Well said Hardy. One of the true entertaining channels on RUclips, featuring a true gentleman. I am genuinely surprised (but secretly pleased) mainstream TV haven't approached Pat.
Pat you are the only youtuber whose videos I click like on before I even watch them. Always good quality content from you mate...cheers Russ (Australia)
Great video Pat, that brought back a lot of memories. I'm about 10 years older than you, so I started camping in the early 60s, also starting with the Scouts. It's interesting to see how much further advanced your early gear was than mine - a waxed canvas single skin tent from Millets with wooden poles, a separate groundsheet - no matress - and a sleping bag made by my Mum from an old army blanket. I did have an early Camping Gaz stove but usually opted for an open fire whenever I could. The rucksack, again from Millets, was canvas with a steel frams and leather straps. Great times. Like you, I've had many changes of gear since then, but I still love the Trangia nad use it sometimes. I had a Quasar too. Thanks for sharing your memories Pat. I look forward to seeing many more of your adventures. Just don't get arrested! Noel
Hi Noel, thought you would like this one, must admit it brought back great memories just sorting through the photos, each one only seemed a few years ago, not 40. I think end of the sixties all new gear appeared, new materials and the start of lightweight kit appearing. Glad the vidio is bringing back memories to so many, good to look back, I certainly l oved making this vidio, all the best Pat
(From France) : Thank you Pat, it was such a moment of relaxation for me to watch your video yesterday evening. You are a generous human being with a lot of quality and humility, each of your words, the way you present yourself...make it obvious for me.
@@patrickdickinson6492 I got into camping from the amry cadets love it being outdoors still try to go when I can it's the best feeling from freedom camping 🏕 😄
Possibly the most in depth longest running tent review in history, the Trailmaker Tent after 44 years of testing. Love it! Love the unbiased comparison to modern gear. Love the historical review of both gear and styles of camping popular throughout the years as well. Really just highly entertaining and informative, well done sir!
A fantastic piece of nostalgia. Four decades certainly fly by so quickly! It would be great to see more photos and descriptions of your European road trips.
Love your going back in time... l was born in 68 and started camping with my family in 71... it’s something that just gets in your blood and really never leaves.... l enjoy it to this day.. great to see that you still have your gear after all the years... and it’s proof of the old saying “ they just don’t make em like they use to” Thank you for sharing ..
Ah, the memories - still got half that kit in my cupboard! We'd go on week-long treks over the Bens with 40 lbs on our backs. These days I can be much more comfortable with a base weight of 10 lbs. So not really the good old days...
Hi, yes the gear back then was so well made, yet a bit heavy, as you know I still use alot of my old gear, like going camping with old friends...... thanks Pat 😊
@@patrickdickinson6492 True. But I don't really miss the huge brass Primus, the rubberised cotton LiLo, the cotton anorak that would freeze rigid in the cold, the heavy army surplus mess tins, and the soaking wet cotton tent with thick aluminium poles (remember those old Blacks mountain tents?) It was all perfectly functional, but boy that stuff weighed a LOT. We ditched it all without much regret when the new synthetic kit began to hit the market.
Great video, those camping pictures brought back some memories for me too, I was the kid though. Sitting in the back of a mini metro with two week's food and a tent on the roof, driving through the alps down to st tropez and port grimaud for a two week holiday.
It brings back memories from when I was a scout and enjoying camping with canvas tents big and heavy but indestructible great times thanks for bringing me back in time good memories I’ll never forget, john from Sheffield in England Great Britain
Hi John, yes they were great days those early days of camping, and each trip learning so much, and so many of us first started our camping adventure in the scouts..... thanks Pat 👍
Brought back a few memories there! My first real camp trip was at loch Ness. I was aged 16, 50 years ago! I fell in love with camping that experience! Best life ever!
Cheese that was scary, it was like watching my life through someone else's eyes. Started off 45 yrs ago in bivvies, paid for by the Gov, wink. Then big family frame tents, basically scaffolding with a tarp thrown over lol. Then caravans and back to tents. I can't walk as I used to, so no hiking for me any more. I motorcycle camp now, use an Eurohike backpacker 2 DLX, the double of you 40 year old tent. Doubt it will last as long as yours though. It was fantastic walking down memory lane with you Patrick, many thanks for my memory flashbacks, it still seems like yesterday, yup. Big thumbs up from me.
I think alot of us have followed a similar path on our camping adventures, and even though we are older we still enjoy our outdoor adventures, great to have you along, all the best Pat
What a lovely trip down memory lane. I had the same jacket, tent, rucksack, stove and thermarest and they never let me down. Field and Trek use to be a great company and a reliable source of information and equipment. Many thanks
Yes loved there catalogue, really got me into wild camping reading and comparing all the gear available , some great gear available back then....... thanks Pat 👍
All those happy days you talk about will be just starting for one of the many many people you inspire Patrick. What a gift to be able to pass on to so many people. Great to see and hear about all your past times.
Brillaint vid pat!! thanks for sharing your memories! anybody with me fancy setting up a petition? to get pat a weekly camping programme slot on bbc1 i know id tune in for sure haha cheers again great vid.
I helped signwrite a 'Field & Trek bus back in my apprentice days 1979 as a coachpainter signwriter..still have the picture..black hand painted double decker with yellow writing.....as for a Capri mine was an old 1977 16L..Daytona yellow. Yours look like the Bodie and Doyle style.
One of your best, Pat ! Brought back some memories. I was off of Vietnam with the USNavy in 1975. Lost my long hair in boot camp in 1970. Long ways from my Ontario Canada roots. Thank You for that stroll down memory lane. Delightful !! Woody.
Absolutely brilliant, I got married and divorced in the 70s, I guess I should have stuck to camping which has held me in good stead! Thanks for sharing your very entertaining adventures which are much appreciated. Very best wishes....
I remember at my first campings in end 70`s. (Germany) I bought my first motorcycle for public roads, so I drove bigger tours and need cheap overnights. So I´ve done wildcamping, campgrounds, or camping by motorcycle driver meetings My camping gear was very cheap, because small money income. (like 400 pounds/month.) My tent was small, but rain proof. My sleeping bag was good, only for spring and summer. Cheap, but good gas stove. And a petroleum laterne for light in the tent. The most bad, was bad raining clothes for motorcycle driving. But the good one was too expensive for me. My tent was too small for me and all the gear. Better for backpackers. Also my saddlebags on the motorcycle were too cheap made. But solid boxes were too expensive for me. At this time no Gore-tex, no LED lights and torches, no Fleece Clothings, no Internet, no cell phones, etc. And good sleeping bags were more expensive, as now. But a good, warm sleeping bag is one of the most important items. Now I´m age 58, and still camping and motorcycle driving. Also cheap, but better gear. A pop up iglu tent - ready in five minutes. It works like an umbrella. From a dealer for half price, because some little parts missing. No big deal. A warm sleeping bag, down to zero grade celsius comfortable. (used, for like ten pounds) some good gas stoves, for very cheap prices. And bought adapters, for using very cheap gas canisters. An LED Camping laterne, charging via solar or A/C, with a torch and a fan included. Runs up to 5 hours and more. I got also solid boxes and topcase very cheap, where I have dreamed of it. And - so nice - I bought a small gas heater. For heating the tent, and to dry clothes. And - most important - used motorcycle clothes, who are waterproof. So I must not put rain gear on, when it starts raining. You can get it cheaper, because via Internet. But I use also a petroleum laterne. It looks so romantic, and remember me about old times.
Fantastic comments and you sound like you have had great adventures on your motorcycle, could talk to you for ages but so many comments to answer, really enjoyed that, all the best Pat
I used to live a rain sound it made me sleep better. I still open the window to hear it. I love my camping as well. Vango type tent used. Lake district. Peaks. Dartmoor. Swansea gruffs. Good old times. Loved every bit of your time under and in your tents.
great video .been camping since I was 6 months old born in 1974 used to love the old canvas tents in the 80s got modern vango now. still got some old cooking pots of my grand parents camping days .
Pat you are a star. Trousers relatively new at twenty years old. Just like myself. lol. I was devestated last year when my Highlander 60 70 ltr cant remember now started to come apart. The stitching was rotten in places. On closer inspection it was beyond repair. I bought it new in 1986 and had been on many an adventure over its 32 year life. My first tent was a old silver blue campari in 78. It did ok for a few years and was used as a play tent till it was rotten. I now have a Soulo and a Tarra. After almost 40 years i have got some good gear. Most of my old gear was given to friends kids who were starting out camping and i am proud in today's society They still have most of the stuff. Or upgraded and passed it on to another friend. I am sure your tent was the same as one a friend had. It was a dark almost black. Im sure it was made by Blacks of Edinburgh. Absolutely fantastic as always. All the best till the next adventure.
Hi Alan, yes that old gear might of been heavy but it was made to last, and apart from the weight modern gear is still based on the same principle, just cost a fortune now. We, ll have to see what our Soulo, spare like in 40 years, nice to talk, all the best Pat
Another excellent video Pat. My and my brother in law went down Megatron last week thanks to your videos. Good job we weren't down there on Thursday/Friday this week(!). Loved hearing about your tents and the memories that go with them. I admire your ability to hang onto old gear for so long, wish I had the space for that. Looking forward to the next one!
Hope you had a great trip down Megatron, amazing place, I reckon with the amount of water going through this last few days, must of filled some of the smaller parts to the roof, all the best Pat
hi Pat, I'm originally from Prague, Czech Republic, but living in Ireland down Kerry. I was born in 1973 and start early camp with daddy....just a sleeping bag and plastic bag......so under the sky !!! Start camping......about 4 years ago again.....love it!!! ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR BACK TIME CAMPING VIDEO !!! NOSTALGIA GET ME !!! KEEP up your FANTASTIC WORK!!!! your new subscriber from Ireland !!! Patrick Czech
Great that you have subbed and welcome to my channel, hole your enjoying you time in Ireland, a place I have never been. Wild camping such a great way to spend your spare time, all the best Pat
Patrick it was our pleasure to share in you camping memories, loved to the the two Capri in various parts of Europe, many thanks for the video . As many others have said .... you are a star of RUclips and may you long continue to entertain us with you obvious joy of camping and the Peak District, cheers DaveH
Great idea. Great video. In the '70s I used a Camp Trails packframe , now up in a big cupboard. Along the way i've given away my Force10 tent but hear it's still used. My 1970s sleeping bag (4 season made in NZ) is still living in a bivvy bag. All the best.
This brings back memories. We tend to think of all the improvements in technology over the years but In the early 70s I bought a pretty expensive ridge tent from Godley's in Manchester. I guess it was a one man tent but it slept two regularly and comfortably. It was made from material you would expect to see today, extremely thin but tough synthetic ripstop type fabric. The inner, also synthetic material had a built-in groundsheet that seemed to have some rubber like membrane to keep the damp out but it was still extremely thin. It had three very light aluminium poles (two for the front and one small one for the bottom end) and the whole thing packed up into a package that was so light and small, it permanently lived strapped to the base of my old Karrimor framed rucksack. I've owned some lightweight high tech tents over the years but that seemed years ahead of it's time. I wish I could remember who it was made by. Thanks for that blast from the past!
Thanks an good to look back on old times and adventures, sounded a great tent well before it's time, the designs were good then, only advantage they have now is the modern lightweight materials, great times and great memories, all the best Pat
Thank you wonderful memories we took a transit with 12 down to the pecos de europa. Did pennine way coast to coast and many more around 79/80. You have a wicked sense of humour and a genuine nature. Thanks 4 jogging the memories. X
Hi John great to remember past times and adventures, your trip in the transit certainly was a adventure. Seems along time since I was in France or anywhere in Europe due to Covid restrictions, I have my Covid jab on Monday so hopefully things might start and get better, great to reminisce with you, thanks Pat
Thanks for the video. A good trip down memory lane. It takes me back to even earlier kit. Blacks Icelandic sleeping bag, karimat, Saunders tent, a primus stove, ventile jackets, and cotton duck rucksack. I was fit enough to carry it then!
Eyup from Derbyshire. Spot on! I had almost forgotten about my scouting days and it all came back in a heartbeat, thank you so much. Work and a busy life sometimes prevent you from stopping and reflecting on past times. Watching your film brought back so many happy memories. Then you hit us with the fashion! wow I was itching just thinking about wearing woolen garments (normally) knitted by my mum again. I recall also have a tartan jacket at peak 80'. I was a right bobby dazzler!
Wow, this brings back memories. I'm 55 woman who started backpacking in 1981. My husband and I did alot of packing in the mountains right here in Wyoming. We had the orange Thermarest sleep pad too. And used a A frame tent. When we just camped we used the old Coleman pump up stove and lanterns. Great video Pat! Thank you for sharing your memories and gear with us.😊
Thanks for follow my journey back in time, alot of us have followed a similar path and remember the items of gear well. Love my Coleman lantern such a great atmosphere when your sat round it, great to hear from you, all the best Pat
Brilliant video thanks for showing us. I have no tent now it wore out but still have my bluet gas stove a cooking pot and fry pan since 1963 and my small pen knife a Taylor Eye Witness with a bone handle, it pays to buy quality , lasts a lifetime. Happy camping 🇬🇧👍🍻
My goodness,Saunders Jetpacker,Karrimor Jaguar & the old trusty Trangia, what great memories, the gear might be better technically but your enthusiasm is ageless,Atb Colin P.
Thank you for that it was a wonderful journey, our first backpacking tent 50 years ago was a two man Blacks single pole tent, cost a fortune and was very heavy. I started back into backpacking 30 years ago, Karrimore Rucksack, and, great to hear your mention, a Robert Saunders tent, Satellite plus. At that time Saunders was something of a pioneer using then modern materials and my tent was still two man but less than half the weight of the Blacks tent. My backpacking career is over but looking at modern tents i don’t see anything much better that my Saunders tent except for the odd oz less in weight. In those days i Backpacked with my godson and he is still using his Saunders tent.
Watched this when it was first posted & keep coming back to it.Brilliant wee trip down memory lane.(luv the old Ford Orion) Great thing about Pats vids is they stand up to multiple viewings👍
Just when you think youve seen every camping vid on YT..Pat comes out with this genius idea.Took me back in time to when i was wee & camping in Scotland. I Forsee many repeat viewings on this one. Cheers Pat👍
I appreciate that!….it is a place I feel so comfortable with, it can be so simple , just walk out with your gear, then you are awarded with a fantastic night out, ……..thanks Pat
I camped throughout then 70's and 80's and never had any gear this nice. Just did not have the money. This is very nice stuff for the period. Thanks for the video.
I started camping in a Woolies A framed tent ⛺️ in the back garden. It was white. All the 6 weeks holidays. Then bought stuff in the post from Cornwall (maybe Taunton leisure) or somewhere. Then started buying stuff at CCC in Sheffield. Thanks for the reminiscing 👍🏻 Loved it. 🙏🏻
Brilliant. Vid pat I am 64. And can relate exactly to your experiences almost a carbon copy of my camping career all the old gear so heavy by today's standard but good reliable kit that's stood the test of time . The field and trek catalogue so exiting looking at the new gear that came out as you say the outdoorsmans bible.. Great days golden memories sill got some of my old kit still quite usable and well looked after.great to share your journey pat some great photos as well thanks for taking me down memory lane .
Great twist on camping. I've still got an Argos bought sleeping bag thats kept me warm on Hellvellyn, two A frame tents, Trangia set and assorted stuff from the 80's from my TA days. All still OK and rock solid. Now I live in France and I'm using much of it again.
HA HA, Patrick you have brought it all back to me.... I am two years older than your good self. I was in the Scouts and also have great memories.... I still have my original tent that my Mum and Dad brought me that I used in the Scouts. It is called a "sand Fly tent" use in the second world war and was purchased at our local army surplus store. The arm used it in the desert and was small enough to pitch under a tank!!. The first job was to apply a water proof solution... several coats if I remember to stop the rain coming in.. It is canvas weights and ton and the colour is brown so it would blend into the desert. It consist of two fix 3ft long wooden poles with just canvas loops for pegging out and a fly net at each end of the tent that you had to crawl under..... great day... great memories.. keep you Videos coming.. let the young ones have the computers... we know what the best life consists of mateRegardsIan
Hi Ian lovely comments, so many people on here been in the scouts, were we got our love of camping and the great outdoors. Tents were heavy but they certainly lasted a long time, all the best Pat
well Pat,i stumbled upon you somehow,i love camping,i was 8 in 1975,even lived at limefitt park up kirkstone pass as a teen, thousands of campers every year,i had a wonderful wander down memory lane with you, thank you very much!!!
Hi and I think once you go camping, and you enjoy it then it's a hobby for the rest of your life. Glad you enjoyed the journey down memory lane, certainly brought back a lot of memories for me, thanks Pat
Five years back, I finally retired a tent (Holubar 2-person winter expedition mountaineering tent with inner, outer and built in floor) I bought in 1967, due to the tent getting severely damaged by mildew in a leaky outside storage facility. Had it not been mildewed, I'd be using it today. We can still get methyl (wood) alcohol lots of places, used in wallpaper burners. I have a Hilleberg Soulo also, and a Luxe Megahorn tipi with a stove--ah, luxury.
All i remember about camping as a child in the Uk was how cold I always was when sleeping. Nowadays I have the warmest kit / sleeping system i can afford. Luckily materials have moved on a lot since the 70's and 80's. Still hate the cold but luckily I have the right gear now. Thanks for another great video Pat xx
Camping and feeling cold is no fun, I sometimes wonder how backpackers with ultra light kit manage to keep warm. I don't mind carrying extra weight in winter knowing that I, ll be comfortable and warm, it can make wild camping in winter so enjoyable, thanks Pat
Smashing video Pat, brings back some good memories. I was 25 in 1970! eeek. Am watching it from beside a beach in South of France, it's been chucking it down all day😀. Luckily am in a campervan these days. Thanks again for the time and effort you put in to make us smile. Tony
Another of your videos I thoroughly enjoyed Patrick. I didn't laugh once, but I'm still smiling as I write :) Different memories, same era. Shine on Patrick. Douglas.
What a time that mustve been to be alive! I'm 32 so grew up just before the world was taken over by technology and still had some great times adventuring. Nothing compared to your euro trips but great times none the less. It's a shame the majority of kids and teenagers nowadays will grow up having much less adventures in their lives.
Yes I, d like to think our childhoods were were we learnt about adventure, out in the woods, the trees the fields all day long, like you say no technology in those days, you just made your own fun, and I, am trying to re-live those days now, all the best Pat
It’s March 2024 and I’ve just started watching your videos Pat, this one was superb, now it’s back to 1976, I’m 16 years old and off to roar round the estate on my purple Yamaha FS1-E😂 Cheers and take care
Great to hear your enjoying my videos, this one, back on time was such a pleasure to make, took me back many years to when I was young, enjoy your time on your bike, but take care, you have many more years and adventures ahead of you...... thanks Pat
Great video. I started backpacking in the 70's and the kit you were reviewing was what I used including the fleece, the trangia, which we still have and my children use, and of course the mountain equipment sleeping back. All still in use today. Good luck with the cancer.
Thanks Tim great looking back at the old gear that many of us used, and still have in use today The future is looking good, thanks for your caring words, Pat
Thanks for sharing, good to hear the old kit is still working well, can wholeheartedly agree its about getting out there as best you can even if you can't afford or obtain high end kit its about the experience. I know my relatively budget kit keeps me warm and dry with good modern tents being half the weight of the 9lb one you mention so reasonably light weight, readily available and cheap at one 10th the cost of todays cutting edge kit. Today you pay more to save weight most times I find.
Hi Phil yes a lot of today's expensive gear is based on how lightweight it is, I know weight is important but just getting out there with whatever gear you an afford is the important thing, all the best Pat
Many thanks Patrick, fantastic video,A lovely reminder, but we used to go to Scotland Ireland Wales Cornwall, fishing all over and roughing it. Many thanks again, We had a Igloo tent that didn't last long, none did,we used to wear them out,or the wind finished them off. Keep well.Atb.
I'm about half-way through the video at this wrighting. It's amazing how camping gear hasn't changed all that much. Your tent set up is wonderful! You look wonderful with long hair! Your wife is a lovely lady. That camper tent is just WOW! The most recent tent I had purchased is a ten by twelve that was tall enough for me to be comfy standing up. We've had it since 1998. Since the hubby had gotten ill, we haven't used it as much as I would have liked. But, I digress. You are looking so well! And, this has been a wonderful journey with you. Thank you for sharing a part of your day with us!
It was great to share my camping journey through life, we both know life has its ups and downs, but we all have great memories to look back on, so nice of you to comment, thanks Pat
Thanks for sharing your memories Pat, really enjoyed the video and the old photos with very interesting commentary. It was great to see how your camping kit varied over the years to suit different stages of your life. Camping out is certainly in your blood mate.
Loved making this vidio, just sorting through the photos brought back great memories, only feels like yesterday.I think I will carry on camping until I drop, the day I can,y camp, well hopefully never get there, all the best Pat
That was a fantastic video Patrick. The haircuts, the cars and the memories. Thank you so much. Hope the treatment is going fine. Was there myself in 2018. Tough year for me but sorted now. Good to see you out and about.
glad to see your back at it, that rain reminds me of my mum's chip pan, if something would have happened to that pan we would have starved, chips every night except sunday, we had a change, mashed spud's, and my first tent was a force ten, and a swedish rucksack, still got the frame mark's on me back, Thanks patrick, look after yourself.
I remember camping in a similar tent with my Dad many years ago. Then we bought a Conway and camped as a family, 5 of us together. I used to help him put it up while my Mum, brother and sister waited in the car. Fun times. My Dad always said things were built to last in those days! Thanks Pat, you are a pleasure to watch as always. Thanks for sharing your special memories!
Welcome back Patrick and what a come back it's fantastic to see you back whith a fantastic video takeing us all back in time. To 1970s thank for doing this it's nice to see you again and look forward to many more adventure s
Loved this video Pat. Only discovered your work at the start of the year but your one of the best on RUclips. Good to see someone not trying to sell you something or ask for likes. Just someone showing us a passion and hobby and you do a great job at it. Glad your feeling a lot better and look forward to the next video
Thanks Pat for sharing these memories with us, so glad to see that you look well and are optimistic after your recent health problems. I now realise that we are the same age, but unfortunately due to physical health problems I am unable to get out into the wild, so I live my life vicariously through your videos. Thank you so much, Paul.
Magic. Pure magic. Some of my favourite photos are of the boys and girl in the Vendee (Isle de Noirmoutier at least a couple of times) and south of France. We used our own tent on the way down and hired a big tent from Eurosites if we weren't using a rusty motorhome. The boys enjoyed our own tent and sleeping in fields best as it turned out. :) You prove that good gear, looked after, lasts. Thanks for sharing the nostalgia Pat.
Yes it's great to look back, I think that's why I enjoyed making this video so much, the photographs brought so many memories of happy care free days, where did it all go...... thanks Pat
Hallo again.Just thought I'd like to mention that you and your video's are very much part of my,our lives who watch. So your always in our thoughts I'm sure. Thanks for shareing part of your life with us.Be Blessed.
Hi there .. from a South African now living in Switzerland 😊. Now that was a great Blast from the Past (born 1950) .. thank you👍. I still have (and use) nearly all of my 70's Gear .. Backpacker Boulder and Canyon Backpacks (65 & 55 litre), Optimus 8R Hunter Petrol Stove, Army Dixies / Esbit Folding Stove / Knife-and-Fork-n-Spoon Set / Water Bottle and Mug (aka 'Fire Bucket') and Accompanying Webbing, Evernew Camping Bowl Set, 3-Pot Aluminium Billy Can Set, Benedorm '3 Season' and 'Light' Hollofill Sleeping Bags, a Salewa Down Bag (❤), 'Camp and Trail' Bag Cover, Swiss Army Knife and other odds and sods. The kids have 'requisitioned' long back, the rest of my 70's Gear, including my very first (60's) Canvas A-Frame Tent (tough as nails .. and heavy 🙄) and the 'Cadac' All Seasons Dome Tent. Once again, many thanks for bringing back the memories .. great ones 👍😊. All of the best regarding your Health going forward (I'm also a 'Survivor' .. although not on the intake side but down at the exhaust 😏 .. 10 years clear and counting 🙏😊). Take care .. Tommy
Great 10 years is great news, looking good for the future and I, am sure I, ll be the same. Recognise alot of the gear you mentioned, each item I remember well, glad it brought back happy memories, did the same for me, all the best Pat
Fabulous video Pat. Good to hear your stories of camping in times gone by. As a fan and owner of many vintage camping equipment it’s nice to see and hear your stories.
Thanks Matt, yes could not throw away my old gear, and glad I did,nt. it's all well made and a great design, especially the Trailmaker tent, I'll never part with it. Always good to look back to old times, and memories...... thanks Pat
Loved that, especially the photos. Brings back memories of camping at Porthmadog in my Grandads waxed canvass beast of a family tent. It’s easy to forget that the lightweight equipment we have now is a very recent trend. The first time a I walked the West Highland Way in 2005/2006 I gave hardly any thought to weight and lugged half a kitchen across Scotland. Anyway, thanks for the great videos.
Being born in 1975 in the north of England, this is a flashback to a time when I used to wander around the Peak District with my old man. Also still have a canvas backpack and tent that we used to use.
Your the most genuine character on RUclips. Love it!
Really nice of you to say, thanks Pat
Your comment sums things up well
Well said Hardy. One of the true entertaining channels on RUclips, featuring a true gentleman. I am genuinely surprised (but secretly pleased) mainstream TV haven't approached Pat.
@@BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOne You're so right! The mainstream media is a ghastly place to reside
I agree...I think most of us would be happy to have Patrick as a neighbour!
I felt privileged Patrick to be shown your memories.
Thank you

Wish I'd shown more gratitude at the time.
Wonderful stuff. Do you still camp or like me your legs don't work so well? This wild camping get a hold on you!

Thanks such nice comments, but such a lovely video to make, looking back to the good, old and alot simpler times, nice to talk, thanks Pat
Very creative, that was a fantastic idea. What I would have given to be taken camping like that. Just awesome! Thanks, that was a special one.
Thanks John, really took me back just looking at the photos, great times, great memories, all the best Pat
What a video absolutely fantastic glad you’re doing well onwards and upwards as they say look forward to your next time one
Thanks Andrew, I loved making this one, so many memories, thanks Pat
i only clicked because i was born in 75, one of the best videos ever, so many memories. looking forward to seeing more.
Glad you looked, loved making this one as it brought back so many memories thanks for watching, thanks Pat
A fantastic piece of nostalgia.
Four decades certainly fly by so quickly!
It would be great to see more photos and descriptions of your European road trips.
Thanks Mike yes never know may get them into another vidio one day, thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492 absolutely! Please do!
Yes Paul, loved making this video, great to look back brought back loads of memories, all the best Pat
Great story. Interesting to see the progression of cars too! The Capri was a great looking car.
I loved that Capri, best car I have ever had, all the best Pat
Ah, the memories - still got half that kit in my cupboard! We'd go on week-long treks over the Bens with 40 lbs on our backs. These days I can be much more comfortable with a base weight of 10 lbs. So not really the good old days...
Hi, yes the gear back then was so well made, yet a bit heavy, as you know I still use alot of my old gear, like going camping with old friends...... thanks Pat 😊
@@patrickdickinson6492 True. But I don't really miss the huge brass Primus, the rubberised cotton LiLo, the cotton anorak that would freeze rigid in the cold, the heavy army surplus mess tins, and the soaking wet cotton tent with thick aluminium poles (remember those old Blacks mountain tents?)
It was all perfectly functional, but boy that stuff weighed a LOT.
Wow Dave, St Tropez, we had some great times heading down there, its the place we always headed for, they were fantastic times, all the best Pat
Another fantastic film! Good to hear of your good health, Patrick. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks, so many memories making this one, thanks Pat
Patrick you are a little gem, this took me back years to better times, thank you so much for sharing. Cheers. Andy. Scotland.
Thanks Andy, sometimes great to look back to those happy carefree days, the memories will always be there, thanks Pat
I so wish I could fit into my 80's clothes, never mind my 70 clothes 😬😬
Are well, you must of been living good, thanks Pat
Brought back a few memories there! My first real camp trip was at loch Ness. I was aged 16, 50 years ago! I fell in love with camping that experience! Best life ever!
Yes same here Vanessa, my first camps were with the Scouts, but the seeds were down, and still enjoying it 50 plus years later, thanks Pat
Nice to see trip down memory lane. Them Capris 😍 I always wanted on of them 2.8 Laser. May had something to do with The Professionals
Yes minewastbesilver one, best car I have ever owned, great memories, all the best Pat
All those happy days you talk about will be just starting for one of the many many people you inspire Patrick. What a gift to be able to pass on to so many people. Great to see and hear about all your past times.
They were such great times probably because I was young, great times great memories, all the best Pat
Brillaint vid pat!! thanks for sharing your memories! anybody with me fancy setting up a petition? to get pat a weekly camping programme slot on bbc1 i know id tune in for sure haha cheers again great vid.

I was born on the first day of 1975, when you said nearly 50 years I was hoping you were wrong. ATB!
Where did it all go, great to look back though, all the best Pat
Fantastic Patrick! You certainly take care of your equipment. 40 years later still as good as new!, and what a handsome young man!
Thanks Kevin, nice comments, thanks Pat
Loving the Capris Pat!....great times!...and the hair... Heavy man!
Best and most exciting car I have ever had, wish I still had it, and the hair, all the best Pat
Yes best car I ever had. Ohh to have one now have you seen the price ££££lol no way.
One of your best, Pat ! Brought back some memories. I was off of Vietnam with the USNavy in 1975. Lost my long hair in boot camp in 1970. Long ways from my Ontario Canada roots. Thank You for that stroll down memory lane. Delightful !! Woody.
Wow scary place to be then, jealous of your Canadian winters, all the best Pat
Really enjoyed that, one of my favourites this one x
Thanks Shelly, great memories of simple days, pity could,nt of used some music of the era, bit of glam rock, all the best Pat
Absolutely brilliant, I got married and divorced in the 70s, I guess I should have stuck to camping which has held me in good stead! Thanks for sharing your very entertaining adventures which are much appreciated. Very best wishes....
Thanks David...great memories when i made this video,,,,the 70's were great thanks Pat
love that capri!
Thanks Matt my best car of all time, thanks Pat
Great to hear you reminiscing Pat. Brought back some memories of past wild camps for me. Thank you as always.
Thanks Andy, good to look back at some of the great times we had, hope we get back there soon, thanks Pat
I remember at my first campings in end 70`s. (Germany)
I bought my first motorcycle for public roads, so I drove bigger tours and need cheap overnights.
So I´ve done wildcamping, campgrounds, or camping by motorcycle driver meetings
My camping gear was very cheap, because small money income. (like 400 pounds/month.)
My tent was small, but rain proof.
(used, for like ten pounds)
some good gas stoves, for very cheap prices.
@@patrickdickinson6492 Hi Pat, I´m glad and happy to enjoy you with my comment.
I stay subscribed.
I used to live a rain sound it made me sleep better. I still open the window to hear it. I love my camping as well. Vango type tent used. Lake district. Peaks. Dartmoor. Swansea gruffs. Good old times. Loved every bit of your time under and in your tents.
Yes Stephen any time in a tent is agood time, even the sound of the rain sounds good knowing your safe and secure, all the best Pat
A national treasure. This should be on mainstream TV.
So kind of you to say, thanks Pat
great video .been camping since I was 6 months old born in 1974 used to love the old canvas tents in the 80s got modern vango now. still got some old cooking pots of my grand parents camping days .
Thanks Mike, such a amazing pastime, all the best Pat
Just catching up on your old videos. This was brilliant. I wish I camped more when I was younger. You constantly entertain us. Well done 👏
Yes those early days were great, a big new adventure back then, and alot more energy and fitter legs......thanks Pat
How have I previously missed this video ??? Absolutely loved that trip to the 70s. Simply amazing 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Paddy, loved making this one, so many memories, and great to look back...... thanks Pat
@@patrickdickinson6492
Another excellent video Pat. My and my brother in law went down Megatron last week thanks to your videos. Good job we weren't down there on Thursday/Friday this week(!). Loved hearing about your tents and the memories that go with them. I admire your ability to hang onto old gear for so long, wish I had the space for that. Looking forward to the next one!
Hope you had a great trip down Megatron, amazing place, I reckon with the amount of water going through this last few days, must of filled some of the smaller parts to the roof, all the best Pat
you are literally an inspiration to all of us who follow you!
Thanks Lewis, really nice of you to say thanks Pat
what a story, what a character, long may you live to show us how it's done.
Thanks David, great to camp with my old gear, thanks Pat

Thanks Dave, certainly brought back many memories for alot of people who started camping back then, thanks Pat
Nice to see a young Patrick and a surviving Patrick too. I can certainly tell you're a big Ford lover as well. Who doesn't love old Fords?
Great cars and great times, all the best Pat
Great trip down memory lane. Amazed that tent is still going strong!
Yes just feels like it was when I bought it, heavier fabric than today's modern materials, but maybe that's why it lasted so well.... thanks Pat 😊
Great idea. Great video.
In the '70s I used a Camp Trails packframe , now up in a big cupboard. Along the way i've given away my Force10 tent but hear it's still used. My 1970s sleeping bag (4 season made in NZ) is still living in a bivvy bag.
All the best.
Time to get back out there I think, thanks Pat
Hi Pete, some old gear there, 50/60s, weighed a to but that's what was available then, all the best Pat
Very enjoyable, good simple times with mates, priceless.
Yes the best times, not a lot of money then, but fantastic memories, all the best Pat l
Yes I, am glad it brought back memories, it did for me, such amazing times, mind you we were young and everything was new, all the best Pat
Yes so true Dave, all the best Pat
My goodness,Saunders Jetpacker,Karrimor Jaguar & the old trusty Trangia, what great memories, the gear might be better technically but your enthusiasm is ageless,Atb Colin P.
Thanks Colin yes a blast of familiar names from the past, great times, all the best Pat
Patrick - thank you. This brings back a flood of 1970's scouting memories getting touched up
Yes metbesame while editing the vidio, great memories, thanks Pat
Absolutely love your videos Patrick, thank you for sharing your adventures with us. Blessings to you and keep them coming bruv😎👍
Thanks appreciate your comments thanks Pat
brilliant patrick, throughly enjoyed that reminisce,,,,, the do say old is gold, certainly proved it this time
Thanks appreciate that, Pat
Yes Saunders great tents, modern gear is lighter but the old gear is just as good, been in Black's today, good there still going, thanks Pat
Watched this when it was first posted & keep coming back to it.Brilliant wee trip down memory lane.(luv the old Ford Orion) Great thing about Pats vids is they stand up to multiple viewings👍
Thanks Marty, I look at it again just to see my Capri, it's good to look back to the good old days and the kit we used, and still have, thanks Pat
I've watched this vid a few times, since it first came out. It's absolutely brilliant. Pat, you're a star.
Yes, I loved making it, brought back so many memories, especially the cars I owned, all the best Pat

Absolutely love your passion for the Great Outdoors!
Luckly I was working as a Engineer, no responsibilities no wife and kids, could spend my money how I liked, thanks Pat
Your content just gets better and better, what a great idea pat, most ENJOYABLE.MORE, MORE,MORE.Thanks for sharing!!!!
Your very welcome on my journey back in time, all the best Pat
I started camping in a Woolies A framed tent ⛺️ in the back garden. It was white. All the 6 weeks holidays. Then bought stuff in the post from Cornwall (maybe Taunton leisure) or somewhere. Then started buying stuff at CCC in Sheffield.
Thanks for the reminiscing 👍🏻
Loved it.
🙏🏻
Thanks Michael, they were great times, can, t belive it was over 40 years ago, part of life I suppose, great memories, all the best Pat
Patrick
You had long hair and I was a skinhead lol 😂 still am now 🥴
Hi Richard you were very welcome on my journey back in time, such great memories generated by a few photographs, thanks Pat
Great twist on camping. I've still got an Argos bought sleeping bag thats kept me warm on Hellvellyn, two A frame tents, Trangia set and assorted stuff from the 80's from my TA days. All still OK and rock solid.
Now I live in France and I'm using much of it again.
Great that your still using the old gear, proves it was good gear, all the best Pat
Very very enjoyable video, a real pleasure to watch , fascinating stories and nice photos, thanks Patrick
Glad you enjoyed it, I certainly enjoyed making it, brought back many memeories, all the best Pat
Thank you again Donsld I absouldly loved your vid it brought back fantastic wonderful nempries Wonderful.
Your very welcome Len, all the best Pat
Five years back, I finally retired a tent (Holubar 2-person winter expedition mountaineering tent with inner, outer and built in floor) I bought in 1967, due to the tent getting severely damaged by mildew in a leaky outside storage facility. Had it not been mildewed, I'd be using it today. We can still get methyl (wood) alcohol lots of places, used in wallpaper burners. I have a Hilleberg Soulo also, and a Luxe Megahorn tipi with a stove--ah, luxury.
Yes Gary I love the Soulo, so easy to set uo, your old tent sounded a good one, pity about the mildew, thanks Pat
Brilliant as usual great to see thanks. Old gear still works. If you look after it. 👍😄
Yeah some of the old stuff was made to last, a bit heavy, but last a lifetime..... thanks Pat
Smashing video Pat, brings back some good memories. I was 25 in 1970! eeek. Am watching it from beside a beach in South of France, it's been chucking it down all day😀. Luckily am in a campervan these days. Thanks again for the time and effort you put in to make us smile. Tony
Your I one of my favourite places, hopefully should be sunny soon, just making this vidio has brought back many memories for me, all the best Pat
Another of your videos I thoroughly enjoyed Patrick. I didn't laugh once, but I'm still smiling as I write :) Different memories, same era. Shine on Patrick. Douglas.
Thanks Douglas, for me great times and great memories, all the best Pat
Sounds like you had a great time, great memories I bet as well, thanks Pat
Absolutely brilliant video. Even cars orion Ghia ford Capri .great look back in time .very entertaining.
Thanks Dave, yes great cars, great times, glad I got them on film, all the best Pat
Glad your all sorted, part of life it would appear as we get older, onward and upwards, all the best Pat
glad to see your back at it, that rain reminds me of my mum's chip pan, if something would have happened to that pan we would have starved, chips every night except sunday, we had a change, mashed spud's, and my first tent was a force ten, and a swedish rucksack, still got the frame mark's on me back, Thanks patrick, look after yourself.
Haha, still got the marks, sounds a nice family upbringing, all the best Pat
Fantastic nostalgic time pat loved the video and your great talk thankyou for sharing this, atvb buddy.
Your very welcome, glad you enjoyed it thanks Pat
I remember camping in a similar tent with my Dad many years ago. Then we bought a Conway and camped as a family, 5 of us together. I used to help him put it up while my Mum, brother and sister waited in the car. Fun times. My Dad always said things were built to last in those days! Loved this video Pat. Only discovered your work at the start of the year but your one of the best on RUclips. Good to see someone not trying to sell you something or ask for likes. Just someone showing us a passion and hobby and you do a great job at it. Glad your feeling a lot better and look forward to the next video
Thanks Daniel really nice of you to say, all the best Pat
Thanks Pat for sharing these memories with us, so glad to see that you look well and are optimistic after your recent health problems. I now realise that we are the same age, but unfortunately due to physical health problems I am unable to get out into the wild, so I live my life vicariously through your videos. Thank you so much, Paul.
Hi Paul and thank you, I, am feeling fine now and looking forward to getting back out wildcamping, all the best Pat
Magic.
Yes it's great to look back, I think that's why I enjoyed making this video so much, the photographs brought so many memories of happy care free days, where did it all go...... thanks Pat

Hi there .. from a South African now living in Switzerland 😊.
Yes Jamie brought back many memories when I filmed it, gear has certainly changed and got a lot lighter, will have to see how it lasts, thanks Pat
Being born in 1975 in the north of England, this is a flashback to a time when I used to wander around the Peak District with my old man.
Also still have a canvas backpack and tent that we used to use.
Hi Miles yes this video certainly takes you back in time, to some great adventurous times as well, glad it brought back memories, thanks Pat
