As a hardcore EV enthusiast, this is an absolutely fantastic video. It's incredibly impressive how you were able to include so much accurate information, while making it easy for everyone to understand. I learned quite a bit from this video and I own two EVs!
I’m a retired mechanic. My daughter bought the Mach E. I needed to get an education on the kWh aspects of range and charging. Tom does a fantastic job of explaining electric car terminology. I enjoyed the video so match I watched it twice.
One of my friends from college was from Oregon and had never filled his own gas. We went to college in Hawaii he took his friend to the airport and had to fill up on the way back. Dude took thirty minutes to figure out how to pump gas 😂, so I guess we all don’t know how to do it! Sorry couldn’t help myself as that was one of the funniest gas stories I have heard. This is such a good video though thanks for the charts on the breakdowns. Most people just throw the KWH’s at you and the range gained per hour and then move on so pretty refreshing to see such an exhaustive video on this.
@@Rizzocartel I think he was using the 120 volt adapter which allows you to charge from a regular wall electrical outlet. The method is rated at 1.5 KWh so only adds about 4 miles or range every hour.
Get a 240v nema 14-50 plug and it will charge much faster. I just use the mobile charger that came with mine. Works great. We have one that’s mounted to the wall and the second one that came with my second MME goes with us.
I just bought Mach E today! I had so much anxiety as this is my first EV. YOU ARE AWESOME! This has dismissed any anxiety I had. This was so easy to understand and watch!
This was SO informative! After watching, I plan to just go with what Ford provides. The dealer knew next to nothing about charging. I like that he covered so many options- from home charging to public charging. Great video!
Tom is almost the "godfather" of EV commentary. I have corresponded with him going back to 2015 when we both had BMW i3's. I have never personally met him, but he has always had a wealth of information which he shares liberally. The only thing I would add or emphasize to his discussion is that the chart he shows is about Level 2 home charging. Most ICE drivers are leary about "converting" to an EV because of charging time. I hardly ever "wait" for charging...what happens while I'm asleep is not something I'm "waiting" for. But if you're on the road the chart would look totally different. With DCFC (DC Fast Charging) you are rarely talking about more than 'minutes' (not hours) to charge to 80%. I recently drove my Mach E from Salt Lake City to LA. I stopped to charge 5 times, but I only "waited" for 10 minutes, total. Why? Because bathroom breaks, grabbing a sack of peanuts and/or a soft drink all happened WHILE the car was charging...so 4 out of 5 times when I got back to the car it was already close to 80%. For daily driving (charging at home) you NEVER actually wait as long as it would take to fill a gas tank (because it happens overnight). In moving from ICE to EV your entire paradigm/mindset has to shift to a whole different set of behaviors and expectations, but after you get used to that (maybe 10 days max), it's actually (a) something you don't think about and (b) much easier than your former life.
i guess im asking randomly but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I somehow lost the account password. I appreciate any help you can give me
@Jaden Jasper I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Ordered my Mach E last week. Electrician will be installing a 14-50 outlet shortly and I ordered a Grizzl-E EVSE because my daughter is getting a PHEV and having a dedicated EVSE will benefit both vehicles. Then to wait for my Mach E. Thank you for this great content!
Bro, I can't say how awesome this video has been (I'm not even finished yet and I had stop and comment). I just leased a Mach-E yesterday and I've already had so much anxiety about being so unfamiliar with all these new technologies, terms, and networks. You've singlehandedly dispelled every reservation I've had about my decision to go electric. Everything about charging this car makes infinitely more sense now. None of the information on the FordPass app managed to explain things to me as well as you have in just 20 minutes. Thank you so much for making this video. *subscribed*
I see very similar comments and wasnt going to add an extra one, but this video more than deserves it. After days of research and reading SO MANY different opinions, this video perfectly summarized exactly the core content and then some! I feel so much more informed!! Thank you
Thank you so much Tom. This video filled in a lot of gaps for me about home charging so much so that I feel I could explain it to others pretty easily.
Hi Tom, I have watched your video over and over because I am so impressed with the facts you provided. In fact, I used it as a guide to instruct my electrician regarding the 240v outlet installation. I am days away from the delivery of my first full EV. I have a PHEV but can’t wait to drive the Mach-E premium. Thank you for a great job well done. It is the best charging guide out there.
Thanks for this. Have you done this same information vid for the new 2023 Mach e ? I’ve heard the standard range is a LFP and can be charged to 100% more often, and the charging curve is better and charges faster after 80% now. Really appreciate your videos.
I purchased a Mach e and will pick it up Saturday. This video was very informative and also helped me think differently about the huge amount of money I was going to spend on a EVSE because I realize I don’t really need it .
Great job, Tom. Thank you. (Edit: this was from mid-2021 and may have since been resolved) At 30:00 I would say that Kyle of Out of Spec found that once you use up for your free 250kW of charging with Plug and Charge, there's no way to switch over to a paid Electrify America account. This means that once you exhaust the free charging, you can only pay the highest cost using Plug and Charge and will not have access to the discounted rates that EA subscribers will have access to. I hope Ford and EA are working on this or have already solved it. The guest rate is significantly higher than the discounted member rate. So while Plug and Charge is great during the free period, it becomes significantly less useful once it comes time to start paying for charging. Plug and Charge needs to be able to switch over to the discounted member rate after the free period is over.
These charging guides are super important for née drivers or for those trying to get the most out of their batteries. Thank you for this great series! As always you are THE authority on all things EV charging.

These are very insightful and educational videos. I'm loving the color of the Mach E. Thank you for making it easy to switch over to a BMW i3. I don't think I'm going back to a ICE.
What advice do you have for folks with the MACH E who live in a apartment and cant plug their car up. I'm using EVgo everyday feeling like I should of stayed with a gas car.
You should definitely put some affiliate links up for the chargers brother. I'm about to order one of them and would've loved to have given you credit for it.

Great video! If you set the preferred charging time to take advantage of lower electric rates from 11:00PM to 7:00AM and a departure time for 7:00AM and the car only needs 2 hours to reach the desired charge. Will the car charge to the desired charge right away and be finished around 1:00AM, will it wait until about 5:00AM and start charging to finish around 7:00AM, or will it start at 11:00PM and slow charge continuously until about 7:00AM?

Great video Tom - especially for new EV owners. One minor point about the Mach E . . . pre-conditioning . . . the cabin will ONLY pre-condition if the car is connected to power. So if you are not plugged in at work, the car (at least currently) will not warm up for you unless you manually start it.
OK, Thanks - I didn't know that. Most EVs will allow you to schedule precon even when they aren't plugged in, so I just assumed that. Thanks for the corrention!

Say the battery is at 50% , if it’s plugged in at 9 pm assuming it will auto cut off when it’s done charging .. and the cut off will kick in ?
