Painting Tutorial: Peaceful Beach (Oil Paint)

- Here is another painting tutorial for you! This time we are working with oil paints to make a really peaceful moonlit beach scene. Try your hand at painting along, OR just hang out, relax, and watch this painting come to life!
Seascapes are like a gateway drug to oils paints, so if you are a painter who has been thinking about getting into oils for a while but have tried working with oils and struggled, this might be a good step for you into some of those trickier oil properties like blending.
This is more of an intermediate level painting BUT If you are a beginner, don't shy away! You can modify this painting easily to be for a beginner, like reducing the number of colors you blend in the sky of or skipping some of the harder details. This still can be a beginner painting tutorial.

Sea scapes and sky or cloud paintings speak to me in such a deep level and they’re my favorite thing to paint. I bought a tube of magenta a while back since your fluffy pink cloud tutorial and idk why I didn’t have it sooner. It’s a game changer lol. Ultramarine and magenta have to be my absolute favorite colors. I can’t wait to give this painting a go. Especially the water texture part since that’s what I’ve been trying to get down so this is very helpful. Hope you and your family are staying warm!
K. Fox Ultra Marine and magenta Are my faves too!!! I should do a painting sometime with just those 2 colors and white! I hope this helps you put with some water texture!

Maybe you could get one of those grip and bend type holders that you can clip your phone/camera to and have it gripped on to your easel and have it pointing directly at your work. Recordingwise, I had that idea: Your angle right now looks really nice, you just need to find a way to remind yourself nit to get into the camera angle. I tought of maybe putting a long stick standinv on the floor somehow like a pole right outside of the frame but next to your head, that you lightly brush it when you start leaning towards the frame, you could also do that by hanging something from the ceiling like chimes you touch when you lean.

This is such a beautiful painting! But I was wondering how different it would turn out if I tried recreating it in acrylic. I know blending would be much tougher, but anything else?
You can absolutely do this in acrylics!! The blending will definitely trickier BUT not impossible! The blending technique I use with that big dry brush doesn’t work with oils but if you are quick about applying your acrylic paint you can blend those sky gradients while it’s still wet! Or you could just do lots of different layers to create that gradient. Do you think it would be helpful if a did a video sometime where I do the same painting, once with oils and once with acrylics?
@@EmilyMackeyArt Yes! That would be soo helpful to a lot of people who aren't very comfortable with oils (or can't afford them, like me) bc a painting like this is tooo good to pass up bc of oils!

I'm new to your channel and I just wanted to say watching your videos is making me less scared to finally try my oil paints that i've been staring at for a month haha I'm decent with acrylic paints but not perfect so its nice finding your channel.
I'm only halfway through the video but I just gotta stop here and say this: I FEEL YOU GIRL. I also love painting and drawing and everyone's telling me to start making videos but I'm just such a blob at working with electronics I don't know how! You're videos are great though, it's kinda more personal this way and to see you struggle with these things as well makes me feel less stupid xD
Lisa M RIGHT!?!? Cameras are difficult. It’s always a learning process and even then I feel like I keep making the same filming mistakes over and over! And then I can’t get a recording angle I love and my head is always getting in the way or the lighting is weird. It’s all so complicated!

Susan Lindblad Maybe I can live streaming the color mixing for this video on my Instagram sometime! I’m currently out of the studio for a couple weeks but I’ll make a note of it! In the meantime, try checking out my how to mix colors video! You can use the palette I put on screen to try and match them using the color theory method from that video! I would highly recommend learning that because, for me personally, learning what I talk about in that video drastically improved my paintings! Hope that helps!

I think you did a great job on this painting. I would love to see more seascapes, sunrises, sunsets, cloud techniques (like how to paint clouds over wet paint). Do you use mediums? Turps? Oil? If so, what kind and in what proportions?
