- This Is How I FIXED MY SPONGY BRAKE PEDAL FOR GOOD!!
In this video I show how I was able to fix my spongy brake pedal on my 1995 GMC Suburban K1500 OBS GMT400. Since I purchased this truck the brakes have always been spongy. I've changed the brakes twice before which did improve the braking performance but it never improved the brake pedal sponginess. This time I decided rather than just replacing the pads and rotors I was going to replace everything and do a full disc brake system restoration. It was a success.

You did this all as a blind man!? That’s impressive!

I guess Im kind of randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to watch new tv shows online?

LOL!!! your wife is very very funny....you ought to put her in every video as the "Tester" In Charge! great video!! BTW, most women hate to coast, they ride the gas petal right up to the Light or Stop Sign!!!
Haha absolutely agree!
Its cause they don't have to fix anything. My father always said a woman is the biggest child in the house. I never understood it until I moved in with one 🤣
Even worse when they ride the brakes, or the clutch if they can actually drive a stick.
Whenever I see a car for sale that says "lady driven", I run.

If wife approves then you have done well. Thanks for sharing!
Happy wife, happy life.!
The first step should have been to flush the brake fluid.
All that he did led to changing the brake lines. At that age, that's important.
Bleed the brakes
And to quit shouting at the camera.
She's gorgeous. You're such a lucky guy. And the truck is beautiful too. Awesome.
Should have said, "she is gorgeous. You are such a lucky guy. And the wife is ok too" 🤣 just kidding

Yeah she's hot, good job man. Tbh I cant imagine being married to a 5/5 or lower, it must be hell. You snagged a solid 8 bro.

im offended by your comment, and i totally agree.
Silly you.
Ahhhh but you will be the seat belt of a car/truck owned by a 350 pound man who doesn’t like to wear shirts while driving in Florida weather 😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣👌👌👌
Spongy brake pedal could be most likely air bubbles in the brake lines. Bleeding the air bubbles out is more easier than replace the brake pads system.
slpip 1990 Lincoln town car had a lot of air bubbles in the line once I removed all the air
No more spongy
Brake pedal totally agree
he sure put a lot of money in that vehicle lol
@@tiger.6509 why replace an entire vehicle when maintaining will help keep it feeling "like new" and last a long time.
An example would be if you get tired of your home, then you can simply move to a new home or remodel the home you already have.

"Fixed brake pedal"
-how?
"Thrown new unnecessary parts all over it".
-oh, sure... (facepalm)
Brakes were 24 years old..... it was time to rebuild them unless you want to take a gamble at old worm brakes.
All this guy's videos are just shoddy quality dart throw repairs and he gets to throw all these parts on because he's an affiliate.
Replaced the whole brake system. Front and rear pads and calipers. Rubber lines. Master cylinder. Hydro-boost. Everything installed correctly. Spongy... super spongy brake pedal. It’s HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! 🤦🏻♀️ vacuumed system, conventional bleed. Repeat. Still bad!
I'm experiencing the same thing with my 03 alero 2.2L 4C please comment back if you've found the solution.
“woooooooo”
barrel rolls suburban*
haha, i miss farris in videos! great work jimmy, you basically have that suburban built up like a new SUV.
Wow.. very loud and animated presentation... What's with the sun shades? Great content anyway.. nice to see a vintage vehicle being taken care of. I have a 95 S10 Blazer with 330k miles....
I’ve seen a lot of people remove the abs in that generation. I have an ‘88 Chevy Silverado c3500 and personally have never had an issue with the spongy brakes, I guess I got lucky
All 1 tons then had hydro boost. That's exactly why you don't suffer with that
@@jacobking4106 not true. There was a non-hydroboost HD brake system that swaps right in, you can find the parts at any auto parts chain store. The only part you can't get anymore is the proportioning valve, you have to get a used one and have it rebuilt or have a regular one rebuilt with a stronger spring.
The flex lines more than likely fixed the spongy feeling. Over time the lines break down. If you could see lines when pressing brake pedal they actually expand in diameter, thus creating spongy feeling. Good work Jimmy.
Yes, they definitely need to be replaced after 24 years of service!
I have stainless braided lines and fresh fluid on my 4x2 gmt400 rcsb with a 4.3l with 65k miles that has spongy brakes.
@@theautumnwind2152 keep bleeding brakes.
@@yamhammer I appreciate the input but maybe I should be more clear. No more bleeding is necessary. Once the brakes are engaged the pedal feels very firm and stops quite well. The problem is the relatively large amount of pedal travel required before brake engagement occurs. This was by design from gm. They called it a "low drag" system that saved o.1 mpg or some such nonsense. This was not a problem with hydroboost equipped vehicles.
Every time I see her I say "I recognize her from somewhere"... then I saw her IG and realized it was from the Orbit gum commercial.
No matter what!
I have never heard brake hose called a flex line before. You spent waaaaaaayyyyyy too long making your point that the truck stopped better. Any vehicle that is 20 years old is going to need fluid flushes of every fluid in the vehicle. Including brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission/transaxle fluid and filter. Locks and hinges should be lubricated on all doors including hood and trunk. Nobody does this stuff because they have old cars because they can't afford a newer car or because they don't care if their car needs nor do they believe their car needs this stuff. Your brakes could also have a bad ABS unit making them spongy.
Jimmy, you are a God sent! I've been having the same exact problem with my 2017 Ford expedition. After replacing a master cylinder, brake booster, abs module, brake pads, rotors, speed sensors and all 4 hubs, your solution is the most logical. It never dawned on me to replace the caliper, hardware (slide pins) and flex hoses but it makes sense. Ford couldn't even figure out what was causing the spongy brake pedal. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your video👍👍👍👍👍
Can you do more shows of just your wife and you are always behind the camera? You can narrate but just never show yourself, again.
Bro get your damn sunglasses off
Why? Who cares?
I've seen alot of people talk about upgrading the master cylinder. Glad to finally see a video on the more logical fix. Keep up the good work. I have a 95 Tahoe and love these videos.
Everyone who upgrades the master usually already replaced everything else and ran out of other options
Hey, I just wonder how you are so lucky to marry such a beautiful woman! ?
Jimmy what's the matter with you? all the neat projects and modifications you've done and tried to your truck over the years and you won't do the simple master cylinder upgrade? you're out of your mind. That makes absolutely ZERO sense, take the advice of fellow Chevy/ GMC owners and just do it. Additionally don't forget to do the rear flex line above the rear differential.😊
Rear brake adjustment plays a big role also
Nine out of ten guys don't realize how much the braking feel is determined by the REAR brakes. Many cars and trucks in the 80s-90s-00s were disc front and drum rear. Those drums better be right. The techs in many tire and brake shops today were born after the drum brakes faded from the scene. Better make sure anybody working on your drum brakes is solid on the details.
So basically the front brakes do more braking than the rears.
As always, great video Jimmy! I think the most important part that you replaced was your lines! Those rubber hoses after so many years when you put pressure to them they actually expand so that expansion causes you to have that spongy feel because of the give therefore that was probably the biggest key to getting rid of the spongy feel. I’ve done many that way and it seems to be what the common denominator is in between replacing all those parts together or individually. Thanks for the videos!
My wife got into my 74 Nova with 4 wheel drum manual brakes. When she pushed the pedal, she was like 😳. But she got used to it 😂
hey Bug - the OLD days _ before they Power brakes at Engine vac _ assist . dam old drums @ spring loaded Mech -
Your wife is pretty. You are a very lucky guy. Keep the fix it yourself videos coming. I love em. I have a 1996 Chevrolet S10 Pickup. Your videos help a lot.
Bleed your brakes yo
He did lol
Wow Jimmy ! You know it's Great when your Wife says it feels like it's Brand New. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad your Brakes are good to go again. The Complete Brake Fluid system flush is very important. Thank you. Bill
Yes, I'm very happy with the result. Thanks!
Yep step one ..fluid replacement...step two ...the master cylinder....step three ..the wheel cylinders and step 4...the lines. Is that a fair stepwise solution for the average Joe
Jimmy, you definitely achieved your wife goals. Your lady is pretty, shapely and charming. She and your children should always be your best work!
and she will leave you - Jimmy !!! justas soon as you have enough Money and 2 kids . Welcome to the white american women World >> Starter husband
For many fords the issue is often the ABS PUMP
You answered that question at the end of the video incorrectly. “Honey can I start driving this and you drive the Envoy?” Yes honey...anything for you and your safety.
Is that your wife on the Orbit gum commercial?lol...
It is lol
She got ya at the beginning drive.👻💥
Good job ! 👍
And entertaining. 🎬
Lots of GMs have a spongy pedal. You can fix it with stainless steel flex lines. Spongy pedal is often times caused by sticky calipers too so cleaning and lubing the slide pins makes a big difference. If it's still spongy then there's air in the system.
I totally agree about using quality brake parts. However, the CRC product is not for everyone. Here is the response from CRC technical support when I asked:
"Thank you for choosing CRC Products. In some vehicles, such as domestics, yes, this can be used for the caliper pins. In other vehicles, however, such as Japanese vehicles, it can have an effect on the rubber. That is why some manufacturers will recommend a silicone paste on the slide pins. To be on the safe side, we recommend using a silicone paste such as our dielectric grease for the caliper slide pins, but a brake and caliper grease on all the other lubrication points. Let us know if you have any questions."
That's ur daughter not ur wife
Ewww....
HAS to be daughter
I have to see a therapist now because I am emotionally traumatized. I didn't know I was going to be yelled at for 13 minutes by a guy wearing sunglasses inside a closed garage. I was just trying to watch a video about how to fix a spongy brake pedal. Otherwise, great video!
People love ya, Jimmy. 60K. Pretty good. Keep em comin'
Great info, I am going to give it a try on mine, I have an Envoy which seem to be known for crappy brakes, which is probably very true, you see a lot of them in the junk yard with the front end all banked up. I appreciate the info, but, you are way too animated.
13:16 to save some time
Talk about gilding the Lily!!! FFS!
BTW that brake fluid is as black as coffee. You invested in new pads, rotors, and calipers without touching that sludge! Bravo!
I did my brake, just the way you did it, it's a great feeling like a brand new car
I had the same issue with my 2005 F150. I changed the lines with steel braided and it took out all of the sponge. I had them all custom made and they were cheaper then the OEM rubber lines. Glad you got your system wife approved though. More importantly, safer for the family.
I thought stainless steel lines was the answer. Turns out, it's basic maintenance with quality parts. Well, add stainless steel lines and basic maintenance then. Once I added stainless to my very first ride. Every vehicle after.
Good job man.
I have the same truck and my brakes are awful even after putting in a NBS modern truck master cylinder. I’m thinking that I’m going to have to remove the old ABS module, which is probably faulty at this point.
All due respect, but that caliper slide grease will be like glue in 6 months.
BEST IS SILGLIDE , NAPA MADE BY AGS .
Imagine doing all this AND upgrading the master cylinder. That’d be a great brake pedal😂. Tbh it’s way simpler and cheaper to upgrade to the nbs master cylinder. Assuming all of your brake parts are still in good shape.
Newer lYear Master Cylinder Upgrades Have the same 1.25" Cylinder Bore as the Original Masters Cylinders?
Yet Cost Twice as Much Money as th)e Originals Equipment?Only Difference i see is Newer Master Cylinder Has More Fluid Capacity??
Thanks for update on Flex Line Change Out
And full System Line Bleed out.
There is a Hidden Covered Bleeder port on side of Kelsey / Hayes ABS Module to Remove Air.
Tedious but Great Job....
OMG my 2017 has spongy brakes and when we are trailering our boat and back down the ramp to the lake it scares the s#@$ out of my. Some years ago had a 1998 burb and the brake line burst and brakes failed so I have PTSD about this.
You’re a lucky man jimmy
Yeah she's prob annoying AF like most women, but at least she's a 8/10
Master cylinders like many critical parts rust, and could be cured easily and cheaply by manufacturers. The entire car could be treated for rust by as well. Why dont they consider this as a marketing strategy?
Short term planning.
Spongy brake pedal is 9 times out of 10 air or old fluid which has absorbed water ( hydroscpoic) in the system if all components check out okay. Cheapest 1st try bleeding system.
Nice job Jimmy, dude your wife is funny
Haha! Thanks!
The car or him catching her? lol
@@loganladue2 nice job on the car. Side note, wife is funny
Hello Jim or Jimmy I’m not trying to insult you but that’s what your wife called you lol I have to say this was one of your best videos I laughed almost to the whole video especially when your wife was driving I was not laughing at her I was laughing at the things that she was saying and doing especially at the very end when she thought a child ran across the street how she yelled and I was not expecting that lol that has to be the funniest thing ever on RUclips. But Mr. Jen or Jimmy I will take your advice but one thing I was gonna tell you regarding the desk sometimes I find out that General Motors buys it from same place that makes them in China for everyone else except the stamp GM original parts on it not only the desk but a lot of their aftermarket parts over 10 years GM has somebody else makes them and then they turn around and sell them and they make a hell of a profit, there’s other companies that make just as good or even better parts I just don’t wanna name them because I don’t remember the names but I think one of them is a Borg Warner I think that’s one manufacturer and then Napa has theirs made from some manufacture in India if I’m not mistaken. Let Mr. JAIME I have to tell you something you are a very very lucky man to have such a beautiful wife and happy smiling wife all the time that is a blessing in itself and remember treat your way as you treat the church as the Bible says you will be rewarded she will give you children she will give you happiness until the day you die so never lie or cheat on your wife and you will always have a happy relationship. God bless you your family and friends and I pray to the Lord Jesus Christ to bring you lots of love peace and prosperity and longevity and I wish 90% of couples in America would just like you and your wife I’m sorry I forgot her name but God bless y’all stay safe and remember repent Jesus Christ is coming very soon very very soon. ✝️✝️✝️
Swap master cilinder from 00 to 04 tahoe or silverado 99 to 02 huge diference
She's gorgeous and very sweet. Looks really different with her hair braided. Quit telling her how to drive. You wanted her opinions. How did you score a babe like her? Please do a video on that. One more thing... QUIT YELLING THROUGHOUT YOUR VIDEOS.
Bruh literally all you have to do to save some money and only spend like $20 is grease the slide pins and completely bleed out the old factory brake fluid😂😂
Not trying to be rude but this guy is such a guessing mechanic if that makes sense. He just replaces everything then tells us what worked and what kindof worked.
tl:dr? first seven and a half minutes is just 'how great the fix is' stuff, after that he finally changes the brake fluid, just like most car manufacturers recommend changing the brake fluid every two years. It's spooky, it's almost as though the car manufacturers know what they're talking about!!! Still tl;dr? - change the brake fluid, like anyone over 16 does to fix spongy brakes, er, that's it.
I agree with you on everything 💯 BUT I still think the master cylinder upgrade is the end all fix for these I did everything entire new brake system same but eventually went back to same feeling. all oem too ac Delco
I always wanted A Chevy Suburban…. Lord knows if I ever get Rich.? Im buying me one….. what the hell.?? Maybe 2…🧐
hey, another thing to look for on older GM truck vehicles that GM did to compensate for their brake OVER TRAVEL -- they made a THICKER rubber brake pedal pad that was about 1/2 inch thicker than the original stock one. It didn't FIX a thing, it just moved what you felt 1/2 inch higher so it felt like less travel.
Great video Jim! Love seeing Farris in your videos. 🙂
Hotwife one road
MORE FARRIS MORE FARRIS MORE FARRIS MORE FARRIS, OK SORRY JIMMY, NOT HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Thanks dude
I had a chevy, same year, changed the MC 3 time's, still spongy, just got rid of it, still spongy. Bled it, whole 9 yards.
This is not how you troubleshoot spongy brakes. Happy for you that you were able to resolve the issue by just throwing money at the calipers and brake lines but that's not how everyone should approach troubleshooting a spongy brake pedal. Testing for leaks at all four corners, the lines, the master cylinder and brake booster is Step 1, then cleaning and lubricating the existing caliper pins, piston calipers/boots, backplates of the pads would be Step 2. Then bleed new fluid through all four corners for Step 3, then check the condition of the rubber brake hoses. But just buying new calipers was probably a complete waste of money. Calipers should only be replaced if they are stuck or are leaking and you don't know how or don't want to repair them. Newer vehicles with ABS will most likely have a bad ABS Pump if you have a spongy pedal or the pedal goes all the way to the floor and you have already exhausted the basic troubleshooting steps for leaks and checked for blown fuses/relays, faulty wiring/connectors, ground straps etc.
Chevy built limited addition 2000 Z71 Tahoe's on the gmt400 platform. I have the exact same problem.
So you didn't pinpoint the faulty part of brake system, you just threw away everything old except for master cylinder and installed new. Im glad that your car is now in acceptable state. However this video isn't worth anything as long as its about fixing sinking pedal.
I'd like to watch this video but this guy keeps yelling at me
He's weird.
Obviously this guy doesn't know the quality and craftsmanship of General Motors. His vehicle won't last him 4 months unless he put a lot time and money in repairs to keep it running
Jimmy, I don;t know how old you are but spongy brakes and no fluid lose, brake bleeding should be the first thing not the last, your missuses right leg muscle should have told you!
what about the rear brakes? I think flushing the system did the trick. Air in the brake system could cause sponge brakes.
Dude..... lower the volume, you don't have to scream every word. A normal conversational tone is fine.

So spend fifty to get results or spend $500 wow amazing!!!!!
