    As always Mark offers some very insightful travel info. The man is always a traveler and never a tourist. I must reiterate Mark's thought that Cancun is not genuinely Mexico. It was built be a fun in the sun vacation destination. The Pacific side of Mexico is where you get Mexican culture, Have fun always.

    The cenotes are not in Cancun. They're in Yucatan which is a couple of hours away from Cancun. I'm not Mexican but I own a Time share in Cancun and know the city pretty well. Is like saying that the best thing of Las Vegas is the Grand Canyon.

    Do NOT rent a car, especially at the airport. Take the city buses and taxis. It's not worth the hassle and much safer and eliminates dealing with the traffic police. Safer and cheaper, as well. I've been traveling to Mexico my entire life and never drive.

      P. Ray Hi there! I'm a first time traveller to Mexico and can't decide whether to go to Cancun or Cabo. Any suggestions would be greatly appeciated

    • @austinglenn6583
      @austinglenn6583 6 лет назад

      What do you suggest when trying to travel to Chichen itza or tulum from the hotel zone? Buses? Taxis?

    • @TulumToCancun
      @TulumToCancun 6 лет назад

      Depends on what you're looking for. Cabo is more like a desert, whereas Cancun and nearby areas are more forest like. Cancun is filled with hotels, but there is also Playa Del Carmen & Riviera Maya which have slightly more secluded resorts in quieter areas.

      I was there in 2044 and wondering had things changed that much. I did not rent a car because they wanted a $2500 deposit, so I took a taxi to hotel then used the bus that ran up and down the strand. It wasn't air conditioned, so it was hot, but after seeing how people drove. wow, you don't want to drive. I guess they still have the bus. There are no rules or law of the road.

    • @ggaboveaveragegamer
      @ggaboveaveragegamer 6 лет назад

      Yea I made a huge mistake renting a car. Used it like 2 days out of the week I was there

    I agree with some points that you mentioned on this video, i just want to share my personal opinion, by the way I´m mexican and also I´m living in Cancun.
    Yes sometimes you feel like you are not in Mexico because Cancun was founded in the 70´s with a goal: be a tourist city with modern facilities.
    Do not miss the oportunity of visit Cancun and the places around, there are options for all kind of people. if you like mayan culture a must to do its: Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba. if you do not have time to visit those places the are option inside the hotel zone like: the mayan museum or San Miguelito (mayan ruins)
    Greetings from the sunny Cancun.

    I go to Cancun about 4 times a year...I will be there next week for eight days. If you want to mix with local Mexicans, just catch the Wal Mart Bus. You will be just outside the hotel zone and a short bus ride or cab ride back. In the hotel zone hotels are expensive, but I stay in Cancun for about $40.00 per night. It's great, it's safe, and there is really no need to drive any place...cabs and buses are cheap. Have fun!

      Hotels are dependent on what you are looking for. For a couple wanting to really party, topless and wild...hotels Temptation, Celebration, or Secrets. Quiet alone time, you have to search. My advice, avoid the family all inclusive, the kids will drive you nuts.
      Just go to Expedia or Hotels dot com and research....Cancun is always great. Have fun with your trip. (I prefer the cheaper local hotels where rooms go for as little as $40.00 per night, but I speak Spanish and live in Central America...I don't stand out.) Not a good idea for someone un familiar with this part of the world.

    I also was asked by the guy that booked our snorkel Isla mujers excursion to use organic, non-toxic, for the health of the sealife. We applied three times on the boat and burned!! The next two days were not fun.

    All true. Take the tour bus (nice A/C w/ bathroom) to Chetzen Itza, and buy from the little Mayans. I learned so much on the tour, they brought us to a nice restaurant with entrainment, and went to a shop with great hand made pottery art, jewelry. I loved it. They provided cool water and looked out for all of us.
    Good tip we went in Late April and it was too hot for my MN friend (I was soaking it all in).

    If you're looking for something a little less touristy, but still connected to that infrastructure, try some of the nearby towns like Tulum or Valladolid (about 2 hours away from Cancun by bus). You will probably need at least some phrasebook Spanish. Depending on the level of comfort you want, you can find hostels for as little as US$20 per night or a private air conditioned hotel room for $50.
    Also, word of warning to USAers, the Peso sign is $, just like a dollar sign, but the exchange rate is about 15 to 1. If you're at all in doubt, ask. Better yet, pay in cash.

    A very good way to get from the airport of Cancun to a hotel is through Platinum Premier Transfers, i traveled with them some time ago, the website doesnt look that attractive but its the real deal, they are always ready to answer any questions, they are more of a member thing so they will talk to you step by step to get to Cancun which comes in handy when its your first time.lol

    Followed your tips for safety in Barcelona last summer and they were very helpful. Thank you. Unfortunately a gypsy was accidentally burned with a cigar while trying to pick my husband's pocket. Police tried to arrest my husband during the incident. No my son is going to Cancun for Spring Break. Yes,I tried to talk him out of it. Glad you have tips for Cancun as well.

    • @woltersworld
      @woltersworld  10 лет назад +1

      Accidently ;) hehehehe love it. though sucks about the cops in Barca. and yes it seems like they are OK with the people robbing the tourists, they wont do anything to help a tourist but seem to be OK watching out for the pickpockets. Maybe they get a cut or something :) I don't know but it is sad how pathetic it is with all of that. Cancun your son's biggest problem will be too much alcohol and sun. so pack some good sun block and bug spray for him and pray he learns the words "no mas" (no more). :)

    not sure I agree. I live here and there are a lot of Mexicans and Mayans here. Just got to leave the hotel zone . We often say the HZ is like being in Florida or Myrtle Beach, SC. In addition I dont have a car because I dont need one. Public transportation is convenient, runs often and is cheap. You are right on on the people always trying to haggle and sell you stuff.

    if you go downtown you'll meet plenty of Maya and Mexican people. You don't get the feel of Mexico if you stay in the hotel zone. and I don't recommend renting a car. . use the busses. they're MUCH cheaper and easier to get around town. what you say is absolutely true about the "hawkers" but that's true about most tourist places. things are much much cheaper downtown also.

    How come you didn't show one picture of the pretty baby blue water.. Your one picture you showed, showed no justice.. Party in the Hard Rock pool and enjoy their swim up bar. Its a blast. Also go snorkeling at that place that's 90 mins away from Cancun.. Its also super fun. And wear the fins that they give you, you will need them. And lastly. Go to the Sun Palace for their outside dinner on the beach and eat the RIBEYE. Its the best RIBEYES in the world. I can't find those RIBEYES anywhere in the states.

    If you take a bus tour to Chichen-itza, expect to be held almost literally hostage. "Buy our stuff, blah, blah, blah." Do NOT rent a car. We got pulled over for a light check. When we turned on the high beams, we were ticketed for using high beams in the daytime...after he told us to turn them on. Get it? Take a taxi. Fantastic vacation, just be aware.

    Just a completely unpretentious FYI for future reference: it is "Mayan" only when referencing the language. Otherwise they are referred to as the Maya people or the Maya culture. Nice video!

    Cancun is to mexico what dubai is to the middle east....... a city built for tourism with massive luxury hotels that streach along the coast.

    Take a tour with other non-Mexicans from an inclusive hotel to get to know the Mexican culture?? Get on a damn bus and go hang out in downtown Mexico. Go to Market 23, very easy to get to. Stay at an Airbnb, save hundreds of dollars and experience genuine Mexican hospitality.

    Hate #1 get off the Cancun strip and venture downtown Cancun if you want to feel like you are in Mexico. Great places to eat and shop. Prices are much more reasonable away from the tourist area. Cancun is safe and most locals are helpful.
    Hate #2. My advice would be to never rent a car. Parking anywhere is HORRIBLE. Tourists are targets for police. They will exhort money from you by saying you were speeding or broke a roads rule even when you haven't. Buses run along the strip 24/7 and cost about $1 USD. There is usually a bus every few minutes.
    Hate#3. My advice on this issue. If you are being bothered to take a tour or an excursion, tell them are you leaving the next day. If you are being harassed by shop/flea market owners, tell them you have already purchased your souvenirs or you are out of money. When they see tourists they see $$$. Please understand they are trying to make a living and this is how they do it.
    Hate#4. Prices are always higher on the strip. Once you are more towards the city, prices do come down slightly. It depends where you go. Stay on the strip and things are tourist prices.
    Hate#5. Pretty much March and beginning of April is spring breakers. If you are looking for a relaxing trip do not come during those months. Off season in Cancun is from June - middle of November. The weather is usually always sunny and warm and of course warmer in summer months!
    I go to Cancun a minimum 3 times a year. If anyone wants info on where to go and what to do, simply send me a message!

      Awesome clarification on all the elements. I will be in the downtown area for NYE and was wondering if you had any favourite bars or clubs around there to celebrate in. Also, have you toured any of the ruins on the peninsula and if you have any advice on whether to book a tour or a car to drive myself. Thanks!

      Hi, I'm going to Cancun on July, once I'm at the airport what transportation do you recommend me to go to the hotel? I've never been to Cancun so I don't know much about it. Also, I've heard the transportation from the airport to the hotel is kinda expensive.

    Really can't understand why they let people climb all over the temple, doesn't make sense. I would have thought preservation would be a better option.
