Word of wisdom to anybody building something similar - make the dropped center section deeper than your current saw and shim the saw up to flush. There are few things more irritating than buying a new upgraded saw only to realize it has a thicker base and now you need to modify your bench.
Good idea, thanks for sharing it.
That’s a great idea Bradley - if I do ever change the saw and the base is higher I’ll just have to wrestle the tops off and fix them back down with shims. :)
I was thinking along similar lines, like bolting in the center section do make later modification easier.
I was thinking exactly this when he was putting the saw in... Bad case I guess you could build a recessed tray to make the middle section sit a bit deeper (bonus dust collector!), though that would require redoing those support welds he said he added in the plans.
And worst case, trim the saw's base down.
@@nordishkiel5985 Bolting the center section and whenever you need a new drastically different height just drill some new holes! Ezpz
Nice work Neil! If I were you I would get rid of the cut off saw for a cold saw, best thing I have done in my shop. they cut straighter with a nicer finish and the part doesn't get hot.
Cold saw changed my life cutting steel. The time saved paid for itself in two days.
I was thinking the same thing. The abrasive saws aren't saws at all, they wear and melt their way through the metal. The only downsides to cold saws are the needle-sharp bits they make, but those are preferable to fine dust settling everywhere.
@@Bob_Adkins I'll take the sworf over flying sparks any day 🤣
But you can make nice Damascus with all the swarf
Thanks John! You’re probably right and I’ve thought about it but when the saw i have works well enough it’s difficult to justify it. I would like one though so you never know. :)
I've been wondering how to build a workbench that would survive a nearby asteroid impact. Now I know. Plenty of workspace, indestructible, airtight (nearly so) for dust proofing and nice looking. Amazing design, videography and craftsmanship, as always! Thanks for the lesson.
Thanks Joe - glad you enjoyed it! :)
I feel like you're the last man standing in RUclips who keeps making things.
It's inspiring to see your shop growing and growing from where it was at the very beginning.
The cabinet looks excellent Neil and the finish as always looks great. Brilliant work. You and family Have a safe and wonderful Christmas mate and a prosperous new year 👍🏻👍🏻
Merry Christmas to you too Ian - glad you enjoyed the video. :)😊
Dear Neil, I always have a chuckle when you off-handedly brush past a couple of works of absolute genius as if you think that we mortals are in the same league of creative ability that you have. Your workbench for metal fabrication is simple brilliance and your jig for welding a piece of metal precisely in the Z-axis just shows your talent. To take the cake for ideas however you can’t go past the idea of a single bolt to allow rotation of the cutoff saw. Anyone who has struggled to cut their steel @ 45˚ would appreciate the sheer simple elegance of your idea Neil. I’ve not seen neither elsewhere that you show in your incantation. Well done. Merry Christmas.
Neil, Merry Christmas! Thanks for the virtual companionship in 2021, and for your steady encouragement.
A pleasure to watch. Such meticulous work - obviously the product of good planning, a well equipped workshop and a lot of skill and experience. Wish I could do difficult position MIG welds like him. A joy to see a first class tradesman at work. (And the video shooting and editing are equally as professional.)
I'm the proud owner of an Evolution S355 CPS hacksaw because the S355 MCS was too expensive for my hobby shop... and ever since I bought it I've been thinking about how to get it to turn...
Your idea, although very simple, seems to me to be an excellent solution.
Thumbs up
... and putting it conveniently by the window... a touch of genius...
Awesome build. I've been building all of my shop furnishings out of galvanized fence posts and Steeltek fittings. No welding required, and if I ever move, all I gotta do is unscrew the fittings and the whole thing comes apart. I've built my work bench framing out of it, and topped it with a solid core external door for the worktop. I built my shelves and other odds and ends out of it as well. Steeltek makes for an incredible metal frame system. But yours is so much better in nearly every possible way. What a beauty of a build.
It looks so clean after sanding down the weld lines. Amazing. 🤩
Love the color scheme, makes everything look neat and tidy
Brilliant! Truly a terrific addition your shop, in line with the other professional looking (and functioning!) pieces you have created. I always enjoy your projects, but more and more I anticipate the "little touches" and amazing jigs and methods you devise and use. Believe it or not, I have found ways to use some of them in other types of projects and applications - for which I am grateful! Wishing you and your family the best of the coming season, GRC
Thanks very much George - glad the videos are helpful! :)
Tons of little details that made this a perfect table. Quality work!!!!
That is a massive quality of life improvement. Going to make so many projects and just general shop work SOOO much easier.
All that extra storage underneath as well! Very nice.
Thank you Sir!!! Not overly complicated, looks amazing and perfect for its purpose!
It's a real great pleasure to see you at work, with wood or steel, it's just fantastic! Thank you!
I don’t think I’ll ever need one of these. But I love watching you work anyway. Watching your thought process as you put things together is a learning experience unto itself. I could possibly see adapting this to a wooden miter station and using lumber instead of welding, since that’s a skill set and equipment I don’t possess.
Loved the craftsmanship you put into the table and the expertise you put into the video. Your videos are just so enjoyable to watch and showcase not only your creativity but also the joy you get from working and completing a project. And a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well.
Glad you enjoyed it John! :)
Very well done. Always absolute quality in workmanship and video editing.
I also appreciate that you left the numbers showing ;) Nice to know where things came from when they're re-used and have a good story.
Another masterpiece, Neil, I've suppressed the jealousy just enough to marvel at this iconic piece of grinding-room furniture. A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, Neil, enjoy some time off, you've earned it.
Ha! The green eyed monster afflicts me as well. I guess we’ll just have to settle for vicarious living for now.😂
Thanks very much Keith and merry Christmas to you too! :)
I would love a video tutorial on welding. I know there's plenty out there, but would love your take on tips and tricks on getting those great welds and finish! As a complete novice, I find controlling the bead is way harder than everyone makes it out to be.
Excellent project Neil. I admire your range of skills and techniques and think you are a masterful educator.
I like seeing the pattern from your gate on the welding table.
Thanks for the free/discounted plans lately. Looking forward to getting through some of them and picking up some more.
No worries Matthew - glad they’re helpful to you. :)
Beautiful work as always. Other commenters are saying to get a cold saw too. I highly recommend the Makita LC1230 because they’re cheap and they cut quietly and fast. I put one to work making a flat-strap on end finishing table for our shop requiring over 400 precision cuts. After that project I made another roll around drying rack requiring another ~100 cuts. The blade is still just as sharp as the day we bought it. I don’t fully understand how they work, but I’m perfectly happy believing that it’s magic ✨💫
Looks great! You're projects are always so thorough, covering ever possible detail. Merry Christmas!!
Merry Christmas Neil, another excellent project to round out the year. Some of the small details on this workbench are just excellent, the likes of the catches not being magnetic to avoid filings being attracted just shows how you're always thinking ahead, a real pro.
Great job, that cabinet is built for the ages. Thumbs up and thanks for posting.
Merry Christmas Neil. Thanks for all the entertainment and education throughout the year. Hope you and the fam have a great break.
great cabinet, and I like the rotation idea for the saw.
Excellent work shop furniture. Your great grand children will appreciate that you made it for them.
Wow. That turned out great. Looks so good with the blue and charcoal colors, too. I’m inspired to elevate my shop furniture game. 👊
Thanks Scott- glad you’re inspired! :)
Definetly like the mix of woodwork with steel. Always learning. Thank you Sir.
Well done on the bench and the jig to weld the legs was spot on.
Wish you all too!
Ashtonishing work, thank you for sharing
It’s really a sturdy, attractive, functional build!
Awesome build Neil! You can't beat a quality work bench. Can't wait to see what you make with it. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Another awesome build! If you want to build it for a cold cutting saw, you can also make do without all the steel paneling, but it looks absolutely beautiful like this!
It should have been a great joy creating this factory level high quality workbench, customized for needs, with such a well established workshop. Admire!
I enjoy so much watching how impecable work you do, thank you for share🙏👌
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too, look forward to seeing your work again in the new year.🎅🏻
You really have evolved that shop into something special. You should be proud of yourself.

Have been watching for a while now. Totally brilliant presentation style.
Probably won't ever build this bench but, so many tips, hints and thought processes, for me to use on my projects.

Cheers Chris (England)
Thanks Neil, good job AGAIN
I like your design concepts and follow through with the it
Of course, it helps to have all the material… but this really serves as a video to get ideas from. Your knowledge & skills are invaluable.

Merry Christmas!! Be well mate, enjoy whatever you love!
Happy Holidays to All! I love the window access.
Amazing job! Thanks for the video!
Ingenious !! Love your metal table with the removable slats. The plywood jig for the legs should be patented !!

Exceptionally smart and very stylish
Merry Christmas, Paskerman. Awesome workbench. Will be looking forward to the many projects you'll use it for.
Another great work bench
The little one inch metal pieces to cover the wood. So cute 😂 and the counter sunk holes makes it look so smooooooth.
Your shop is really coming together. That blue looks great.
Congratulations Sir! Nice job!
All you CAST master and sir on a beautifully crafted desk!!!

bloody brilliant with the window!!
Always a pleasure to watch. Happy Holidays!
Excellent project as usual Neil, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year to you and your Family
Genius work! Congratulations, and thanks for sharing
Nice work and attention to detail.
Great video. Really nice attention to detail
Beautiful build as always.
Watching this video has me seriously considering taking welding classes next year.
Thank you for another delightful practical project that's a joy to watch with your skills. Having built many factory-setting workbenches, I have a preference for a 50mm round corner on the outside of steel tops at hip height. Just too many bumping injuries moving heavy items. I look at those very sharp outside points and think about some idiot-proofing. This is similar to the trip hazard comment I made moving the bolt down ties under the bench on your anvil when you built that. I'm so delighted you share with us. :)
You have the best videos! Always look forward to watching them.
Wow, I could see this even used as an industrial looking kitchen station.
Hey, Merry Christmas. Lord bless you.
Seasons greetings to you and many thanks for another years great videos
Love your cabinet work!!!
Need to up my finishing game! Excellent as always and happy holidays!
Looks great and sturdy!
