- Vote for sheriff because I’m taking a look at Jim Thompson’s vicious little crime novel, Pop. 1280.
A nihilistic crime story stewing in the Southern Gothic tradition, this novel follows the self-serving misadventures of a corrupt, small-town sheriff as he engineers the downfall of rivals and maintains his position all while commenting on the hidden and not so hidden vices of his colleagues and neighbors.

This was fascinating! I really appreciated how you compared and contrasted this book to other novels. While it's probably not something that I would pick up, I appreciated how you situated the literary context of this work for us. Great video!
Thank you, Smiti. This is one of those books that needs to have the right context to be effective.
Great review PN! I always enjoy your videos. And this actually sounds like a Crime/Mystery novel I might want to read!
Thank you, Grammaticus. If you can find a copy I recommend giving it a try.
Such an introspective examination, Seth. Thanks for sharing. Is this something you would recommend for a person looking for an entertaining read, or is it for someone looking for something more scholarly like Crime & Punishment or 1984? Happy reading.
Thank you for your kind words, Tim. I think first and foremost, this is a book that is entertaining for a particular audience that likes dark humor, crime fiction, and grotesque, Southern Gothic stories. The thematic elements about judgment on human behavior and wrestling with notions of emotional emptiness help give the novel additional depth and weight.
This sounds like fun.
I enjoyed it more than I was expecting.
