  • This video has been requested a lot and also won on my latest poll of what video to make! Mixing colors can be hard at first but slowly your eye will get more accustomed to seeing small differences in color. Don't get discouraged and take your time to let yourself make the colors you are looking for in your paintings!

    i would like to know what the best way of mixing the exact same color twice, i always have the problem of running out of paint and the biggest problem of re-making the color ):

    • @EmilyMackeyArt
      @EmilyMackeyArt  4 года назад +81

      I do the same thing! I never mix enough paint. What I do is, when I'm getting close to running out of a specific color, I stop and on the side try and replicate that color using the same method I use in this video. I can mix it right next to the color im trying to recreate and continue to reference back to that color to see if I'm getting close. If you do that, with some practice, youll be able to make that exact same color again!

    Thanks so much for this tutorial. I am a beginner so I have watched tons of painting tutorials and NONE of the other tutorials gave a lesson like yours on mixing colors. For example, I never knew that mixing colors opposite each other on a color wheel would tone down the brighter color. WOW! I never knew that! That's so essential to know when painting.
    I appreciate your time, your talent and your wacky sense of humor. Positive vibes and One love from Jamaica!

    I was trying to paint a picture of my orange tabby cat. And i couldnt get the orange right and then i remembered what you said about adding blue and it would mute it and not be so bright. And it helped tremendously. Youre honestly amazing and i thank you so much for putting your self out there online to help other artists. Love you bunches!

      You guys are so sweet! I've actually got a video coming out next week about a really easy way to paint a cloud! It's one of the many different methods I use to paint clouds. And I promise you many many "how to paint clouds" videos will continue to come out because they are my favorite thing to paint! Don't get discouraged if its been a few weeks and you still can't paint clouds like you want to. It takes YEARS for most artists to get to a place they are comfortable with in art, and even then they are still learning and always wanting to be better. Don't give up. Painting is a pursued skill way more than it is a talent. the people who stick with their art through thick and thin and don't give up are the ones who will find so much joy in their future creations.

Why Indian Yellow instead of Cadmium Yellow, for example? How did you know you needed yellow at all? Does that just come with practice?

    Hello! I have some basic basic questions :)
    To start, I love your videos! This one in particular was incredibly helpful. I am a new newbie baby to paining, I took Art 1 and Art 2 in high school, but that was in 2013-2014 and we were given an A no matter how well or how poorly we painted. We didn't learn any techniques, mostly just self exploration and some art history. Well, except for shadow mapping on a reference picture, and drawing lines to help with scaling?? But anyway,
    I wanted to know, when should you wet your paint brush? What does the order go? Dry brush> paint> water? Dry brush> water> paint? When do I/ should I wipe the brush on a paper towel? Should the paper towel be wet?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi Emily! I have a couple of questions... how do you make it so your acrylics doesn't dry out in the mean time while you are mixing the other colors? Also, if you run out of one color, is it hard to replicate the exact same? Do I have to make lot's of it at once so I don't run out of it in the middle of my painting? I hope you can answer, thank you so much! I love your videos thanks for ll the great tips! :)

    • @EmilyMackeyArt
      @EmilyMackeyArt  4 года назад +5

      So in this video I am using oil paints, which take a a fe days to dry. When I use acrylics they dry much faster obviously. So when I'm using acrylics and painting from a reference photo, I usually just mix up the color I currently need and do that as i go along and need different colors, instead of mixing them all upfront like I do with oils. A humidifier or Getting a little spray bottle full of water and lightly spraying your acrylics could help them stay wet longer though! There are also some mediums I know of (But am unfamiliar with) that can slow dry time of acrylics that you might want to look into.

I knew the colour wheel, the primaries (plus the way pigments are made, there are cool and warm versions of each), I knew the secondaries and the tertiaries, the complementary colours and the way opposites become grey (or mud) - but I didn't appreciate that complementaries can be used to mute a colour!!! Bizarre, but I don't recall any book or magazine article that made that point clear. Oh for the last 40 years back again!!!!
