Hi Brian I just discovered your channel whilst searching RUclips for Peter Drucker videos. I've just returned from a short vacation in Tokyo where I attended a brief meditation course led by a Buddhist teacher. One of my questions to him was how to practice mindful introspection within the context of everyday life, taking in personal and professional pressures and applying a productivity framework that balanced the self with the outside world. His recommendation was to look up Peter Drucker. Having looked at his books, I was concerned that they would be a bit outdated and wouldn't be relatable in this modern age. Your video has really helped to put things into context in a relevant way. I took a lot out of this video and wanted to thank you. I've subscribed to your channel and will definitely be checking out your other clips. Let me know if you're ever planning to be in London (UK) for work. I owe you a pint!
Very interesting comment. I am a HUGE fan of Drucker, but I had never really thought of him as Zen. Your Buddhist teacher hooked you up with a great suggestion! To you, Rax, and all seekers of wisdom, please DO NOT sleep on Drucker. It breaks my heart to see so many people "hacking" problems that Drucker solved 45 decades ago 😜
@@gaubacho thanks Courtney. I completely see your point about Drucker's work now being duplicated and passed off as new paradigms that solve modern productivity malaises. His principles stand true today and don't need a massive stretch of the imagination in order to be relatable to contemporary life in 2019. Any other authors that you would recommend looking up?
@@RaxLakhani Good question about authors. Do you have any specifics areas you are focused on? Drucker is, of course, known mostly in the business world. But, his story is much more wide ranging. Born in Austria, he fled after reading Mein Kampf, because he could tell Hitler meant business. He first went to London, where he worked in finance, and did very well, but he quit, because it did not match his value system. He says values must be our guide. And, he saw no point in being the richest man in the cemetery. Drucker valued people, and spent his life studying them. And, since most people work jobs, Drucker studied business, but that was secondary to his real interest. He even ended up working with a lot of non-profits and churches. I think Drucker's book "Managing the Non-Profit Organization" is one of the best leadership books in existence. You might also consider reading Drucker's autobiography, it is titled "Adventures of a Bystander." Side note: The only person that may have bested Drucker, with the title of their memoirs, would be his wife Doris. She called her autobiography "Invent Radium Or I'll Pull Your Hair" 😁 I love what Brian is doing with Philosopher's Notes. He did a particularly great job here with "The Effective Executive." One thing that caused me a fair amount of grief was identifying my strengths. To sort out your strengths Drucker recommends something called "Feedback Analysis." Additionally, I would recommend the test created by Martin Seligman and Chris Peterson. You can take it, for free, at Marty's site: www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/ (it is called the "VIA Survey of Character Strengths") Seligman, of course, initiated this whole Positive Psychology movement, alongside Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. One book I believe EVERYBODY should read is Csikszentmihalyi's "Flow." And, I will leave you with a fun little anecdote. Csikszentmihalyi is a professor at the same school Drucker was at. One time, while doing a study of creative people, Csikszentmihalyi asked Drucker how he was able to be so productive. And, Drucker responded, "By not participating in time-wasting surveys." Heyooooooo!! P.S. For anybody who has thrown it into neutral, and might be coasting in life, because you think you are too old, ponder this. Drucker wrote 39 books in his lifetime. And, two-thirds of those books were written AFTER turning 65 years of age!
@@gaubacho Oh wow! Just wow! That's incredibly helpful. The recommendations you've made look spot-on for what I'm looking to find out more about. Drucker's business management focus is what initially interested me, but I'm particularly looking for productivity tips that also apply outside of work. You seem to have given me the right links and I'll definitely be investigating further. Thank you so much! Goes to show that RUclips comments are places that good things happen too! Have a fabulous week. Rax
@@RaxLakhani I think great things can happen in the RUclips comments! Let me just mention one more thing... Brian has a great Philosopher's Note on "The Philosophy of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy." In the note, Brian talks about how CBT is deeply rooted in Stoic philosophy. Think of it, CBT is the state of the art in psychology, and much of CBT's wisdom was derived from the ancients. Though I embrace both, if I had to choose between timeless wisdom, and modern hacks, it would be an easy decision. I wish you only the best, in your journey, and hope to someday meet in a pub for a pint 😃
Brian, excellent work. Today, I decided to do some light brushing up on the effective executive for a book report / training meeting tomorrow. I was pleasantly surprised at the order, depth and understanding you presented on the book. I read this book 20 years ago due to the recommendation of my management professor during freshman year. I probably read it a hundred times since. I especially liked that you pointed out the source of the popular seven habits 1st things 1st being Drucker. One of my favorite business book trivia facts! Excellent presentation. You've gained a subscriber. I'm sure I'll find in subsequent videos my answer, however I'll ask here as well. First is there a dedicated list on a website etc of all of the books you've reviewed? Second how do I contact you to request a book that has not been reviewed to date?

I agree! This book (and video) are great. To understand the whiskey thing, you need to know that Lincoln had a great sense of humor. You might know that America can be a bit Puritanical. Meaning, a lot of people look down on those who drink too much alcohol. What Lincoln knew is leadership is about achieving the objective. And, you might say one key objective, for military generals, is to win battles (which requires a fight.) A string of generals had let Lincoln down (perhaps, most notably, McClellan, who was overly friendly with his soldiers, and was hesitant to send them into battle.) While most Americans would say excessive drinking is a problem, Lincoln knew he was not looking for a pastor to preach abstinence. He wanted generals who fight and win. And, he would rather have fighters who were drunk but successful, rather than generals who were sober but did not do their job. If whiskey is what it takes, to make a man fight, than whiskey it is!
