I really love how you don’t just give tools in your lessons. The way you unpack everything, give context and applications for these building blocks really links them to what it is about (opportunity) and what it should be at the service of (musicality). I think this type of content is the very best RUclips taught drummers can expect around here.
'Practice slower than you think you need to, for longer than you think is necessary' - such good advice, so simply expressed. Thanks for the great lesson :-)
While still working on getting your hands together - and as you’re able to ramp up the tempo - I find it helps to the think of the 3 stroke ruffs as playing simple doubles (RR LL) with a note in between each stroke played by the opposite hand. Great class, Josh!
Damn you! Just when I think I'm going to have one of those relaxing, sort of due nothing weekends, I stumble across your video on a Friday night. Now I'm thinking of calling in to work on Monday (and its only Saturday yet) so I have more time with this one to get it up to speed. Thanks! Really though, Thank you!
10:04 - This is where it sounds best to me (and man what a groove, that was stellar). Anything above that starts sounding stuttery (just a speed thing, not your flawless execution), especially at the end where these 32nd triplets are just beyond real :D
Gary Chaffee fan I see! I spent a couple of days with him when I was up in Boston. Great teacher and very patient considering he had noob me as a student :D
Its a PARADIDDLE replacing the dle (R-par L- a R-did K-dle) with the Kick. Its a great linear groove also. I saw this on Bill Ray Drums a few years back. He is the drummer for Paul Gilbert. Check him out.
Very cool you can phrase in any grouping from 3 to 20 or beyond it will all create a very different polymeric feel this helps us hear new sounds and rythems that we are not use to hearing and will push us to create a new feel and help us push the boundaries beyond simple rythems . Great job ty
Lately, I've been revisiting some things from Syncopation and Polyrhythmic Possibilities by Henrique de Almeida (the book he used in his polyrhythms class as Berklee - that thing kicked my butt!).
Tells us to play it slow and clean, demonstrates it fast and sloppy. 🤨 Why not play it at the speed you can play it clean instead of hacking through it and showing how to play it badly? You’re doing exactly what you tell people not to do, the WORST way to teach.

Thanks! Great stuff. That video on RLLK/KRLL was a game-changer for me and I still incorporate it all the time.

Brilliant tutorial. Love the simplicity with which you explain. Will practice these beats today in my practice session.
Crikey Moses, love your ideas! Blew my mind.
Kickass lesson thanks and nice job!!
Wow. Excellent. Great job as teacher. I'm in!!
I still can't tell if I'm just biased or if Josh is actually the single best drum instructor I've found on RUclips.

Будь счастлив))))
Благодарю за твои труды))))
I have always had issues with RLRK orchestrated at 160bpm+. I should have thought about it like a ruff!
Great lesson thx.✌️🥁

I really like playing this pattern descending down my toms, never tried it as 32nds though!

Be interested to hear what books you’re currently working through. Spotted ‘Sticking Patterns’, I’m working through ‘Rhythm & Meter Patterns’ myself 😅

Changed your life…
❤
Нow can I put 2 or more likes?)) Man, It's awesome!
Nasty🤢🤢🔥🔥🔥 drums are tuned to perfection
This is a great execise for developing coordination, but in practical terms it sounds awkword as hell, because it’s so difficult to perform cleanly.
?
Just the 3 stroke ruff are embarrassing me.
But can this guy play any music ,, or just noise
These are the fills that get you fired. His time is so bad he would probably be fired anyway.

Then just do as I say, not as I do, and you'll be golden 👍
Why so mad bub? He crushes this. If ya don’t like it - move on?
