A little tip I do on refill, I use a solo cup instead of duct tape. It keeps the sand out & helps to spread the sand out evenly.

Thank you for uploading this video. Last year It took a lot of clarifier and 2 weeks of 24 hour filtering to get clear water. I also had many algae blooms despite keeping chlorine levels pretty high. I finally realized that after 5 years, its time to change the sand. The job seemed intimidating until I saw your video. You make it look so easy! Cheers from Montreal.

Thank you very much sir! I've had mine for 2 years and it's time to change the sand, this was a great refresher on how to do it. Started getting consistent debris on the bottom of the pool so that was my indicator of time to change the sand.

Great video here! I never changed my sand after owning my pool for 6 years. This year the filter system wasn't working as well as it normally does so I decided to change out the sand today. I watched your video and then changed my sand today. Took me a total of about 40 minutes to complete. My filter requires 175 lbs of sand. The only things I did differently was I used a styrofoam cup instead of duct tape on the pvc pipe and I also filled my filter halfway with water before adding the new sand. I found those instructions on my filter. It worked great!!! THANKS!

I'm pretty certain I could do all of this myself, but my Hayward is a 244T (takes 300lbs of sand, or about a 1/3 less if using glass media), and all of the three ports are put in with PVC (i.e., not flexible pipe), so I'd have to cut and then do re-plumbing, which I'm not as confident at. I did replace the multi-port at the top last year, and that came out great. Still, I may try this. Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to post this, very helpful. Would have been even better if you had showed the o-ring seal. When you disassemble the filter, inspect and clean the o-ring and the mating face of the filter can. Probably best to replace the o-ring when you replace the sand. Every pool season start-up, my o-ring always leaks bit.

Usually at the end of the year I'll just loosen the cap and let the water drain out of the filter. The sand should be changed at the beginning of the season before you put water in it.

Ours is open for about the same amount of time. You may want to change it every other year.

I am going to attempt this but already opened the pool. Can I still change the sand and do you have any suggestions on how to do this with wet sand?

You would have to drain the water out of the filter once the flow of water has been stopped going to the filter. Then you might have to scoop the wet sand out with something. Hope this helps you out.

I have a question - I had taken the top off my sand filter last week (pool has been OPEN for a month, opened by our pool guy), and there was no water inside, just sand. I was told this was an issue. That there should be water inside while running, otherwise the filter is broken. Any tips on this??

yes, there should be water in there. You may have valves that are not opened. Or the pump isn't working. Or if the valves were closed while the pump was on you may have damaged it

2 years of this nightmare.. had a DE filter .. was always great.. had a common leak and was talked into the sand filter at the pool store.. ever since leaking sand .. not sure if it's the lateral or stand pipe . Getting stressed over this.

How to do it during season? We just moved to a house with a pool. Started up the pool because everything was still connected. After two weeks of tackling the algae with hardly any result I asked the owner when the last time was they changed the sand. Apparently hasn't been changed since forever. So now I feel like maybe the algae is dead, since my shock levels don't go down that much, but the filter isn't taking care of it because the sand might be too old? What is your take on this? Thanks in advance!

If the algae is dead and has turned white, you might have to flock the pool to sink the algae to the bottom so you can vacuum it out

After putting in the new sand do you fill the filter with water?

I let the water from the pool travel through the pool hose and filled the filter that way before starting it.
