  • DC Comics finally admit an enormous mistake. Giving Tom Taylor the flagship Superman series and free reign to make any changes he wanted to Jon Kent. Superman: Son of Kal-El is cancelled after only 18 issues. The writing was on the wall for months. Sales tanked after Tom Taylor changed Jon Kent's sexuality to bisexual and only featured gay romance stories in the series. DC Comics are also relaunching Superman with Clark Kent and a new writer and revamping Action Comics starting with issue #1051. It wasn't all good news. DC Comics are putting one of the worst writers in all of comics on Action Comics. DC Comics finally admit mistake, cancel Superman: Son of Kal-El.

Cancelling a Superman tilted book SHOULD be a huge embarrassment to DC. It SHOULD be a wake up call that one of their tent poles failed to hold up it's corner. Superman has been around longer than my grandparents, maybe you should look at why that is instead of becoming the editorial team that oversaw the complete collapse of his name value.

    • @tommyfishhouse8050

DC or Warner Brothers don’t even see Superman as “a tent pole” anymore. They see him more as a nuisance. Because they don’t want to write a character like Superman because the mere existence of such a character makes them feel self-conscious about their own poor lifestyle choices.

They're not going to admit their mistake. If anything, they're going to admit OUR mistake.
We're at fault because we're bad people. Their only mistake was to not know before hand we were too awful to appreciate their flawless comic. The writing isn't bad, it's just too deep for us. The comic isn't boring, we're just bloodthirsty weirdos. The dialogue isn't awful, we're just such bumpkins we don't know how the better people speak. And most of all, we're terrible for wanting the characters we like and not wanting them to change so the writer can signal his virtue.

Finally, they can make Antimatter Jon, AKA 17-year-old Bi Jon, a hero by having him save 10-year-old Jon before he is tortured by Ultraman and Superwoman.

There isn't anything wrong with having Jon just be his usual adorkable self while in love, much like he was with Saturn Girl, and just let the relationship simply exist... Honestly, I often prefer that approach.
Added note: The only *real* emphasis on the relationship not being straight came from outside the story, largely in the form of randos being outraged as if something salacious was happening... The story itself treated Jon's relationship with Jay in little to no particularly special way, which, depending on what you *want* from media containing lgbtqia+ representation, can be seen as either "great", or "not good enough", but either way it's not really a *bad* thing that this relationship was rather unremarkable.

Then, on the "representation" side of things, it's just nice to see a non-straight relationship that *isn't* fighting for its life through problematic behaviors, orientation based drama, and ham-fisted messages or statements about how we *should* view these relationships as normal. Like, you brought up Gladiator, but, unless I'm remembering incorrectly, Gladiator isn't exactly the poster child for a normal, healthy, stable relationship. And again, I get it. People love to watch a train wreck, but when you have all of these ridiculous stigmas and negativity being thrown around at all things non-straight, especially in some comic "fan" forums... It's just nice to just see a bisexual dork and his boyfriend being supportive of each other, communicating clearly, and *not* dealing with any kind of forced relationship drama... yet... I don't have my doubts there's gonna be *some* way it gets added in, whether if it's in the remaining issues, or in the next iteration or whatever...

    1. The Cancelation of Superman: Son Of Kal-el. Good riddance. 18 issues and an annual and what does Tom Taylor have to show for it? A terrible run on a new character and a massive waste of potential.
    2. The Adventures Of Superman: Jon Kent. Too little, too late. Jon fighting Ultraman should've been the story from DAY ONE! I'm not reading this book.
    3. Superman relaunch. Unlike with Tom Taylor, I can give Joshua Williamson some leeway. He's has written some great books. Robin was great and the first 6 issues of Deathstroke Inc were pretty good. Then there's his run The Flash which was incredible. I think Dark Crisis has some form of editorial meddling and Josh not playing to his strengths. So, here's hoping he's on his A-game with Superman. Also, I personally would've gone with Xermanico or Dexter Soy as the artist.
    4. Action Comics revamp. Honestly, I thought Action was fine as is (Main story and backup story). Why do we need an extra backup story, by Leah Williams no less? At least she's only on it for 3 issues.

Any guesses on how long it’ll take for DC to try this again?

If they were serious about getting the fans back, they would realign everything back to where things were before all the woke junk took over and get rid of every woke lunatic that's currently infesting the company. Of course, that would only happen when DC... Or Warner Discovery says screw the ESG.

Wait a minute. Isn't this the comic TT always trots out to say comics are doing just fine? I thought the TPB's were number one, and sold so well every time they launched? Look, we're not dumb. We read comics when they were selling hundreds of thousands and when less than 100K was a failure that got canceled. All of these writers can blow smoke up our tails, but we know a failure when we see it because we've seen them for decades.
This is why American comics are dying. The big two have become netflix. What's the use of a new reader jumping on a series, when it's so poor that it can't even make it to 25 issues? Manga's seem to go on forever and in multiple volumes, with more content, for a better price. The big two seem to not realize they are digging themselves into a hole they won't be able to climb out of.

they let it drag on cause of the merger with discovery and they were doing everything to ruin brand before it was complete and now merger is done David is coming in and crushing things and fun fact he hasn't even started on DC Comics. he is focused on the Movies and TV and games etc.
when he turns his attention to the comics, shit will hit the fan.

Brian Micheal Bendis would have saved this book if he was writing since he did Ultimate Spider-Man (Peter Parker) back in the early 2000's.
But regardless of that however this is the first step of basically admitting that they made a mistake with Jon Kent and now they're owning up to it and they're hoping to try and restore what dignity that this book has left if any, who knows they might try to bring in Chris kent the true son of Superman.
