  • Ultimately, you just gotta "feel" it. But "feeling" it actually requires practice. Weird, right? These exercises have been some of the most useful for helping me develop a much stronger internal sense of time. If you put in the work, you'll be able to float over the time like a butterfly, but sting like a giant tarantula hawk.

    My problem is I don’t count and feel to much 😂😂but this is honestly such a great lesson like all of your others 🔥🔥🔥🔥

      Nah facts, same here. Though tbh, the quick (though not easy) fix is simply counting out loud while you practice.

    Josh thank you for the mind workout today . If you can take the time to start to feel any grouping against any pulse and work on changing the rythem pulse we start to enter in to Virgil donati Territory. Enjoy the ride .

    Yup I'm the other way, counting is often the difficult adjustment...odd time parts I'll typically start off counting but eventually the beats take an almost unspoken shape in my mind and these form sequences. Great lesson!

    Great lesson. If you dont mind, i should add that head banging in half notes also contribute into this while playing odd time beats in a 4/4 context. The head is like foot hi hat when every limb is occupied.

    What do we do if our fellow band member or singer disrupts the feeling of the time by doing a mistake?

    While I can do the cycles fairly well, I find it tough to resolve back to 1 without counting. For eg 3-note grp: I will count3 bars before back to 1. How to develop the awareness leading to 1 without counting ?
    Also, do you focus hearing accents in relation to the pulse?

    • @JoshMerhar
      @JoshMerhar  2 года назад +1

      Counting is extremely important and necessary while working on these exercises, but eventually, you'll want to just "feel" where things come back around. That awareness should naturally develop over a long period of time (like, after several weeks or months of working on this stuff).
      Focusing on hearing the accents in relation to the pulse is super helpful. That's one of the ways you'll be able to get away from counting constantly. You'll begin to feel how the accent seemingly shifts relative to each beat.
