I gonna have to watch this movie at some point. I read they kinda went Dragon Ball Z style in that final battle against Bowser and that got my hopes and expectations up.
That was the hypest scene in the entire movie. Bowser is strong, and they show how much power went into that kick by having the force explode out behind the brothers as it cracked the asphalt. And yet the Bros. were unbothered. Absolutely coolest way to show that they were invincible with the Super Star.
The funniest part to me is that the "adults need a pop song" thing is that the people who are most likely to recognize a lot of the Easter eggs and references ARE the parents. People like me who are in their 30's-40's who grew up playing Mario games.
Seeing the brothers hug, and how Mario HELD luigi after, forehead touch and all, I was sobbing in the theatre. Seeing the brothers be so close was amazing, I need more
I teared up personally at the very end, when they were just waking up for the day and getting ready for work and Luigi brings Mario a coffee and just....It was so wholesome and comforting. It's such a small scene but I love it so much.
My boss was awesome enough to put together a private screening at a nearby movie theater for us, so I saw it with my co-workers over the weekend, we all had a great time and even my boss liked it a lot too. My only gripe is that Luigi didn’t get enough screen time, but other than that it was a delight to watch, there were soooo many references and it didn’t go overboard with jokes either, was really entraining from start to finish!
THEY LITERALLY DID IT ALL! THEY HAD HIM SHAKING THE FLASHLIGHT ON AFTER IT WENT OFF! THEY HAD HIM QUIVER HIS VOICE SAYING "M-MAARRIOOO?" THEN THEY HAD HIM RUN INTO AN **OLD.. DECREPIT... MANSION!!!** AND THEY DIDN'T MAKE A SINGLE LUIGI'S MANSION SCENE. THEY DIDN'T SHOW HIM RUNNING FROM BOOS OR ANYTHING. THE ONLY TIME A BOO SHOWED UP WAS KING BOO AT THE *VERY* END! WHEN DOES LUIGI GET TO EXPLORE HIS MANSION!?!
@@LuciusC nah man it's implied she crawled into a tube as a toddler in Mario's real world and just popped out in mushroom kingdom. I mean yeah you gotta assume a lot but it literally shows her crawling out of a tube as a baby
@@komali2 Compared to what? It's not saying much, but it's still technically true, this movie shows more backstory for her than anything else from Nintendo that I've seen.
Idk about that. Personally I think it did just as much as the games via the Yoshi games. Movie: I just showed up here, they raised me and made me their princess. Games: Stork delivery gone wrong but with help of yoshi got delivered safely to the castle. Both Peaches were raised in the kingdom the only difference is one just showed up from a pipe the other came by stork
I didn't realize how desperate I was for anything Galaxy related until I felt myself hinging off of any motif, sound effect, and nod to those mario games. I loved Lumalee and I was ready to cry when I heard gusty garden in the end credits.
I will admit. I teared up when Luigi saved Mario during the Bowser fight and said, "Nothing can hurt us when we're together." I absolutely want more of the brothers. It is pure wholesome.
It was an awesome moment but yeah the way he went from goofball to absolute ultra instant with the star was kind of a short fall. Mario showed athletic prowess in the opening sequence and had a training montage. Luigi just got captured and did jackshitall till the last 5 minutes and was somehow perfectly in sync? The biggest flaw of this movie is it was 30-40 minutes too short.
@@pookie2986 nah Kings we’re important but AGAIN! Too short! There was so much more to unpack. We had this massive hate boner between Donkey and Mario that just doesn’t have enough meat to justify their beef. Peaches introduction and negation was like 40 seconds total and this is a meeting between the rulers of two nations against in invading apocalypse. Even donkey’s inferiority complex is somehow out on blast with no context. It was good enough for kids but Christ they could have made it perfect if it wasn’t so rushed.
The family wasn't voiced by the Super Show cast. Two uncles appeared in the movie. Uncle Arthur's voiced by John DiMaggio who was Jake the Dog in Adventure Time and Bender in Futurama. Uncle Tony's voiced by Rino Romano, who was Batman in The Batman animated series from 2004 (that aired on Kids WB), and the narrator of the Curious George series on PBS Kids. Super Show Luigi was Danny Wells, and Danny Wells passed in 2013. Well before this movie was in development. However, their FATHER was voiced by Charles Martinet, who is the Mario we know and love! And their mother is Jessica DiCicco, who was the first voice of Noggin (yes, Noggin the former channel), and Malina in The Emperor's New School. My first exposure to Princess Peach was through Melee (on someone else's GameCube before I finally got a Wii and my first Mario game which was Super Mario Galaxy), so I had a really hard time understanding why people are upset she's jumping around and kicking ass. And the way she holds her dress when she runs is adorable. The movie is fun. Animation is amazing (especially hair and water, couldn't get enough of those XD). Yes, the movie is aimed at kids, but if you don't overthink it too much as an adult, it's still great. Would recommend watching it at least once.
The moment where after Luigi gets captured by the Shy Guys, he looks down at the Dark Land castle and flashbacks to when he and Mario were *babies* legit got me a little emotional.😢
Me too! He was thinking Mario has always been there to save him… He hoped Mario would save him here too! I loved, loved that they showed Luigi saving Mario at the final battle with the manhole. And then he joked! About being known for being brave! Good stuff, please 5+ more mins of it.
Jack Black singing "Peaches" was legit one of the greatest movie theatre experiences I have ever had, and I don't say that lightly. Those scenes were just godly.
“I feel like the movie could’ve used 30 more minutes” I said this EXACT thing right after I watched it. Just a little bit more time to get to know everyone would’ve pushed the movie into “maybe watchable if you aren’t a Mario fan”. As a Mario fan, however, it was a great time! Musical motifs in particular are my jam, so I was practically panting hearing the different references from throughout the franchise.
luigi being op has a valid through line, since he does all the same things mario does near the end but without having done ANY of the training he did. scott i am so proud of you for being correct as always
That's why their dad (who I do not approve of extisting) is mad at Mario. He knows the sheer power of Luigi and do not condone of Mario holding him back.
I'm so glad to see a video game movie not being afraid that it's a video game movie You can definitely tell Nintendo held a lot of ground, no fart jokes, the Toads weren't Minions, and the use of pop songs weren't as heavily used as the actual Mario music
@@TheBlastMage There is a Lot I would give to see a mansion full of Boos. I was so delighted by King Boo in the wedding! Let's hope with how big of a hit this one was we'll see a lot more coming.
Yeah I loved the brotherly love scenes too, when we get to see brothers be...you know. Brothers. Kamek was probably my favorite character. He had just the right amount of authority and power of an older adviser, but still being scared of Bowser's power. I disagree with the point non-Mario fans wouldn't like this movie because for an overall kids' movie, it's cute! To me, this would be a good starter for anyone who doesn’t play the game, give a backstory, characterizes the characters well. And definitely would make someone want to play the games. Of course, as you brought up, the movie is filled to the brim with references. Even the MAP of Brooklyn and Queens has references! Luck Card Street in Brooklyn refers to the fact Nintendo started by selling cards in 1889...a year that's referenced with 1889th Street in Queens. As for Take On Me being in the movie, the reason they ended up choosing that one for the scene is because that TOO is a reference! The NES launched in the US on October 18, 1985, and Take On Me was the number one single that day!
All of the movie's shortcomings aside, I did enjoy how they tried to give Mario a character arc in this story. He wasn't the bland stoic figure we've been used to seeing in the video games for so long now. He was a small man dealing with self-esteem issues while also being sick of being looked down upon. It's a simple and common trope for sure, but his sole motivation for the entire movie was saving his brother, so he never questioned himself until beaten down to a pulp by a huge freaking fire-breathing turtle. It wasn't violent or anything, but we're so used to see Mario being happy, stoic, and positive that seeing him there covered in bruises and about to give up... it made me feel stuff. They actually made him feel human rather than just a larger-than-life video game mascot. And of course, Luigi's scene right afterwards was just the icing on the cake. The lil' bro always believed in Mario, no matter what. So wholesome.
YES THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS!! People who complained about Mario being a shallow character have clearly never played any Mario games before. Mario had MORE character in this movie than he does in the games and even in the Super Mario Bros Super Show. I literally almost cried when he was sitting in the pizzeria all bruised and beaten down about to give up. Then Luigi comes in and saves him and it's just SO GOOD! Mario and Luigi have more personality displayed in this movie than a lot of other media they're in.
@@Sqwivig Hey, it's no big deal. I'm not trying to invalidate all the criticism other people have, I just think it's important to give credits where credits is due. To me, the Mario movie was a kids movie which I could actually enjoy because it didn't insult my intelligence nor my sense of humor, and was packed with visual and audio references that I could appreciate as a long-time Mario fan. I can definitely understand if people wanted a more complex movie experience out of it and I don't entirely disagree with them, but to me it was still a satisfying watch regardless.
my favoruite element is how they characterise mario as someone who REFUSES to give up, reflecting how a player would be when playing a difficult mario level. And even when he seems reayd to give up in the finale he is reminded of what's at stake and jsut gets back up immediately. It may not be super complex but it was a nice way of translating the games and using them to give mario a personality.
@@sarafontanini7051 They've also set themselves up to re-explore that character trait in the future if it becomes relevant. Mario said it himself, he can be stubborn to a fault. They could use it as a source of conflict in the future. Like Mario wasting time over something meaningless because he felt like his pride was on the line or something like that and didn't want to just give up and move on to something more important. Once again, very simple and common trait. But it's still at least something when compared to the games, and that's another trait a lot of gamers can probably relate to. lol
This movie portrayed the characters in such a comedic lighthearted fashion, it felt like I was re-experiencing Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga. It had a plot, but knew exactly when to crack a few jokes without killing the pacing. It really did feel like the direction of the movie was from someone who genuinely loved the Mario series
@@dip.918 The pacing being breakneck IS the problem, though. it doesn't make it unwatchable, but it doesn't really allow for taking in the scene or any extra fleshing out that the characters could've had. Exactly as Scott said, it's a theme park ride. Still, it did pretty good for the amount of time each scene had and well, "wanting more" is probably the best problem a movie could have.
@@dip.918 Personally I think that it hindered the movie greatly. It could've gone from a good movie to a FANTASIC movie with better pacing. The entire first hour feels shorter than the last 20 minutes and its a little weird to me.
I watched this with my mother, this one of my best theatre experiences since everytime I looked at her I could see so, so happy. She grew up with so much Mario and she was constantly so excited and we both chanted for Luigi to save the day at the end. I don't know much about Mario, but seeing her so happy made me love this movie
My Mother Passed a few weeks ago... well 2 weeks as of Wednesday. Anyway the Mario Movie is the last happy memory I have of her, going to see it together.
I was honestly surprised that toadsworth wasn’t in, but with some deep voiced announcer toad there instead. On top of that (pushed further down for spoilers) . . . when Mario ‘dies,’ toad isn’t shown reacting to that at all. Not a single word about his “best friend” dying. That quick transition was the most unsettling imo.
1:05 the voice actor for Luigi in the Super Show--which i feel morally obligated to correct as the person with Luigi from the super show pfp--is Danny Wells, who unfortunately died in 2013; I'm unsure where you got this information from. Love the videos nonetheless, big fan!
100% believe that enjoyment of this movie is directly connected to how much of a Mario fan you are. I agree with your assessment, it’s poorly paced and basically nursery rhyme/fairy tale levels of plot, but as a love letter to the games and their impact, it’s such an experience worth having. It doesn’t overstay its welcome, the voice direction turned out decently well, and all the set pieces are v pretty. The references are just fantastic all around (Kid Icarus at the beginning and the Gusty Gardens theme at the end were my highlights). I even got a kick out of explaining to my old-school Mario fan sister in law what a Luma is and why its cheerfully nihilistic/fatalistic attitude was surprisingly on brand. 😆
Definitely felt a big budget version of the super show, especially with the use of license music in the film, and in that aspect it was pretty enjoyable for me .
I as well LOVED how close Peach was to the Adventures comics. Ever since reading those, I've been a die hard Peach stan despite her not having as many great moments lately outside of maaaaaybe the end of Odyssey. And, holy shit, Odyssey is 6 years old...
I just gotta say, as a HUGE Mario fan I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the way they portrayed Bowser in this film!! He's my favorite Mario character and I was worried that he was going to be a one note evil turtle monster like he is in the mainline games, and strip him away of all the things that makes Bowser amazing in all the RPG series. I am happy to report that they kept EVERYTHING about Bowser's character from those games! Him being an "incel" isn't out of line for him at all! He's been seen pining after Peach and trying to marry her in MULTIPLE instances. In the first anime Mario Movie, in Super Mario Bros Super Show, in a couple Mario mangas, in Super Paper Mario he LITERALLY MARRIES PEACH, and in Super Mario Odyssey he tries and fails to marry Peach. You could even argue that Super Mario Sunshine could fit into the "trying to marry Peach" category because the entire premise of that game was he convinced his son Peach was his mom. I also love that he is both respected and feared by his troops/minions. Them having a huge rock n roll rager before he gives his speech was just fucking amazing. I love the gag where one Koopa speaks up and asks a very obvious but upsetting question to Bowser and just gets blasted in the face with a fireball and turns into a Dry Bones 😂. We saw a lot of those kinds of interactions in Mario and Luigi Boswer's Inside Story and that's one of my favorite games of all time. Good to see those kinds of gags live on! I also love how they kept his relationship to Kamek similar to his relationship to Kammy Koopa in Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door. He's all old and wrinkly like she is and follows Bowser as an advisor and second in command, but he's also the same Kamek that gives Yoshi and his friends trouble, and the same Kamek that dresses up as Peach at the end of New Super Mario Bros Wii. I also love how Bowser is pretty goofy. Him playing the piano and singing about Peach is a peak Bowser moment 👌. It fits right in line with him being a comedic villain. Bowser is seriously THE funniest Mario character in existence and I'm SO GLAD they embraced that in the movie! I also like how they weren't afraid to make Bowser insecure. He's been shown in a lot of games to struggle with his emotions and communication skills. He's short tempered and takes things too literally sometimes. In short, Bowser struggles with toxic masculinity. He feels like the only way to effectively solve problems is to be angry and aggressive, and it leads to situations that isolates him from others. The guy just wants friends and a wife to help him take care of his kids. But he's so wrapped up in being the bad guy and enjoys just taking what he wants that he's stuck between a rock and a hard place. Does he continue to be the bad guy and dominate everything/everyone at the cost of real friendship? Or does he let his guard down, stop being the villain and relinquish power for a chance at real companionship? To Bowser, not being the villain would be showing weakness. So he continues to be the villain despite knowing it will further isolate him. Bowser is actually kind of a complex character for the Mario series when you take into account all his diologue from all the RPG games he's been in. Some people will argue that Bowser is nothing more than a raging turtle monster, but the Mario Movie JUST PROVED THEM WRONG!!
Me and my brother dressed up as mario and luigi. It's funny because I'm the older brother, I'm shorter than him, and he's taller, younger than me, and his favorite color is green
Glad you saw it in 3D. I found the application of the 3D to be tasteful, and didn't stand out in a "Oh hey look! We're doing 3D stuff" sort of way. Loved the movie, and I found that listening to the soundtrack on its own makes little easter eggs more readily known, such as one song using the P-Switch music from SMB3.
My theory about the licensed music is that they were trying to set it in the 80’s/early 90’s (I.E. kid Icarus, NES, and punch out being the Easter eggs) so they just picked 80’s/early 90’s pop songs
I think it's a good family movie because it's just fun for that audience, but so much more if you're a Mario (and Nintendo) fan like me, I absolutely loved it despite its issues, in fact my only personal gripe is that it's short, wanted to see even more of it (and if it were slightly longer they could've added more character interactions to make it better in general)! By the way, nice that you mentioned the Super Mario Adventures comics, I'd be quite surprised if they didn't take any inspiration from them considering Peach's portrayal, Bowser wanting to marry her and singing, the babies scene (although in that it was Mario & Wario) etc.!
This is my first vid of yours. After hearing about your back (ouch!), your awesome animation & pacing/structure, and then hearing this dude I don’t know going “I WANNA HEAR YABLABLABLAH AGAIN” about a Toad I didn’t know was dead… Subscribed! New subscriber, thanks a bunch haha
The song "Peaches" sung by JablinskiGames alone makes this a 10/10. Also, the entire theater clapped their hands after the movie was over. Best theater experience ever.
I saw it opening night with my nerd friends and had a great time! My theater had a mix of families and adult fans, one guy was wearing a mario outfit. I agree the pacing is fast but it was a fun ride, I think that nails it on the head.
Are you on about when Mario and Luigi fight Bowser? Because, I don't know if there's any "Bros." fight moves there, but there's the infamous tailspin attack from Super Mario 64 that they use to defeat him, which, imo, is even cooler than any move in Smash Bros. There are definitely some in the fight with Mario vs DK though, so I've been told.
This movie was amazing. Both my parents when I saw it with each of them, thought it was great. My mom especially. She thought it was going to be stupid but she had a good time.
as someone also from michigan, me and my sister seemed to be the only ones in the theater being hyped up, we were silently screaming at the AMAZING MUSIC and references
This movie really made me want Luigi's Mansion to be made. Charlie Day really knocked it out of the park as Luigi and I agree that the green boi should have had more screen time
“Super Mario Bros. Movie 2: You Can Now Play As Luigi” where it’s almost exactly the same movie but they have Luigi save himself from Bowser. (Multiple Luigis like in Super Mario Galaxy)
I went to see this with my mom and while we hated the pacing we absolutely loved pointing out all the motifs, and easter eggs. I can also confirm that my mom is not a Sonic fan and absolutely adored the Sonic movies.
They did Luigi’s screen time dirty with this movie but also managed to do something I once thought impossible. *Make me like Peach.* That little blue Luma was the best character though LMAO.
This proves to be that you have an amazing sense of humor because you made me laugh so many times throughout this video and my daughter is excited to watch the movie with me
I definitely hope they can slow down the pacing in the sequel because the character moments in this movie were so good, but just felt like very fleeting. I'd love to see Mario and Luigi team up more in the next film because their brotherly love was so endearing.
5:30 i saw the movie with my friends yesterday and i think the funniest thing about kamek is that when bowser asked him if his looks were fine, kamek _licked his lips_ (they PHYSICALLY ANIMATED HIM LICKING HIS LIPS) before saying how good bowser looked. that paired with the whole "bowser practicing proposing to peach on kamek" scene made me turn to my friends and go "...he has a crush on bowser, right?" and everyone wholeheartedly agreeing
I would have liked to see Luigi go through the spooky mansion/castle & maybe deal with King Boo before getting handed over to Bowser, set up a Luigi's Mansion subplot that could be fleshed out in a sequel or something.
I like your review! A lot of folks forget that we put zero money towards these movies until AFTER they are finished and then people just complain that they did it wrong instead of looking for the good parts. Its a really weird system and i appreciate that you tried to alleviate that!
I watched it with my parents (who AT MOST know the NES Super Mario Bros.) and they still enjoyed it. I think there's enough deep cut references and basic "everyone will know this" references for everyone to enjoy, even if they aren't a Mario FAN per se.
But like who hasn't seen Mario, literally no one doesn't know Mario. The references make it special for people in the know, but if you legitimately don't know Mario at all, it's really fun. WHAT I NEED IS A LUIGI'S MANSION SEQUAL GIVE IT TO ME NOW!!
I read the Super Mario Adventures book before seeing the movie cause why not and apparently “mushroom kingdom here we come” is ripped straight from the book
We took our Mario obsessed 4 year old to the drive in to see it, and we had a great time. It wasn't a cinematic masterpiece, but it was an entertaining movie.
I took my daughters to see it. We thoroughly enjoyed it as they played the older mario games and as a person who grew up with it....the easter eggs were so much fun to pick out. I really really loved Jack Black as Bowser and Chris Pratt wasn't bad. He wasn't great either but eh. He did better than I expected him to.
Cool thing about the floating bricks: The filmmakers actually came up with an in-universe explication if they ever wanted to expand! It’s a mineral native to the mushroom-world called “Floatanium”, which they use in their various floating blocks and contraptions.
Definitely one of the best video game movie for the fan, it got all the reference spot on Also how dare you remind me of the atrocities that is the monster hunter movie
Scott took ALL the words out of my mouth. Especially the Lack of Luigi. Honestly, I would have changed some things around if I was in charge, so that a somewhat better order of events happens: Bowser capture Peach because Mario and Luigi (not separated in beginning) accidentally let him (because they just arrived and while Bowser flies back to World 8 (replace his flying castle with his Airships), Toad (being Captain of Exploration and the Guard) trains them both for their journey to Kong Kingdom, while Peach escapes from her cell, manages to make it almost out of World 8, but she gets caught off guard by some of Bowser’s minions and recaptured. It may not help with the pacing, but I stayed close to the source material and gave Luigi, Peach, and Toad more things to do.
I would’ve made Bowser less kooky, Peach more feminine, kong civilization less grand, and no Mario kart. Also, Captain Toad could’ve done more if he were going to follow the cast the entire time. And of COURSE more Luigi.
1:10 Just a quick correction here, it wasn’t Luigi’s Super Show VA. Danny Wells, the actor for both the live action Luigi and cartoon Luigi, has been dead since 2013. Tony Rosato, Luigi’s VA from Adventures of Mario 3 through Super Mario World, also well known for being the original voice actor for Nemesis in Resident Evil 3, is also deceased.
i actually took my little sister to the movie when i first saw it, she doesnt play video games as much as i do... or at all these days, but she loves playing mario kart with me, so when we saw the mario kart segment of the movie she was geeking out, especially when... certain items... made an appearance. if they dont make a luigis mansion movie i will honestly... be very disapointed, the dark lands were barely addressed and it had so much potential for luigis mansion as a movie
Took my preschooler to it since she’s really into the games right now. She wanted to go for the Luigi kidnapped part cause it was scary. But she toughed it out and really liked the movie
One think I liked that I didn't think about until after the movie was over was how they made Peach a strong character without doing the whole "we underestimated her because she was a girl but now that we see she's a baddass we've learned our lesson." Whenever Peach does something awesome, no one is surprised. They react exactly the same as if a male character did it and for my money that is exactly how you should write a female character.
I wish they would've kept her voice sounding like Peach though. Peach has a naturally higher voice than what they gave her in the movie, so it feels a little less "girls can do stuff too" and more like "TOUGH-sounding girls can do this stuff", which... wasn't really a change I enjoyed as someone with a higher voice lol. The voice actress sounded like she would've been a better fit for Rosalina honestly, I would've been happy with that because I love Rosalina very much.
Glad to see someone else who said Kamek was their favorite character! The way he's animated just oozes enthusiasm, no matter what he's doing! Still would've liked to see him interact with characters other than Bowser though (personally part of me was hoping he and Cranky would get into a "back in my day" competition before they both try to fight it out...only for Cranky to remember "oh wait shit he knows magic, this was a bad idea")
Can confirm. Here in LA there was an ARMY of kids in mario and Luigi costumes. Folks went all out, even 2 weeks after the premiere, many go to see the film in costume.
I saw it in theaters with my three year old nephew the audience got the references. Like when Luigi's phone rang with the GameCube jingle everyone laughed, but my nephew then loudly asked why everyone is laughing?
4:35 they totally got fired, nah but for real I think the trailer's voice was kind of annoying or just off when the voice in the movie was fitting for how they wanted to portray him. (That being a semi-gloomy but still ready for adventure, plummer )
Dude I think you literally released this video AS I was watching the movie in the theater. Wild. You're 100% right about the reviews. I know of Mario and thought it was a pretty ok movie, and had a lot of fun when I recognized a reference.
I was probably the loudest nerd in the theatre when I cheered for best boy, favorite green hat wearing, adorably wimpy Luigi when he FINALLY got his shine in the end. They better have more of him in the second movie. I also was loving each and every Bowser scene. Especially when he was asking fake Peach if she would marry him. God he looked absolutely adorable. That piano song…just amazing.
Omg YES! I seriously don't know why they didn't give us toadsworth. That blue Toad on the council even had the deeper/older voice that would have fit him perfectly.
As an 80s baby, I was taken on a nostalgia filled sugar rush. Hearing the original live action Luigi as their uncle was dope. Seeing Spyke from Wrecking Crew. Punch Out Pizzeria with the Jump Man arcade game. Mario playing Kid Icarus. Hear old music. It all sparked joy. As soon as they mentioned meeting the Kong king, I instantly thought "Please don't be Cranky... It's going to be Cranky..." My young daughter, the franchise's current target, was riding a "recent relevancy" high. She lost it seeing stuff the giant moray, the catsuit, the funny little sound Shy Guys make. The instant she saw the Paratroopa captain she was like "That guy's gonna blow someone up!" And when it happened she squealed the squeal of pure childhood bliss. On contact, she and every other kid in the theater all yelled "Blue shell!" in unison.
I'm very glad everyone else is equally as pissed Luigi does not get the screentime he deserves. Also all of the easter eggs.. . so fun. I love the Punch Out cafe and the 8-bit Antiques store the most though I think. Also the soundtrack is incredible they really went absolutely baller with it
Real quick, because I'm a Super Mario Bros Super Show fanatic, the voice actor for Luigi in the Super Show was Danny Wells, who passed away in 2013. Both uncles in the movie were voiced by John DiMaggio (Uncle Arthur) and Rino Romano (Uncle Tony) respectively, neither of those voice actors appeared on the Super Mario Bros Super Show. Charles Martinet voiced the Dad (fitting) and Jessica DiCicco voiced the Mom, neither of which were voiced by voice actors from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. This absolutely does not matter in the grand scheme of things, but I just wanted to clarify on the very off chance someone gets confused. Would've loved if that was the case though, from what I know, Peach's old voice actor is still alive, and having her come back to reprise Mario's mom in the movie would've been amazing (or if she was actually the woman in the commercial).
That scene where Bowser kicks Mario and Luigi while they're invincible and they don't even flinch goes so hard I can't put it into words.

Fun fact: there was a Sonic Forces reference in that scene, when mario and luigi dash into the enemies.

@@johnermactavish1162 I think they should have cut the Kongs for maybe a sequel, but yeah Luigi needed some more screen time.
@@pookie2986 nah Kings we’re important but AGAIN! Too short! There was so much more to unpack.

Luigi getting shafted is entirely in character for him, though.
@@jimmygarza8896 Hahaha omfg BURN! 🤣🔥 I love Luigi but it's so true. He gets sidelined a LOT
Yeah. All the characters were simple like how they are in the games, but felt like actual people.
my favoruite element is how they characterise mario as someone who REFUSES to give up, reflecting how a player would be when playing a difficult mario level.
But it's still at least something when compared to the games, and that's another trait a lot of gamers can probably relate to. lol
I’m happy you mentioned Toadsworth, it put a smile on my face
I was confused why they didn’t have him in the movie
This is very unlikely, but the toad that fills his role could age and become the Toadsworth we all wanted.
I mean the pacing was bad anyways but I see your point
@@absolutezerochill2700 The pace being breakneck doesn't necessarily make it bad, especially with the kind of movie this is
@@dip.918 The pacing being breakneck IS the problem, though. it doesn't make it unwatchable, but it doesn't really allow for taking in the scene or any extra fleshing out that the characters could've had. Exactly as Scott said, it's a theme park ride.
Still, it did pretty good for the amount of time each scene had and well, "wanting more" is probably the best problem a movie could have.

And, holy shit, Odyssey is 6 years old...
tbh i think it's ok for a movie to just be a simple and fun adventure in a case like this
I just gotta say, as a HUGE Mario fan I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the way they portrayed Bowser in this film!!
I love the Bowz, too!
I went dressed as Wario, with all my buds dressed up as different Mario characters. Best way to see the film, tbh.
I tried to get my friends to do that, but the others couldn't get their costumes in time.
Me and my brother dressed up as mario and luigi. It's funny because I'm the older brother, I'm shorter than him, and he's taller, younger than me, and his favorite color is green
I went as Luigi!
(Well actually, I wore a Luigi hat and a Bowser shirt, but I was prepped!)
My sister donned her plush Mario hat, and I wore a bright green turtleneck and a pair of overalls. Got a little warm, but it was worth it.
I went dressed as Jump Man. Which was a coincidence since Jump man aka MARIOs actual voice actor made a cameo AS Jump man :D which was amazing

The sheer number of references I recognized made me smile through pretty much the whole movie.

Are you on about when Mario and Luigi fight Bowser? Because, I don't know if there's any "Bros." fight moves there, but there's the infamous tailspin attack from Super Mario 64 that they use to defeat him, which, imo, is even cooler than any move in Smash Bros.

as someone also from michigan, me and my sister seemed to be the only ones in the theater being hyped up, we were silently screaming at the AMAZING MUSIC and references
Apparently "Take on Me" was the number one hit song when the first Super Mario Bros came out, which might be why they put it in the movie.
This movie really made me want Luigi's Mansion to be made. Charlie Day really knocked it out of the park as Luigi and I agree that the green boi should have had more screen time

I saw the movie, and you were right. Most of the audience were young kids who only played odyssey, and they never got the well made references.
I'm sure that by the time the sequel comes around, it'll be able to flesh out the lore of the Mario Universe more
I would have liked to see Luigi go through the spooky mansion/castle & maybe deal with King Boo before getting handed over to Bowser, set up a Luigi's Mansion subplot that could be fleshed out in a sequel or something.

I mean... I pointed to everything I knew and my friends (who come but didn't play mario games) were like 😑
I can confirm that in LA whenever a reference happened everyone popped off
Scott took ALL the words out of my mouth. Especially the Lack of Luigi. Honestly, I would have changed some things around if I was in charge, so that a somewhat better order of events happens:
Bowser capture Peach because Mario and Luigi (not separated in beginning) accidentally let him (because they just arrived and while Bowser flies back to World 8 (replace his flying castle with his Airships), Toad (being Captain of Exploration and the Guard) trains them both for their journey to Kong Kingdom, while Peach escapes from her cell, manages to make it almost out of World 8, but she gets caught off guard by some of Bowser’s minions and recaptured.
I literally sat in the back of the theater so I could mumble to myself every reference I saw or heard which was a smart decision
3:00 that IS actually just a theory now, a FIIIIILM THEORY.
Nice jab at MatPat though!😂
But that's just a theory... A MARIO MOVIE THEORY.
1st... Hell Yeah.
2nd Peaches, Peaches, Peaches!!!
i actually took my little sister to the movie when i first saw it, she doesnt play video games as much as i do... or at all these days, but she loves playing mario kart with me, so when we saw the mario kart segment of the movie she was geeking out, especially when... certain items... made an appearance.
if they dont make a luigis mansion movie i will honestly... be very disapointed, the dark lands were barely addressed and it had so much potential for luigis mansion as a movie
8:11 *yes* and I want E.gadd in the next movie for the exact same reason
Took my preschooler to it since she’s really into the games right now. She wanted to go for the Luigi kidnapped part cause it was scary. But she toughed it out and really liked the movie
To be fair to your kid, that part with the dry bones was actually decently terrifying, and I'm 24. Proud of your kid for sticking through it!
The voice actress sounded like she would've been a better fit for Rosalina honestly, I would've been happy with that because I love Rosalina very much.
and that is how you write a strong female character
I love how “but that’s just a theory” is apart of the internets culture now. Thank you MatPat
I couldn’t wait to see your opinion on the movie and it was worth the wait
I saw it in theaters with my three year old nephew the audience got the references. Like when Luigi's phone rang with the GameCube jingle everyone laughed, but my nephew then loudly asked why everyone is laughing?
4:35 they totally got fired,
nah but for real I think the trailer's voice was kind of annoying or just off when the voice in the movie was fitting for how they wanted to portray him.
One of my favorite little references was the shop in Brooklyn labelled Disc-Kun with the FDS mascot
Omg YES! I seriously don't know why they didn't give us toadsworth. That blue Toad on the council even had the deeper/older voice that would have fit him perfectly.
Yes! I was thinking the same thing!
It's going to be Cranky..."
My young daughter, the franchise's current target, was riding a "recent relevancy" high.
