    Hey Jordan, this VLOG was super helpful, especially when you were talking to the first guy. I've been trying to figure out the same thing. I'm 7wks into NLP and have gained 15lbs. I've read your article "To be a beast" and I'm guessing that article is geared for those already deep into their training and wanting to be competitive at lifting? Anyway this really helped shed some light on the other end of the spectrum. And of course goals are super important to figure out how much to gain. Thanks!

    What does it mean to "achieve" that 10 METs threshold? It seems METs would need a time component to be meaningful. For example, I may be able to sustain 8 METs riding a bike moderately for several hours or sustain 15 METS pushing myself hard for 1 hour or or 50 METS sprinting for 30 seconds. Should you be able to sustain 10 METs for 20 minutes to be in that lowest risk group?

  • @shagral_

    There’s one more aspect to rapid weight gain on LP that no one seems to mention. It inevitably leads to a huge low point in your training, physically and more important - mentally. Because when you DO get a bunch of weight in a small timeframe and DO get stronger, you will still find yourself in a point where LP no longer works. But now you’re fat. AND need to switch to more volume programming. You will have to lean out to tolerate those volumes. As a result you lose a bunch of strength and progress and remain bummed out about your training for MONTHS with what you used to do for x5x3 being your 1rm. Combine that with being confused about intermediate programming and you have yourself a recipe for quitting lifting altogether. I know I nearly did. Don’t go mad with weight gain, folks!

    • @BarbellMedicine
      @BarbellMedicine  6 лет назад +4

      Григорий Шаханов people don’t always get fat on LP or depressed for that matter. We should be careful when we generalize

    • @Delerisk
      @Delerisk 6 лет назад +1

      Why do you have to learn out in order to tolerate those volumes?

    • @shagral_
      @shagral_ 6 лет назад +1

      Delerisk because you gonna need to be pretty fit to complete those training sessions in reasonable amount of time.

      I've finally decided to lean out even though I might be able to progress my lifts a bit further on LP (except squat). I spent a year losing 75 lb just to gain it all back when I took up lifting. I'm tired of being fat and don't mind gaining strength a bit slower. I didn't consistently progress on LP anyway.

  • @yezerman69
    @yezerman69 6 лет назад +4

    Hey Jordan, I know BBM defines volume as sets x reps, but some define it as the # of hard sets. If this were the case, is 6 sets of 4 more stressful than 4 sets of 6? (assuming similar levels of effort) Also do you use a stress index when making programs? And when is each rep scheme appropriate to use in regards to an upcoming meet? Thanks

    • @filipposcarlata2923
      @filipposcarlata2923 6 лет назад +1

      yezerman69 6x4 would be more stressful since i assume the intensity would be at a higher level

    • @bart2334
      @bart2334 6 лет назад +1

      yezerman69 while we wait for a nuanced answer, I can tell you that 6 sets of 4 have to be more stressful, because you’re doing the same reps at a higher intensity

    • @yezerman69
      @yezerman69 6 лет назад

      Tomas Giamona it seems we're all in agreement that the decreased reps will allow for more relative intensity and more overall stress, still interested in Jordan's answer. Also curious if hypothetically you were to do the same weight which would more stressful since the sets of 6 would likely be harder than the sets of 4. But then again idk more sets could mean more training stress

    Wait a minute... you didn’t tell him that veganism is an eating disorder? You really have broken with Rippetoe.

    • @Fortress333
      @Fortress333 6 лет назад +7

      Rip would have definitely ripped into the guy, maybe even getting the straitjacket himself and calling the mental hospital ;)
      I personally always notice that vegans just have to somehow always proclaim they are vegans. You never see meat eaters say they do eat meat, except they may or may not comment on how delicious their latest steak was.
      It's like a religion to vegans. I mean, just like a religion. Religious people also have a (usually) strong tendency to show off to what strain of religion they belong. It's like virtue signalling. I fully expect vegans to showcase their veganism in the future by getting a special wristband or nose piercing or tattoo to show they are vegan. In the worst-case scenario, they will manage to use the government to heavily tax meat or ban it altogether, having people eat soy and mushrooms all day and night (because it just ain't fulfilling and keeps getting biled back up in your mouth, so you have to chew and swallow it again making faces).
      Sorry for the rant. I just notice these things. In leftist environments, you can see signs of vegan disorder everywhere, stickers on lamp posts saying there's no animal-friendly meat or all the soy shops where they have 'latte' coffees for 5-10 bucks. Note: Being a leftist is also a mental disorder.
      When the guy grows into his lifting, I fully expect a recovery for him.
      Anyone feeling triggered? That's also a sign you're affected.

    • @flabio7074
      @flabio7074 6 лет назад +2

      White Wolf putting aside the liberal this, mental disorder that (makes you sound really big man), I don’t actually disagree with your main point. Vegans, along with crossfiters and NRA enthusiasts, can’t seem to keep it to themselves. It’s annoying.
      However, and these are important howevers... a plant based diet has myriad health and physique benefits, and... most importantly... vegan chicks are disproportionately hot and DTF. I love a good steak on occasion, but I also like being a healthy dude surrounded by free spirited bombshells. Choosing burgers over that doesn’t make you alpha, it makes you a cuckold.
      And for what it’s worth my deadlift hasn’t suffered one bit.

    Hi Jordan you stated in some of your RUclips videos that if a male weighs less than 200 LBs they would be considered underweight. And stated that rip even feels that a man who doesn’t weigh 200 LBs shouldn’t be considered a man. Have you changed your stance on this? I’m confused on what on bodyweight would be considered underweight for an average 5ft 10 novice?

    • @BarbellMedicine
      @BarbellMedicine  6 лет назад

      jasbinder123 where did I state this?

    • @Nailey13
      @Nailey13 6 лет назад

      You had a discussion with Austin on one of your podcasts about various stages of "gain-o-penia" for a male approximately 5'10" in height.

    • @jasbinder123
      @jasbinder123 6 лет назад

      Yes it was that podcast with Austen Baraki about gains o”penia. When you said if you weigh 10% less than 200(180LBs) your class 1 and 20% less (160 LBs) you are class 2 underweight etc.

    • @BarbellMedicine
      @BarbellMedicine  6 лет назад

      Right, so that's not saying, "If a male weighs less than 200lbs they would be considered underweight." I don't know what a 5'10 guy who is not trained should weigh based on his height and gender alone.

    • @Nailey13
      @Nailey13 6 лет назад

      Ok, I gotcha. So admittedly we can't make any claims about a male of any height and one who is untrained. But do you still stand by the "gains-o-penia" categories you laid out in that podcast for a 5'10" trained male?

  • @destro1989
    @destro1989 6 лет назад

    Why do some elite level benchers have relatively weaker presses in comparison to their bench press? I believe someone like Brett Gibbs barely press 80kg or so for 10, when he has a 215kg bench @ 83kg. So does the press not really carry over to benching much at all?

    • @destro1989
      @destro1989 6 лет назад

      Do you find it's a good movement for hypertrophy? Like most my goal is strength and size, I wouldn't want to cheat myself out of good shoulder hypertrophy overall if I didn't press.

    • @bart2334
      @bart2334 6 лет назад

      Maxx's Chicken Tenderloins yeah it doesn’t, I don’t think it’s even controversial. Benchers use it for front delt hypertrophy, not for direct carryover. Strength is specific and the press is a high-skill lift, so if you don’t train it much it can easily be about 50% of your bench 1rm. EDIT: that was the answer to the original question. I would love to hear Jordan weigh in on the hypertrophy benefits of the press. Bodybuilders like dr Mike israetel don’t find it too useful as they would rather bench more and then do isolation exercises for side delts, but Jordan’s side delts don’t look too bad either and I believe pressing is all he ever did for them

    • @sumsar01
      @sumsar01 6 лет назад

      It is arguably better or just as good for hypertrophy as the bench press. It has a longer kinetic chain and range of motion. You can, however, move less weight. But total weight on the bar isn't to important for hyp anyway.

    • @BarbellMedicine
      @BarbellMedicine  6 лет назад

      They don't train their press. If they did, they'd be better at it. The carry over is better for novices, but falls off hard afterwards.

    • @mattdelvecchio1537
      @mattdelvecchio1537 6 лет назад

      snozzcumbers Rippetoe’s speciality is training novices on LP. read SS cover to cover and there’s not much to complain about, he’s good at it and the book is a great novice/trainer resource. intermediate training is a different game, and that’s really were BBM’s philosophy branches.

    • @snozzcumbers
      @snozzcumbers 6 лет назад +1

      Matt D. Practical Programming could have had a whole new addition including the training concepts BBM is using, instead Rip did what he did and now you have SSCs and even SSOCs using BBM methods which Rip rejects.
