A lot of people are calling this game the "better No Straight Roads" but honestly? Both are really good in different ways and there's no need to pit them against each other. We should be demanding MORE aesthetically-driven action-rhythm passion project games, they are such a treat
@@lakshaykochhar6799 You should!! It's more of a music-based boss rush narrative than a full on rhythm game, and it's fairly short, but the story it tells is important and the characters are so fun. The world/worldbuilding is also very unique and I spent hours just hopping around the city getting all the collectables and talking to npcs! It's stuck with me for years
As someone who was a big fan of NSR when it first came out, when I played this game I honestly thought that this is the game that NSR *should* have been. I still like NSR (except the community), but in all honesty the "rhythm" aspect for that game was more so just to assist you in dodging and parrying boss attacks (in which the beat is still hard to identify imo). Meanwhile Hi-Fi RUSH has rhythm apply to EVERYTHING, and the beats are easy to identify. Plus, the platforming segments in between the combat sections were pretty enjoyable compared to the approaches in NSR. That, and HFR just has a lot more content. I don't know what else to say that wasn't already in the video; I like No Straight Roads, but I *love* Hi-Fi RUSH.
the fact that every single part of the map has atleast 3 things moving to the beat of the song, which is just fucking cool but also is important for gameplay and matching heavy attacks to the beat is incredible
don't forget one of the bosses with a surprise twist with how they fight is such a fun motif + their copyright free song is extra fitting too! everyone has their own character even with the cheesy food naming schemes but it makes them all the more memorable loved seeing a video of this so soon, definitely one of those unique games that's a blast to play through without any dull moments
This game is a love letter to what gaming used to be. Simple and well put togheter fun and you can really feel while playing that the devs had fun aswell creating this masterpiece.
Honestly I don't mind the side-of-salt naming. I watch these videos for your reviews and crisp animations, I don't care if the games are out of salt or out of sugar. It's just a nice name that I instantly correlate with your channel. Also hi-fi rush good.
As someone who’s almost 100% competed this game (All achievements, S crown rank on every level and difficulty, every purchasable and unlockable etc) This is one of my favourite games because of the references, the amazing art style, music and best of all it’s a really interesting and unique idea. The game is perfect for new players and people who love difficult games as there’s extra rewards for beating the game on the harder difficulty with all S ranks, The bosses are also very unique, all introducing a new ability that you can use in for the future. There’s even a mode after beating the game called the Rhythm Tower where you have a timer which goes down and you progress through more and more difficult floors as well as re-fighting every boss for a total of 60 floors and it’s also a great way to earn the currency used to upgrade powers. To sum it up, It’s a great rhythm game for both new and more complex players and if you have Xbox Gamepass it’s definitely worth a try
The game play style of a protagonist going around smashing this with a guitar reminds me of No Straight Roads, another rhythm beat em up, and I think that's genuinely so cool, I loved NSR and was looking for another game with a similar vibe!
The thing that proved to me that Hi Fi Rush was loved throughout development was the tango gameworks snail Easter egg in level 4. The hologram effect just kinda showed me that they did love making this awesome game.
It's so satisfying to see a game that comes out and...that's it. It's out, it's playable, and it's great. They poured their hearts into this and it absolutely shows.
The best part of it all, is that the money spent on marketing could be channelled to game polish. If people like a game they'll willingly market for you themselves
i think the most entertaining things about this game is its references to almost every aspect of music. all of chai's moves reference guitar parts or effects, each song introduced by the white text is referencing how music videos used to be introduced on TV, or even just artists featured in the soundtrack. seeing the likes of nine inch nails, the prodigy, and the black keys all seamlessly fitting into the game's aesthetic is astounding and amps up a lot of the excitement
Another thing I love is that the story just starts when you start the game. No elaborate backstory or super long intro to explain the world - you just know you're a guy who wants to be a rockstar. The story unravels at a good tempo, too. Be prepared for an *incredibly* difficult true final boss fight, though. After you complete the game, there's a set of challenge rooms that unlock the final battle and MAN it's rough. Chai really has to give it his all in that fight.
The game opens with Lonely Boy by The Black Keys a band my favorite teacher introduced me to and then proceeded to play R6 Siege with me and my friends and then got 4 aces and beat us all in 10 round 1v1s 8 times each The dude had just gotten an Xbox and only played FUCKING TETRIS BEFORE THIS WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH HISTORY TEACHERS AND BEING SO FUCKING CRACKED
I was on the fence about the game, but hi-fi rush won me over with the ability to pet 808 and zanzo's constant references. Came for cat and funny jojo, stayed for best girl Korsica
Honestly I had watched about 2 minutes of gameplay, stopped myself, and bought the game because I knew I was going to love it and god am I glad that I went into it blind because this is possibly one of the best games I have played in YEARS, And that includes things like Super Mario Odyssey! Definite must-buy if you love rhythm games and honestly I played through the whole story in 12 hours and I didn't take a single break, it was like the game had latched onto me because this game was an amazing experience all together and held my attention the whole way through! 12/10 Would Love To Play Again!!!
Funny enough. The reason why the game never got a promotion is because (SPOILERS FOR THE STORY) -the big bad boss hates promotion or trying to promote product because you have to catch the buyers eye to make them want your product. Which is why project Armstrong happened. Pretty funny
The stealth drop initially pulled me in to look at the trailer and that is what got me to at least try it out (PC Gamepass). I really expected some lightly put together backdrop of a plot to move the game along so we can do the rhythm game parts, but quickly realized that this wasn't just some rhythm game... it was an actual, fully fleshed out game that used rhythm mechanics. What amounts to a sort of tutorial (which is fun) is longer than most rhythm games are in their entirety. Phenomenal animations, vibrant colors, genuinely funny writing, and just all around fun gameplay makes Hi-Fi Rush a desperately needed breath of fresh air. The irony being a game that feels exactly like what is now an "old" style of game design feels fresh.
I'm loving this game. I'm not very good at rhythm games after just a couple of hours I was instinctively pressing the buttons in time to the beat and hitting the parry when I heard that distinctive sound effect of an incoming attack. The lack of a lock-on is the only flaw I can think of. Too often I'd summon Peppermint to shoot out an enemy's shields only to have her target the wrong enemy. Same thing for grappling and specials.
Some post game spoilers, read at your discretion. as you replay levels, you still have all your teammates backing you up, including Macaron. that means that if you play the level introducing the greenies, then you can beat the first one with Mac. of course this means that you can't move on like normal, so CNMN just retcons that moment and triggers the cutscene like normal. the devs knew what they were doing.
I just love when a game feels worth it been exploring the indie game scene more lately and I am glad to hear a game that looks that good was well worth getting
For those who like Hi-Fi Rush, you should check out No Straight Roads! Its play style is similar, with a wonderful art style and banger music to go with it. Metronomik, the developers of NSR, enjoy this game a lot too. Both are great games, and I love them both dearly :)
The whole note of this feeling like a GameCube game is so accurate, it's got that experimental charm I love about a lot of more niche games from the 6th generation (Guitaroo Man, another rhythm game, comes to mind) that's sorely missed right now
This game was excellent and one of the best gaming experiences ive had in decades. It was just brilliant. It knows what it is, it knows that its silly and takes it in stride. It quickly joined my list of favorite games of all time. Just great, a breath of fresh air for this age of gaming.
WOW! Man, I agree with absolutely everything you say here. Only things keeping this game from perfection are: 1. No quick-turn camera (pressing the right stick down for it would be an EASY solution). 2. No lock-on (this one would be harder to implement, but a blessing if it ever comes out). 3. No checkpoint reload option in the pause menu (if you fail to do something for an achievement, you gotta start the level all over again). 4. No full tutorial skips for the 2nd playthrough and after (I'm sure this could be fixed in a day). 5. Info and cutscenes are missing if you replay levels after finishing the story (because some of the story happens in the hideout and now your characters are end-game mode there). If they'd fix all that (and some minor stuff) with a final patch, I'd buy this game again 3 times at least and gift to friends, because it deserves all the success it can have! Hopefully one day we have a sequel. I'm not a sequel fan, but this game left me wanting more from its characters and fun!
i am notoriously awful at video games. ESPECIALLY fighting games but GOD this game makes you feel so fucking cool!!! even if you kinda suck!!! you feel AWESOME!!!
Honestly I wasn't too sure about the game, it looked fun and I heard good things about it, but I was worried the rhythm aspect of it would make the combat feel clunky. After this though, (and hearing it's only 30 bucks?? Guys from the visuals alone this deserves the 60) I'm definitely giving it a look. Gotta support fresh ideas with actual love in them like this, ya know?
I first discovered the game via a randomly recommended "all Bosses and Ending" video, what really ended up capturing me in that video was the Korsica boss fight, especially because I play an instrument myself.
1:17 the perfect shirt for the deluxe edition, one of those "I ** and all I got was this stupid T-shirt" the best kind of t-shirt you can get after doing something. Baby wearing that all day if I actually got one in real life!
I just beated the main game and gotta say, the game is a 9/10, EVERYTHING goes with the beat and has a beat and is so rythmic, and the maleechanics are fun, and the graphics are awesome with some choppy animation and 2d animation which I think is in a sort of anime style, and it is all so funny, I don't know what to say that is making the game a 9/10 but there are rimes when you just can't take down an enemy and the dying gets repetitive and I don't play many rhythm game so the timing is a bit hard and frustratinh but overall the game is just FUN PUNCH, FUN BLAST, FUN SMACK everywhere.
What‘s funny is that when a friend of mine and I played it we saw where korsica was first shown and I went...she looks like the kind of character that will join the main gang later on. When it actually happened I just went „hah!!! I knew it!!!“
I got this game like a couple hours after they dropped that trailer. This game is an experience. Seeing it and playing it are on totally different scales.
Don't worry about the whole "side of sugar" thing. It was actually really nice to hear you so positive about a game and how much you enjoy it! A lot of times, yeah, it's fun to hear 'the big streamer' talk negatively about a game you have a lot of grimes with, too. This game reminds me sooooooo much of No Straight Roads, which only came out 2 years ago. The “character with guitar as a weapon” genre is on the RISE WOHOOOOO
Pretty much. Hi-Fi Rush is No Straight Roads if it had a higher budget and experience. That's not to say No Straight Roads isn't good, but rather, for the studio's first game, it did pretty well.
The way you describe the game reminds me of Deep Rock Galactic. A masterpiece with only cosmetic DLCs and no paid 'battle pass', only a universal performance pass and masterpieces come by the dozen!
the game becomes a rythm hell in higher difficuties. but most of the time isn't like those Rythm games where you miss a beat no action happens or damage gets low... etc. the game itself explains every attack its on beat so you never miss a beat and have too many indicators Hearing those HEY! while beating the living shit out of a robot its satisfying. the elites with the forced Rythm sequence are hell... but they are fun. Props to the localization team Whoever did the translation and the dubbing (latam spanish) did an extremely good job adapting certain jokes and puns... specially the fired joke. Cinamon Best robot.

A lot of people are calling this game the "better No Straight Roads" but honestly? Both are really good in different ways and there's no need to pit them against each other. We should be demanding MORE aesthetically-driven action-rhythm passion project games, they are such a treat
I honestly haven't played 'No Straight Roads' but from what I have seen, they both seem on par.
At first glance, I considered Hi-Fi Rush's gameplay to be Mad Rat Dead in 3D.
the fact that every single part of the map has atleast 3 things moving to the beat of the song, which is just fucking cool but also is important for gameplay and matching heavy attacks to the beat is incredible
I don't think I've seen a side of salt video in a minute and I'm glad I came back to this.
Every game has 1 of "those" birds, but yeah, this game looks killer and rad
don't forget one of the bosses with a surprise twist with how they fight is such a fun motif + their copyright free song is extra fitting too! everyone has their own character even with the cheesy food naming schemes but it makes them all the more memorable
loved seeing a video of this so soon, definitely one of those unique games that's a blast to play through without any dull moments
This game is a love letter to what gaming used to be. Simple and well put togheter fun and you can really feel while playing that the devs had fun aswell creating this masterpiece.
Tbh I really want a series called a side of sugar where Scott just talks about games he likes because I really like it when Scott is posative.
This game is a brilliant piece of work, Tango put so much soul into it. I pray we get a sequel but i doubt it
Genuinely feels like a perfect early 2000s time capsule.
Honestly I don't mind the side-of-salt naming. I watch these videos for your reviews and crisp animations, I don't care if the games are out of salt or out of sugar. It's just a nice name that I instantly correlate with your channel. Also hi-fi rush good.
4:04 you're telling me that gamefreak can't even make a working ingame camera system when zandronum, a FUCKING DOOM ENGINE, CAN?
As someone who’s almost 100% competed this game
(All achievements, S crown rank on every level and difficulty, every purchasable and unlockable etc)
This is one of my favourite games because of the references, the amazing art style, music and best of all it’s a really interesting and unique idea.
This game came out of nowhere
and it's one of my favorite rhythm games now
I understood “buy it for Korsika”, out of the six and a half minutes
The game play style of a protagonist going around smashing this with a guitar reminds me of No Straight Roads, another rhythm beat em up, and I think that's genuinely so cool, I loved NSR and was looking for another game with a similar vibe!
Every time I see this game my brain automatically thinks of "No More Heroes" but with a more brighter art style mixed with "Persona".
4:26
3/4 of the Video and we at the
“Side of Sugar”
The thing that proved to me that Hi Fi Rush was loved throughout development was the tango gameworks snail Easter egg in level 4. The hologram effect just kinda showed me that they did love making this awesome game.
It's so satisfying to see a game that comes out and...that's it. It's out, it's playable, and it's great. They poured their hearts into this and it absolutely shows.
The best part of it all, is that the money spent on marketing could be channelled to game polish.
If people like a game they'll willingly market for you themselves
2:21 OMG!! JOJO REFERENCE!
i think the most entertaining things about this game is its references to almost every aspect of music. all of chai's moves reference guitar parts or effects, each song introduced by the white text is referencing how music videos used to be introduced on TV, or even just artists featured in the soundtrack. seeing the likes of nine inch nails, the prodigy, and the black keys all seamlessly fitting into the game's aesthetic is astounding and amps up a lot of the excitement
Oh yeah! I also was mighty intimidated but with a lot of luck i managed it first try! But i had to use the mighty secret weapon for this!
The game opens with Lonely Boy by The Black Keys a band my favorite teacher introduced me to and then proceeded to play R6 Siege with me and my friends and then got 4 aces and beat us all in 10 round 1v1s 8 times each
The dude had just gotten an Xbox and only played FUCKING TETRIS BEFORE THIS
WHAT THE FUCK IS WITH HISTORY TEACHERS AND BEING SO FUCKING CRACKED
I was on the fence about the game, but hi-fi rush won me over with the ability to pet 808 and zanzo's constant references. Came for cat and funny jojo, stayed for best girl Korsica
I feel like this is more of a side of union powder cuz it makes me wanna cry about the state of triple A’s
A side if sugar sounds nice, I would like to see something like that
Honestly I had watched about 2 minutes of gameplay, stopped myself, and bought the game because I knew I was going to love it and god am I glad that I went into it blind because this is possibly one of the best games I have played in YEARS, And that includes things like Super Mario Odyssey! Definite must-buy if you love rhythm games and honestly I played through the whole story in 12 hours and I didn't take a single break, it was like the game had latched onto me because this game was an amazing experience all together and held my attention the whole way through! 12/10 Would Love To Play Again!!!
This game is sick!! Play it y’all. Play it!!!
4:13 speaking of mischief makers, have you heard about Marina getting into smash 64? What a day to be alive.
Funny enough. The reason why the game never got a promotion is because (SPOILERS FOR THE STORY)
-the big bad boss hates promotion or trying to promote product because you have to catch the buyers eye to make them want your product.
For 70 dollars you can either get
Hi-Fi Rush Twice and some snacks
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Make your choice
Ngl i'd take the Zelda even though hi fi rush is cool
@@Amoro22 Same, though I wish Hi-Fi would come to Switch. The aestethic fits and it'd most likely run well
I'm loving this game. Same thing for grappling and specials.
so that’s where the meme came from
i think my favorite part about whatching these videos is seeing your animation change and slowly grow diffrent each time
Woah I haven’t seen you since I was a lil kid lmao glad to see your still doing a side of salt
You're probably still a kid
@@MackmcDeven97 thank you Mr Ugandan knuckles
Ima just throw this out there NO STRAIT ROADS
Some post game spoilers, read at your discretion.
as you replay levels, you still have all your teammates backing you up, including Macaron. that means that if you play the level introducing the greenies, then you can beat the first one with Mac. of course this means that you can't move on like normal, so CNMN just retcons that moment and triggers the cutscene like normal. the devs knew what they were doing.
"Mr. Chai, Sir Macaron has yet to join you. This is cheating!" ~ A character who is also yet to join you, so their appearance is cheating.
I love NSR
The whole note of this feeling like a GameCube game is so accurate, it's got that experimental charm I love about a lot of more niche games from the 6th generation (Guitaroo Man, another rhythm game, comes to mind) that's sorely missed right now
you don’t know how much i want this but i wasted it on totk prime and s3 dlc
This game was excellent and one of the best gaming experiences ive had in decades. It was just brilliant. It knows what it is, it knows that its silly and takes it in stride. It quickly joined my list of favorite games of all time. Just great, a breath of fresh air for this age of gaming.
Why did they have to close this studio
WOW! Man, I agree with absolutely everything you say here.
Only things keeping this game from perfection are:
I'm not a sequel fan, but this game left me wanting more from its characters and fun!
wifi rush
what a plethora of a plethora of a plethira of a plethora of a
bought it for a fluke. i am now fucking addicted to it its GREAT
This game is a classic. No time constraints, complete, no glitches, no microtransactions. It's a legitimate video game.
i am notoriously awful at video games. ESPECIALLY fighting games but GOD this game makes you feel so fucking cool!!! even if you kinda suck!!! you feel AWESOME!!!
I've been saying we need a cell shaded action rpg's akin to DMC or Metal Gear Rising, and here it is. And it looks EVERY bit of good as I expected.
“Mom I want No More Heroes”
“We have No More Heroes at home.”
“Actually this is pretty good.”
"Ah frick this is better."
When the great value brand is better than the name brand 😤
@@wurtknurte7283 “True”
Hi-fi Rush is No More Heroes but your a rockstar instead of a mercenary
I love how the outro matches the rhythm theme of this game. I'm definitely getting Hi-fi Rush after watching this!
Heads up you NEED to be on beat, if you aren’t it just doesn’t *FEEL* right
I first discovered the game via a randomly recommended "all Bosses and Ending" video, what really ended up capturing me in that video was the Korsica boss fight, especially because I play an instrument myself.
Okay, now time for Pizza Tower to get the same treatment!
If Pizza Tower and Hi-Fi Rush aren't contenders for GOTY I'm gonna riot. They both deserve that shot.
"Pizza Tower with a side of salt"
Pizza Tower with a side of shredded cheese
I’ve only seen small clips on RUclips before this, I honestly thought it was some new tv show.
What’s Hi-Fi rush
I don’t recognize this IP
Ah, I am a fool
1:20 my guy
All good
Saw it literally three seconds after I commented, lmao
I knew it!!!“
I definitely enjoyed it and just finished it two days ago on PS5 I just hope the shark skin will be available in the shop.
I kinda hope that even if this doesn't become a series, it becomes a genre, cause that just seems cool
I got this game like a couple hours after they dropped that trailer.
This game is an experience. Seeing it and playing it are on totally different scales.
Pizza tower definitely got overshadowed by this game, another game that was development for 5 years
Love to your artistic style on the thumbnail for this one!
Don't worry about the whole "side of sugar" thing. It was actually really nice to hear you so positive about a game and how much you enjoy it!
A lot of times, yeah, it's fun to hear 'the big streamer' talk negatively about a game you have a lot of grimes with, too. But for good precious type games like this, I love to hear all of the good things you had to say!
0:53 oh uh... yeah... i remember that (sad disheveled frog face)
sadge
The way you describe the game reminds me of Deep Rock Galactic. A masterpiece with only cosmetic DLCs and no paid 'battle pass', only a universal performance pass and masterpieces come by the dozen!
Don't forget DRG's incredible community, Rock and Stone, brother!
the game becomes a rythm hell in higher difficuties.
but most of the time isn't like those Rythm games where you miss a beat no action happens or damage gets low... etc.
the game itself explains every attack its on beat so you never miss a beat and have too many indicators Hearing those HEY! while beating the living shit out of a robot its satisfying.
the elites with the forced Rythm sequence are hell... but they are fun.
Props to the localization team Whoever did the translation and the dubbing (latam spanish) did an extremely good job adapting certain jokes and puns... specially the fired joke.
Cinamon Best robot.
‘Side of Sugar’
Yes please- we want that :00
It be nice to see you review anything you might enjoy or recommend
I mean come on not all games need Salt xD
If I had a nickel for every rhythm-based game that I never heard of till after it came out with a great style and was legitimately fun. I would have two nickels. It's not a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. This and no strait roads are both great. Though there is nsr's issues on the switch but bugs are different story for me.
