that makes me happy to be a fly fisherman, thank you for this amazing content and your hard work you're putting in
Context is king! But the message gets lost in the virtue signaling overcorrection from our great grandfathers folly. Brook trout taste great, especially when there are too many and they aren't native.
Mike Thanks so much for sharing an adventure that this old fly fisher will never get to experience. What an epic trip that will be with you forever. Thanks again
I am with you in spirit Jeff! I can only do a mile or two to get to off-road fishing locations. But I do have many fond memories of being stationed with the Air Force (during the Reagan - Bush era) in Wyoming, Montana and Colorado ... and catching lots of wild trout off-the-beaten trail. Keep the videos coming Mike!
As an aging broken Army vet... this video was so motivating! Me and a few buds were exactly like this in our younger years. We've had many a grand mountain adventures. I've also been a fisherman all my life (I live in Florida), but it's all been heavy tackle. For some time now, the Wind River Range and Wyoming, in general, has captured my imagination. Fly fishing (which I have never done) for mountain trout (and especially Goldens) has become a goal for me. I'm not sure I'll ever have the resources to make a trip to Wyoming happen and I don't know if the physical ability has passed me by... but this video right here... I can't tell you how much I appreciate it and how much it gets me fired up. If I ever makes this trip happen, I'll be sure to send you some pictures- because a large part of making that happen came from this video. Thank you for the inspiration.
It is never too late to start training again! Do a little each day and you'll be scaling those mountains no problem. I could not recommend this trip enough Scott, hope to see those pictures from your trip one day.
I found this channel recently and have thoroughly enjoyed your storytelling. The imagery, ethics, the fish, the pure enthusiasm and occasional (and realistic) frustrations along the way. Great stuff man, keep it up! Enjoying from Austin, Texas.
I don't know what it is. The voice over commentary, the great video for such limited equipment, the information shared, or what but dude, this is a great video. I'm a huge fan. Enjoy it all. Keep it up.
Watching this for the 2nd time in two days because I found it so captivating. You truly captured fly fishing and anyone who loves the back country and why we love it. True help for the winter cabin fever and my anticipation for my weekend trip down to the Wind River this summer
I was going to watch the first 1/2 hour or so tonight and you sucked me in right through to the end. Great trip that brings back many fond memories of alpine hiking/fishing with my buddies back in the 70’s/80’s. We obviously didn’t have the resources then as today. Just a ziplock bag full of national forest maps and high hopes that those little blue specks would harbor some aquatic life. You guys will remember this the rest of your lives. RCJ go KU! But don’t tell my daughter… she’s a Wildcat through and through!
Again, another great video of one of the most breath-taking trout environments in the world. Although at times I think you provide TMI while hiking on the trail ... I greatly appreciate (in this film) that you do NOT candy-coat the brutal hikes involved to reach some of these magical alpine lakes. Other fisherman / videographers focus solely on the fish at the end of the trail. So "good on ya" with this video!
Awesome video and fishing guys. I work in Lander at a fly shop and this year was one of the most pressured years on our mountain for “golden trout.” I love fishing for them too but the trash that the tourists left and the pressure they put on all those lakes was staggering. I do not care that you fly guys fish this wonderful place but just keep the mountains and lake names to our selves boys. I do also appreciate the business though for sure. Thanks again for your visit here and glad you guys enjoyed the mountain. Thanks, awesome video!
LOVED this video. I've done the winds 4 times solo now and caught my first goldens last summer. I know exactly where this is, but the walk keeps me away too.
I totally understand the amount of planning, research and energy to pull off this kind of a trip. Double 👍s up to both of you. You are an inspiration to chase the dream that is deeply rooted inside of you. Keep doing what you love and sharing these videos. We are here watching and supporting you too.
Great content. Glad Alexx recovered and back on trail. Love the info, love the literary voice-overs (wax poetic...we all understand.) Thanks for the effort...yeah, great content.
The Winds are unforgiving but the reward of cresting the first mountain and looking down at the valley inside the range is well worth the suffering. Great video Mike.
FANTASTIC video, I CANNOT BELIEVE I have only just now found your channel! Seeing your Lake #1 again and in such high definition brought tears to my wife and my eyes just now. I am honestly amazed at both how quickly you reached it, and how short a time you spent at it; when we have researched and make it to a trophy Golden lake, we flog it for a long time. For example, last time we were at Lake #1 (mid-late July of 2021), my wife, daughter, and I spent the better part of three days getting to it, and then ten days fishing it before heading out and onto our next drainage. I'd sure love to swap stories with you, as this June will be my family's fifth year in a row spending several weeks in the Winds chasing Goldens!
Excellent video! I truly enjoy the content you put out. I’ve honestly never commented on a youtube video, but you deserve positive remarks. My son and I both watch your videos. We love the passion and enthusiasm you have for fly fishing. We feel the same way. The Winds were already on our bucket list and now have moved up the list. We also enjoyed the Conejos video from last year, and we added that to our list. Being from PA makes it tough to get out there, but we have been blessed to fish Colorado the last three summers. For now, we are enjoying fishing for Steelhead on tribs to Lake Erie. Keep the content coming! Tight Lines!
Thank you so much Michael!! That really means a lot, I am so glad y'all enjoy these! With the limited hardware I carry I try my best to show the more real side of this game we play! Couldn't recommend the winds enough!
Mike, I think this was the best video that you have made. I especially liked the brook trout lake, what amazing fishing. Thanks so much for the video, your hike and suffering were worth it to me!
I'm jealous of every part of this adventure except the mosquitos! Well done planning for and powering through that particular snag, and fantastic content as always.
Just want to say after watching you videos I decided to give fly fishing a shot. I started only a few months ago but I have to say... that was a life changer! I never really went into the wild and mainly just stayed home after I worked or on my days off. I feel like not only is it a hobby but it has mentally and physically changed me. I now have somewhere I can go to be at peace to let my mind recalibrate. Thank you I will be make sure to follow all of your videos closely or listening as I am heading up into the mountains.
Wow. I fished near that area over 30 years ago, but was not chasing goldens. I caught my first grayling in the Wind Rivers and it has always held a special memory. Thank you for the fantastic footage and a reminder that I need to put this trip on the list of trips I now need to conduct with my own sons. Tight lines my friend.
Wow what a trip. I live near the area and have been close to those lakes. Deep creeks are good too. Some pretty alright golden fishing in the beartooths too!
I really enjoyed this! Oh to be your age again without a kid to be able to do adventures like this. Hopefully when my boy is old enough he will want to scale the high mountains with dad! Cheers from Oregon!
Thanks Mike and Allex for a fantastic trip in the back country of the Wind River Range. We were to Dubois and the Cut Throat Fly Shop a few years ago and My wife and I had a trip of a lifetime. Great Fun. Glad you guys made it out to sart planning for next year, Maybe one of these days I will run into you on North Bear Creek in the Driftless. Fish ON.
Great job guys! Was narrated, videoed and edited with good information, awesome scenery, great fishing and good intentions. Thank you for sharing your "bucket list" adventure.
Excellent video. Thanks! Thinking of visiting that area next summer, but I won’t do your 1st and last day “death marches”. More like a 9 day trip. I’m 69 so I don’t go far each day. Could you give more info on the GPS unit you show?
Thank you so much James! It’s called the Garmin inreach mini. I’ve had it for almost two years now and it absolutely rocks! Connects directly to my phone and allows super easy communication to the world
I really loved this!! It was so much more than a typical fly fishing video. Great story telling. I super enjoy your enthusiasm and film work. I also appreciate how you don't cuss very much during your videos. I can watch it with my daughters. Gets me excited to get in shape and get out there! Great work!!!
Fantastic job guys. Of course I love all the fishing but great to get all the background of the planning and some history of the fish in that area. It’s nice to see that I’m not the only gear/research/trout junkie out there. HUGE PROPS!
Greetings from the BIG SKY of Montana. This is a place I've only read about. It ain't easy, but the fish should be big. Met with Waylon and his wife in the park with elk antlers.
Loved your video and the hug amount of work you put in to make it happen, I can't thank you enough for sharing with us, what an epic trip into the Winds
Beautiful fat goldens! Was in the Wind Rivers for the first time last summer on the south west side on the hunt for goldens in some off trail lakes but only caught one smaller hybrid in a drainage on the way to the popular Titcomb Basin. Did a grueling 15 mile first day with 6 hours of driving like you. Spectacular scenery mountain scenery and lakes! The mosquitos were horrendous, never seen it like that where the mosquitos cover every inch of you clothes or no clothes. And I live in Montana.
If the nice ranger lady hadn't warned us about the bugs.. we would have been in serious trouble.. bug spray and all, we were wiping off 20-40 at a time at some of the lakes
@@FLYALLSZN Think I lost a pint of blood that week even with 100% Deet. They found every little opening. Like how you detailed how to find the lakes without naming them and recognized that it is physical shape that prevents most people from getting there. It's not like a crowded river that people can float or drive up to. If you haven't been yet, you might want to explore the Beartooth Mountains in Montana or if you can score a coveted Slough Creek permit in Yellowstone. Hundreds of high mountain lakes and the scenery is spectacular.
Hi Mike, I was wondering if you ever considered doing a video on how we can take better videos on our excursions. You obviously have gathered a bunch of experience and I think you might be surprised how many of your viewers would appreciate learning how to make their GoPro vids more enjoyable for themselves and family. Practically half of our 100 member fly club have one generation or another of GoPro, and really aren't getting much out of their efforts. I mentioned to a couple of buddies that I would be asking you for help and they and they got really pumped ! You've helped all of us with every as of a trip, from the initial planning, flies to tie, rods to use, and how to pack. I'd really ike to now learn how to take a vid of a swimming trout !! Here is my one and only attempt at a vid of my trip to the Conejos. Heading back this July and I would sure appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks very much, Bob ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=fly+fishing+so+colorado+conejos+river
Another epic wanderlust adventure chasing fin and tail in the western mountain states backcountry. I always enjoy immensely watching your mystery meat hangers, I'm salivating to get back out to the big WY! Gotta love those western wild waters and very glad to see you guys spanking some tank donkey trout. Thanks a ton always for sharing the love and fun Mike. Hope you have very happy holidays, travel well and be safe, cheers. Recon Release an& Remember!
Wow, I have never seen a Golden trout, so beautiful! You both are so lucky to have caught them, so awesome! And great video! guys, can't wait for the next one's!
Damn, Watching this make me want to plan my own trip. I guess age 40 is as good a time as any. Thanks for the awesome video and inspiration. Will certainly keep watching the channel. Tight Lines.
awesome video. I am a Sierra Nevada golden trout freak. gotta hike far and high. too pretty to eat. brook are my favorite to eat. in Yosemite it is actually illegal to release the brook trout. you must keep them. they outdo the rainbow and brown trout so they need to be culled.
It might be a bit extreme.. but I wouldnt be opposed to the mandatory harvest of certain nonnative populations of trout.. Especially back east in places like the Driftless..
Awesome catches!! That sure is well worth hard hiking, you guys did, to see that lake. Beautiful landscape of mountains and lake! Awesome you take the time to call folks from park rangers or someone at National State Parks in the areas you going take a trip to, get all information you need. Looks like I'll need to put superglue in my first aid kit!
@@FLYALLSZN yes, sounds good use them to get info. I just never thought about using them. Thanks to you, I'll start out making phone calls, to help out my next trip!
This was fantastic. I thought it was only the Nordic trout bums that faced mosquito apocalypses to get their fix. I hate mosquitoes so much - don’t think I could do it. Really love the feature-length FAS films too. Great editing and storytelling and the whole nine. Cheers from the Blue River, Colorado
Dude! Your videos are so awesome. This is a great film. Thank you for providing this amazing content for free on here. I hope people realize how much time and effort goes in to what you do. Much love brother! Cheers!
Your videos alone have really inspired me to get out there man and love nature and fish and enjoy them you have no idea. I love the videography and story telling of the whole thing. You do better then good. Your video of black canyon of the Gunnison and this stand out to me so much. Any chance you have the name of the song playing towards the end of the video around 1:56:16? Tight lines buddy, can’t wait to see where the next adventure takes us.
Thank you so much Garret!! Just trying to show the more authentic side of adventures like this! It can't be all about the glam! Here is that song: www.epidemicsound.com/track/jRz0dh5wSw/
Thanks for showing us your workout regimen 😅. Damn you put in some work to get to paradise but so worth it. Love the video and those golden trout are frickin gorgeous..very cool guys!
I agree about your comments about catch and release and catch and cook. There is a time and place for both. 100% I recently caught my first true native golden in the siera it was awsome.
I have to say I made this hike in the winds in the late seventies and caught those awesome golden's back then. I do feel your pain it was an extremely tough hike but well worth it now I think I'm a little too old to make that track thanks for sharing
Mike was quiet for a month, then casually dropped a feature-length film... I can't begin to imagine the work that went into this. Thank you guys for sharing this epic story!
I was hard at work brother! So glad you enjoyed it! 🙏🏼
I watched this in one sitting! Phenomenal!
Proud to say that your videos are some of the few that I tend to watch before going to bed or on a weekend trip with friends. Also proud to say that I will be losing 2 hours and nearly 6 minutes of sleep tonight.
That is high praise! Sorry in advance for the sleep loss haha I hope it’s worth it 🙏🏼🤞🏼
In my case I split things up with an overnight intermission. 🎉
That was incredible 👏
I like seeing other flyfisherman harvesting fish and not just catch and Release.
Nothing beats fresh trout over the fire
Context is important! But it certainly is taboo in a lot of ways these days with the C&R narrative
@@FLYALLSZN I'm old school, not offended 😁
More lake brookies for us then!
Watched this probably 5 times at this point. Thanks for this awesome video and helping my home sickness for my home state while I'm here Texas.
Hell yeah! So glad you like it! Thank you for the support

Thanks so much for sharing an adventure that this old fly fisher will never get to experience. What an epic trip that will be with you forever. Thanks again
It was so amazing! We really managed to crack it out of the park with Meat Hang 2022
I am with you in spirit Jeff! I can only do a mile or two to get to off-road fishing locations. Man I’ve become addicted to your guys channel. Right after I became addicted to fly fishing. Those trout are so beautiful!
Fantastic show guys! Thanks Mike and Allex!

THAT IS WHAT I LIKE TO HEAR! Hate for you to lose sleep but I am so happy it was enough to keep you interested the entire time! RCJ brother!!
Agree...watched the premier and didn't even realize film was 2 hours.
I was really worried the length was going to turn people away! That is so good to hear
Epic! Munching on brookies and catching goldens for fun....and that scenery!
Hard to beat something like that!
Again, another great video of one of the most breath-taking trout environments in the world. Although at times I think you provide TMI while hiking on the trail ... TMI on the trail? I figured it's best to show as much of the experience as possible
You guys did an amazing job with this film, absolutely beautiful journey. 🤘
Thank you so much!! We had such a fun time making it!
Great video. What was the bag you were putting the brookies into?
The thumbnail might be a joke but I wouldn’t be surprised if this video really does win some awards. amazing stuff
LOL I just hope more folks zoom in on those silly awards those other "films" put up
Great film really enjoyed it, those goldies are awesome. All the best from England.

Thank you so much Jeffrey!
Absolutely phenomenal.🔥And DGD for the hike out! About as good as the sounds of nature if you ask me.
Thank you!! Praise be to DGD!! We wouldn't have made it out otherwise
What a great video (movie) guys. Easy to watch, entertaining. Just well done.
Thank you Holly! The high praise is very much appreciated
Great job Mike !! The video is outstanding, thanks very much for all your efforts and and all you do for the sport.
Thank you so much!
Thanks very much, Bob

Of course Paul! So glad you liked it! It was truly a once in a lifetime adventure

Great Video!!!!
Thank you so much Dustin!
Awesome video as always brother keep them coming.
Can do!! Thank you so much!!
Felt like i was there. Great Vid.
Thank you so much Chris! So happy you enjoyed it!
He’s such an inspiration to me
Same! Kowalsky really is the man haha
They are a resource that gets under utilized imo! They are there to help, might as well call and chat
Those bugs had us on the ropes! They were hard to deal with at times! Cheers Andrew! So glad you enjoyed it
Excellent job guys keep up the good work.
Thank you so much Stephen!
Beautiful guys!
Thank you so much Jane!
Fantastic video guys! Headed to the Winds this Wednesday. Can't wait!
Cool! Just a fantastic editing and filming job. Stellar video!
Thank you so much!!
@@FLYALLSZN looking forward to all future videos!
Man, I'm so happy to have stumbled upon this channel. Amazing job guys!
I'm a but surprised you guys don't play the big trout longer. That was my favorite thing about trout fishing in MO.
loved the video and amazing sights
keep the good work coming!!!
Thank you so much Harold!
Awesome, in every way!
Thank you so much!!
This is so epic
So glad you like it 🙏🏼
I’m a week into my backcountry fishing hyperfixation, and my head snapped up when I heard y’all reference dgd, so random! I love that band so much.
Dude! Your videos are so awesome. This is a great film. Thank you for providing this amazing content for free on here. I hope people realize how much time and effort goes in to what you do. Much love brother! Cheers!
Great vid! Well done. Where is the link to the video of the Fly Recipe at 38:00?
It should be down in the description or on the channel!
It takes a lot of work to be able to get in there!
I agree about your comments about catch and release and catch and cook. There is a time and place for both. 100% I recently caught my first true native golden in the siera it was awsome.
Congrats on the native golden!! That must have been quite the hike! C&R is good but non native trout taste damn good haha
I have to say I made this hike in the winds in the late seventies and caught those awesome golden's back then. I do feel your pain it was an extremely tough hike but well worth it now I think I'm a little too old to make that track thanks for sharing
Of course Larry! So glad you enjoyed it!
