A little tip I do on refill, I use a solo cup instead of duct tape. It keeps the sand out & helps to spread the sand out evenly.
Thanks for the added tip!
Seven years later, this was super helpful. Thank you!!!
Thank you for uploading this video. Last year It took a lot of clarifier and 2 weeks of 24 hour filtering to get clear water. I also had many algae blooms despite keeping chlorine levels pretty high. I finally realized that after 5 years, its time to change the sand. The job seemed intimidating until I saw your video. You make it look so easy! Cheers from Montreal.
Thanks for watching
Thank you very much sir! I've had mine for 2 years and it's time to change the sand, this was a great refresher on how to do it. Started getting consistent debris on the bottom of the pool so that was my indicator of time to change the sand.
You are very welcome
I just started using a sand filter, and I want to say thank you, thank you, and thanks. Your video was straight forward and took all of the mystery out of it. I thanks for the information on how much sand you need. Thanks again Robert
Thanks for watching Robert, glad this has helped you out!
Embarrassed to say that I've never changed the sand after 13 years. I watched your tutorial and did it myself! That filter is heavy and after 13 years the sand was pretty gross. I don't recommend going that long! Thanks for. the video, it was so helpful!
I bet you will see a big difference in your pool water clarity. Thanks for watching.
Im working on a friends pool now and I am dreading this..lol I don't think the sand has been changed in a while..
@@HomeOwnerRepairso doing it now mid season..what is the down time ?
This video is spot on. Thank you so much. It took me less then 1/2 an hour to change my filter after I watched this video. Everything was exactly as shown. I have the pool up and running with I hope (knock on wood ) no problems. Again thank you

Never done this before, video made it clear it was much easier than I thought. Huge help, just changed out 100 lbs (half of which was wet, so that was brutal).
Thanks for watching. We love helping people out!
Thank you! I rent a home with an in ground pool. I’m on my third year and know I need to change the sand. This gives me a much clearer look at the filter, with that, better understanding. Very helpful
Thanks for watching. Glad this helped you out.
Great video here! I never changed my sand after owning my pool for 6 years. This year the filter system wasn't working as well as it normally does so I decided to change out the sand today. I watched your video and then changed my sand today. Took me a total of about 40 minutes to complete. My filter requires 175 lbs of sand. The only things I did differently was I used a styrofoam cup instead of duct tape on the pvc pipe and I also filled my filter halfway with water before adding the new sand. I found those instructions on my filter. It worked great!!! THANKS!
Glad this pool video helped you out.
First time pool owner and this video helped so much. Concise, easy to follow - perfect!

I'm pretty certain I could do all of this myself, but my Hayward is a 244T (takes 300lbs of sand, or about a 1/3 less if using glass media), and all of the three ports are put in with PVC (i.e., not flexible pipe), so I'd have to cut and then do re-plumbing, which I'm not as confident at. I did replace the multi-port at the top last year, and that came out great. Still, I may try this. Thanks!
Thanks for watching
Thank you, I have the exact same filter
Cool 👍
Thanks, goodluck!
Thanks for watching
If you do this in the middle of pool season, dont forget to drain all the water out first. And last step after sand is changed is to backwash/rinse the filter.
Thanks for watching
The last time I swept the pool, all the junk blew right back in when I was finished. So frustrated. Started reading and knew this is what had to be done. Hate to take it all apart mid-season, but I'm not sweeping again for no reason! Thanks for a great video!
How long do you backwash new sand for?
How do you drain all the water out?
Thanks for taking the time to post this, very helpful. Would have been even better if you had showed the o-ring seal. When you disassemble the filter, inspect and clean the o-ring and the mating face of the filter can. Probably best to replace the o-ring when you replace the sand. Every pool season start-up, my o-ring always leaks bit.
Thanks for the tip
My filter is a bestway sand filter and I'm hoping the spider works per your video. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much man, now I can change the sand in my pool, can you please show me how I can vacuum the pool is the same pool system if you can make a video.
Hi Jamie, Here is a video that will show you how to vacuum an above ground pool. Hope this helps you out. ruclips.net/video/YEW-QUyP2Iw/видео.html
Tha now for video I needed to know how much sand and it was perfect same filter
Glad this helped you out
Great video ty. I just had do same procedure, I worried thou I did just about wht u did, but Whn I put lateral back in I didn’t spread open the arms Whn putting back in filter, I added sand 1st then I put lateral back in filter, had trouble gtn lateral in thru sand , Will this cause problems? Wht do u suggest plz help much appreciated. Ty again for a well done video 👍👍
Thanks for watching
Does this mean after putting sand back in, you don’t need to fill it half way with water. I’ve seen it when someone filled it half way after putting sand in there. I see you did add water after . Will water eventually go in there once all installed when running ?
thanks sir

Let’s go bucs!!
This was helpful..just bought a home & not sure how old the filter is. Debating if I should just change up the sand now or next season...where’s your accent from?
I would change it. It's pretty easy to do, doesn't cost that much and will help keep the water clear. It makes a difference.
Thanks you didn’t over complicate it.

I have the same filter, but it came with the house that i just bought,, how do i relieve the pressure in the filter before taking all the hoses and top off? Do I push down the multiport handle to relieve the pressure in the filter?
Yeah, If you press down on that multi-port filter handle it should relieve the pressure for you. Hope this helps you out.
Very informative. Do you remove the drain plug & valve cover at seasons end to help? Your sand looked very dry.
I drain the water at the end of the season
Thanks bout to go change mine but I think I'm going to use my shop vac. That thing is heavy and I alone.
Hope the video helps you out.
Thanks..i'll wait till its dry
It is pretty easy to do. It makes a big difference in water clarity
Hi. Great video very helpful! Question tho. The white center drain pipe in my intex filter is actually stuck in the valve. Any ideas or suggestions on how to get it separated. We are “stuck” here and can’t finish the job. Thank u so much.
You want to be careful not to break it. Mine just lifted off.
I am having the same issue. I came here to see if anyone had a remedy... I'm stuck too and my wife is mad at me for not knowing how to fix it.
WD-40 then clean it off.
Thank you! After adding the sand, I saw some people added some water as well, is it necessary?
I filled the filter up with water before turning on
You should put some in at first to support those fingers and help disburse the sand. Might be hard on those plastic parts otherwise
I noticed you have the same drain plug and cap as I do. Have you had to ever take those off to drain the water out? I changed my sand after I opened my pool. Now I know better. But I had a hard time getting the cap and white plug out. I ended up having to replace the plug because I used pliers and it broke. Any tips?
Usually at the end of the year I'll just loosen the cap and let the water drain out of the filter. The sand should be changed at the beginning of the season before you put water in it.
After rinsing and putting new sand back in. Do you run a backwash and rinse cycle? Or just hook back up and start filtering the pool water?
Backwash and rinse till water is clear in that plastic glass
Thanks for helping out
How often do you change your sand? My pool is open from Memorial Day to around Labor Day every year.
Ours is open for about the same amount of time. You may want to change it every other year.
HomeownerRepair
Thx
I am going to attempt this but already opened the pool. Can I still change the sand and do you have any suggestions on how to do this with wet sand?
You would have to drain the water out of the filter once the flow of water has been stopped going to the filter. Then you might have to scoop the wet sand out with something. Hope this helps you out.
I have a question - I had taken the top off my sand filter last week (pool has been OPEN for a month, opened by our pool guy), and there was no water inside, just sand. I was told this was an issue. That there should be water inside while running, otherwise the filter is broken. Any tips on this??
yes, there should be water in there. You may have valves that are not opened. Or the pump isn't working. Or if the valves were closed while the pump was on you may have damaged it
Thanks for watching
2 years of this nightmare.. had a DE filter .. was always great.. had a common leak and was talked into the sand filter at the pool store.. ever since leaking sand .. not sure if it's the lateral or stand pipe . Getting stressed over this.
Hope the video helps out
How to do it during season? We just moved to a house with a pool. Started up the pool because everything was still connected. After two weeks of tackling the algae with hardly any result I asked the owner when the last time was they changed the sand. Apparently hasn't been changed since forever. So now I feel like maybe the algae is dead, since my shock levels don't go down that much, but the filter isn't taking care of it because the sand might be too old? What is your take on this? Thanks in advance!
If the algae is dead and has turned white, you might have to flock the pool to sink the algae to the bottom so you can vacuum it out
Here's a video that will show you how to flock the pool ruclips.net/video/zKb9SUy2HBc/видео.html
After putting in the new sand do you fill the filter with water?
I let the water from the pool travel through the pool hose and filled the filter that way before starting it.
