  • It sounds pretty dopey, but this exercise will definitely test your abilities to play your limbs together and separately. The mind will be willing, but the body may resist.

There's one that Vinnie does a lot (for example, in the solo before "Ya gotta try" in that Buddy Rich memorial concert) and was explained by Greg Bissonette, that basically goes as right hand - left foot - left hand - right foot. I've been practicing that for years and haven't reached even half the speed Greg or Vinnie play that, but definitely has helped me in my own coordination and balance.

In general, are you always thinking generating bass drum strokes from the hip?

It depends mostly on the speed. The faster I go, the less I use my full leg and the more I use just my ankle (but not heel down).

Hey Josh, what position of overheads do you recommend to get a good sound from the kit if you only have 4 mics?

Read up on the Glyn Johns method! Essentially, you'll have a kick mic, snare mic, and 2 overheads. One overhead will be mounted directly above the snare drum (pointing straight down) and the other will be over the floor tom, but pointing toward the hihats. Make sure the center of each overhead mic is equidistant from the center of the snare.
At the advice of an audio engineer buddy of mine, I recently changed my overhead setup to more of an XY configuration to have them behave more like room mics instead of cymbal mics. It'll take some experimenting, but I'd start with the Glyn Johns method and then look up some other tutorials from there to dial in everything.
