My crackpot theory is that the PG-only thing is just a ploy to get him on the spurs specifically (given the other talk about his willingness to do whatever to win with UConn)
If he's going to the Spurs, they're definitely making him a PG. The Spurs still want Wemby to play a lot of on-ball possessions, so they need a PG that can play both on and off-ball, provide POA defense, and has good playmaking. For that, Castle is perfect, he wouldn't need to create too much by himself, and would play to his strengths (off-ball mixed with on-ball, playmaking, POA def)
If anyone can develop this guy into a point guard with a workable pull-up game, it’s the Spurs. There’s 3 other PG’s in this class I’d probably rather them take, but if they get Castle at 8 and he actually becomes what he COULD be, that would be such a great fit.
He was a top 10 prospect, and a top 2 PG prospect. He didn’t play off the ball because he didn’t have the skills, they just already had vets at the position.
He was a point guard in high school. The reason he didnt play point guard in UConn was, because Tristen Newton was a senior and starting point guard. Coach Dan Hurley asked Castle to sacrifice and play wing.
Enjoyed this! I still believe he can play a role conducive to playing with the ball in his hands. PG is such a blurry positional term nowadays. The fact that he has the connective wing traits and size but also flashed some of the point guard type P&R operation, winning with strength and craft that you used as an example is is intriguing for how he projects as an initiator long term.
I think Castle is much more interesting as an in motion playmaker. Picks the ball up off a screen and can sprint straight into a play and use his reaction playmaking to make shots. Very similar to what Ginobli did for years
I think you're thinking too much of a "traditional point guard," that plays the floor general and monopolizes possessions. Those don't really exist anymore in today's NBA except for the few mega-stars like Luka. A lot of the teams have multiple players that can bring the ball other than the PG now (Tatum, Banchero, Wemby, LeBron, Jokic, ...). So the PGs have a more mixed role with more off-ball stuff along a more dynamic offense. In that scheme, I think Castle would slot perfectly on a lot of teams with his versatility. I particularly love the idea of him as a PG on the Spurs who need a PG with good playmaking, can play both on&off-ball, and with excellent POA defense to play along Wemby (who will play a lot of possessions as a "point-center")
If Castle is an off ball PG who can't shoot then wouldn't he just make Wembys isos more difficult. If Castle is standing in the corner teams are gonna leave him open
Smart is 6'4 with terrible IQ an decision making. Castle definitely have a more composed demeanor. He literally said who he modeled his game after. Hes like a hybrid of jrue and kawhi.
Some of this ball handling as a legit 6-6 freshman has gotta be a positive indicator lol His ft% is ok Would it surprise you if he became a high usage on ball nba guy someday? He’s good
You mentioned his strength a couple times in the video (and in the conclusion), but I think it's fair to note specifically that this is where the comparison with Culver breaks down. Castle is 15-20 pounds heavier as a freshman than Culver was as a sophomore at Tech (and Culver was listed at that weight in the NBA). A lot of Culver's typical stuff didn't work in the NBA because he was just not physically able to do it and had no shooting, agility, or burst to fall back on. Castle is more physically prepared for the NBA. You can see in your Culver NBA clips he gets to a defender, tries to get leverage, realizes he's weaker and can't move him, and just like fades away or escape dribbles back. You do conclude that's one way Castle could end up gaining advantages, and I do think that's his path, alongside just improving his jumper enough to get those over coverages.
Yeah he can be a PG. I’m a long long time Spurs fan, so I was very intrigued with checking out who spurs potential draft pick could be. When I saw the willingness to work, willingness, to be coached , willingness to defend and then the rare ability ( and yes it us rare, strange but true ) to throw lob entry passes over fronting D I was desperately hoping to pick him up..He doesn’t have super unique physical attributes but I think he will become pretty unique player for the Spurs.
