Another (probably not so fun) fact: Chai at the beginning is shown to wear a sling on his arm, implying that he had a accident. John Johanas- the creator had confirmed that he never had a full function of his arm to begin with, which means Chai is disabled from the start. It is the reason why he never knows how to play the guitar, he just physically cannot without his robot arm. You can see that he is trying to learn when you notice that there's a musical sheet book in the game menu right beside the couch he usually lies down.
Imagine a scene where he clarifies that right after she brings it up again - she's stunned - everyones kinda just like "kinda a messed up thing to say, Peppermint..."
I was wondering if that was the case, and I actually love that. It gives a different and painful meaning to Kale saying he’s nothing without the arm affecting him so much. That is the sort of insecurity someone might have if they went from being disabled to basically having superpowers in only a couple hours. Disability aids can cause a very unique and strange kind of imposter syndrome like that. OH that also adds new meaning to the “defect” thing! I can’t believe I didn’t notice that sooner!
Another fun fact: Smidge is voiced by John Johanas, the game’s director. So he basically self inserted himself into the game to teach the player how to play
The Xenogears reference is also to cut content. In that game, major events were cut and replaced by scrolling text because the team didn’t have enough time or money to fit them in.
Almost everyone seems to focus more on the JoJo references that Zanzo makes, but not the one SotN reference he makes before he releases the first Z-shield bot. Since it gets overshadowed by all the JoJo references, he says "But enough talk, have at you!" before leaving the room referencing to the last line Dracula says before fighting Richter at the start of SotN.
One other fun thing. IF you bought the deluxe upgrade for the extra cosmetics you get a guitar called the 808 Custom. They did a little extra thing with it that they didn't NEED to do. Normally, 808's light changes depending on which summon you have selected. When using the Custom guitar, whenever a cutscene has the guitar become real the lights on the guitar ALSO change to reflect which summon you have ready even though you can't summon people in cutscenes. I love that they decided to do that even though there was no need to. EDIT: @DPadGamer, thanks for the heart!

Speaking of Edgar Wright being an influence on Hi-Fi Rush since the beginning of development. Another Reference can be found in the description of this game in stores (or at least in the description on Steam), as there are multiple titles for each section of the description, one of them reading "Chai Versus the World", clearly a reference to "Scott Pilgrim vs the World"
I think it's obvious but the Sebastian and Joseph robot dialogues are references to events that happen in the Evil Within games. The games are about exploring nightmarish simulations in an attempt to escape.
A thing what is really cool about the SEB-AAA, in the french version of the game he has actually the same voice actor of sebastian castellanos in french his name is Rémi Bichet and it was so much fun when i realize he took back his role
The same in the Latin American dub. Sebastian Castellanos was first voiced by Oscar Flores as TEW dub was recorded in Mexico. Not only was my surprise that Oscar Flores came back as SEB-AAA, he came back as the only Mexican from the cast as the Hi-Fi Rush dub was recorded in Argentina.
As someone who has two Twin Peaks tattoos, seeing you struggle to piece together what Twin Peaks is made me laugh, because even I, who binges the series on a regular basis, don't know what its about.
Chai actually has some attacks that are very similar to Nero's attacks from Devil May Cry 4 and 5. The magnetic pull, for example, is a big part of Nero's Gameplay, in 4 as the Devil Bringer's Snatch, and in 5 as the Devil Breaker's winch, with Buster Arm and Rawhide having an empowered version. The main difference is that Nero pulls smaller enemies to himself, and pulling himself towards larger enemies. Guitar Ride is pretty much Punch Line's Jet Gadget ability. Mix that with the Cybernetic Right Arm, and if I say that the white hair costume option for Chai may very well be a nod to Nero is not as far fetched. Also, Style Rankings.
I don't know if anyone pointed this put, but when you pointed out Roquefort's name meaning @2:42 I thought of something. Since his name comes from a "sheep" milk cheese, it could be a clever way of referencing his fight/personality cause "a wolf in sheep's clothing" due to....obvious reasons.
Ok Roquefort being name after a sheep milk cheese is funny considering his (spoiler for those who haven’t played the game but if you haven’t you should) transformation modification being a wolf, and how he dressed to look not that intimidating I guess you could say he’s now considered a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Fun facts about the European Spanish voice acting in the game! Chai is voiced by the voice actor for Tom Holland (Why is my spider sense tingling?) Macaron is voiced by the same actor as Miguel from the Tekken series. Kale is voiced by the VA of Guybrush Threepwood from the Monkey Island series. (And also voices Seb-AAA) Zanzo has the voice of Rocket Raccoon in the MCU. Roquefort got the same voice as Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons and Frasier (Yep, they got Kelsey Grammer's voice for a werewolf) You can also find the voices of Spongebob and Kratos from God of War among others on the NPCs. (Seriously, they went big on this game)
The SEB-AAA performance also gives a solid argument for having Roger Craig Smith voice an expanded Metal Sonic role in a potential Sonic Heroes remake. (In the original game, Metal Sonic was just a robotically modified version of Ryan Drummond's Sonic voice, so it's very possible a remake would have Roger Craig Smith's voice modified in a similar way to what we hear with SEB-AAA.)
It's not just a huge reference, it's a straight up homage. She's set up just like Pudding during your rival battles with her entourage and doing nearly the same animations, with identical patterns and timings to various SC5 stages. I was waiting for a variation on Up Down Up Down Chu Chu Chu! The music in the prior stage also sounds like a style pastiche of the kind of tracks you'd head in SC5 placed into a blender with Persona 5.
Makes so much sense that the cinematografy is bassed of Edgar Wright's a little bit. In the last track Chai says to Kale the they have beef with him, just like Scott says it to Gideon
I feel like Tango-chan is a reference to Adventure Time, which was well known for having a snail pop up in pretty much every single episode of the show as a little cameo
Really glad you brought up NSR.. It's such a great game, but heavily underrated, and It doesnt get talked about enough, or gets the recognition it deserves.
Zanzo also makes a reference to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in his “enough talk, have at you!” Line before you fight the unkillable z shielding robot thing
In tracks 3 and i think 4 the scientist robots sometimes are typing on keyboards, looking closely at the keyboards they arent the standard qwerty design but instead was japanese. I dont remember specifically what it translated to but it was something like "Im hungry, eat eat eat, tip pet the cat". I know ive seen the snail in some level past track 8 with a broken mirror but i cant remember where.
The alien DNA in the eye is referring to Prey, another Bethesda game. In fact all of the logs in that room refer to other Bethesda games. Fallout and Evil within are the others off the top of my head. They're presented in such a clever way poking fun at the somewhat silly premise of the games.
I really like how much love and effort was put into this game. I hope to play it someday soon. Also, great video! Now I'm gonna make myself some coffee 😂
A couple other things... - During the Twin Peaks scene, the music playing sounds exactly like the series' music composer Angelo Badalamenti. (RIP) - FLCL being a massive reference in the whole game, the less known, similar (& awesome!) anime movie "Dead Leaves" is also inspiration. - Kale's character is much inspired by Trevor Goodchild; the main villain of Perter Chung's 90's animated series "Aeon Flux." Visually & even personality traits. Stuff i noticed..all imo..
You could also say that Chai is a wannabe rockerboy with a mechanical arm in a futuristic setting... Only his arm is on the other side, he doesn't actually play guitar AND is actually likeable. Also in the RnD section there's a programmer on his once a month break talking about how Zanzo only wants you to drink HIS beverages...
There's a reference in the special attacks you can unlock. The skill is called Rip and Tear and in its description it says that chai is channelling a beast, some sort of "evil within". I believe its a double / tripple reference. The evil within is a nod to not just Tango's previous works The Evil Within. The reference might also be a referencing a cheeky joke they did in TEW2 where characters in dialogue name drop the game's name and then look at the player camera. Rip and Tear is most likely a reference to the latest DOOM games since that franchise is under the Bethesda Umbrella as well.
That might have been the reference in mind, but "Thats good / that's bad" is an old bit, a quick search shows it was the focus of an archie cambell standup bit from 1960.
I'm not into rhythm or fighting games, but this game is so chock-full packed with details and funny bits, it was such a delight to watch a stream of it. You really can feel the developers put so much love into this game. Other bits you didn't mention: If you exit a level, you first return to the hide-out and the side characters usually have some kind of tongue-in-cheek meta-commentary about how they're confused to meet Chai back in the hide-out so soon. After Tango-chan gets sucked into the mirror, there will be a midding poster of Tango-chan in a later level. Then in an even later level, you can find Tango-chan bandaged with a gun in front of a broken mirror, implying it was kidnapped by the mirror but made it back out after some fight. So the little snail basically has a mini side-story :)
Here's one I think you missed: In the cutscene at the end of Track 6, Chai arrives at the platform face-down with his ass in the air, just like Johnny from Metal Gear Solid always ends up when he gets knocked out.
track 3 is the volcano if i remember correctly, i saw the snail there!! it's on a ledge nearby the robot complaining about the heat and near the generator
Though i haven't played the game yet and just saw the gameplay for it, i new there was a bit of viewtiful joe and jet set radio in the game. Cool to see the mutual respect that the creators of NSR and this game have for each other. I really do hope to see more from both games if their respective studios do decide to expand there worlds a bit more
Actually, all the logs about scrapped projects behind the SPECTRA doors are referencing other games published by Bethesda. Aside from the one shown which references Prey (2017), there are also ones that reference The Evil Within or Deathloop.
i think more of the emails in the spectra room are easter eggs? the one about using time manipulation to host a free for all with no repercussions is probably a reference to deathloop? and the premise about a serial killer's brain controlling a virtual world sounds familiar but i can't place it
Something interesting I found related to the whole food and drink naming scheme. The name on the strap that Chai wears on his belt loop, as well as one of Chai’s special moves, is Hibiki. This is most likely a reference to a Japanese blended whisky company by the same name.
hey one thing you forgot in the later levels, I think 5th, there is an 'art' of a tall robot eating a small robot. This is in reference to Chrono eating his child of Greek Mythology
After beating Mimosa, as Kale enters the stage, he turns to one of the bots and says "Shut the campus down." The bot replies with "Which sections sir?" to which Kale turns around and bellows out "ALL OF THEM!" This is a reference to Leon the Professional, where Stansfield turns to one of his goons and screams "Everyone!" after telling him to send everyone on the police force to go after Leon. The shot is exactly like the movie.
I got a reference. Rekka boss fight arena resembles an Ring. There are three pipes are each side of the room. And while we are at it, Rekka throwing her glove at Chai is a sign of her “challenging” Chai to a duel. It’s just looks funny. Bc he gets slapped hard I also get an Egg. So apparently during the Cutscene staring Korsicas fight, there is a scene where Macaron, Pep and CNMN circles them from the wall angle. What’s cool is, if you look carefully to the side, you can SEE how many Graffiti you’ve collected through the game. And it shows no matter how many. One. A few, many, all of them. In the order you get them anyway. A nice detail that I appreciate
in Track 3, Tango-chan is on a cliff on the left side of the rock platform with a generator and a pair of robots, one of which complains about the heat. there are heaps of gears on the industrial "cliffs" but adjacent to the lower one is a smaller rock cliff, where Tango is standing, looking down and occasionally throwing a small stone or a ball.
Mimosa is also a salad dish from USSR, made from fish, boiled eggs, grated cheese, onions and mayonnaise. It's named after the wattle flower, which is also spelled Mimosa in Slavic languages.
I totally missed that Xenogears reference, which cooincidentally is also one of my all-time favorirte games. And the alien reference at 10:41 is definitely a reference to Prey (2017).
I think the Easter egg referencing injecting alien DNA into one's eye for super powers might actually be a reference to the survival horror game Prey. Particularly the neural mods what are in fact things that contain alien DNA and are injected into the body through the eye.
10:55 this might be a reference to "Prey" where the main character would inject some needle like objects into his eye and get the option to gain the powers of certain aliens that he's faced in the game.
The whole scene where the cast snap their fingers together made me think that it was a reference to West Side Story, referencing a similar scene where the gang members approach forwards snapping.
Track three has a snail as well. After hitting the generator that activates the pods that allow you to grapple. Jump right over the generator and the snail is near the edge next to some scrap.
The eye one could be about Final Fantasy 7, where the characters have a glow in their eyes exposed to mako. They have Jenova cells which enhanced the soldier, with Jenova technically Alien. So maybe thats what that reference is.
Another fun fact is that during the mimosa boss fight when Chai makes an appearance on stage he hits the same pose as Michael Jackson does during his superbowl halftime performance
10:40 While it may just be a coincidence I think this is a reference to PREY, a game where humans take alien DNA and change it where it gives us humans superpower with items called neuromods. Oh yeah, and you inject neuromods through your eye.
If I had a nickle for every cat that can talk and is a friend of the protagonist, I would have two nickles. Which isn't alot but its weird it happend twice.

That explains a lot - particularly why he signed up for this program in the first place…
Kinda fucked up that peppermint calls him out on it then, though I guess she wouldn’t have known at that point
I thought the "so you finally are gonna learn guitar" line at the end of the game was funny, but knowing that it's more heartwarming than funny
Imagine a scene where he clarifies that right after she brings it up again - she's stunned - everyones kinda just like "kinda a messed up thing to say, Peppermint..."
I was wondering if that was the case, and I actually love that. It gives a different and painful meaning to Kale saying he’s nothing without the arm affecting him so much. is he also madly in love with chai in real life
Well as the creator of chai, he *does* know him on a disturbingly personal level.
😂

I squee'd when he said that! I adore SOTN and having that easter egg pop up was fantastic!
@@anonbeetl ohhhh nice thanks for sharing that i didnt know ^^
Kale is also voiced by Roger Craig Smith
I find it amusing that the guy who voices Sonic the Hedgehog also voices quite possibly the laziest guy in the game
That snail run animation in chapter 7 reminds me of the snail desperately trying not to be late for class at the start of Monster University.
Great to see all the love this game gets. Sweet video bro.
Thanks :D
Also, Style Rankings.
well it seems like it was ripped. Ranking System was not only in dmc but in a lot of other games, even before dmc.
@@MJ0101_ yeah but dmc started the character action genre, which Hi-Fi Rush is a part of
I don't know if anyone pointed this put, but when you pointed out Roquefort's name meaning @2:42 I thought of something.
Chai is voiced by the voice actor for Tom Holland (Why is my spider sense tingling?)
Macaron is voiced by the same actor as Miguel from the Tekken series.
Kale is voiced by the VA of Guybrush Threepwood from the Monkey Island series. (And also voices Seb-AAA)
Zanzo has the voice of Rocket Raccoon in the MCU.
Roquefort got the same voice as Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons and Frasier (Yep, they got Kelsey Grammer's voice for a werewolf)
You can also find the voices of Spongebob and Kratos from God of War among others on the NPCs.
(Seriously, they went big on this game)
I always love how SEB-AAA talks in full Noir mode.
Also, the rhythm game section in Mimosa’s fight is a huge reference to Space Channel 5 and Gitaroo Man.
Another little thing about Zanzo and JoJo, his English VA also voice's the user of Bohemian Rhapsody in JoJo
DUDE THANK YOU FOR POINTING THAT FLCL BIT OUT!! I always thought the scene was vaguely familiar.
Me enjoying HiFi Rush in the morning with my masala chai is the best feeling ever!
9:11 this could have been the PERFECT opportunity to add diferent endings, making it also a reference to Yoko Taro games DAMMIT
Zanzo also makes a reference to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in his “enough talk, have at you!” Line before you fight the unkillable z shielding robot thing
I feel bad for what happened to the Devs of this game cause they did a great job with this game
In tracks 3 and i think 4 the scientist robots sometimes are typing on keyboards, looking closely at the keyboards they arent the standard qwerty design but instead was japanese.
I dont remember specifically what it translated to but it was something like
"Im hungry, eat eat eat, tip pet the cat".
I know ive seen the snail in some level past track 8 with a broken mirror but i cant remember where.
Oh and i remembered you can find the snail during the breef moment you play as cnmn
I'm pretty sure the snail is present in every level.
The alien DNA in the eye is referring to Prey, another Bethesda game. In fact all of the logs in that room refer to other Bethesda games. Fallout and Evil within are the others off the top of my head. They're presented in such a clever way poking fun at the somewhat silly premise of the games.
I thought the "alien DNA in the eye" part was a reference to Prey 2017?
I really like how much love and effort was put into this game. I hope to play it someday soon. Also, great video! Now I'm gonna make myself some coffee 😂
A couple other things...
- During the Twin Peaks scene, the music playing sounds exactly like the series' music composer Angelo Badalamenti. (RIP)
- FLCL being a massive reference in the whole game, the less known, similar (& awesome!) anime movie "Dead Leaves" is also inspiration.
Can anyone confirm if the "That's good/that's bad" dialogue and Chai's note are Simpsons references?
I don't know if it's a reference/easter egg but 808's collar looks a lot like Metallica's logo
It comes from the Kanji 響 "Hibi(ki)" that means "resound" or "resonate". Very fitting.
@@yuichikita6018 which Chai also has "Hibiki" strap (?) in English hung in his side hip and a special attack which is called Hibiki as well
Here's one I think you missed: In the cutscene at the end of Track 6, Chai arrives at the platform face-down with his ass in the air, just like Johnny from Metal Gear Solid always ends up when he gets knocked out.
track 3 is the volcano if i remember correctly, i saw the snail there!! it's on a ledge nearby the robot complaining about the heat and near the generator
yup, and the poor dude is sweating cause all the heat
My favorite reference in the game to movie "Leon", when Kayle screaming ALL OF THEM! just like Gary Oldman screamed EVERYONE!
Fun Fact: did you know Chai and Peppermint tea blend together nicely I hear.
I'm pretty sure peppermint prefers to pair with corsica ya know?
@@DPadGamer I was referring to the actual tea.
i always thought he guitar being a weapon was a flcl reference so i feel more justified in that now
i think more of the emails in the spectra room are easter eggs? the one about using time manipulation to host a free for all with no repercussions is probably a reference to deathloop? and the premise about a serial killer's brain controlling a virtual world sounds familiar but i can't place it
Something interesting I found related to the whole food and drink naming scheme.
The name on the strap that Chai wears on his belt loop, as well as one of Chai’s special moves, is Hibiki.
This is most likely a reference to a Japanese blended whisky company by the same name.
IIRC hibiki was the codename/placeholder name of the game before it was renamed hi fi rush
@@enzoponce1881 Yep - the game folder as well as any screenshots that come out of NVIDIA Shadowplay label the game as "Hibiki"
hey one thing you forgot
in the later levels, I think 5th, there is an 'art' of a tall robot eating a small robot.
This is in reference to Chrono eating his child of Greek Mythology
“Vandelay Industries” is a Seinfeld reference. George Costanza’s fake company.
The shot is exactly like the movie.
am i the only one that thinks the tango snail trying to run really slowly is a reference to monsters university?
This game (and video) is criminally underrated glad to see it’s gaining a bit more popularity
:]
Roquefort being named after sheep's cheese is yet another layer to his wolf-in-sheep's-clothing motif which is really just so fantastic.
I got a reference.
Rekka boss fight arena resembles an Ring. There are three pipes are each side of the room.
And while we are at it, Rekka throwing her glove at Chai is a sign of her “challenging” Chai to a duel. It’s just looks funny. Bc he gets slapped hard
I also get an Egg.
I thought the eye injection thing was a reference to Prey (2017), since that was the whole gist of the neuromods in the game
Ahh, definitely possible, im less familiar with Prey (2017), so Dead Space 2 is what came to mind.
I absolutely love this game. Cant wait to see what I missed across this game
10:13 "If you want to fire me, just do it!" That is hilarious.
I think the Easter egg referencing injecting alien DNA into one's eye for super powers might actually be a reference to the survival horror game Prey. Particularly the neural mods what are in fact things that contain alien DNA and are injected into the body through the eye.
10:56 I think it’s more likely to be a Prey 2017 reference as it is exactly the way you get powers in that game.
Nice! The video came out well! Nice job, DPad!
8:52
I was honestly hoping for a reference to metal gear’s “YOU’VE CREATED A TIME PARADOX!”
15:41 also another detail you miss is peppermint moving slightly to the left to get closer to korsica
10:55 this might be a reference to "Prey" where the main character would inject some needle like objects into his eye and get the option to gain the powers of certain aliens that he's faced in the game.
Certified hood banger
The whole scene where the cast snap their fingers together made me think that it was a reference to West Side Story, referencing a similar scene where the gang members approach forwards snapping.
Track three has a snail as well. After hitting the generator that activates the pods that allow you to grapple. Jump right over the generator and the snail is near the edge next to some scrap.
You can find a snail on track 3 off the side of some cliffs. There's a extra little bit of land where it hangs out
The eye one could be about Final Fantasy 7, where the characters have a glow in their eyes exposed to mako. They have Jenova cells which enhanced the soldier, with Jenova technically Alien. So maybe thats what that reference is.
As Zanzo leaves you to fight the Z shielding bot, he also walks backwards like Megamind does.
Another fun fact is that during the mimosa boss fight when Chai makes an appearance on stage he hits the same pose as Michael Jackson does during his superbowl halftime performance
There is a Deathloop easter egg in the secret challenge room of Spectra, in one of the notes.
thanks for putting this together.
16:22 BLOODY SO THATS WHAT THAT NOISE WAS
also, as tvtropes also pointed out, zanzo saying "go, go, go!" is another reference to the "menacing" sound effect, pronounced "go go go"
10:40 While it may just be a coincidence I think this is a reference to PREY, a game where humans take alien DNA and change it where it gives us humans superpower with items called neuromods. Oh yeah, and you inject neuromods through your eye.
at 11:28 you can see the PGR-0101 robot holding an xbox 360 media remote. its a nice addition!
:]
If I had a nickle for every cat that can talk and is a friend of the protagonist, I would have two nickles. Which isn't alot but its weird it happend twice.
I assume you're talking about Persona 5? I'm sure we could come up with more talking cat companions in games.
@@DPadGamer Exactly :)
I think it’s more likely that the eye injection bit is based on the Neuromods in Prey, which is another game Bethesda published.
