With all of Seiko's shortcomings, you have to admit they make some of the best dials on the market! I've always been attracted to the Orient Star offerings as well, but I still haven't picked one of those up. Great vid, Shane, and Happy New Year! 🍾🎊🎉
I love my seiko padi monster. Thats the only reason why I did not pull the trigger on the Antarctica. And perhaps better with blue lume, instead of green. Haha
I think it's the disconnect between the Design Department and the Production division. Seiko is one of the best when coming out with fantastic designs, yet production is too concerned with cranking out numbers to focus on quality. So it creates this love / hate relationship with all us watch geeks.
How you can tell that you're getting older, I went to sleep before midnight, I have no hangover and if there were any fireworks I slept through them (thankfully). On the bright side I feel great lol. Happy New Years Shane.
@@RelativeTime I ended up watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith beat each other up till 3:00 I agree with your 🐧🥶 Monster pick , however , I went with the Tuna version and put on an Irukandji Bracelet since already have a couple Monsters . 🥂🍾
I don't see any misaligned chapter ring or bezel in the photos of your happy feet monster. It's a great watch and I'm glad you enjoy it! 😃 Thanks for another great year of watch reviews!
I don't have 10 watches, but my favourite watch release of last year is the Christopher Ward C63 line. I ordered a white three hander when they released, and it has become my favourite watch. My second favoutite watch from last year is my Marathon Navigator. I love the grab-and-go convenience of the quartz movement, and the glow of the tritium.
In the spring of 2021 I was agonizing over choosing the SWC Bunker or the Axios Pathfinder as my "only" watch purchase of the year. I didn't include price in my deliberations because I wanted to buy the watch that I would enjoy long after I forgot about how much I paid for it. In the end, the ridiculous amount of text on the face of the Bunker turned me off, and I chose the Pathfinder. I love its look, and the bracelet is very comfortable. Of course, now that it is 2022, I can start thinking about a new watch. If they released a Bunker without "The Swiss Watch Company" script ruining the look, I would buy it in a minute. As for the "only" watch of 2021, I caved and bought an Citizen Eco Drive field watch that was "on sale", while I was waiting for the delivery of my Pathfinder. So much for financial discipline.
Arent we all a slave to our desires? I bought 4 watches tho last year, all Alixpress special and Casios. The Casio made me fall in love all over again with quartz.
I don't have a top ten, because I only bought two. So these are my top two. Thank you so much for the review of the Aragon Divemaster 42mm. I bought that exact model (blue dial, rubber strap) on the strength of your review and the great photos. Some watches look better in photos than in person, some the reverse, but the Aragon in person looks EXACTLY like your photos. It looks great and it's a great value for $139. My other watch is not a great value. It's the Bulova 96A164. Quartz, mineral crystal, and only 30m water resistance for $135. But its dial looks like nothing else. Its case and lugs are distinctive too. It's definitely its own design, not a homage of anything.
Hi Shane, the Mandala really caught my eye. As to my favorite watch of last year, well it's kind of weird because it has been in my rotation for a couple years and I pretty much ignored it till now. I tried many straps on it including a US beads of rice bracelet and no go. So I ordered a beautiful green snake skin strap and in the mean time put it up for sale. Before a received a good offer I got the new strap and when I put it on WALLAH! What a beauty and that is my Seiko sarb 017 Alpinist. Shane, thank you for all your great reviews of 2021......
Like yourself the stand out watch of the year for me personally was the Mandala but have seriously fell for the Orient star since your review. Wishing you continued success in 2022.👍
Great reviews! I ended up with 2 bunkers. The brown first.....crazy lume like no other . Then i bought the gray dial. Very handsome. Worth much more than they cost. I also have the antarctic monster....but a jdm with kanji. The alignment is perfect. I had a hard time finding one. Thanks again.
My watch of the year is the DuFrane Waterloo. If you haven't given that one a look, I suggest doing so. Dial for day and a unique flare. Thanks for the content!
A Casio Oceanus T200 has become my go to travel watch, and I’m flying weekly. As much as I like a true GMT, having the Oceanus connect to my phone and auto adjust is easy and satisfying to watch. May go back to a GMT if I start flying international again but I will not leave the country for any reason right now.
Well the heart wants what the heart wants and be it a Seiko with subpar specs such as a crappy Hardlex and misalignment issues. Certainly I wouldn't have picked this as the number one. Other than this there are a lot of remarkable watches in the line-up, such as the SWC bunker. If this was a 38 or 39 I would have most likely purchased. Or the Phoibos Nebula. Among a lot of watches with awkward design elements it's the only Phoibos I like. Or the Oceanus being a really outstanding watch with unique features and an amazing build quality. Happy new year Shane! 🎉
Somewhat related to the #1 choice, my #1 this year is the Islander "Ice Monster" ISL-56 (original monotone bezel). Sky blue on white dial. I swapped the strap for a grey-blue nato for the perfect Summer watch & now realize the original metal band makes for a great Winter watch
This is what a top 10 list should be. I liked every watch on this list and will be checking several of them out. Great job! Of what was mentioned, I only have the Vario 1918 myself and also love it. Close to one mentioned, I have the SWC ARK which is their quartz follow up to the Bunker. It's a great watch - especially for me as it's smaller for my smaller wrist.
That's nice! Coincidently my favorite watch of 2021 is a 4th gen Seiko monster, only the PADI version (although not released in 2021, but I acquired that year). Happy new year!
Hi Shane. Thanks for your great videos this past year. Thanks to your assessment of the "Cheshire" earlier in 2021, I purchased one based on your review and have been impressed by this Made in Japan Orient Star. Looking forward to your reviews of other watches in 2022. Keep up the great work on RUclips.
Happy New Year 👍 . I like the way you choose your most memorable rather than doing an objective 'best of' list. I agree that Seiko is beautiful, I would be happy to overlook the flaws. My favourite of 2021 is the new Vostok 720889, I was lucky to get one for Christmas and I love it 😁
Very cool. I was looking at that one. Does it have a 24 hour movement with it? I wound up getting the blue version with 12 hour dial. The 720888. I want to get a review done soon, but have a huge backlog right now.
@@RelativeTime Yes I bought the 24 hour black dial, I was really tempted by the blue one, but really fancied trying the 24. I'll look forward to your review, but don't worry there's no rush 👍
Glad to see the Vario trench got a special mention, though it may not technically qualify. I bought the black one, and it is definitely my favorite in the collection (of very affordable watches). Grey looks great too.
Keep up the great ethic behind make watch collecting accessible to many. Great channel. My top 3, 8 have moved on from collecting only affordable watches, are the JLC Reverso Tribute Blue, the new Omega Bond SM, à Nomos Club Automatic, a fantastic Titanium Seiko Shogun…….and many many more (especially Tudor and IWC) . Best to your channel for 22.
I have a nighthawk world-timer and it is a lot more fun to travel with than the GMT, because it adjusts the time automatically with the hand at the current city, and it costs half the price!
Some very interesting choices Shane. Certainly has me thinking about the next stage in the collecting journey. Also, you are a genius of strap selection.
You won me over with the Seiko Save The Ocean Monster. I own that watch and couldn't agree more....warts and all. Now I just need you to talk me into buying the Hamilton H70515137. When my wife starts yelling I need someone to blame.
Thanks for the video Shane, I absolutely agree with your number one. The second I saw it, I knew I was going to buy one. I knew the flaws going in, but I just didn't care. I love the watch. Keep the vids coming, and Happy New Year!
Shane you should check out the Draken Tugela. It is a solid build, 300 meters, very cool dial and incredible lume. It even beats the Orient Star Diver on lume!
That's a really nice selection of watches. Reminds me I need a Luftwaffe-style flieger...maybe a Laco though. And that Longines VHP GMT... if it was 100m water resist it would be on my wrist right now.
Hé Shane, I wish you all the best for this year! 100% True, the nicest watch of 2021. I have it on my wrist also. EscapementTimes has also an amazing quartz watch. I'll definatly will buy a Nighthawk 2.0, but the once I saw had awefull missaligned second hand all 360 degrees. I bought 2 Seestern watches, MAS62 and 300T hommage, last year and they are also a lot of value/fun for the money.
my favorite watch of 2021 is the Seiko SPB245. Witch is a bit funny, because i never get the hype around the Alpinist line. But this one is different, because all things about the alpinist line, wichim not like are not there: no cathedral hands, no compass bezel, no outdated indizes and numbers. The striking triangles hands and indizies, the deep green sunburst effect, the subtle but gorgeous gold colour of the second hand, everything speaks to me. and, you want believe it: its a seiko under 1000$ with a saphire crystal (miracles happened even in 2021 xD).
Another great video Shane. My favorite watch PURCHASED this year is the Glycine Combat Sub GL0076 with black dial and great bezel. I have other Combat Subs but had been looking for a good price on this one. Well made, classy, thin and comfortable. Next favorite purchase was the Escapement Time Flieger type B and I totally agree with your comments. After that the was my Axios Pathfinder. Wish I had bought the Mandala though and it would have possibly been my favorite.
Great list of watches, love the Phoibis Nebula, always think how greatest would be to have a lumed date wheel so we could see it inside the lumed frame. The Christmas present from my wonderful wife was a Seiko Samurai SRPE35, (perfectly aligned!) and I love it. I bought a Mudmaster GG-1000-1A3DR for myself and can't take it off! Happy New Year Shane and to all fellow watch nerds 🤓!!
It's a shame that now in early March 2022 that I noticed that I haven't watch one of your videos in a long time. (You can blame the YT algorithm) Anyways, this is a great recap and I look forward to watching more of your excellent videos. My top watch are any of the Seiko Willard releases. My go to watch style and I have 4 differed models.
Aragon took my interest after watching your RE VIEW on that 42 mm blue dial watch. For some RE A SUN EYE haven't picked it up but it still has my interest but the lume was also important to me.
I bought that exact same Aragon watch based on Shane's review. It's a stunner. Beautiful, built like a tank, for not much money. I have seen brighter lume, but the lume on mine is at least decent.
Hi Shane, well that was quite the list! I was surprised by the Monster btw, I only have a 3 watch list for 2021, the two I got from my 96 year old dad were a complete surprise! The other a Vostok Amphibian SE 720B35 "Coke" sandwich dialed beauty. Back to my dad's, one was a Elgin dress quartz "yellow gold" rectangular 2 diamond baguette (very small) at the 12 & 6 positions, my girlfriend and I both really like it! The number 1 watch of 2021 for me is the Tag Heuer Formula 1 quartz waz1120.bb0879 two-tone that retailed for 2100.00, it has the 6003.d Rhonda movement I believe, mind you I would never buy a quartz that expensive, I'm pretty sure he paid full price too 😳! It's a Beauty alright It does it 98% of the indices (that's a plus) and it's plated in 18k yellow gold, but the movement shocked me at its cost! 😱 Anyway I'll never get rid of it. Good video and a Happy New Year!
Love seeing the Longines VHP Getty some due respect. I would love to have one but ultimately the 50m wasn’t enough for me so I went with a quartz conquest with 300m. 100 m and I’d be all over it. But I get solid accuracy with the quartz and great water resistant rating so I’m content with the trade off.
Re Aragon, buy an RLG. Better size and better movement. Available in the UK for £245. I owned the escapent time Flieger, and sold it because of the large size. great watch for the money though. The Longines is just gorgeous, although expensive. Like the SWC, but not a fan of the Citizen. I own the Nebula, and bought it as result of your original review. Best watch Phoibos have made, although I don't like the dots around the outside of the dial. I really fancy the Mandela, and would like it in the salmon. Unfortunately a tad expensive, so may have to wait for a good used one. Not a fan of Seiko, but always have an eye open for an Orient Star or that Vario at the right price. Unfortunately I am not a fan of the Monster, but like the dial colour. Of course, you could buy a Heimdallr, Monster, and get sapphire and a better bracelet. All for a fraction of the price.I did a watch of the year award you may want to watch if you get the time. Loved this video, as I do all of your work
Some point this year I'll get an RLG. Always heard great things about them. I've had one a couple Heimdallrs, and can attest to how good they are. Right now they don't have a Antarctica version. But if they ever do, I might pick up one to compare.
Great list Shane! How would that SWC field watch compare to a Lum-Tec in a head to head lume war? I greatly enjoy your videos throughout the year. Happy New Year!
I recently got a Lum-Tec. One of the solar powered compressor style watches. I'll try to have a review some point soon, but I was honestly disappointed in the lume. It's good, but not crazy good like I was expecting. So compared to that one, I'd say the bunker beats it easily.
'Crank it up to 11' ... nice Spinal Tap reference ... I still say Seiko could have a hit with a dinosaur Monster series ... different dinosaurs tracks ... maybe simulate those half buried fossilized dinosaurs eggs, or half buried t-rex skull on the dial etc.
Yup. If you look close the thumbnail for the video also has the Alamo in the background. No real reason why. I was just looking for a good photo to use as the background.
I love your channel. Another great video. Im in the hunt now for my first high end watch "at least for me" im looking for an omega mark 40 triple date. Any wisdom for me
Introduces merch, signs off as ‘This is “Shame” with Relative Time’ (all kidding aside you have one of the best logos out there and I will be waiting for said merch. When will Relative Time bourbon be available though?
Seiko: I already have the orange and the ice monster - on which the hour hand is misaligned. 500+ bucks for such a poor quality control? I wouldn't pay 50 for that. No way.
New Nighthawk: has lost one of the sliderule calculation features. Which only doesn't matter to so done who's not using it at all. In which case the question arises, why is it then needed at all?
@@RelativeTime you're right. Do you like the new dial? I think it's pretty classy. Not original, but well done. And the color of the green is an improvement.
They do, and I have 12 of them. Six quartz, two solar quartz, and four automatics. The most expensive one was $180. No flaws on any except my beautiful little SNKK87 which has a misaligned 12 o'clock marker. But she has such a pretty face that all is forgiven.
Seiko have way too many faults for me which is a shame as they produce some cool designs. I had two King Turtle Save The Ocean watches and the faults were all over so back they went. Misaligned chapter ring misaligned rotating bezel, cyclops at an angle, assembly flaws on the hour markers and so on. Most horrible was the screw down crown which just felt like scratchy grinding metal. It’s a great pity as the watch looked great for the money but I guess I’m too picky to accept the shoddy assembly methods and lack of precise engineering. The movement wasn’t too bad running at +10s/day. But take a brand like Tissot. The made in Switzerland thing really shows Seiko up. And the movement benefits from swatch group engineering running well within COSC at a similar price to Seiko. In fact it find at +2s/day. No dial faults found under a x10 loupe. So I won’t be looking for another Seiko as I feel their watches are mass produced with no real pride in their production, just get them out of the door in bulk and keep tweaking designs without caring about product quality.
I've had two of my Seikos suffer violent falls, one face down on a hardwood floor, the other flung face down on a tile floor without scratching either one's crystal. I couldn't find damage of any kind on the hardwood floor watch, and the other has only the tiniest scratch on the bezel. These were both Hardlex crystals. I will say that Seiko 5s with the 7s26 movement are pretty lousy watches. They don't keep very good time and you can't hand-wind them. But as sparkly, desirable objects they reign supreme.
With all of Seiko's shortcomings, you have to admit they make some of the best dials on the market! I've always been attracted to the Orient Star offerings as well, but I still haven't picked one of those up. Great vid, Shane, and Happy New Year! 🍾🎊🎉
Almost every Seiko does indeed have a beautiful dial, even (especially?) Seiko 5s.
Isn't it funny how Seiko can screw up so much and yet still make the watch darn lovable? It's a gift.
I love my seiko padi monster. Thats the only reason why I did not pull the trigger on the Antarctica. And perhaps better with blue lume, instead of green. Haha

I bought that exact same Aragon watch based on Shane's review. It's a stunner. Beautiful, built like a tank, for not much money. I have seen brighter lume, but the lume on mine is at least decent.
@@samdeatton181 With that said, EYE might just pick ONE up later this year.
Yay. 22!
May it just not be quite as bad as 2019, 2020, and 2021 were 🤕
Happy new year
Hi Shane, well that was quite the list!
Great review as always. A few interesting ones.
Happy new year ! Awesome video !
Thanks, smae to you.
Happy New Year.
Good video once again love the shots of San Antonio it looks like..
Yup. If you look close the thumbnail for the video also has the Alamo in the background.
No real reason why. I was just looking for a good photo to use as the background.
Where do you shop for straps? You have some nice ones on display in your videos p
I went with the baby tuna over the monster but I love that dial! Good list
Thanks!
Happy New Year!
Great rundown, Shane!
Thanks!
Love the Happy Feet Monster - wear it often.
Have you kept it on the bracelet? Lately I've had mine on a barton Sailcloth / silicone strap.
@@RelativeTime So far, on the bracelet. I am looking at other options. Haven't settled on anything else.
Fun list, some real beauties in there. Happy New Year!
Happy new year!
I love your channel. Another great video. Im in the hunt now for my first high end watch "at least for me" im looking for an omega mark 40 triple date. Any wisdom for me
I've always been looking at the Seamaster, Aqua Terra, or Railmasters. Ones that I'd could wear almost every day, and not just for special occasions.
The bunker has been a great watch
Happy New Year! But wait...No Zelos? Kray-Kray.
I only wound up looking at one this year, at it was a bit larger. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see more this year.
Thank you for the video 👍🏼👊🏼
Introduces merch, signs off as ‘This is “Shame” with Relative Time’
(all kidding aside you have one of the best logos out there and I will be waiting for said merch. When will Relative Time bourbon be available though?
Bourbon eh? That's a good idea.
Give us your take on the 2021 Kamasu, I remember you loved the original.
From what I've seen, they are basically the same thing, but with a fume gradient dial and dots instead of bars.
@@RelativeTime you're right. Do you like the new dial? I think it's pretty classy. Not original, but well done. And the color of the green is an improvement.
It looks great. I'm not sure how available they are worldwide. They might be a JDM thing at the moment.
@@RelativeTime on Amazon as we speak. The LE is actually a few $ cheaper than the others.
Wow! I like my Wal-Mart $9.00 watch. Works great.
Say what you want about Seiko but admit they make some of the best dials out there.
They do, and I have 12 of them. Six quartz, two solar quartz, and four automatics. The most expensive one was $180. No flaws on any except my beautiful little SNKK87 which has a misaligned 12 o'clock marker. But she has such a pretty face that all is forgiven.
EXCELLENT!!!
I don't like the Seiko's hard-luck crystal.
Heimdallr still makes the best seiko. Lol.
LOL... True.
Happy New Year!
