I'm a beginner drumming and recognized very early on how something so simple as watching TV or listening to someone speak while practicing on the pad caused me to lose where I was (watching an exciting sports play happening does the same thing). It was the same whenever I would speak so I purposely watch TV and "sing" my ABCs while during rudiments as weird as that sounds. Although I do it in my head, counting aloud was something I've never thought about. I tried it while on the kit last night and it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, so thank you for pointing this out.
Great stuff. I'm a beginner drummer and a couple days ago I really started focusing on my counting and where I was at in the drum beat. Suddenly things started to click and I was enjoying it
you are absolutely right!when I was younger and knew everything then I wish I would have been more studious with playing by count ...it has been however one of the best re-learning experiences I've ever had because I'm older and more patient than then,I appreciate all your videos, you can see the passion you have when teaching and I've benefited greatly from your lessons !!👍
You probably already know this, but you're an amazing teacher Mike! I learnt the basics of drumming a few years ago, and your videos are really helping me get back in the groove
I hate to say it but I’m one of those “feel it” drummers and I’m always having to take extra time to learn something new but I have to remember we’re always students anyways I’m grateful for this video thank you
Cheers. Key message of this channel: Learning counting and theory are a great idea, and are not the opposite to "feeling it" - they compliment feeling it. Thanks for watching!
Great job! I must ask, can you do this same lesson but take a song any song and show how to count it out . so you can then apply what you said in this video. I have tried to do this. I can not fugue out how to do this . we all know we're one, and 2 are, but to count out a song 1e&a2e&a ect and apply it to a song, please do this type of lesson. Thank you
Hi David, there are many, many videos on this channel that do that. Check out any of my playlists for drum grades, where as well as posting demos of the pieces, I have also recorded lots of full lesson talk-throughs of the songs. These provide the counts for the grooves and for all the key moments in the tunes. For example the Grade 1 Rock and Pop playlist, here: ruclips.net/p/PLcfoni8UPb9ohPuR7KRo__OIb6ZnrV94b I also give the counts as I go along on all other vids I post, such as drum fill videos: ruclips.net/p/PLcfoni8UPb9qtPPDWOKA5csgos-JYGhAD And over on the channel member's page there are also many full lesson talk-through of popular tunes whee counts are given in the talk-through too. When you say "I have tried to do this and I can not figure it out", have you studied a drum grade-style course ) or any drum course) from the beginning? If not I'd really recommend doing so as a structured, level-by-level way of building up your skills. And thank you for watching!
Hi! Thank you for your clear explanations and examples. I started learning the drums by myself at 15, have only played occasionally, I am an amateur drummer with maybe a couple of gigs a year :-). After having played "by ear" for many years, I reckon that not having used a metronome and not counting properly has made it all more difficult than it should. Thanks again, great teacher and drummer!
I think the best example of needing to count is....... Too Much Time on My Hands by: Styx....... because of the offbeat flams in it. I finally got it AFTER I counted where they needed to be. See what you think and thanks.
It's so hard to speak and play for me also. I've only been learning for 7 months now and I still can't speak and play haha.. I want to ultimately try sing and play but I'm a long way off. Thanks for the video man
Mike I love your lessons. Could you tell me what type of set you are using. It looks like a hybrid. It looks like you are using e cymbals, but I don't see any wires.

As a beginner, I find I am playing a lot of straight 8 grooves, and I can count these with no real problem. However, I now find it difficult to count quarter notes in a straight 8 groove. Do you have any thoughts?
@Mike Barnes Drums Yeah sorry not explained properly. I do know it's 1234 but I find it hard to detach myself from counting 1&2& etc. I think I just need to keep practicing going from one count system to the other as I play.
i m a guitar player learning drums right now. how do i count and try to play at the same time? well i guess i never worry before cause i had a drummer.
@MikeBarnesDrums yeat It seems the most Logic thing to do lol but i dont have time, energies or Money at the moment. Maybe One day, for the Moment Im gonna stick to try and count up time messed up time signatures without any clue

I’ve never counted on a kit. Ever. To me the most confusing thing is the count is totally relative to the tempo. You can say, “1 and 2 and 3 and…” at infinitely variable paces. So what good is it? If your count doesn’t match the melody congratulations you’re the worst drummer in the world. It might help to explain what is being counted. Measures? Beats? What?
“And” is also one syllable! The classic/most common way to write it is “1e+a, 2e+a” etc and to pronounce it “one e and a” etc. You can of course change it to whatever suits you if you want. Thanks for watching!

Probably the first lesson I should of watched..down beat, upbeat, back beat now❤
My biggest complaint about drumming videos is when they DON’T include the count
I am guilty as charged my biggest challenge has always been went to come in to do fils, now I know on the first lesson 😅🙏

All I want to say is thank you Mike.
Thank you for this video, it's GREAT! I've been struggling with understanding how counting works but this is really helpful.
I struggled so much with counting and my teacher didn’t insist, but now I am more capable. It felt so good when I reached that level
Super useful skill.

Learning drums now! Thank you for this
Terrific advice Mike, thanks. Counting equals flow, so there’s a benefit right there ‼️🥁✌️
👍😊 🥁 thanks Mike. Bob
Thanks for that Mike. Really enjoyed it and will definitely be taking it onboard 👍
This is great! Thank you!

Entertaining and informative! Mike always encourages a growth mindset!
Growth mindset all the way, all day! That's the one, thank you for watching.

Cool, give it a go from the beginning man, yes I think it makes learning easier and more fun.

If my drummer watches the first minute of this video, our band rehearsal would go just so much smoother. 🤦🏻
Ha, I appreciate it!
I love your Ricky Gervais voice. If you don’t count, how do you keep time. Your a master, I will go with your advice.
Hi Mike, I know this is an unusual request but is there any chance you might show how to play Frank Turners " the way I tend to be" please?
It's so hard to speak and play for me also. I've only been learning for 7 months now and I still can't speak and play haha.. I want to ultimately try sing and play but I'm a long way off. Thanks for the video man
Go slow, start at the beginning, be thorough - it'll same you time in the end! Thanks for watching.

Quarter notes in a straight 8s groove? "1,2,3,4"

🙄Your poor drummer! 😂
Thanks for watching.
I know basically nothing about drums and i want to get to being able to count to Pneuma right. Am i cooked?
Thanks for watching. My advice - Learn drums (and music), then learn Pneuma! Cheers

u must give example for one or two song and teach how count....but u talk in video general and talk too much...
I replace the and with the N letter sound as it is one syllable. 1ena2ena3ena4ena is the right?
